whumpees with addictions..
maybe whumper gets whumpee addicted to any sort of drug. whumpee feels trapped, like they can't leave whumper. maybe if they're bad, whumpee doesn't get their fix, and has to deal with withdrawal, and is just *desperate* to feel normal again.
if whumpee is rescued, especially when caretaker doesn't know about the drugs or even what type---it takes a bit to realize this isn't just illness, but withdrawal. maybe they have to scramble to find the right drug before whumpee's body gives up.
whumpee is miserable---sweating, shaking, nauseous. they give up on trying to eat because they can't keep anything down. they can't sleep.
caretaker doesn't know what to do---even if the find the drug in time, they have to deal with the new reality of whumpee as an addict, they have to get enough of it to try and wean whumpee off of it.

Oh, to love a living weapon. A being whose entire identity centers around violence, who finds far too much comfort in being an attack dog, a source of hurt, because embracing violence means they have SOME form of agency. Oh, to love someone who has been broken down for years upon years, until they're more scar than skin. And maybe they don't want to heal. Maybe they don't know how. Maybe they adore their abuser too much to even consider breaking away from them. They have always known that they're something dangerous, and they have finally found someone who is happy to make use of their violence. They're more than willing to be broken down, in exchange for finding a place to belong.
Oh, to love a living weapon. To love a monster, an attack dog. They're kneeling at your feet, and their grin is hesitant, their fingers shaking, because they only ever want to be loved. If you don't provide that affection, they might just fall apart.
You wash the blood off their hands. Whatever messed up dynamic goes on between them and their handler isn't any of your business. You're the one who takes care of them afterwards.
Oh, to love a living weapon. Oh, to kiss their cuts and bruises.
You embrace them for what they are - not despite of it.

We all know about magical fatigue as a whump trope for magical overuse. Now I raise you: Magical euphoria.
Magic that feels good to use. It leaves the user dizzy and lightheaded, a giddy energy rushing through their entire body. It's enough to leave the most stoic whumpee giggling madly, to make the most obedient soldier go rogue. It's a power that ultimately, inevitably, controls its user.
Mages aren’t trusted to act on their own. They can’t be, not when each spell costs them their sanity. Not when, in a daze of manic joy, they’re just as liable to destroy the enemy as their allies.
And so they need a handler.
Imagine Caretaker in this situation. Forced to watch Whumpee throw themselves into madness, to turn themselves into an unthinking weapon under the demand of some uncaring general. Having to put aside their affection for Whumpee as a person, and analyze them as a tool.
It’s Caretaker who decides when Whumpee is still fit for battle. It’s caretaker who has to look into their dazed and distant eyes, blood dripping into a too wide smile, and decide if Whumpee has anything else to give.
It’s Caretaker who decides when they’re too far gone, when Whumpee needs to stop. And if Whumpee can’t, it’s Caretaker’s job to make them stop. Even if that means using force, even if it means hurting them, because letting them run wild isn’t an option.
And when the battle’s over, when Whumpee is either led or dragged away to the medical wing, Caretaker’s the only one brave enough to tend to their injuries. They wrap bleeding, scorched fingers without a word, the only sound being Whumpee babbling, mad ramblings. Caretaker knows they won’t remember any of this. They still talk to Whumpee anyway, soft, comforting words they hope will bring Whumpee back faster.
And when whumpee’s eyes finally clear, when their body sags with exhaustion they’re just now able to feel, Caretaker feels nothing but grief, because it’ll start all over again tomorrow.

