Hunting Recurring Alphas and Rare Spawn Alphas
Alphas yield bigger monetary and rare item rewards when you capture them so I always try to catch them first and if they spot me, then start a battle. Learn where their territory is and how far they will chase you before turning around.
I recommend that you observe whatever you're hunting from a distance first and figure out what's going on- how many other smaller pokemon spawn around it and what the environment is. You can always use crafted smoke balls/stealth spray but why not just learn how to work with what the game gives you.
Tumblr media
This Golduck spawns very regularly on the Cobalt Coast. Its territory is challenging because there's not much close to it for players to hide in/behind. My first step is to get to tall grass. You can hide behind rocks and trees but pokemon can still spot you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember, patience. Once you figure out what food the pokemon likes, then decide where to throw it. This goes for catching any pokemon.
Use your food to put the pokemon where you have the best chance of catching it.
If they are facing you, make them turn around. If they are too far away, bring them closer. Use berries until they are within range and then use cakes.
Tumblr media
This works for every single pokemon. Here is the same method with the Alpha Walrein on the coast:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rare Alpha Spawns
In a previous post, I discussed catching an Alpha Eevee. This required me to force it to spawn. I've found that this method doesn't have any set time frame. Just keep clearing the area of common pokemon so rare spawns can take their place.
Tumblr media
I really want an Alpha Arcanine. Only 3 Growlithes spawn at the highest part of this map, which is only accessible after obtaining Sneasler. (Sneaseler?) This means either you get lucky and an alpha Growlithe spawns randomly for you or you have to clear out the 3 Growlithes as many times as it takes until you get an alpha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I always say, this is a great opportunity to complete Pokédex entries. According to the Pokédex, you need to catch 25 Growlithes and 5 Arcanines for a perfect score on their entry pages and this is literally the time to do that.
Make sure you catch it after all that work! Don't be afraid if it spots you. Alphas never run and engaging it in battle will give you more time to catch it.

How to Handle a Time-Space Distortion
How do you survive the nightmare bubble?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First thing: Empty your bag of all nonessential items. That's all the extra crafting materials, random berries, spoiled apricorns and mud balls. There are a lot of rare items inside the TSDs and you should be picking up everything. That is arguably more important than whatever Pokemon is in there.
Secondly, learn the time frame for a TSD. You have a few minutes after the first notification to get over to it before it becomes fully formed. You always have enough time to stop at a camp and unload before going over, no matter where it is on the map.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you arrive early, find a good place to perch/tall grass to hide in. You have two options when inside a TSD.
Either sit tight and wait for Pokemon to come close to you or haul ass on the Wyrdeer and pick up items.
What happens when you see an alpha or a rare pokemon you haven't registered yet in your Pokédex?
My method of success is very simple. Don't waste your time trying to be sneaky. There are very strong pokemon spawning left and right and they will spot you before you can run. Two hits from pokemon in a TSD and you are unconscious.
Either the one pokemon you want is in a herd of 4 other pokemon, or it's alone. Regardless, just start a battle. By this point, you should know to have a strong pokemon first in your party that can take a couple hits.
Make sure you have your target set to the pokemon you want. Use zL to change targets while in battle.
Play it old school and either whittle its HP down with a combined status effect or start by just throwing a ball. I always have ultra and heavy balls on me and I usually start a battle by throwing a ball and seeing if I can just catch whatever it is first. This method has given me a 99% success rate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of three things can happen: catch, defeat or run. Fun part about this game is that (outside of the rare battle with another human) you can literally run away from anything at anytime. Just turn around and run. If you're faced with a 5x1 battle surrounded by ridiculous pokemon, just run. If you're about to black out, you have enough time to leave the bubble and come back and try again.
If you black out while in a TSD, it will be gone when you wake up, just like all the items you picked up inside the bubble.
Tumblr media
Lastly, get the star piece recipe from town and start crafting them asap. They use all the shards you pick up in TSDs and they sell for $5k a piece.

