Patient H: An acute worry about urination

I have resumed my explorations in the Melanie Klein archive this month after a short time away. My latest find comes from the B files, which contain Klein’s clinical notes on both adult and child patients. Here I'm sharing some excerpts from file B.69, which contains notes on a male patient, ‘H’, from 1940. The file is fairly large, running to some 67 pages, so I am picking out some particularly thought-provoking fragments here. The file opens with Klein describing patient H’s ‘acute worry about urination’, which is connected to fears he has about his penis. She writes,
‘…from an analysis many years ago, he knows much about castration fear, and has evidently stabilised himself in localising his fears in this way.’ [image 3/67]

Klein writes that H’s worry about his penis and about urination is connected to a fear of ‘internal trouble’ or disease, and of cancer specifically. She links these preoccupations to a concern that arose during H’s adolescence, related to his enthusiasm for collecting butterflies and insects: namely, a presentiment that the cabinets in which the creatures were displayed would become disarranged. Klein describes the rituals by which H tried to ensure the cabinets were not tampered with, and records that he could eventually no longer bear the strain of his anxieties and gave up collecting altogether.
She writes, ‘his fears about internal disaster…actually, the fears about the inside, the cabinets, and the penis, are alternating…,’ and also that his, ‘fear about the penis [is] obviously over-emphasised in order to keep away from these internal fears’. [image 4/67]
‘Abundant dream material’ follows from Klein’s connection of these things, and she records that,
‘the butterfly, a very much admired and loved object to begin with, in a dream changed into another insect with mutilated wings, much less good, and also much less attractive, and then into the insect which paralyses another insect.’ [image 4/67]
Klein’s notes show her interpreting H’s dream in light of his dread of homosexuality, which he feels ‘would be somehow disastrous for his penis’. H associates to catching a butterfly with a white net, and Klein says this highlights H’s longing for a good penis, and that the net represents, ‘the mouth by which he took in the penis of the father, a good object, [which] changes instantly into a more and more dangerous one as soon as it is inside.’ In association, H recalls,
‘…feelings of being insincere towards his mother, who seemed to think that he was a paragon of virtue, beyond temptation, as it were, and he knew, when she said something of the kind…that he was interested in other boys’ penises. This interest was quite conscious. He took it that it was mainly to compare them with his own, which, in childhood he had felt to be inferior and damaged. He feels also that in his frequent urination the penis has shrunk, and he must see it and make sure that it is still there. That is one of his conscious feelings about the obsession to urinate.’ [image 5/67]
Feelings of insincerity follow, Klein writes, from H’s sense that he has robbed his mother of father’s good penis, represented by the butterfly he tries to catch.
H’s father, Klein notes, is a frightening figure felt to be violent and dangerous. Whilst H recalls feeling little warmth for his mother, he does bring a memory of clinging to her bedsheets when he was terrified of going to kindergarten. Klein notes that,
‘…he was so terrified that his only help was to stand there with closed eyes, which seem[ed] to relieve some anxiety, as if he would see something awful if he opened his eyes…he feels the terror was that he left his mother behind in danger.’ [image 6/67]
H also remembers,
‘…that when his parents had not come up from the evening meal by eight o’clock – which had been a ritual – then he started to yell, so that it could be heard all over the house. If they came up by eight then it seemed to be all right. We understood that some awful danger was to happen to them at night time, and that this was shifted on to this definite hour at which he knew that the parents were at a meal with the people there as well.’ [image 6/67]
On 19th March 1940, H tells Klein that he feels peaceful. He is reluctant to admit any improvement, lest things go wrong again (Klein thinks that he is referring here to intercourse), but there are no symptoms to speak of, no indigestion or urination trouble. H then reports a dream, a fragment of which I will share here:
‘A man drove him in a very fine car to someplace which he thinks must have been a scientific meeting. (This man has been a very important person in his own line of work. In the past he looked up very much to him and would also have liked this man to take notice of him and be interested in him, but that was not the case. Now of course the situation is altered. This man has retired, and H feels that he can triumph over him because he may quite easily get ahead of this man’s former work.) In the dream it seemed quite a…[word missing] that this man drove him there, but then both the man and the car seem to have gone, and H was trying hard to find them. He had already taken notice of landmarks to remember the way back…as if he himself would have to find the way.’ [image 15–16/67]

Klein tells H that the man who drove him had clearly helped him, and meant something to him. He was important too, and has a very fine car. She notes H’s great wish to have a car of his own. The situation of being driven by an important man, Klein says, ‘points to the internalised father’, and she connects H’s admiration of this man’s work to his admiration of his own father, who built a harbour in a place where they spent summer holidays. She suggests,
‘…there may have been great admiration in [the] early days for the potent father, the father who owned mother, who made children, who had skill and power, etc. Great desire and longing to be on good terms with his father, to be taught by him, to be introduced into sexuality, to share with him mother. I suggest that the fine car stands for mother.’ [image 17/67]
Klein also writes that,
‘H was in the dream trying to undo the loss of the important and good father and the mother, wishing to have the two with him and united in a good way inside him. At the same time the wish to become independent of his internal figures, the landmarks he made because he was going to find the way himself…In this hour as well as in former ones, much work about the repression of his love and admiration for his father, actually there is only one friendly memory so far, when his father had him on his knee, and offered him a chestnut, which H very much liked, but could not accept it, and told his father he could not accept it because he had to find chestnuts for himself. He thinks his father was very angry.’ [image 18-19/67]

I will certainly be doing this, and in my next blog post may bring more about H, or perhaps another of the patients who appear in this fascinating file. I am struck that, in the brief excerpts I have shared, Klein is once more grappling with the way in which the patient’s conception of a parental couple powerfully influences both his sense of himself and his relations with others. She clearly feels it is part of her role to help H uncover the better memories of his parents, which she perceives in his material – though often deeply buried.

Fear of influence – projective identification in love and work

My last few blogs have focused on psychoanalytic technique. In them we saw Klein advising colleagues in relation to interpretation and the use of silence, and emphasising the need to be ‘self-critical enough’ and to ‘keep our minds and technique flexible.’ Here, I am changing tack slightly, and in the coming months intend to share a number of clinical vignettes, recorded by Klein, which she clearly felt threw light on various theoretical ideas.
The vignette I share here is from file B.98 of the archive, which is named ‘Theoretical Thoughts 1946’. As readers may know, Klein published her seminal paper on the paranoid-schizoid position in 1946, in which she discussed projective identification. This is the complex mechanism by which, in unconscious phantasy, parts of the self are located in the other for various reasons – such as to control or to harm – and with varying effects both on the self and the object. Klein clearly has this concept in mind as she explains the preoccupations of one her adult patients, ‘M’. Regarding this patient M, she writes:
...the influence the projective identifications have on sexual intercourse are seen quite clearly in somebody whose analysis has not been carried to any length yet.

M, Klein observes, is worried about ‘influencing and moulding’ the women with whom he becomes romantically involved. His specific concern is that he should influence them, ‘in such a way that they are greatly changed and become really like himself.’ Klein notes that M,
…saw with dismay that a girl he likes and who likes him had changed her style of dressing in the way in which he sometimes likes women to be dressed and he called this “the thin end of the wedge”.
Further, she records that,
He speaks with great concern about an earlier relation in which this [his influence] seemed to be one of the factors which made the girl too fond, too dependent on him… [The relationship] finished unsatisfactorily, because he cannot bear too great dependence in the woman.
Klein seems to have in mind here the way in which, in phantasy, M locates aspects of himself (such as his liking for women who dress in a particular way), in the women he is in relationships with. He then finds them changed as a result: more like him because they contain aspects of him. In M’s case, it appears that there is some continuing recognition of the split-off parts – hence his perturbation – although often, if the aim is to entirely disown such parts, one may feel absolutely disconnected from them in the other.
Another effect of projective identification in this case, is that M feels these women to be too dependent on him. One may surmise, however, that M himself felt very dependent on these women because they now contained parts of him. M seemed to respond to this experience by projecting his own feelings of dependency right back into these women.
Klein notes that M’s concern regarding his influence extends beyond romantic relationships, to professional ones. She writes,
Somebody said that he is apt to choose people (in working conditions) who are so receptive to his ideas that they will make a perfect staff. In referring to this influence he said: “They become really too much like myself and then I become very tired because I am not really so fond of myself and don’t want to see so much of myself about.”
Again, when one is projecting parts of oneself into others, one is apt to feel surrounded by these aspects – surrounded by oneself, as patient M observes. Klein notes that, in M’s case, it is relationships with women that are particularly affected, and that he ‘does not seem to feel having [sic] such powers over men.'
I think Klein was using this brief vignette to illustrate one particular impact of projective identification, namely the way in which a phantasy of having located parts of the self in the other can leave one feeling frighteningly powerful; worryingly capable of controlling or influencing the object. This is why M says that the girl dressing in a way that he would like, is just ‘the thin end of the wedge’; i.e., only the beginning. Another response might be that M feels quite trapped by these women into whom he projects. Perhaps this is also what he is getting at when he says that they become too fond of, or too dependent on him.
Klein ends her notes with a ‘Conclusion’ which, though it sounds very definitive, is to my mind more a postulation about what might be going on in M’s case. It’s not clear whether, or how, she put this to her patient, but it is interesting that she suggests M’s projection may lead him to feel rather less powerful, or potent, than he consciously fears himself to be. She notes the possible implications for sexual relations in this connection. She writes,
Conclusion: The penis being used as a controlling object, as an object to be split off, and then the mechanism of splitting is very active. Not only faeces are split off but parts of the body which are entering the body [of the other] and controlling it. Now the penis is then felt to remain inside in a controlling, guiding, et cetera way. That too must have a bearing on difficulties in potency, because if it is too much a sent out part of oneself it impedes the capacity…
The notes tail off at this point, with Klein highlighting the way in which the ego can become depleted by excessive projection. Her remark about the potential impact on sexual potency indicates that one may feel most concretely, the loss of a part of the body, such as the penis, following a projection. In April 2024, the British Psychoanalytical Society will host a conference in Edinburgh called ‘The Dynamics of Influence’. The aim of the conference is to provide a space to explore the ways in which analyst and patient can powerfully influence one another. The mechanism of projective identification, and the implications of its use, will likely be central to discussions.

