It takes a moment, but the moment Hyejoo laughs, Ichika feels like she can actually breathe. She would never consider herself a naturally funny person, and if anything, she wouldn’t have been surprised if the younger girl had taken her seriously, but the fact that she caught on was almost a godsend. She pulls away with Hyejoo hits her but only to back away and laugh in return, and it feels good. She likes this. These moments easily make her feel something good and like she wants to be around people. Even if said people are people, she’s around all the time.
“If anything, I think I need to practice, too,” she admits as she settles back in her seat. Technically, she was close to fluent in English, but unlike Japanese and Korean, it was a muscle she rarely used. “After a while, they all seem to get mixed up, don’t they?” This too. She likes that admitting that language is hard and confusing, even when you seemingly understand, isn’t shameful. As proud as she wants to be, maybe it’s okay to admit it.
“No, they’re good!” She affirms with a nod. “Honestly, you really have gotten so much better. I think the fact that you’re so good at singing helps.” It’s weird to think that they have been together for long enough she can remember the younger’s struggles with the language, but true to her word, Hyejoo has grown a lot. And perhaps they both have.
a year ago, having someone listening to her in the recording booth would have made her so nervous that she wouldn't be able to do well. her voice would wobble and she wouldn't be able to deliver anything she way she would like. it's one thing to have producers there, or to perform in front of an audience when everything is said and done, but someone else watching her record just feels oddly vulnerable in a way that makes her feel awkward, even when it's someone she's close with, which is why even her closest friends haven't seen her in a recording booth.
but she's been with ichika for a long time, and they've been working closely together, and after ichika became crystallis's leader there was a feeling of trust between them. so it doesn't really feel scary or awkward, and she's even happy that she can get a second opinion so she can go back and fix things if it's needed. she's always been kind of a perfectionist, but even more so now that she feels like she should do her role well for the sake of the group.
"oh." her face falls for a second before she processes that it's a joke. once she does, she brightens up again, laughing as she hits ichika playfully in the arm. "you're right, maybe i should work on that. there's only so much language i can put in my head." hyejoo plays along, taking a sip of her water. "but the japanese parts are good? i don't need to rerecord anything?"

“Ah! Thank you!”
Ichika smiles so widely as the chat in front of her explodes with comments from fans wishing her a happy birthday. She’s sitting on a couch in her hotel room, soft, cozy clothes cocooning her while she does her best to find comments in between the well wishes.
“Ah, is Hare Hare my gift from the company?” The question makes her laugh and she brings a sweatered hand to her face to stifle the amusement. “I think it’s more of a coincidence that we’re in Japan during my birthday than it having anything to do with my birthday, but it’s fun isn’t it? Truly, I’m grateful we could have a Japanese comeback so soon.”
Her eyes return to the comment while she reaches out for her drink, something sweet and only vaguely related to coffee. Over the years, she’s tried to get used to black coffee, at least for her image, but she couldn’t; she liked sweets way too much and as it was her birthday, she chose to indulge a little more, even if they were promoting.
“Yes, I was able to see my family! My mother came to see me during the Tokyo hi-touch event, and my brother and stepmother took me out for dinner.” She smiles at the memory, truly glad she got to see them after almost avoiding home for a while, but she doesn't want to talk about how she was close to tears in both instances, not realizing how desperately she missed their familiar touch. “My father? Oh, he was busy with work, so I didn’t see him until later, but that’s okay.” Aside from a call, she truly had not seen the man, but that was just how he was. For better or for worse.
“What do I want for my birthday?” She reads the question and then looks off in thought. “I think I would ask for a better year than last.” She says it almost without thinking and almost instantly she sees the comments come in inquiring why— and it’s really something she can’t say. “Last year was amazing! We got to go on tour, but I wish we had got to go more places and meet more Alize.” Truly it’s a good thing she’s able to think on her feet, and for the most part, this explanation isn’t a lie. “It would be too easy to be settled into how things are — this year I want to do to much more and be better than the person I was next year. The frog knows nothing of the sea if it only stays in the pond.”