How to Complete the PLA Pokédex
Literally catch them all. More than 75 different Pokemon require you catch at least 15 of each.
Tumblr media
Yesterday I spent about a half an hour in the Crimson Mirelands, my least favorite region, and decided to just catch everything. That's about 100 ultra balls with a handful of the others. I only used food and smoke balls about 10% of the time when there was no tall grass or anything to hide behind. It became much easier as time went on and I just started firing ultra balls at every Pokemon around me with no hesitation or pause for them to see me and it was incredibly successful.
Tumblr media
The main task is to fill your Pokédex. Step one- read it. Do yourself a solid and read up on whatever Pokemon is nearby. Don't think of yourself as some Pokemon master just because you've been playing these games for 20 years. You have to learn their moves, their favorite food and you are going to have to catch a whole lot more than just 242 Pokemon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is not including every Pokemon but you can probably see the pattern based on rarity and ability to attain. It's easy to stock up on food and balls and just stay out until you've used up everything you got. I try to just clean out the entire map because every Pokemon you encounter serves a purpose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I could make a million of these tables. The amount of requirements is endless. Some of them are wild. The Eeveelutions require you to observe each of them perform 70 agile moves.
Tumblr media
Learn how to be invisible. Make sure your initial radius around the pokemon is wide enough that they can't hear your footsteps. Some pokemon can hear you before they see you. (Eevee, Combee, Starly, Mime Jr...) Have a berry at the ready if you're not sure what food they like. I only use a smoke ball if there's no tall grass or boulders for me to hide behind.
Learn how to throw food. This is different than throwing a ball. Your best chance at catching a pokemon comes from hitting them in the back. And you get rewarded for that. Food can also be a helpful tool to lure some closer. Giving pokemon their preferred food also makes them more compliant! Practice throwing berries first because the cakes are huge pain to farm.
Learn how to focus on your target. Don't be afraid to hold down zL while you're throwing a ball. Get as close as you can before they hear you and then get back to the tall grass/boulder you were hiding behind in case it pops back open.
Keep your team a mixture of strong pokemon and a few that you need to evolve or need to see their moves.
Tumblr media
Lastly, be patient! I currently don't have any tips on how to catch flying pokemon and managed to catch this Magnezone with pure luck and a ton of feather balls!
Mastery comes from practice.

Alphas.
It’s exactly like mega evolutions and dynamax except they just stay that big all the time.
Tumblr media
Damn what I would give to roll up on Red at the top of Mt. Silver with a team of Alphas.
Tumblr media
Well, a team of awake alphas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously, Espeon. Umbreon is sick of your shit.
Bonus: The Eeveelutions ft. Vaporeon also sick of my shit.

The Hunt for an Alpha Eevee
What I really want is an Alpha Espeon and an Alpha Umbreon. That means I need two Alpha Eevee's. Eevee's are known to spawn along the eastern part of Obsidian Fields just north of the Alpha Rapidash in the Horseshoe Plains. They can hear you running and see you when you're standing up. Luckily the Alpha Eevee's don't run and instead just attack.
Step 1- Clear out the Bidoof's.
Step 2- Sleep for 12 hours, either until morning or night.
Step 3- Check the area, clear out the Pokemon you don't want and try again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hunting for a Pokemon you want is a great time to complete Pokédex entries and collect data to help finish it. I think I defeated about 40 Bidoofs and Staravias during this hunt and I completed 59 research tasks! You also increase your chances to see other rare spawns and can defeat the other Alphas of this region every time you sleep/reset.
Here are some of the things I found while hunting-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An Alpha Pichu and many Alpha Bidoofs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Bidoof floating in the air and a double (normal) Eevee spawn
Tumblr media
Finally! Giant Alpha Eevee!