New publication: Melanie Klein’s Narrative of an Adult Analysis

This month’s post is a bit different from usual, as I am delighted to announce the publication of my new book, the latest – and most substantial – product of my research in the Melanie Klein archive. Melanie Klein’s Narrative of an Adult Analysis brings to light Klein’s work with an adult patient, Mr B, which took place between the years 1934 and 1949. While Klein’s 1961 Narrative of a Child Analysis provided a detailed record of the psychoanalysis of a child patient, Richard, there hasn’t previously been a similarly full account of her work with an adult patient.

My new contribution to Klein scholarship builds on the valuable work that Elizabeth Spillius, Claudia Frank, John Steiner and Jane Milton, among others, have already done to illuminate Klein’s theories and clinical work. This record of Mr B’s analysis provides the reader with detailed clinical evidence in support of Klein’s ideas concerning the combined parental couple, phantasies about the inside of the maternal body, attacks on objects using bodily products as ‘weapons’, and the guilt that follows these attacks – which may go hand in hand with a terror of retribution by damaged objects.
Klein’s work with Mr B also reveals so much about the nature of the fundamental conflict between love and hate, which, as Klein saw it, is first experienced in connection with the breast. In this account of an analysis we can see the terrible implications where such a conflict is not well worked out in development. The book also reveals Klein’s great insights into what may drive a negative therapeutic reaction, and into the dynamics of, and obstacles to, mourning. There is very moving material on the impact of the unexpected arrival of a sibling, and the way in which love can become almost entirely obscured where hatred has instead been nurtured through grievance. Love, however, as Klein’s work with Mr B shows, may in turn be liberated through the rigorous analysis of aggressive impulses and hatred.
The following excerpt, from Chapter 2, gives a flavour of what readers can expect from the book. Here, Klein is describing a difficult but important period in Mr B’s analysis, which begins when he bumps into another patient of hers, a child. Klein writes:
Confidence in me had increased, though this easily changed one day to give place to full distrust and to accusations which we could easily connect with the attitude towards mother and nurse. I had been able to make an arrangement by which Mr B did not meet either the patient before him, or the patient after him. I made a special point not to alter his hour since the definite possession of this special hour meant very much to him, and seemed to be partly a compensation for the great frustration which, in repetition of the old situation, analysis brought to him. But [at some point] I had to alter this arrangement for a child patient who could not come earlier. To begin with Mr B seemed to take it reasonably, but he could not maintain this attitude. He became silent only to break out in accusations about how I had disappointed him and let him down. I had promised him this hour and he asked me to remember how strongly he had felt about this promise. When I pointed out to him that he could still have his hour, but that I could not then help his meeting the child, he seemed to take it fairly reasonably.
The next day he came a few minutes earlier, obviously in order to avoid meeting the child, and he waited in the waiting room until the child had gone. He heard me talk with the child in the hall, since I escorted this child to the door partly to make quite sure that he would leave the house, as he was very reluctant to do so. The child, who had meanwhile developed similar feelings towards the grown-up patient as Mr B had towards him, said before he left, pointing at Mr B’s hat which he saw in the hall, ‘oh, that man has arrived’, a remark which was heard by Mr B in the waiting room. Mr B again tried to take it reasonably and attempted a joke about the child, obviously disliking him, but he then became silent and a very critical part of his analysis began. Near the end of the hour, he broke the silence only to accuse me, full of hate and indignation, of having let him down and broken my promise to keep this particular hour for him. When I pointed out that I understood the difficulties which had arisen out of the presence of the other patient, but that I had actually not altered his hour, Mr B replied that I had actually kept him waiting. It is true [that this was] only for a very short while, actually one minute, but still this waiting occurred in his own hour. It appeared that the old situation, namely the unexpected arrival of the sister, had been reactivated with full strength, and Mr B recognized it himself… He even said that had I announced the child to him before he met him suddenly, it would not have made so much difference, because he would nevertheless have felt the deprivation quite as strongly. It [would] not [have] relieve[d] the feelings roused in him. Analysis had become absolutely bad. Everything that I had ever interpreted was wrong. Mr B felt hopeless and wanted to break off his analysis. When, after my interpretation of the whole situation something seemed to loosen, he said ‘you will not be able to do anything because my army is ready and I am fully on its side’.
Klein’s notes continue:
During the next few days Mr B came very late, nearly at the end of his hour, so that I could see him only for a few minutes. He had repudiated my suggestion to move his hour 10 minutes later so that he would not meet the child because, [he said,] that would mean that he had no more the same hour, [that the hour would be] no more his own. Still, he came every day, although during the day he always made up his mind not to come at all and to break off. But those few minutes we had and to which I was able to add another 10 minutes or so of extra time, gave me the possibility of analysing the situation. I may mention that Mr B felt very guilty for coming so late, for keeping me waiting and for losing so much of his time and accepting extra time, and he watched very anxiously my reaction to all this. He agreed with me that his coming so late was partly to show that he would not keep to time since I had not done so, at least this is how he felt, but I did not stress this point much. I showed him, both in my attitude and in my interpretations, that I quite understood that he could not help staying away since there was too much anxiety connected with the remote possibility of meeting the child, and that altogether he could not bear to be with me for the full time. It certainly relieved some anxiety that I said that we would just have to be patient and do at the moment as much work as we could. I had generally interpreted that the main thing was not his disappointment, but the anxiety aroused in connection with his aggression, [that arose] both against the child and against me. I substantiated this with a few remarks he had made. He had said that even if I happened to abolish this child it would not help now any more. In one of these short sessions, he had spoken of feeling like falling into a well with burning pitch and of disaster all around him. He had not lied down, or if so, had soon got up again and sat further away from me or was even standing. After an interpretation he had quoted a line of Coleridge, ‘if we fall out with those we love it works like poison on the brain.’ He had spoken of the kettle in him which would boil over and which he could not control. I could relate all this to former material in which his words and thoughts were equated to attacks with burning and poisoning, and I interpreted his anxiety of meeting the child on the grounds of his destructive wishes against this child and his anxiety of abolishing the child directly – as well as of the child being destroyed because of his secretive sadistic attacks against it.
Klein quotes this line from Coleridge (which is slightly misquoted by Mr B) in her 1937 paper, ‘Love, Guilt and Reparation’. There, she writes of the concern and guilt one may experience upon feeling hatred, at times, towards a loved one. I think she must have had Mr B in mind when she included this quotation. In the notes above Mr B rages at Klein, whose arrangements have provoked the re-emergence in him of very early, unbearable feelings of displacement and hatred. He now feels ‘on a razor’s edge’ with respect to the analysis, just as he had felt all his life in relation to his mother. Klein’s understanding clearly helps Mr B to cling on until the emotional storm is worked through.
The cover picture of the book was painted by Beccy Kean, and is called Stormy Petrel*. It was inspired by an extremely poignant moment in Mr B’s analysis: his painfully moving description of this tiny seabird which struggles so much to get to its young and Klein’s connecting of this to Mr B’s experience of his mother, whom he felt had struggled so much to feed and nurture him. It is remarkable to understand the ways in which Mr B’s relations with both parents are revised in the course of his analysis with Klein.
* In Klein’s notes, she writes ‘stormy petrel’, though the correct name of the bird is Storm Petrel. Mr B, who was so knowledgeable about the natural world, presumably knew this. We cannot know for certain which term he used. The term ‘stormy petrel’, however, was once used to denote ‘a person who brings or portends trouble’ (Collins English Dictionary), deriving apparently from a belief held by sailors that storm petrels foretold or caused bad weather at sea. One can imagine Mr B may also have used this term, which seems not unconnected with his experience of his mother.