𝚢𝚊𝚖𝚊𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚝𝚊 𝚒𝚌𝚑𝚒𝚔𝚊 𝚌𝚛𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚜 𝚡 𝚑𝚊𝚞𝚜𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚊𝚗𝚢
“My favorite item?” Ichika pretends to be surprised by the question even though it’s clearly the whole purpose of the filming. The way her eyes widen and she shifts in her seat is supposed to give off that pretty, feminine vibe that is so ingrained in her persona on camera. By now, through interviews with her members, it’s pretty well known she’s more reserved than some of the others, but when there are no others to fill the room with chatter, she has no problem doing her job.
“I suppose one of my favorite parts of my room is my bed sheets!” She smiles and gestures to the pretty, soft floral pattern; little white flowers amongst a cool green background of leaves and foliage “Up until recently, I actually had the same bedspread from when I first came to Korea, but when we first moved out of our old dorms, Youngwon and I went shopping and I saw this and thought it was really pretty, and perhaps it was time for a change.” She laughs softly and runs her fingers over the covers. “I honestly didn’t notice it was green until it was pointed out— I really can’t seem to escape the color, can I?” She laughs softly and shakes her head. “But the flowers are pretty. I think they kind of look like chamomile flowers, which are my favorite.” She glances over at the camera and laughs softly after ducking her head. “I don’t know much about flowers or what they mean, but they’re sweet and useful. I like that.”
Moving to another section, she points out a slim but decently tall organizer made of soft pink, see-through acrylic, which reaches about to her hip. It’s clearly full of things, though oddly enough, it seems relatively neat, given the amount of things within. “I actually bought this for myself last year, too. I like to journal and write down things, so I really love stationery, but seeing as I live with my members, I try not to go overboard. It’s hard, though, since there are so many cute things online, and when we travel, if I can I like to buy stickers or washitape so I can use it for those entries.”
Reaching into one of the drawers, she shows off a few things from her collection, including some stationary her stepmother sent her from her recent trip to Sweden and a cute bear one a fan had gifted her during one of Crystallis’ early fan meets.
“Oh. I know.” After carefully putting things back in place, she opens another drawer and shows off a pen with a smile. “Cleo gave me this for Christmas.” Uncapping it, she shows off the fact that it’s actually a fountain pen. “I’ve never actually used a fountain pen before, but since she gave me inks and a notebook too — ah, it’s this one!” She shifts to pick up the notebook and holds it up with a wider, almost childish smile. “I practiced a lot before I even dared to write in this but my goal is to use both this year.”

Within the almost year Yujin had been part of Crystallis, Ichika couldn’t confidently say they were close — though in fairness, she hesitated to assume that with most the members. She knew she liked her, and knew she worked hard and was reliable, but given Ichika’s reservedness and shyness ( she would hate to admit she was actually shy ) she tended to act with a bit of hesitation in private. It was a personal problem that she attempted to overcome at times, but what she hadn’t expected was how easy it felt to talk to the younger girl while filming her show.
There was a chance that this was because she was used to putting on an act for the camera, a more pleasing persona for viewers, and yet even between filming, it felt… easy. When she had invited Yujin, she had done it mostly because inviting members was expected, and choosing one of the ‘new’ members would be a good look — there was nothing wrong with being strategic — but as they sat there looking at the photos, she didn’t mind when their shoulder brushed, and even leaned closer whilst she flipped through the pages to look for evidence of the man.
“I agree, and physical photos like these seem somewhat more special, don’t they?” There had been a moment in time, long before she arrived in Korea, when she had dabbled in photography as a teen. It had been nothing of great measure, but she had read a good deal about the subject and setting up frames and had even considered purchasing a DSLR before reasoning with herself that such a purchase was irresponsible given her level and settled for a moderately priced digital camera. That interest had swiftly been put aside in favor of her studies and work, but still, it gave at least given her some kind of appreciation for the medium. “But it is a shame that some of these are loose photos…”
Picking up a few of the loose photos, she began to shuffle through them, making sure to allow room for Yujin (and the camera) to see. “Oh, he is!” Ichika found herself replying in an excited whisper. Amongst the photos, she had found what seemed to be a few more photos of the man. One of them was his dressed in a wedding hanbok, standing with an older couple, and another photo with him and what was definitely Granny, both in casual clothes, arms linked and smiling.  “It’s a shame they’re not free like this… this one is bent,” she commented, indicating another one of the more candid wedding photos.