For the Unlucky Players who have to actually work in this game, PART 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Have you accidentally started a multi-battle with 4 different attacking Pokemon when you just wanted to catch one of them and now are getting beaten to a pulp because you can't get a move in?
Have you been running up, down, around, back and forth across every available area and not seen a single shiny? (Except Ponyta.)
Have you been endlessly chased by Paras, Staraptors, Toxicroaks, Geodudes, Zubats and Shinx, Luxios and Luxrays?
Have you been spotted by the Clefairy or Eevee you spent the past fifteen minutes hunting and it just vanishes?
Have you ever used up all your poke balls (literally all of them) trying to catch what should have been an easy Pokemon, only for it to Struggle itself to death or just run away?
Have you found yourself running frantically across the map trying to get away before you black out after looking away from your switch for .001 seconds- because never before in a Pokemon game have you been in fear for your life?
Tumblr media
Congratulations to the speed players that finished this the weekend it came out but I am not that player. I have a full time job and adult responsibilities and it's hard not to compare myself to the players with a team full of Alpha shiny Pokemon. This is not a game where you can pay real money and skip ahead or gain levels by any other method than actually playing the game or getting lucky.
Remember, it all comes down to patience. Going back to camps to unload items and heal is totally free. It's super annoying when you're halfway across the map but take your time and fill up your Pokédex entries on the way back- and run like hell to get away from all the Paras.
It might seem tedious but clearing out all the annoying Pokemon creates an opportunity for rare spawns. In a previous post I explained the Eevee Method and it applies in all maps for all rare spawns.
Take a moment to understand the differences between the cake flavors.
Mushroom- Available first. A safe bet for a lot of Pokemon. Loved by dragon types.
Honey- Loved by bugs and fairy types.
Grain- Loved by Pokemon in fields (pretty much all Pokemon across Obsidian Fieldlands)
Bean- Loved by birds and fish.
Salt- Loved by grass types and rock/ground types.
Sometimes I approach a Pokemon that doesn't react to any of these or I'm running low on materials. Safest bet in that situation is a berry- Razz or Nanab are the best.
This game can be exhausting. Don't let yourself become burnt out before seeing it through to the end! Be like Crobat here:

Arceus Players Follow This Advice
Keep your items in your satchel sorted! You'll be scrolling as fast as you can trying to get from food to ball before the Alpha you're trying to catch spots you.
Budget your money! It goes so fast. Needs > Wants!! It's easy to sink all your money into expanding your satchel but there's so many other things you need- new moves from Zisu, new recipes for crafting, cake bases, items from Volo, new outfits (okay you never need to buy a new outfit but lets be real here)
Just like in any Pokemon game, have a ratio of Pokemon on your team that is mostly strong/Alpha with a couple little guys that need to evolve or level up for new moves, etc.
Don't be afraid to sleep! Resting is free. Crafting potions is not. It's super annoying to have to keep running back out there's several bonuses: unload your evolutionary stones, stardust and extra supplies in your item storage; repetitively clearing out low leveled Pokemon will help with completing Pokédex entries and makes space for rare spawns; farmable resources will reset and regrow!
Type advantages are the only way to survive!!!!!! Forget about levels until you know how types work!
Multiple NPCs will ask to see completed Pokédex entries for Pokemon I've always found useless in the past. Get on it!!
Practice creeping around the low leveled Pokemon in the early parts of each area. Starlys are excellent to practice on because they spot you quickly and there's a million of them.
Visit the shops after you gain another star. They will upgrade your options. The crafting guy will eventually let you buy cake recipes- cakes will be the only way going forward to catch higher level, more challenging Alphas.
Learn how to dodge effectively. That's the only way to get past the Noble/Frenzied Alphas in each area.
Use your grits! Grits are the early forms of carbos/protein/calcium etc! They are easy to obtain when you defeat/capture alphas. They are essential for Pokemon that evolve only when your friendship increase.

