It’s Slow Burn. It’s tedious trust turning into certain loyalty.
It’s deals made in desperation becoming unbreakable bonds.
It’s noticing, focusing, the subtle shift of light in their eyes, the shifting wrinkles that show in different smiles.
It’s bearing the sting to taste fleeting sweetness.
It’s careful words and cautious actions despite the ticking clock.
It’s holding back a hand to save their suffering.
It’s watching as the pain works its way through their bones.
It’s knowing that the smile you wish to give them, the kind words, would only lead to anguish.
It’s finding other ways to love them.
It’s endlessly searching for ways to relieve their agony and give them the adoration they deserve.
May it take days, or months, or decades. You’ll keep your devotion in a bottomless jar hoping someday they will drink from it, greedily, happily, sore throat eased from your efforts.

Thank you @rjcopeseethemald for the tag. Trying to use this to break me out of the writing ennui I contracted this weekend.
My words were revolt, react, break, make - all from various chapters of Wend in the Shadows.
REVOLT
In a different, not-so-distant time in his history, Renathal mused as his carriage trundled across Penance Bridge, he might have enjoyed, even instigated, such a rebellion; the challenge of outright revolt against the creator of the realm did hold a certain contumacious appeal.
REACT
Renathal only shook his head. He could not answer. Honesty was all well and good when it made her look at him like that - like he was the only thing in any world that mattered - but how would she react upon discovering the details of what awaited them?
BREAK
“What-” she began, but Renathal’s mouth had already found hers, dragging her to him and drowning his temper in a deep, desperate kiss she reciprocated without thought, and which, for one full, delicious minute, neither of them was willing to break.
MAKE
“True,” Denathrius conceded, around another unrepentant sip. “Some may spare more, some may make do with less - that is equity. It is often mistaken for unfairness to those of an untrained eye.”