the cultural difference was always something yujin still had to get used to while living in Korea. and while it had been some time since she officially moved over, the blonde was certainly still a foreigner in some shape or form - just like her leader who sat next to her. the show ichika was putting on was a sweet one, something that pulled at the singer's heartstrings whenever she got a chance to hear the older member speak on it.
yujin was lucky enough to be invited on said show, sitting down with her legs neatly tucked underneath her and her dress. the hospitality brought yujin back to a very young age when her grandmother would do her best to care for her and her mother before sadly passing. this woman reminded yujin exactly like her, which caused the idol to be just as helpful as she could (while still being turned down by the old woman). tucking her hair back behind her pierced ears, yujin couldn't help but smile wide when ichika pulled out a photo album. the memories are all that keep every human feeling more alive, looking back at times that already passed. "so young and so beautiful too!" she inputted, eventually moving closer to the table so the album could rest comfortably.
with a bow and thank you for the pears, yujin took a slice and began munching on it while watching over her leader's shoulder. "this is why I'm so drawn to cameras and taking photos of everything, because one day we'll get to look back and remember good times," her sentence was cut short when stray film photos lipped from the sleeves of the old album. the younger quickly stuffed her mouth with the last piece of her pear and fully turned her attention to the couple in the photo. "it might be! she looks a little older than her, maybe in her 20s? do you think there are more photos of them?"

ᴍʏ ꜰᴏʀᴇɪɢɴ ɢʀᴀɴᴅᴅᴀᴜɢʜᴛᴇʀ ᴇᴘɪꜱᴏᴅᴇ : 007 ( goodbye for now, granny! )
It’s a bit late into filming that Ichika realizes this may truly be the last time she sees Granny.
Had the show been filmed even a year earlier, she doesn’t know if she’d feel the same — truly felt that this was more than just a word-related relationship — but as she is now, every moment seems to bring the tides closer. On the daily, she had become used to the absence of her family and come even to skip going home for breaks when she felt them too burdensome — this last lunar new year being one instance — but somehow, despite only meeting Granny on weekends, her schedule permitted, the time she had spent with the old woman had been comforting. Even with the presence of staff, Granny had been kind and loving to her, even off camera, constantly worrying over the amount she ate and the hours she worked as an idol. It was care that she hadn’t thought she needed, but also made her now regretful for the times she avoided concerns from her mother or stepmother.
The staff had taken the old woman out to a spa day that Ichika had paid for herself, not only to thank the old woman for allowing her into her home and for her time but also to prepare the goodbye dinner Ichika was to prepare for her. She used some of the kimchi she had made with Granny on their first day together to make a stew and shuffled around the kitchen to make a few more dishes she had seen the old woman make, dishes she had looked up after her visits in preparation.
By the time Granny returned, Ichika has managed to hang a few streamers and decorations because this wasn’t just a goodbye but it happened to be the day before Granny’s 81st birthday.
There had been excitement and pride when the old woman had complimented her food whilst telling Ichika about her day out, but also tears when Ichika had handed her gifts. One had been a small album she had made with photo taken by the staff or Ichika during filming, a new cardigan she had purchased, and one last thing.
“Oh my.”
Ichika’s heart pounded hard in her chest as she leaned a bit closer to look at the box.
“I know you don’t got out very often, and something dainty would be hard for you, but I saw these and thought that they would be easy for you to put on if you just wanted to look nice.”
Inside the box had been two clasped bangles, one in a soft jade, the other gold with a similar soft jade accent peppered in. “So you don’t forget me,” she had explained before reaching over and taking one to put it on Granny and demonstrate how easy it would be to get on. “Green is my color in my group, but also, granny loves her trees so much, I thought it’d be fitting.”