What Happens after Kleavor
Tumblr media
.....Oh.
I was worried about Kleavor and it was really the least complicated battle I've ever been in. What I've heard from speed players is that these battles get exponentially harder after Kleavor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all, I thought he was a monkey but turns out he is an evolution of Scyther (??). He's super weak to water and literally only level 18. But remember, levels don't mean much of anything here and you need to be on top of type weakness and advantages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was over prepared and overly worried so I brought a Floatzel and a Gyrados (not the one you see flying around. I had to catch a Magikarp and evolve that shit). One water move and Kleavor's health dropped and I continued throwing "calm bombs" at it and dodging its attacks until it chilled out and ran away. Literally 5 minutes of my life there and now I am able to move into a new area on the map-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This place will technically someday become the area around Lake Valor and Pastoria City. From the map comparisons, it looks like Sunnyshore City is too far northeast. Not entirely sure why they didn't have us go next to an area adjacent to Obsidian Fields next.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upgrade your bag space before you explore this area because as you progress through the game, the amount of things you need to craft increases and it's super annoying to have to keep going back to a base to drop stuff and then head back out. Note: stay on your feet and don't charge around on your Wyrdeer and end up running into the Alpha Ursarings.
I can only add one more picture to this post so I will leave you with this:
Alpha Pachirisu :)

Ponyta Love the Wyrdeer and How to Catch an Alpha
and all the other things I've learned while circling the Obsidian Fields one million times.
How to catch an Alpha below!
Has anyone else noticed that Ponyta will follow you if you approach them while riding the Wyrdeer? It's really cute. (Don't try it with the Alpha Rapidash.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lessons in Alpha:
First you need to learn how to hide. Alphas react the same way their regular-sized counterparts do. Birds and deer notice you a lot more easily than other types.
Then you need to learn about food. Researching individual Pokemon's favorite food and gathering a lot of it is essential. Feeding them is one part of completing their Pokédex entry and it will increase your chances of the poke ball staying shut.
Eating their favorite food makes Pokemon happy and happy Pokemon are much easier to catch. Pressing the back left trigger on your Switch when focused on one Pokemon will show this:
Tumblr media
This is key information. The diamond color will reflect how possible it is to catch a Pokemon. Red means a total no-go, while green is the ideal color. The Staravia above was not pleased when I threw out a random berry (they prefer honey).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another huge component of catching any Pokemon is where you throw the food. It might take a while but you need to position yourself in a place where you can throw the food far away, causing whatever your hunting to run away from you. It is infinitely easier (and yields more rewards) when you throw a ball at their back.
Tumblr media
Here are the Alphas I've caught so far in the Obsidian Fields. Alphas respawn after a while so you can go back and catch multiple. Catching Alphas also yields greater rewards when checking in with Laventon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Battling with an Alpha is fun but be prepared to be frustrated at times. Not sure how that Pikachu avoided that attack.
Tumblr media
My last tip here is to visit the human equivalent of an Alpha, Zisu the Giant Red Woman, who is essentially the ancestor of all Move Tutors. She's way at the end of the village and a pain to run to but definitely worth it. Catch a lot of Pokemon = earn money = give it to Zisu.