Character A driving through the middle of nowhere, wondering where they might find help for the super sick Character B in the back, only for them to get into a crash. Now A is injured, B is sick as a dog and somehow they're both trying to pull themselves together enough to take care of each other while they get out of this

Things that Whumper Can Do to an Undead/Immortal Whumpee
Induce a heart attack, as many times as they please
Induce a stroke
Induce a seizure
Electrocute them
(Depending on the rules of the immortality) Remove, electrocute, or cut into the brain, creating effects similar to an extremely bad drug trip
Drain their entire body of blood
Waterboarding (also potentially in blood)
Encase them completely in concrete, immobilized and unable to breathe
Embed a sharp object inside them, which stabs them continuously from the inside out
Embed a sharp object inside them, which stabs them continuously from the inside out, but sexually
Play the long game with their connections, getting them attached to someone for whole years or decades before forcing them to kill that person
Play the long game with their hope, giving them some form of freedom for whole years or decades only to rip it away again
Play with their memories by falsifying historical documents and gaslighting them that they're starting to forget details from early on their long immortal life
Indefinite starvation
Indefinite sleep deprivation
Indefinite solitary confinement
Cut off limbs (they'll grow back)
Blind them
Cut out their tongue
Cut off that one special limb

Whumpee blinked. The room where he was lying was dimly lit at that night, and he could hear the machine that recorded his heartbeat beeping steadily. Whumpee was a little confused, but he immediately remembered that this afternoon he had been transferred from the ICU to this ward. After that, he fell asleep and only woke up again now.
Suddenly, Whumpee felt someone's soft hand caressing his cheek. Whumpee glanced over and found Caretaker there, smiling warmly to greet him.
"You awake, Whumpee? Need something? Maybe you'd like a drink?"
Whumpee nodded. Caretaker swiftly took the water bottle with a straw from the nightstand beside the bed. Slowly, Caretaker removed Whumpee's oxygen mask and helped him drink. Whumpee took a slow sip of water from the straw before letting go, and Caretaker put the oxygen mask back on Whumpee's face.
Whumpee struggled a little, perhaps feeling uncomfortable with the air that kept blowing in his face. However, Whumpee also understands that he needs it. After a few breaths, Whumpee looked back at Caretaker. Caretaker smiled and took Whumpee's hand. Whumpee squeezed her back with as much strength as he could muster.
"You can sleep again, Whumpee. You need that. Even though you're out of the ICU, your body is still weak. You still need lots of rest, and you deserve it," said Caretaker gently. "It's okay. You're safe; we're all safe."
A tear hung from the corner of Whumpee's eye, and Caretaker wiped it away carefully. After that, the hand stroked Whumpee's hair lovingly. Even though Whumpee knew there were two other team members asleep on the couch and the rest outside, seeing Caretaker smiling by his side and holding his hand made Whumpee feel safe.
"You'll be back to normal soon, I promise. Get some rest, okay?" Caretaker planted a kiss on Whumpee's forehead. "Thank you for protecting us. Now, let us take care of you."
Whumpee smiled and closed his eyes. He felt calm. He felt at peace. He knows he is safe and loved.

please consider a whumpee who can never get dry
maybe they work on a ship or in a job related to the water, or maybe they just live in a climate that’s always wet and rainy. whatever the case, make sure that it’s impossible for them to ever get fully dry, or warm, or comfortable. Make sure the damp chill clings to their bones, and no amount of blankets or time in bed can chase away the deep cold in their core.
oh, and if you’re feeling especially cruel, add a stiff breeze that blows straight through them.