Somehow tears had been mostly held back until near the end, and when both women had met their breaking point, Granny had wrapped her up in a hug she didn’t know she had craved for so long.
“I’ll come see you again!” She promised. “If we have a concert in Korea, you must come too. You an sit with my family!”
“Don’t forget me, Granny.”

The dullness that had plagued her during the end of the year had mostly dissipated, leaving only wisps of numbness that only occasionally obscured her thoughts. However, for the most part, she felt more aware and present, even if her outward countenance barely changed. She had always been reserved and on the quiet end, but at least now she could focus on work with a clearer mind. It was good being busy.
Legs crossed, Ichika leaned against the edge of the sofa while she watched Hyejoo record her parts, and in a weird way, she was glad she could listen. There was a reason why Hyejoo was one of the group’s main vocals, but even then, there was something about her tone and work ethic that Ichika liked. It was beautiful and charming, and perhaps not something she gave much mind too normally, but at least now she could appreciate it. And perhaps envy the natural skill the younger girl had. Even if it was in foreign to her, she worked hard.
“It sounded good,” she replied honestly once Hyejoo had settled down next to her, “I think you really improved.” The compliment wasn’t empty. Even if it was mostly the job of the production and staff to coach the girls through certain parts when it came to their Japanese, it wasn’t uncommon for Ichika to occasionally point out things that sounded weird to a native ear, but she tried not to overstep if needed. Still, even then, Hyejoo had impressed her at least compared to some of their other recording sessions. “Ah, well I was going to say your English needed work,” she commented, seemingly serious for a moment before her mouth twitched in a way to suppress but failing to hide her teasing. She was not a funny person and in true form, her joke was weird.
♡・゚dancing through the night
         with @lgcichika ♡
at this point in her career, hyejoo has done a lot of song recordings. but even though she's done it a million times, and even though she's established a routine ( comfortable clothes, lots of water, lyric sheet pre-highlighted ), she never quite knows how it'll turn out. sometimes she's in and out, breezing through the recording and doing her lines well enough the first time around that it's just some minor adjustments here and there. but then other times she feels like she's in there for the entire day, and she can sing the same thing over and over again but it's just not right.
she thought today would be the latter, with the added element of singing in another language and having to make sure her pronunciation isn't horrendous. but maybe she got better at japanese since the last time, or maybe she just got lucky, but it went by with no huge problems.
hyejoo breathes a sigh of relief as she exits the recording booth, sitting down next to ichika as she feels a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. "it sounded okay, right?" she turns and looks at the other girl, trying to get a gauge of how it was to a third party who actually knows the language. "there was a lot of english in my parts, so i think it was easier this time."

ᴍʏ ꜰᴏʀᴇɪɢɴ ɢʀᴀɴᴅᴅᴀᴜɢʜᴛᴇʀ ᴇᴘɪꜱᴏᴅᴇ : 004 ( granny was once a beauty! ) ꜱᴘᴇᴄɪᴀʟ ɢᴜᴇꜱᴛ: @yujinlgc
By the fourth time Ichika meets Granny Lee, the woman’s warm personality truly penetrates the idol’s shell. She wonders if this is because even in her younger years, she always felt more comfortable in the presence of older women or if it’s just a testament to Granny’s nature—though both could be true at the same time. And perhaps it helps too that today one of her members, Yujin, is joining her. Even with the eyes of the filming staff, it’s easy to slip into this world and comment on how Granny doesn’t need to peel fruit for them, as they’re both happy to help when something catches her eye. She can still hear the old woman chatting in the kitchen while she scoots on her knees toward a nearby bookcase and removes a very thick photo album.
“Granny, you were so young!” the idol can’t help the shock in her voice as a page of old photos lays open in her palms. In one, Granny has to be a teenager at the time, judging by her school uniform and the bob of her hair. There’s a woman next to her and two younger children, one half a head shorter, holding the hand of a surly-looking child with a bowl cut— both looking ready to attend school as well. Other photos seem to be around this, faded and old, showing the family in various states of life.
