My creative writing course had a “___ was a jerk because ___” prompt and, for some reason, Leah’s undeserved antagonistic traits came to mind and, of course, I had to defend her! So here’s something for Leah!
Leah was a jerk because she didn’t fall in line with the rest of the pack. She was not “one of the boys,” and, more importantly, she was not in love. She could not share the pronounced admiration her “brothers” felt towards imprinting and, thus, she was bitter. Bitter that the others could look the other way. Bitter that there was something, from their point of view, that she was missing. Bitter that Sam hadn’t been her imprint but had, instead, imprinted on her cousin, Emily. So Leah was a jerk, for not compounding the interest in relinquished freedom, for not adoring the lack of choice, for not completely accepting each new relationship that was so comfortably perfect that there was no denying it. Bitter, she was, for not having that luxury. And why? Was she the first shifter who was female? Did some gene in her that allowed for this change replace her capacity for a lifelong mate? What else, besides childbearing, would she sacrifice for what was so easily abhorred for the woman? What else would be taken from her for something she hadn’t chosen?

I can’t stop thinking about an AU where the only thing that changed is that Jacob went cliff jumping with Bella and Alice didn’t have a vision of Bella killing herself
Bella and Jake falling in love, because why wouldn’t they. He’s her best friend, and he saved her from herself.
They spend all of their free time together, and the pack loves to give them shit over it, but really they’re just happy that Jacob is happy.
They don’t have to listen to his internal whining anymore. Why wouldn’t they be happy?
Bella’s happier than she’s been since, well, he was still there.
After a while, she stops forcing herself to see him. She stops with the adrenaline junkie habits. Instead, she just enjoys the time she has with her new boyfriend, the wolf.
She’s content. She pictures them getting married, moving somewhere sunny.
She still remembers Edward, though. She’ll never forget him, and she doesn’t feel whole without him… But she’s able to move on, find love, acceptance, and happiness.
Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t last.
Victoria returns, with her army in tow.
The wolves aren’t prepared. They didn’t have Alice’s foresight, or Jasper’s training. It’s a bloodbath.
Jake dies. Bella watches.
After Victoria snaps Jake’s neck, she stalks towards Bella, black eyes glinting in the light reflecting off of the snow.
She can finally get the revenge against Edward, the one who killed her mate. She’ll kill this human he was so desperate to protect.
Bella knows this. For the first time in 6 months, she sees Edward again.
He tells her to save her life.
“Killing me won’t do you any good. He’s gone. They’re all gone.”
Victoria hesitates. “What do you mean, ‘he’s gone’?”
“He’s gone. He didn’t want me anymore.”
“If he doesn’t want you anymore, then I’ll make sure he can never get rid of you.”
Changing Bella is the hardest thing Victoria has ever done, but she stays strong. James would be proud.
Bella lays there in the woods, writhing in pain. When the pack comes to recover Jake’s body, they leave Bella there. They can’t trust her to not wake up and kill them all. Still, they can’t bring themselves to kill her, either. Jake had loved her so much, and he wouldn’t want her to die over something that wasn’t her fault.
So they leave her behind.
When she wakes up, she just runs. As far as she can. She stays away from humans for months. She can’t trust herself. It isn’t until she has an accidental run-in with a hiker in the forest that she realizes she can be around people without killing them. She figures her vampire super power is probably just super self control.
She starts hunting Victoria down. It takes months, almost a full year, but she finally finds her and kills her. Thank god the Quileute stories about the Cold Ones were accurate. Otherwise, how would she have known that to fully kill a vamp, you have to burn the remains?
She doesn’t know what to do with herself after that. Victoria was the thing that occupied her thoughts for the majority of the past year.
She moves to Alaska. She doesn’t remember the Denalis, though. Edward had only mentioned them once, and her human memories aren’t the best.
She gets lucky. University of Alaska accepts her application. It’s a good thing the pack convinced Charlie that Bella was dead. Not that she knows about that.
Unfortunately, she didn’t get into the English department. She did get into the SET school, and began a biology degree.
The night classes are fun, but boring. She gets a job at a local ER as a medical scribe. She gets to work overnights, which makes the whole “glittering in the sun” thing really easy to avoid.
Things are going well. She’s not happy, but she’s dealing with it. She keeps up with the everyday tedium. Classes and work occupy her nights. She doesn’t know what to do during the days though. She considers getting a second job… Classes and an apartment add up, after all. Eventually, she decides against it, choosing to work on self improvement. She starts writing, telling stories and getting them published in fringe publications.
She’s finding herself, even if she doesn’t know who that is. She doesn’t have many friends, any, really.
Change doesn’t come often, where she is. So when a new doctor is hired to work at the ER she’s at, she’s a little curious.
Imagine her surprise when that new doctor is Carlisle.