‘Every analyst has to find his own way’: further notes on technique

This is the third in a series of blog posts addressing the subject of technique. In my previous two posts I shared material from file D.3 of the archive, called ‘Notes on interpretation, notes on defences’. Here, I share another handful of illuminating fragments from the same file. Again, Klein speaks about interpretation, the patient’s resistance or reaction to it, and of the ‘synthesising’ action of analytic work.
This wasn’t a term I was familiar with from Klein’s writing, nor one which is in regular usage these days, as far as I know. However, it does appear in a number of Klein’s later papers, including in ‘Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms’ (1946), and ‘On the Theory of Anxiety and Guilt’ (1948). In this latter paper Klein writes that, ‘the basis of depressive anxiety is the synthesis between destructive impulses and feelings of love towards one object’ (p.35). Klein gives an example of synthesis in the notes I reproduce below, and I have also included an excerpt from her work with Richard, from her 1961 Narrative of a Child Analysis, which illustrates it well.
Firstly though, returning to the matter of finding the right balance between interpreting and allowing material to flow, Klein writes that it takes,
…much experience and constant vigilance even later on not to err in this respect. We have to ask ourselves over and over again whether now is the right moment for interpretation, [or] whether what we have seen now as an important point should not be allowed to pass to gather more material. On the other hand, in doing so we might miss a juncture at which interpretation, by relieving anxiety, brings out further and more important material still. This is one of the many points in technique where every analyst has to find his own way; but none of them I think should not again and again retrace his steps and allow himself to try occasionally other possibilities. Demonstrating just this sort of vigilance in her own work, Klein reflects upon receiving criticism from colleagues. Somewhat amusingly, she insists that she has seriously considered this criticism, while simultaneously making it clear she feels it was wrong:
I have often made good use of criticism which, though it had missed the mark, made me try over and over again [to think about] whether certain things I was criticised for could not contain some truth. (Image 9/85)
Then, regarding the patient’s resistance to interpretation, she writes:
The patient might for unconscious reasons want to stop the analyst in speaking and thus not give him [an] opening [to interpret]… [In this case,] probably the most important thing is to find out why the patient must either talk so much or cannot bear the analyst’s interpretations. That means that besides the actual material he is dealing with and which he might interpret, [the analyst] must not lose sight of this general way of resistance. (Image 43/85)

Klein highlights one possible reason why a patient may experience an interpretation as an attack. She says that, on occasion,
…the content of the material presented is of such a nature that instant and dangerous punishment is awaited. The first feeling when the analyst opens his mouth is that now the scolding or the pronouncement of the judgement has come. (Image 46/85)
Klein turns next to ‘synthesis’, and she uses a vignette to illustrate this:
Synthesis is equated to bringing to life or fighting deadness. But the way it is done by interpretation is sometimes to collect parts of the personality which seem not to be there anymore and which we guess from this bit, and that bit…
Instance: the dream where the dreamer urgently wanted to see what was at the moment her best object [friend]. She [the friend] had a party and did not want to see the dreamer. And everything depended on her [the dreamer] being able at least for a little while to see that person before she undertook some essential thing which all amounted to trying to find herself again. The good object (the person giving the party) stood for one part of herself and she was desperately trying to bring herself together. If she could not find that part, she could not achieve her objective. [My] interpretation was that this [friend] was herself and this was the part [of her] she was struggling to find. Yet she was saying in the analysis that nothing of her was there, that nothing had any meaning, that interpretations had no meaning. But the particular person she chose as the best part of herself had all the qualities which she felt would help her both to re-integrate herself and a good relation with me. That person was not over ambitious, did her job well, was exactly the part of herself which she should find. (Image 49/85)

Further connecting the synthesising function of interpretation to the life instinct, Klein comments:
The analyst’s work in synthesising implies that in the struggle between [the] life and death instincts, which underlies all mental processes, he strengthens the life instinct, the expression of which is synthesis. Insofar as analytic procedure strengthens the derivatives, namely, libido, love and hope, it serves the purposes of the life instinct in its polarity with the death instinct. (Image 83/85)
In her 1961 Narrative of a Child Analysis, Klein discusses synthesis in relation to her child patient Richard. She writes:
It is an essential part of psychoanalytic therapy…that the patient should be enabled by the analyst’s interpretations to integrate the split-off and contrasting aspects of his self; this implies also the synthesis of the split-off aspects of other people and of situations. Such progress in synthesis and integration during an analysis, while giving relief, also brings up anxiety. For the patient is bound to experience the persecutory and depressive anxieties, which were largely responsible for the tendency to split, splitting being one of the fundamental defences against persecutory and depressive anxiety. (p.77)
Klein gives an example from Richard’s ninth session, illustrating her use of interpretation to help him integrate aspects of his mother. She records that,
Richard chose a country on the map to speak about; this time Germany. He said he wanted to whack Hitler and to attack Germany. Then he decided to ‘choose’ France instead. He spoke about France, which betrayed Britain but might not have been able to help it, and he was sorry for France.
Mrs K. pointed out that there were various kinds of Mummy in his mind: the bad Mummy, Germany, whom he wanted to attack in order to destroy Hitler inside her; the injured, and not-so-good Mummy whom he still loved, represented by France; when they came together in his mind, he could not bear to attack Germany, and rather turned to France for whom he could allow himself to feel sorry. (p.49)
Interpretation, which so often aims at the integration or synthesis of objects or the self, may produce guilt and depressive anxiety, Klein remarks in her notes to this session (ibid.). Indeed, she records that Richard soon begins to pick up books, ‘but without interest and seems lost in thought’ (ibid.)

Klein at work: The interpretation of very frightening material

In my last blog post I shared some of Klein’s notes on technique, and on interpretation specifically. These notes did not feature in her Lectures on Technique (Steiner, 2017), but I suggest that they are an interesting accompaniment to them. In the material that I have unearthed here, Klein talks further about interpretation - and we see her at work. One begins to form a vivid picture of her technical approach, and her way of being with her patients.
The following notes come from file PP/KLE/D.3 of the archive, which is titled, ‘Notes on Interpretation, notes on defence’. First, I share a short clinical vignette, which is typed, with added handwriting dating it to 12th March 1942. Klein has headed this vignette, ‘On the effect of interpretations of very frightening material’. She writes:
A woman patient who was in great stress of very deep anxieties in [which] her inside was felt to be like a sewer (her expression); everything deteriorated, in bits, mixed up with each other. In this particular hour the patient had expressed her feelings of dislike of herself – of disgust. The analysis was horrid, confusing, hostile. (PP/KLE/D.3; Image 15/85)

Klein often wrote about herself in the third person - frequently using 'K' as an abbreviation - and she does so here (the following passage appears within parentheses):
Klein’s interpretation was that the patient experienced Klein as if she were the processes going on inside her [the patient], even the bits of faeces, which she felt were mixed up with her bits [presumably the patient’s internal objects and processes]; and that the confusion in her mind which came from analysis was the confusion she herself experienced in her inner world. (Image 15/85)
The interpretation clearly brings relief, and the patient responds by saying, ‘Well, why didn’t you say so to me earlier?’ One imagines that further “groundwork” must have been done to enable the patient to accept such an interpretation. Nonetheless, Klein notes that,
The next part of the hour consisted in clearing up, of understanding and of a positive transference.
The following, longer clinical excerpt, comes from a session with a male patient whom Klein calls ‘O’. This material is also headed, ‘On the effect of interpretations of very frightening material’, and also dated ‘12/3/42’. Klein writes:
The patient in question is highly intellectual, but an unusual mixture of at the same time being capable and very willing to understand about his unconscious processes. He applies an unusual technique of an intellectual kind to that, guided by the wish to master this in the same way as he would an intellectual problem.
… In this particular hour, patient O, in entering the room, associates that tonight, what he felt some time ago as friendly – the curtains drawn, the light on, which evoked memories of the day time at home with his mother, one of the most pleasant memories of the past, tonight did not given the same impression. It was rather sinister, [and] seemed unnecessary because it was not yet dark enough… [It] reminds [O] of ‘the tricks of the trade’. He had expressed his gratitude and satisfaction at the same situation on other occasions. That is why he feels that doing this is to win him over, or to make him friendly after some rather frightening material in the last few hours. (Images 17/ and 19/85)