“Oh yes, you found some of my old photos, have you?” Ichika’s head turns back up as the old woman speaks, watching while she settles down at the table with the fruit and urges Yujin to eat the pears. Bringing the album closer, Ichika sets it down on the table so the other two women can better see. “That’s one, right there, is a photo of me, my mother, and my little brothers. I think I was about 16 years old… about 1960, I think. Ah tea! Let me get tea!”
Before either girl can refuse, Granny is getting to her feet, groaning and joints pooping but oddly quick despite it all.
“Oh!” Turning a few more pages, Ichika can’t help but gasp as a few photos slip out, clearly unbound. Instinctually, she moves to try and gather them when she notices some of the photos feature a slightly older Granny and a man in a military uniform. “Oh,” she pauses and blinks before pointing at the man, “do you think this was her husband?”

ᴍʏ ꜰᴏʀᴇɪɢɴ ɢʀᴀɴᴅᴅᴀᴜɢʜᴛᴇʀ ᴇᴘɪꜱᴏᴅᴇ : 002 ( granny, i'm an idol remember? )
“I’m going to go visit my neighbor. I’m going to need you to feed the animals, dear.”
Sleep still clung to Ichika’s eyes as she paused for a moment to stare out at the kind old woman seated across the table from her. It had been rather early in the morning when Granny had woken her up. Typically Ichika considered herself a morning person and barely complained when she had to get up early for schedule, but after the events of her first day as the new grandchild of one Granny Lee, it had been hard to remove herself from her covers. Though in the end, she had managed, even if had felt somewhat painful.
Cacooned in an oversized sweatsuit, hair piled messily atop her head, the idol could only stare at the old woman for a long, unblinking moment, completely forgetting the bit of grilled fish had intended to eat.
She had to be kidding.
But she wasn’t.
After a brief rundown of her chores, Ichika had found herself in the yard, dressed rather artfully in Granny’s clothing. The pants she had been given clashed tragically with the sweatshirt she had been wearing earlier, and the bright green galoshes only seemed to further subtract from her elegant persona. Even after bidding Granny goodbye, Ichika could only stare blankly at the gate and the soft glow of the early morning sky before she truly accepted her fate and shuffled off to do her chores.
Truthfully, Ichika hardly considered herself incapable of taking on any task, but she was also a city girl in almost every way. She had never truly shopped at anything other than a supermarket and never thought twice about where the produce or meat products she consumed came from as long as their quality was good. And when she came to train in Seoul, it had been much of the same. What need did she have to care for chickens or pick her own vegetables?
Needless to say, when she had experienced the latter the previous day when being introduced to kimchi making and also the importance of cleaning all the fresh dirt off, Ichika would have been at a loss without the instruction and assistance of Granny. Sure, the old woman had complained in that way old people did and said words and phrases that had left Ichika confused and running through context clues to try to fill in the gaps. She had ended the day in one piece but she had clearly been exhausted by the day's end.
And something told her she would be in similar sorts when filming ended.
The chickens had been easy enough, though the rush of the animals to their feed had made her let out a squawk of panic, eyes round with shock. “Wait, don’t eat it all— let your friends…” In her panic, she had unthinkingly dropped all the feed in one general area, and in an attempt to spread it out more, she tried to use her boot. It had worked a little but mostly ended up aggravating what she assumed was the rooster and after one particularly hard peck, Ichika had quickly escaped.
Moving on, she made to feed Granny’s pigs and goats, and despite almost slipping into the mudd, the process had been a good deal easier.
“Ah, you’re making friends, dear?”
She’s crouched down, leaning against the animal pens, petting one of the older goats when Granny finally returns, some bags of produce in her hands. “Oh, yes, well—” Ichika doesn’t know why she feel shy about being caught petting the animal, but the old woman doesn’t seem to take much mind before she’s gesturing back to the house.
“My neighbor grows strawberries. Come, let’s clean them up and have a snack.”
It’s still odd to be treated so comfortably, but Ichika can only nod and smile, unable to help herself. It doesn’t matter if this is her personal program; it’s hard not to fall for Granny.