recovering A is sitting outside with caretaker B. it’s a pleasant day, with mild weather and sunshine, and B figures that even though A’s still fairly weak, the fresh air will do them good. and for a while, it does seem to lift their spirits and bring a bit of color back in their pale cheeks.
A enjoys being outdoors at first, but despite their sweater and the heat of the afternoon sun, they’re barely warm at all.
suddenly, the sun darts behind a cloud, and A shudders.
“feeling alright?” B asks, brow furrowing.
“I’m okay.” A wraps their arms around themselves, trying to ignore the goosebumps that prickle down their spine, and wishes they’d brought out a blanket to tuck around them. I thought the sweater was enough, it’s not even that cold.
the sun returns a few minutes later, but it’s too late—A feels their frail body start to tremble, overcompensating for the slight change in temperature.
“A, you’re shivering.”
“Just got a chill, that’s all.” A hates the way their voice wavers, the way they can barely force the words out through their chattering teeth, the way their bones are suddenly, impossibly freezing, like someone dumped a bucket of ice water over their head.
B jumps up from their chair and instantly comes to A’s side, cursing softly. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have brought you out—“
“It’s fine, B. I wanted to come outside for a change.” Still, B helps them up and guides them inside to their chair, then covers their shivering frame with one blanket, then two, and begins to build up the fire in the small cabin.
“I’ll make you some tea, too, try and warm you up from the inside…” B’s voice trails off as they rustle around in the kitchen.
But A knows it’s no use from experience: they won’t truly stop feeling chilled until their hot bath tonight. And I can’t take my bath too early or else I’ll inevitably get cold some other stupid way, and I’m not making B run me two baths.
Recovering has been slow and frustrating, this part most of all. Why can’t their body maintain their temperature like it used to? Why are they so damn cold all the time?
They don’t realize they’re crying until they feel wipe away the twin tears on their cheeks, and they see B crouching to eye level. The concern on B’s face only makes A cry harder—they don’t want to be this weak, they didn’t used to be this way, they just want things to be better…
And they must say all that out loud, because now B’s arms are around them. “I know. I know it’s hard. We’ll get through this, A.”
There will be more blankets, and hot tea, and against A’s efforts, two baths. But in that moment, A’s never been more grateful for the warmth of B’s arms.
I will get through this.

Some of my favorite words and phrases to describe a character in pain
coiling (up in a ball, in on themselves, against something, etc)
panting (there’s a slew of adjectives you can put after this, my favorites are shakily, weakly, etc)
keeling over (synonyms are words like collapsing, which is equally as good but overused in media)
trembling/shivering (additional adjectives could be violently, uncontrollably, etc)
sobbing (weeping is a synonym but i’ve never liked that word. also love using sob by itself, as a noun, like “he let out a quiet sob”)
whimpering (love hitting the wips with this word when a character is weak, especially when the pain is subsiding. also love using it for nightmares/attacks and things like that)
clinging (to someone or something, maybe even to themselves or their own clothes)
writhing/thrashing (maybe someone’s holding them down, or maybe they’re in bed alone)
crying (not actual tears. cry as in a shrill, sudden shout)
dazed (usually after the pain has subsided, or when adrenaline is still flowing)
wincing (probably overused but i love this word. synonym could be grimacing)
doubling-over (kinda close to keeling over but they don’t actually hit the ground, just kinda fold in on themselves)
heaving (i like to use it for describing the way someone’s breathing, ex. “heaving breaths” but can also be used for the nasty stuff like dry heaving or vomiting)
gasping/sucking/drawing in a breath (or any other words and phrases that mean a sharp intake of breath, that shite is gold)
murmuring/muttering/whispering (or other quiet forms of speaking after enduring intense pain)
hiccuping/spluttering/sniffling (words that generally imply crying without saying crying. the word crying is used so much it kinda loses its appeal, that’s why i like to mix other words like these in)
stuttering (or other general terms that show an impaired ability to speak — when someone’s in intense pain, it gets hard to talk)
staggering/stumbling (there is a difference between pain that makes you not want to stand, and pain that makes it impossible to stand. explore that!)
recoiling/shrinking away (from either the threat or someone trying to help)
pleading/begging (again, to the threat, someone trying to help, or just begging the pain to stop)
Feel free to add your favorites or most used in the comments/reblogs!

People of color in the whump community, how do you feel about POC characters?
(I know some people take issue with the term "person of color", I'm using it for convenience here, but this poll applies to anyone who considers themself nonwhite. Feel free to add specifics about your identity in the tags.)
(If you're white, scroll down for the results button and please reblog for sample size.)
I'm curious about how people view nonwhite characters in whump. On one hand, diversity is a good thing. On the other hand, violence against a character of color could trigger people, and a character of color as the whumper could play into racial stereotypes. This also depends on the specific race of the characters-- obviously, POC are not a monolith-- but there aren't enough poll options for that.
I'd really appreciate hearing people's thoughts, especially people of color in the whump community! Please reblog this to spread it around!