Again referring to herself in the third person, Klein writes:
(K. reminds him of what he himself has described as the enemy within. That applied to inefficient people in the conduct of our affairs, in contrast to the external enemy whom we have to fight.)
Now he himself caught on this expression ‘enemy within’ and came back to it later. He said that reminds [him]…of Klein’s interpretations of the ‘black sausage’ – an association which he had connected with a man whom he disliked in connection with a woman who he is fond of; and he said that he is dark and unlikeable in his mind. One of the next associations had been to the black sausage.
Now this and other material of internalised persecutors had come up in connection with his drawing Klein’s attention to the remark of the internal enemy. This was the material preceding this hour which started with the sinister impression of Klein’s room and the ‘tricks of the trade’ – expressing the distrust of Klein and her interpretations. It is important that he is constantly thinking of giving up the analysis, for which he had not very urgent motives, because his symptoms are consciously not of a very disturbing kind. He came for a particular reason, but since discovered that his relationships are not what they should be, that his relation to men is not at its best, and makes complications for him.
The fact that there was much unhappiness underneath and that he has dealt with it by getting away from love, or rather distributing it to a number of people, avoiding every tie and arranging his life accordingly: all this has become understood by him, but going with his very great fear of being tied in analysis there is a constant wish to give it up, at the same time preventing him from doing so for rational and irrational reasons.
(After his remarks about the sinister impression, Klein interprets that the last material was concerned with internal persecutors, his internal fears, and that now Klein’s room seemed probably full of the same things; and also that the internal enemies and processes which Klein interpreted to him, when they are experienced by him are transferred on to her – she becomes the representative of them.)
A moment after this, O turned round, looking into Klein’s face, and said with a voice more warm and friendly than she had ever heard in him: ‘I really hope that you do not believe that my remarks about tricks of the trade are of great importance. They are just fleeting associations. I really am very grateful to you for what you are doing for me, and I want you to know that’. After lying back again, O says that he thought Klein would probably be interested why he sat up; but he did feel that he wanted to look into her face and to tell her the affectionate feeling which he just had at that moment.
(K. interpreted the fact that giving him an interpretation referring to the aspect of K in which she was mixed up with his internal affairs and so on, made it possible for him to compare these feelings and aspects of her with ones nearer to reality, and allowed the friendly feelings to come up.) In a page entitled, ‘Draft summary on interpretations’ (image 50/85), Klein reflects that it is through interpretation that the patient is helped to ‘face his psychic reality’, and to compare this to external experiences which can become so coloured and distorted by phantasy.
Just this sort of process occurs when patient O experiences the drawn curtains and warm light of Klein’s consulting room as a trick, or an attempt to win him over following a difficult period in the analysis. O is helped by Klein to see that her consulting room becomes, in his experience, full of the internal persecutors they have been discussing. One result of this interpretive work is a very clear liberation of affectionate feelings. Klein writes:
[The] patient [is] enabled to compare phantasy situation with real situation, with consequent diminution of aggression. Repressed love feelings coming to the fore, as a result of diminished persecution. Interpretation reduces projection and splitting, increases hope and reparative tendencies. The analyst [is] turned into a good object and the[re is a] weakening of the negative transference.

On interpretation

Melanie Klein delivered her Lectures on Technique (edited with a critical review by John Steiner in 2017) to Candidates of the British Psychoanalytical Society for the first time in 1936. In these lectures, Klein directly addressed the subject of interpretation, alongside the ‘analytic attitude’, transference and countertransference, phantasy and grievance.
At the time she began the lecture series, there had been quite a sea change in analytic technique, following Klein’s work on early anxiety situations and the defences against them. Psychoanalysts, she thought, were increasingly approaching anxiety more directly, regarding it as necessary to ‘liberate small quantities’ of anxiety in order to prevent a ‘dangerous accumulation’ of it (Klein, in Steiner, p.57). Interpretation, of course, was the analyst’s main means of achieving this.
Klein agreed with Strachey (1934), that an interpretation could be felt by both patient and analyst as a ‘magic weapon’ (Steiner, 2017, p.54). However, her Lectures suggest that she felt more that interpretations were ‘feelers towards the unconscious’, a ‘means of exploring… unconscious phantasy’ (Ibid, p.23), and hypotheses for the patient to consider, rather than ‘a way of providing knowledge or insight from on high’ (Ibid, p.14). Klein’s Lectures, Steiner remarks, ‘come across as entirely modern’ (p.1), and there is no doubt that her inclusion of vivid clinical material, to illustrate the impact of interpretation, makes them especially engaging.
Recently I have been exploring file PP/KLE/D.3 of the archive, which is entitled, ‘Notes on interpretation, notes on defences’. Here, Klein makes a number of other points about interpretation, which are interesting to consider alongside her Lectures on Technique. She addresses, for example, the importance for the analyst of being ‘self-critical enough’ to pace and judge the impact of their interventions, and also underlines the value of remaining silent on occasion, even for long periods - and even when the patient demands it.
In an early part of file D.3, Klein writes,
It seems to me a central problem for psychoanalysts… to decide the right balance between interpretation and allowing the patient’s associations and material free and uninterrupted flow. (PP/KLE/D.3; Image 5/85)

We no doubt develop each an individual technique, though based on certain fundamental principles, according to our personality and [the] particular gifts and deficiencies in us. Some people are quicker in seeing things, and for them the temptation to convey to the patient quickly might be greater. Others, being slower in their perception, and also less inclined to speak, might be inclined to wait too long and fall for this temptation. There is no danger either way if we are self-critical enough to watch our steps and the reasons for our mistakes. (Image 7/85)
On the matter of the analyst, on occasion, restricting his ‘talk and interpretations’, Klein emphasises the need to ‘silently co-operate’ with the patient, and to take into account the patient’s history. With reference to a child patient, she recalls,
I have tried not to interpret at the beginning of an analysis [and] I [shall] give one instance of the kind. [In the case of a] boy who didn’t speak for so long, [I] refrain[ed] from interpreting for some weeks in order to gain the confidence of the child through more or less silent cooperation. This child had a father who had overwhelmed him with speech and constant interference, and the silence of the child was in some way connected with this attitude of the father. This attempt was instructive because, when I did take up interpretations, the difference it made in the progress of this analysis was all the more striking. (Image 9/85)
Klein emphasises, as she had in her earlier Lectures, that,
…we must keep our minds and technique flexible. There are cases, and this child was one of them, in which we might have very much to restrict our talk and interpretations, and miss interpretations rather than stir too much anxiety. (Image 9/85)

Later on, Klein stresses that the patient should always feel he has enough ‘free rope’ to talk. However, even in the case of silent patients, she suggests that plenty of room should be left by the analyst, though it may be tempting to say more:
[...] even silent patients sometimes cannot bear at certain stages of the analysis the analyst’s talking. There is nothing easier than to overdo one or the other attitude. I found that with great care and patience, one can arrive at a compromise in these cases, and that having given the patient free reign for the largest part of the hour or complied with his necessity to remain silent for a time, I could bring in some interpretations at some junctures, or at the end of the hour. Finally, Klein gives the example of another young patient who literally restricts the amount of words Klein can use in an interpretation. Klein shows that her compliance with the patient’s demands enables the analytic work to go on until such time as the patient can tolerate her more usual way of making interpretations:
An extreme case was a boy with strong psychotic and delinquent features and liable to great violence, with whom I could at some stages of the analysis only interpret when he gave me formal permission for it. At hours of great anxiety it happened that the only interpretation could be given when he was already going out of the door from the hall. A few times he restricted me to giving the interpretation in 10 words, and it was not a small feat to put the most important interpretation into these 10 words. But I did not find even in this extreme case that I had to stick to this method. As soon as anxiety had diminished I could interpret more again, and strikingly enough even the 10 word interpretations couched in the most important words only, had repeatedly the effect of diminishing anxiety as well as the fact that I had submitted to this condition, I proceeded to more normal ways of interpretation. On the prophylactic value of play

In my last blog post I shared some of Melanie Klein’s notes on friendship, found in file PP/KLE/C.9 of the archive. The material I’ve unearthed this time comes from the same file, but here we see Klein reflecting on the importance of play in the early relationship between the mother and her infant/child, and that between the infant/child and other important individuals in his or her life, including siblings. Klein’s focus here is the impact of the child’s experience of play on their development and overall happiness, and she draws on her work with an adult patient to highlight the suffering that may follow when a mother doesn’t play with her child.
We can see Klein reflecting carefully upon the subtle interplay of external and internal or constitutional factors, which has such a bearing on the infant and, later, child’s subjective experience of the world, environment, and other people. She takes into account, for example, the infant’s ‘responsive attitude’, as well as the capacity of the mother or others to really engage with the infant, for instance by getting down and playing ‘on the nursery floor’. She also points to the mitigating function of happy play, which helps an individual to bear conflict and worry, and lessens the sense of a gap between the generations.
As with many of her notes, those reproduced here are typed up, though clearly still in the process of being thought through and developed, with handwritten annotations, corrections and sometimes lines drawn through words and passages.