For the Unlucky Players who have to actually work in this game
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am now about 20 hours in and I have not progressed past Kleavor or into the second area after Obsidian Fieldlands. I don't feel comfortable enough with my dodging/creeping skill to try the Kleavor battle and there's still plenty left to do in the first section, including catching all the alphas and completing Pokédex entries, and finding items to craft.
Even though the screenshot above says 5 stars, I have moved on to 6 stars and supposedly Pokemon up to lv80 will obey me even though the highest levels I have are mid-40's.
I have learned how to capture Alphas and sneak around angry Pokemon. Took me a long time to figure out how to find rare spawns and it involves a few tedious steps.
After watching a video, I discovered that the same amount of Pokemon spawn in each area every day. You must "clear out" the current Pokemon in an area and then come back approx. 12 hours later to see if a rare spawn has taken a spot.
For example- the Eevee method.
I, like many players, haven't gotten randomly lucky in this game and I have to work for Eevees. Here is where I find them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This location is eastern Horseshoe Plains. As we've all discovered, there about a million Bidoofs here. They spawn in pairs. The pair that appear here must be cleared before an Eevee can spawn in its place. After you have battled and defeated/caught them, head back to camp and sleep until either morning or the middle of the night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now ride your Wyrdeer east back to this same location to see if it worked. Be careful, Eevee's can sense you when you are standing up and will vanish if they spot you. Then you have to repeat the process all over again. This has worked for me about 10 times but I keep running too far into their area and they vanish.
This is where you have to understand how to sneak around and use food effectively. In your Pokédex, your completed entries will list each Pokemon's favorite food. Throwing berries is always a safe place to start.
Discoveries from Battling
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's another Legends Arceus-specific thing: Typhlosion is now fire-ghost type! I've found that if you have multiple Pokemon pursuing you and your throw one of your Pokemon near them, it will start a double battle. Levels don't mean much in this game and it really comes down to type advantages. So if you think you can squeak by and take on a little Starly with your level 30 Machoke, sorry! Flying beats Fighting, learn your type advantages!

Game Progress So Far
I took this screenshot 6pm January 31st.
Tumblr media
This game, like all new games, takes time to understand. My progress doesn't match anyone else's and that is fine. In the average Pokemon game, I usually have collected all badges and beat the Elite 4 in 30-ish hours.
I've seen players finish this game within 24hrs of it being released and that is all good and fine for some people. I had to watch a video to understand how to effectively catch a Pokemon!
Tumblr media
If you don't want to be a scientist and collect data then this game is not for you. Players need to catch and defeat more than a dozen of each Pokemon, feed them x amount of times and observe specific moves to complete their Pokédex entries. It is kind of annoying when I am a 20+ year veteran in this franchise but I guess that's all part of being a dedicated player.
Tumblr media
Talk about frustrating aspects of this game!! Players have to pay for more slots in their satchel and without buying the slots, you are reduced to a Gen 1-size purse. And since computers don't exist, you have to visit your house or the base camps to store extra items in a wooden trunk.
The majority of items you pick up will be a wide variety of berries and types of rocks. You need all of them and you need to run all over the place to find them. Good thing we can ride Pokemon here!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hello, giant Stantler. The Wyrdeer. Wire-deer? Weer-deer? Just add it to the list of names in this franchise that you pronounce differently every time you see it. This thing hauls ass. Can't swim or climb up sheer cliffs but still can save your life when you run into Alphas.
Tumblr media
Don't be like me and see a Rapidash and run right at it. It'll spot you with its demonic red eyes and straight up murder you. Catching Alphas is explained by much more dedicated players in many YouTube videos so I won't waste time discussing this. Just run away until you have a type advantage, higher levels and someplace to hide while you throw food at them.

Observations and Lessons Learned the Hard Way
Welcome to Hisui, where you can drown in deep water and die after falling off a cliff.
Gone are the days where water is an untouchable barrier unless you have Surf, a fishing rod or a bike with inflatable tires. You can cross shallow streams and little puddles but there is nothing stopping you from trying to cross a river and finding out you can't even doggy paddle.
The same goes for hills and mountains. After spending too long working your way to the top of a hillside after you caught a glimpse of a flying Gyrados (YUP), you could miss a step and fall straight back down and black out after impact.
If only someone had warned us about this. Maybe -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a confusing set of characters we meet in this region. Laventon looks like he's also a time-traveler that fell out of the sky. What is that hat?
I keep having to tell myself, we are in a time before civilization and there's no such thing as a PokeCenter or PokeMart. I found the ancestor of Nurse Joy (pictured below) who does nothing to help you in this game.
Since there is only one village (Jubilife), you now visit small camps scattered around the highlands to nap/heal, buy items and switch out your Pokemon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also pictured here are the two early versions of my bag- excuse me, my satchel. You no longer have a backpack or messenger bag and instead have a satchel. It's a fanny pack.