The first play therapy – a prophylactic one – starts with the mother’s playing with her child. The baby early responds to a playful attitude on the part of the people around him, and much is gained by this responsive attitude of the baby. Play between mother and baby contributes greatly to their happy relation. Furthermore, the playing together of children in the home, and next, with other playmates in the kindergarten – all the settings in which children play together or grown-ups play with children – are of great prophylactic value.
In the psycho-analysis of grown-ups one can see how these memories of happy play with mother or brothers and sisters or friends make up for much worry and conflict of different kinds, and produce a very strong tie between members of the same family. A home where there is no play in common remains cold, and there will be a wide gap between the child and his parents.
An adult patient of mine, a man who was not liable to cry, had an outburst of tears and cried an hour through when he remembered that his mother had never played with him on the nursery floor. She had been very fond of him, and he had been accustomed to go into the drawing room and was allowed to play there for a while. But that to him was never real play. On the nursery floor one could behave much more freely, need not take so much care to keep clean – actually, one could more readily express one’s phantasies.

Klein notes the important role of play, as well as imagination, in liberating unconscious phantasy. Without such a liberation of phantasy within an environment that can receive and not be too alarmed by it, the personality may remain, or become, significantly constricted. Klein continues:
Play in common increases love and trust, improves human relationships, and helps the child to overcome fears. For instance, let us take the game of a child who is pretending that he is shooting lions in the jungle (represented by a few chairs), or who is harpooning whales, from a couch which represents the ship. If the mother can join in such a game (and she may be asked to do so if the relation between herself and her child is good enough) then not only does she share pleasure with him but she is felt to be a helper, a good figure, as it were, against the bad and dangerous beings of his phantasies, which are represented by lions and whales…. (File PP/KLE/C.9; Images 42/, 43/ and 44/76)
Such experiences of play with trusted others, Klein writes, are:
… of the greatest importance for future relationships to people… It is an invaluable gain for the child’s mental and intellectual development, and for his happiness, if by means of play he can liberate his unconscious phantasies and express his impulses of various kinds. (Image 46/76)
Klein continues:
Every child is in the greatest need of a really understanding love as a support against his fears derived from internal sources. The mother’s love and understanding can hardly be expressed in a more suitable way than by becoming a good playmate to her child. In doing so she no doubt achieves something of which she may very well not be at all aware, that is, that she really understands her child, by which I mean that she unconsciously feels what goes on in the child’s unconscious… Furthermore, the gratifications which the child shares with the people who play with him help him to gain trust in them, and thus become the foundation for an improved relation between the child and grown-ups in general. The grown-up person who plays with the child in a way which responds to the child’s mind… puts himself on a level with the child and does away with the great gap which exists between the[m.] (Image 48/76)
Finally, on imagination and play, Klein writes:
The connection between the child’s imagination and his play is an obvious one. One can easily observe how the child can make a plaything of any object, and that he is guided by his imagination when doing so. That the child’s imagination is more strongly at work than that of the adult has probably always been understood, and the relation between play and imagination more or less recognised. But it has been left to psycho-analysis to discover the wealth and depth of the child’s phantasy life and also the importance of these phantasies for his whole development. Psycho-analysis has found that the child’s phantasies can be developed and play an important part in his later activities and sublimations. So true is this that one can say that a too strong repression of his phantasies inhibits the development of activities and sublimations and impoverishes his whole personality. It appeared that whatever can be seen and observed of the child’s imaginative life is on the whole a very small and weak expression of what goes on in the depths of his mind. (Images 60/ and 61/76)

Klein on friendship

This month I have been exploring file PP/KLE/C.9 of the archive, which contains some of Klein’s preparatory notes for her 1937 paper, ‘Love, Guilt and Reparation’. This paper can be found in the later collection of Klein’s works of the same name, but its first appearance was in a book that Klein co-authored with Joan Riviere, entitled Love, Hate and Reparation (1937). In his preface to this book, John Rickman explains that Klein and Riviere were trying, ‘to convey in everyday language some of the deeper mental processes which underlie the everyday actions and feelings of normal men and women’. Klein’s paper formed the second half of the book, whilst Joan Riviere’s paper, ‘Hate, Greed and Aggression’, constituted the first.
‘Love, Guilt and Reparation’ is a fascinating read, and perhaps the most accessible of all Klein’s papers. (In fact, these two papers by Klein and Riviere formed part of a series of lectures organised by the Institute of Psycho-Analysis in 1936, entitled ‘The Emotional Life of Civilised Men and Women’.) Written for a lay audience, it sets out to highlight some of the unconscious processes at work in many ordinary life situations or developmental stages. As such, it is an excellent place to start if you are reading Klein for the first time, or want to be reminded of how her complex theory pertains to the very familiar problems faced by us all. Beginning with ‘The Emotional Situation of the Baby’, Klein’s paper addresses topics such as, ‘Love and Conflicts in Relation to the Parents’, ‘Parenthood’, ‘Relationships in School Life’ and ‘Love and Creativeness’. In the section entitled, ‘Friendships in Adult Life’, Klein writes:
Only if we have successfully dealt with our hatred and jealously, dissatisfaction and grievance against our mother, and have succeeded in being happy in seeing her happy, in feeling that we have not injured her or that we can repair the injury done in phantasy, are we capable with true identification with another woman. Possessiveness and grievance, which lead to over-strong demands, are disturbing elements in friendship; indeed, over-strong emotions altogether are likely to undermine it. Whenever this happens, one finds, on psycho-analytical investigation, that early situations of unsatisfied desires, of grievance, of greed or jealousy, have broken through, i.e. though current episodes may have started the trouble, an unresolved conflict from infancy plays an important part in the break-up of the friendship. It is not is likely to succeed if we expect too much of it, i.e. expect the friend to make up for our early deprivations. (Klein, 1937/1975, p.332)
In her notes, presumably for the section, ‘Friendships in Adult Life’, Klein writes:
Too devoted friendships… are probably unstable. A certain capacity to be satisfied with a certain amount of love and understanding without demanding too much… [is probably beneficial]. If friendship is so much needed for reassurance, for alleviating fears, for being helped and praised, [this is]… a great hindrance to a real friendship. A certain amount of self-sufficiency is needed and the capacity to share certain things with certain people may be the basis of good friendships. One may be an excellent friend with somebody who is not specifically interested in one’s line of work, even where work may mean a great deal to the person himself. (File PP/KLE/C.9; Image 64/76)

Connecting later friendships to the earliest relationships in the child’s life, Klein continues:
Some friendships will be successful just because certain features of the relationships which one had with one’s mother or sister or father or brother can be repeated, at the same time as certain wishes which could not be satisfied in the [early] relationships can now be gratified. (Image 65/76)

Then, considering difficulties in adult friendships, Klein gives an example of how early dynamics can be painfully reactivated, even leading to the end of a friendship:
Whenever a friendship between women is broken, though this may be due to difficulties in the present, past emotional situations always play a part in bringing this about. Let us say one of the friends, whom we will call A, had always taken the lead to a certain extent, and this was felt by B as a friendly and kind support. If A becomes more dominating in a way that makes B feel too dependent, B may be hurt by this and resent it bitterly… Though the trouble is due to a new situation, it is a very old one that contributes to the disturbance. A kind though definite mother who either corresponds to the real mother in the past or one whom B wanted to have, has changed into a very different figure. For [B], an exacting mother has appeared, dependence upon whom is humiliating and frightening… This has had the effect, furthermore, that B unconsciously feels that the fruitful relation of give and take is now disturbed. Her unconscious sense of guilt may lead her to feel that she has too little love to give her friend, and this stirs her anxiety about past aggressive phantasies against her mother. The effect may be (I am choosing only one of the many possible unconscious reactions) that she has to turn away from this loved person who has become frightening. The little girl’s unconscious feelings of hatred and rivalry against her mother in connection with her father are… a serious source of disturbance in her relation to her mother. This disturbance may be renewed in the changed relation to her friend, for A’s dominating attitude among other things has stirred B’s feelings of rivalry, which in the deepest analysis is the rivalry of the little girl with the mother for her father’s love – an accessory of her heterosexual tendencies. (Images 66/, 67/, 68/76)
Here, in this file at least, Klein’s notes on friendship end. It is an interesting final comment she makes about the possible impact of a friend’s ‘dominating attitude’, and how stirring this may be of the rivalry and aggression which are first felt in the context of the infant-mother relationship. It is also clear, however, from Klein’s 1937 paper and her notes, that she felt good friendships in later life were very much helped by satisfactory early infant-mother relations, and by the successful working-through of their more problematic elements.
Next month’s blog will highlight Klein’s belief in the enormous importance of the mother being able to play with her infant and later child – on the nursery floor, no less. I will share some materials that illustrate just how crucial she thought the external relationship between mother and infant actually was, for the child’s later friendships and love relations.

Sibling rivalry and death wishes

In this latest communication from the ever-fascinating Klein archive, I present more material from file D.23 (‘Notes for intended paper on memory’). In the last blog post I introduced Klein’s patient ‘C’, who brought to her analysis a highly condensed cover memory: she had been left alone in her pram in a conservatory, and could hear her parents and visitors gathered in an adjoining room. Her feelings of exclusion and rejection were profound. Klein said that this memory was only ‘[o]ne situation of feeling deserted and left alone [that] covered a number of emotional situations, fundamental for her relationships and development.’
In this post I have brought out more of Klein’s notes on patient C, the focus here being on sibling rivalry. Klein highlights her patient’s murderous hatred toward both her younger brother and younger sister, as revealed in two dreams. Klein writes that death wishes against these siblings aroused enormous anxiety in the patient, and that one effect of this was to motivate loving, even maternal feelings towards her siblings. Guilt in relation to her phantasied attacks also ‘loaded her with an eternal obligation’, at least in relation to her sister, Klein observes. As elsewhere in the archive and her published writings, Klein refers to herself intermittently in the third person, as ‘Mrs K’, and the first person. These pages are typed, with some handwritten corrections and annotations.

10th September 1957
After returning from holiday reported the following dream to which she gave some associations beforehand. Her sister who had been all her life extremely depressive, and is under treatment, she found very much improved after this holiday. She herself has done a great deal for this sister. She has always, she remembers, even as a child been worried about her. Her sister is about 4½ years younger than she, but the patient felt on seeing her sister well, that she hated her. She thought it was not so much that she had been to her a burden and trouble but that since she is now better she felt like a rival.
In the dream she saw that sister very well and walking in the light but behind her was another figure of the sister in the shade and after the first part and intending to strangle that first aspect of the sister. She herself said that obviously the sister is here splitting into one which is better and one which is possibly relapsing. The interpretation was that it also represents the patient wising to strangle the sister since she had confessed to hating her.
Patient C was then keen to tell me a dream which she had had a few nights before. It referred to her eldest brother who was born when she was 18 months old. They were on a big boat and there was somebody who seemed to be the captain and seemed to be above them and then suddenly her brother dived from the boat to have a swim, he always was a passionate and excellent swimmer, better than the patient herself who was also a good swimmer. After a while, when he had not yet returned, the patient with her husband went into a barge to get to a post office, but it was also to search for the brother, and then she seemed not to return any more to the boat but landed up at her home which was quite different from her present or past home and had a very large room which was on two levels with a step to go down. Some of the people from the boat were also there and she was preparing to settle down in this home and also to offer something to the guests when her brother appeared. He was dripping with water and absolutely white. Her sister and other people of the party wanted to reproach him for having been so long in the water, but the patient said one should not do so, it was obvious he had “gone to the very end.” She felt he had been drowned and had come back from the dead.
The way in which I connected the two dreams was the death wishes against the rival brother who appeared when the patient was 18 months old, linking it with the strangling and hate of the sister which the patient had herself associated. I suggested that during her mother’s first pregnancy the patient had felt death wishes against the baby inside the mother but that it was the big womb of the mother, which was the big room on two levels because the lower part of the body was not as big as the abdomen. The death wishes against the brother made her feel he was in a dangerous situation inside the mother’s body and when he was born he might not be very white as in the dream but reddish as newborn babies are. The patient said that she actually remembered seeing the babies her mother had soon after their birth, so coming back from the dead may have meant that the terrible things which the patient phantasised happened inside her mother’s body through her death wishes had been undone and it was a great relief to her to find that there was an alive baby whom in time she got very fond of. She had altogether been very maternal towards these younger children.

When I interpreted the second dream in connection with the sister dream the patient strongly emphasised that the kind of hate which she felt was quite different from the annoyance and hate about being bothered so much and her sister being so much of a burden; it was a different type because she actually felt that it was hate as a rival.
I linked these death wishes and the jealousy of the newborn babies with the important pram memory which C had mentioned to me at the beginning of her analysis. I suggested that the other people in the room might have been the newborn brother and later sister and that the resentment about feeling neglected connected with the birth of the children. It also led to a very strong feeling of guilt towards the brother and sister whom she got to like very much and later on were her playmates. The guilt particularly extended to her sister because the patient remembered having worried about her when she was 11 or 12 years old because the sister was so depressed and that actually contributed to the patient being very maternal to this brother and sister, to whom the mother did not give enough time. It loaded her with an eternal obligation toward that sister’s trouble and that explained why when the trouble lessened the patient could experience the original hatred against a rival quite easily.

Klein on ‘Cover memories’

In my last blog post I presented some of Klein's notes from file PP/KLE/D.23, entitled 'Notes for intended paper on memory' and dating from 1958. I wanted to continue with the theme of memory, and to shine a light on some more material from this very interesting file, so I’m reproducing a couple of paragraphs in which Klein discusses a 'cover memory' brought to her by patient 'C' (this particular clinical material is dated 10th September 1957). As Steiner (2017) has noted, Klein uses 'cover memory' in place of Freud’s ‘screen memory’, though it appears to be exactly the same concept, as you will see below.
The memory in question here is one that patient C reports at the start of her analysis. It is a memory she feels has been with her all her life, and one which Klein felt was ‘of fundamental importance to her whole development’. The patient herself, Klein notes, felt that the memory accounted for her having turned away from her parents, and for her whole emotional attitude towards them. Klein makes very clear that she felt such memories, recoverable in analysis as ‘memories in feeling’, were really only understandable in the context of a patient’s earliest experiences, including his or her relation to the breast. She also remarks on the value of memory, and evidently feels she is building on Freud’s ideas about the importance of ‘excavating’ memory and reconstructing it in analysis.

[S]he was lying in her pram in a conservatory and in the room which adjoined the conservatory were her parents and other people. It was a dining room and guests were also received there, so she thought they might be some people visiting her parents. She had a feeling of being completely ejected and rejected and that her attitude of cutting herself off from the parents and making herself independent and indifferent towards them which set in very early with her was linked with this memory.

It is an interesting point that the patient maintained that the pram situation was a memory going back to the first year. She had been convinced that this was a memory. In the course of my interpretation she agreed that it was possible she was in the second year, which would have been the time when the mother was pregnant and the baby born. The details she gave me about the situation were apparently actual memories. She knew she was lying in the pram in the conservatory, that the door led into the dining room where her parents often saw visitors and she remembered entirely the locality. One would say that the memory may or may not have been like that, but part of it was a memory. What we meet here is an actual cover memory and the details of the material I have given show how such a cover memory comes about. One situation of feeling deserted and left alone covered a number of emotional situations, fundamental for her relationships and development. It was as it were transfixed into the one situation and I should never have been able to unravel these situations condensed into that memory if the analysis had not led, as was the case, into very great depths including earliest breast relations to the mother, and so on. I therefore would maintain that the value of memories, which is not doubted, has to be considered from this angle. The deeper the analysis leads the earlier stages are recovered. The more the patient can re-experience quite early situations which may not be available as memory traces but which imply what I would describe as memories in feelings the conclusion would be that our whole attitude towards the value and meaning of memories has to be reconsidered. There is no doubt that whenever memory reappears in analysis it is of value, as Freud always assumed, but the full value lies in getting behind this memory, which very often is a cover memory and this can only be understood by enabling the patient to experience the emotions, the internal situations and the external ones, which are bound up with this memory.
In another note Klein continues to reflect upon the value of recovering memories, or memories in feeling, in analysis. She discusses the ‘understructure’ of memory and again refers to Freud, noting that his ‘discovery of the importance of memories has often been taken in too narrow a sense’.
Notes on Unconscious Memories
The analysis of deep layers of the mind leads to what I have described as memories in feelings. Patients re-experience earlier situations and these experiences often lead to the memories of actual situations. It is also frequently the other way round, that a memory coming up in analysis only proves its value if it can get behind what is usually only condensed in that memory, and these are emotions, situations which takes us back into the past. Freud’s discovery of the importance of memories has often been taken in too narrow a sense. A memory coming up from the unconscious is always of value and interest, but only if the background and the situations which are condensed in that memory are fully explored. I think, in the developments of psycho-analysis, the coming up of memories without exploring the emotions, situations, etc which are the understructure of this memory, has become a shibboleth which is of no great value. I believe that, when Freud recognized the importance of memory, what he was pointing out was the need to reconstruct the past in as many details as possible, but this is not achieved if a memory is not taken in the sense which I have just explained. We must also remember Freud’s discovery of cover memories. I believe that an isolated memory is always a cover memory and crying out for exploration of what lies behind it. I have found that the consistent analysis of transference, negative and positive, is bound to lead to the exploration of the past and does in no way preclude memories in the general sense of the word, but allows for the deeper understanding of such memories.

First blog by our new Archivist Christine English - Klein on Memory

A brief introduction: I’m Christine English, and this is my first blog post as the new Archivist for the Melanie Klein Trust, taking over the position from Jane Milton. Jane introduced me to the Melanie Klein archive some years ago, since which time I have been looking particularly closely at Klein's record of her work with an adult patient, Mr B – this was brought to light by John Steiner in recent years, when he published Klein's Lectures on Technique (Steiner, 2019).
I am delighted that, in taking on this blog, which Jane originated and developed, I will have the opportunity to continue her work sharing Klein's thinking on a vast array of topics. In this first post, I pick up where Jane left off, looking at what Klein has to say on the subject of memory.
File D.23 of the archive is entitled, ‘Notes for intended paper on memory’, and is dated 1958. The file is short, and contains a mix of clinical notes, fragments of thoughts on the subject of memory, and more developed ideas that Klein clearly had in mind for a paper. It is likely that, as she was gathering these notes, Klein was also thinking back over her own life, since 1959 was taken up with writing her autobiography.
At the start of the file there is a newspaper article which Klein saved from September 1958, that is pertinent to the subject of memory. It is written by the Scottish poet and translator of Kafka, Edwin Muir. In his article, Muir remarks that what sets aside the great novelists is, ‘the extensiveness, exactitude and free availability of their memory’.
Their characters, he argues, ‘remind us of how little of our own experience we have preserved intact, and how inevitably it has leaked away into a kind of nothingness’. How then does one ‘preserve memory intact’? Muir argues that it is through the immediate imbuing of experience with personal meaning, a capacity which the great novelists possess. These novelists notice things, Muir writes; they ‘seize…the meaning of word and gesture in their passing’.
It is not difficult to see why Klein would have been moved by these words. She had made it her life’s work to study, in the finest detail, the particular and often very problematic ways in which her patients imbued their experience with meaning. I expect she would also have been deeply interested in the kind of mental freedom Muir was describing. The article is so engaging, it is little wonder that it captured Klein’s imagination. Next in the file, Klein makes a couple of statements on memory, without elaborating upon these. First, she writes:
Forgetting somebody is killing them in the deep unconscious. Therefore any painful situation or person forgotten is killed. In the Bible “his name shall be forgotten” is one of the curses.
Secondly, she notes that,
Not building up memories sufficiently strong [sic] is one basis for the loss of memory, at a later age.
This point seems to be very much connected with Muir’s idea that that experience must be imbued with meaning in the first place in order to become memorable.
There is then a longer note headed, ‘Note to paper on memory’. Klein reflects here upon why a perception - necessary, of course, for the creation of a memory - may be interrupted:

All the time perception has been cut out of various things in order to avoid a conscious realisation of something which would have made the splitting impossible. The pain of consciously perceiving would be too great. But it is more than that, because it would not allow the splitting which had been successful to continue.
Even in a normal person definite perceptions are cut out. During a session I moved my briefcase which immediately meant to the patient that I had been putting down the dream in writing. After a whole train of associations had finished, he became aware of that “hallucinatory” feeling going on while he was speaking. There was every reason against thinking I would have done that, but he had a hallucinatory conviction. Why had he left it out? That brought us to leaving out things in infancy, noises, suspicions about parents’ intercourse, etc. If the conscious perception had been there, splitting could not have been maintained.
This perception of reality goes on simultaneously with the inner feelings of conflict etc but is kept separate. Reality is split off.
Finally, I present a clinical vignette that Klein titled, ‘Recovery of a Childhood Memory During Analysis’. Here, she shows how work in analysis can liberate memories that have previously been denied:

The patient, a man of 35 years – came to analysis because of an acute breakdown in which he was very depressed – apparently precipitated by his deciding to get engaged to his girlfriend. A similar episode had occurred under the same circumstances 8 years previously. A great deal of homosexual material was produced during the first months of analysis and though he allowed me to give the interpretations about this he always denied that he was aware of it.
He also revealed that at the age of 8 years he had a fight with another boy in which he (the patient) was concussed – but ill in an emotionally disturbed way for several months afterwards – and when I interpreted that he felt it had been a sexual fight between them he very strongly denied anything of the sort. About six months later when he had been able to admit his conscious homosexual feelings in the present situation – he referred again to the fight when he was eight and he now said he remembered that he had started it by making a grab at the other boy’s penis – and this was why he had knocked him out.

Memories in feelings

This will be my (Jane Milton’s) last blog post before handing over to the new Melanie Klein Trust archivist, Christine English. I know that Christine has already identified some very interesting archival material that she will be sharing on the blog - which I am certainly looking forward to reading.
So, to round off my always stimulating, fruitful time exploring the Klein archives (though I will continue to refer to them) here are some clinical notes I came across recently, which I hope will be thought-provoking.
Klein discusses what she calls ‘memories in feelings’ several times in the third and fourth volumes of her Writings. For example, an important footnote to page 180 of Envy and Gratitude reads:
All this [referring to early phantasies concerning the breast] is felt by the infant in much more primitive ways than language can express. When these pre-verbal emotions and phantasies are revived in the transference situation, they appear as ‘memories in feelings’, as I would call them, and are reconstructed and put into words with the help of the analyst. In the same way, words have to be used when we are reconstructing and describing other phenomena belonging to the early stages of development. In fact we cannot translate the language of the unconscious into consciousness without lending it words from our conscious realm (Klein 1957).
In archive file PP/KLE/D.11, I found a detailed and complicated example of a ‘memory in feeling’, together with Klein’s interpretations of and reflections on it, in the analysis of a man in his late forties, whom she calls ‘Mr X’.
In the second half of file D.11, Klein discusses the difficulties that the patient is having, in integrating feelings towards his parents with the analytic transference situation. The analyst is sometimes spared the complex and contradictory negative feelings felt towards the primary objects, while, at other times, the situation with the parents is idealised, and the analysis and analyst denigrated. The following material appears in the digitised collection as images 18, 20 and 22-28 (omitting some pages which are crossed out and do not appear to belong to the sequence):

I could give you many more instances of attitudes, which have all in common the attempt on the part of the patient to avoid a synthesis between the various aspects of figures and relations, which have come to focus on the analyst. The point here is that the synthesis, which the patient has not been able to establish sufficiently in the past is bound up in the various anxieties coming to the fore. The analyst is loved and hated, as other people in the patient’s life were earlier on, and the patient resorts to all sorts of defences and among them the process of splitting figures and situations, in order to avoid the relations that these various aspects represent, the various aspects of the mother and father. It is, therefore, our work to help him to experience again and again - and this is a slow process we know - the realisation, that he has only divided up, split his ego, his relations with people, and the people themselves, in the attempt to avoid conflict, anxiety and guilt. Our interpretations aim at synthesis, but the synthesis can only be achieved piecemeal, and again and again the patient has to be confronted with experiencing conflict and suffering, which he has tried to avoid in the past.

Re memories in feelings: (to George)
[George is a child Klein saw between the ages of 3 and 8, in the 1930s, who appears in two of the ‘restricted’ files B.39 and B.40]
This brings me to a point which applies to adults as well as to some extent to children. We know how important it is to revive in our patients[’] memories. We however also know that such memories can be extremely falsified. This is included in the concept of cover memories. So while it is beneficial to get as many memories as possible, it is in connection with emotions, desires, anxieties which partly led to these memories, and which these past experiences were connected with, that we have to understand any situation in the past as well as in the present. We should never rest content with just having past experiences as it were reconstructed in the analysis, because we must not treat them as it were as isolated events. Only if we are able to bring out the whole situation of feelings, anxieties, fitting into the development as a whole, we can feel that we have benefitted sufficiently from the revival of memories. Now there would probably be no difference of opinion on that point. I still think it is worthwhile mentioning, for there are stages of development of which we cannot get memories in the full sense of the word, expressed by words, and in the clear-cut way in which memories of a later stage may appear. And yet they are memories of feelings.
Refer back to Mary in this connection - reproducing the situation of the baby (lamb) with all the oral details attached to it [it is not clear to whom Klein is referring here]
A VERY EARLY MEMORY IN FEELING
Man Patient X (age: just under fifty) 8th February 1946
In identification with the little child who was teething and woke at night repeatedly crying, the father felt suddenly, having just woken from sleep, what an “awful thing was going on in the child”. He had a vision of something growing out of the soft mouth, flesh being contrasted here to something very hard like spikes which were somehow thrust on him (because by now he felt it happening to himself and not to the child) and being forced to push these spikes together. (this was shown by a gesture). And a terrible feeling how awful that must be. At this moment, when visualising the spikes coming together, he had a vision of these hard things outside him, and “death-head” was the next association to it. The feeling of grievance that he could not stop that happening, that this whole thing had been thrust on him, that something had made these spikes come out, and that he had no more control over these spikes because again something forced him to push these spikes together.
Now these feelings he found extremely difficult to put into words, while he was otherwise very vocal. It seemed as if they just could not be put into words. And he fully agreed when I suggested that this incapacity was due to the fact that such things may be felt but not thought of in words at a very early stage. The one stimulus for experiencing what quite obviously was a memory in feeling was the identification with the little daughter. Another is the transference situation at the moment.
In the preceding hour some guilt about leaving the responsibility all his life too much with other people, or rather a tendency towards that which was very much controlled, had come up. Facing that, a very high appreciation of the value of the analysis and the effects, and a feeling of unworthiness in having it, had become quite clear. A particular association was leaving the responsibility for sweets (tuck at school) with the mother. He would not take sweets with him after the holidays, but she should rather send them. They were packed into a tin, and there seemed something very wrong about that, an inexplicable feeling that it was not, as it were, her job to send them in a way which left some responsibility with her which she should not have. This had connected with feelings that however valuable the analysis might be, he does not make the best of it, or won’t do in the future.
My suggestion in the preceding hour had been that he would use the interpretations, and the analysis, in the wrong way, that he would not make the best of it. Now an association produced on the 7th was that after having left me, at the moment of going out of the room, he had suddenly had an association that in fact he would make use of the analysis in such a way that it would improve his earning capacity, and he disliked the thought that he would use it to make money.
Now there are here two trends of thought which became quite clear in the present hour: The good thing, the milk, the nipple, taken in would be changed into faeces and thus be completely destroyed – money making – bad purposes.
This is the way in which the nipple, and now my interpretations, would be treated while being taken in. The object would be destroyed, the “death head”, which himself felt was a later elaboration of what was felt dangerously destroyed in those early days, is the object- in this case me. Therefor the tin in which the sweets were packed is not only his inside in which he should not take the sweets, but it is more specifically the mouth and the teeth (the edges of the tin).
The very strong feeling that it was not his fault, because it was pushed, thrust on him, seems to connect with the nipple being pushed into him. And here the object itself becomes the teeth, a condensation of what is being done to the object and reflected in his attitude towards him. Also why was the nipple given to him? But there seemed to have been in fact at the very beginning of feeding great difficulties because the mother had been very ill, and X has a feeling- not supported by what he had heard- that for some time she could not have fed him. In his view, since she was so ill at his birth, some weeks could have elapsed before she could feed him. A view which seems rather phantastic when he was going over it in this hour, because what would have happened to the milk?
He had been told that his breast feeding otherwise had been normal up to about 8 months but with the strong feeling that to begin with there had been a long gap, a very long time before he started on it. The present impression was that he might have had very great difficulties in taking the nipple, perhaps because of a break in the beginning or perhaps because of fears, as the mother, who was on the whole affectionate and patient, was apt to be erratic and if things did not go well, impatient. The possibility appears that if at the beginning of the feeding there had been difficulties due to starting a little too late with the breast being given and to his difficulties, she might have been impatient and thrust the nipple into his mouth.
Very fundamental attitudes seem to be connected with this. Incapacity to make use of very great gifts in him, of choosing, or trying to get the best thing, to make use of opportunities – against that in the same way a tendency to thrust responsibility on to others which was in fact not carried out. A very strong drive to get the best opportunities and also to make use of them, but with a constant conflict over these two attitudes which no doubt had to some extent a paralysing effect.
An interesting point is the vision of the “death head” in front of the mouth, outside. It seems to show so closely the process of the object still outside and at the same time already internalised and again externalised – on the boundary. As well as the actual external object, the nipple, changed into this destroyed object.
Memories in feelings are not an unknown fact. But this should be put versus what is called “memories”. I find them in such ways also with adults, that the whole situation becomes alive. All this shows in attitudes and is connected with the transference situation.

Klein on the value of splitting

Melanie Klein was always clear that binary good-bad splitting, combined with projective identification, was a developmental achievement: an intrinsic aspect of the paranoid-schizoid position, and essential for the establishment and preservation of the good (albeit idealised) internal and external object. The notes reproduced below do not cover new theoretical ground, but they do contain a real emotional resonance, making them well worth drawing to readers’ attention.
The notes can be found in archive file C.29, which contains some of Klein’s thoughts relating to her last, posthumously published paper, ‘On the Sense of Loneliness’ (1963), along with a few letters and other related items. Some of this later material on loneliness was recently published (Milton 2018 and 2020), but these particular pages on splitting have not yet, I believe, seen the light of day. Written in the last year of Klein’s life, when she may have been having intimations that her health was beginning to seriously fail, the notes of C.29 carry an emotional urgency – even passion – and she expresses herself almost poetically at times.
I find her thoughts about couples particularly intriguing here. Klein had not been happy in her own marriage, which ended before her move to England in 1925. However, she is able to observe long and happy partnerships with a sympathetic eye; those relationships in which a couple come to be so much in projective identification with each other, that they seem to grow together as a single tree. Note also, that there is no hint of over-idealisation of the separateness supposed to be achieved in the depressive position.

NOTE RE CHARACTER
Character and aggression against the enemy – this also includes aggression against part of oneself which is on the side of the enemy. In this way the good object is protected.
The strength of character which can maintain the fight against the attacks on the good objects…There is a lot of splitting in the capacity to hold one part of oneself down. One part of oneself stands for something which is of value – the other part is hostile. If you really try to integrate these parts, considerable trouble results. But it depends on the strength of the ego and of the part which protects the good object whether this way of splitting is lasting.
I think it is one of the signs of the strength of character to be able to overcome the part of oneself which would want to make life easier by not standing up for causes and not meeting with difficulties. In everybody there is a part which would be drawn towards this easier way.
A certain amount of splitting is part of mental health. It means giving predominance to that part of oneself which one feels to be good.

The deeply split off figures do not want to allow themselves to be repressed. One gets rid as it were of parts of one’s objects. You cannot push away one part of yourself because it will make itself heard. Splitting oneself is a sin – the schizophrenic feels guilty about it. It is impossible to split off a bad cruel part without splitting off something else as well. You cannot find yourself if you have split off part of yourself – even if it was the bad part.
The dead people in mother earth want to be heard. They are part of oneself.

A particular aspect of the identification with and a deep understanding of, another person can be seen in the fact that couples who have lived for a long time happily together become extremely like each other. The Greek legend that originally man and woman were one, were split off from one another and then driven to find one another, as a foundation for love towards the other sex, can be considered from this angle (cf. Ferenczi). Another presentation of the same process can be seen in the story of Eve created out of a rib of Adam’s. The greatest gift according to Ovid which the Gods could give to Philemon and Gaucis was to make them grow together into one tree. This is an instance of strong but successful projective identification.
This partly goes with the twin material. It is partly a mitigating factor: putting out living part and taking it in again (Adam and Eve). This is part of development. The good breast is not sufficient. It must be reinforced by getting something into themselves which reinforces the good part of themselves.
One part of loneliness is that one can never sufficiently reinforce the good part of oneself. Giving love, etc, as a mitigating factor.

Archivist news - and Klein on ‘first interviews’

Appointment of New Archivist
Alongside another valuable find from the archive, I want to announce to readers of the blog that I am stepping down as archivist with the Melanie Klein Trust. I will be leaving this – always absorbing – work in the very able hands of Christine English. Besides being an adult, child and adolescent psychoanalyst, Christine has been Programme Tutor at UCL for almost a decade, working with MSC students in Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies. I think her background in both clinical and academic  work suits her particularly well for this role – indeed, she has already delved into the archive for her study of ‘Mr B’, which I hope will be published before long. ‘Mr B’ makes an important appearance in Klein’s 1940 ‘Mourning’ paper (in which he is called ‘D’), but he is also notable for the huge quantity of process notes that Klein made about him, and which can be found in the archive. He is also referred to in my post below, as you will see.
Christine and I will have a handover period of a few months, and I will post one or two more archive discoveries here during this time.
Now, to the material…
Melanie Klein on ‘first interviews’
At the beginning of the 34-page file PP/KLE/D.11 (digital images 1-4) I found some material on ‘first interviews’ – what we also call first consultations. These are initial meetings to establish what a patient is seeking and needing in an analysis. With reference to two cases, Klein illustrates beautifully the importance of the ‘first interview’. She describes a prospective patient coming to her for help with his difficulties committing in relationships, and shows how she assumed a highly active stance in the consultation, in order to give the analysis a chance of starting at all. She compares such meetings with those that simply act as an opportunity to arrange the practical details of a new analysis.
The style of Klein’s writing in these pages suggests that she was making notes following a teaching seminar, for future reference (and possible writing up). Although the text is undated, the fact that she mentions a patient who thinks that he will wait for help ‘until the war is over’, indicates that it belongs to the period of the Second World War.

I also enlarged on the first hours with B [see Steiner, 2017, pp. 44-45, on Klein’s account of this meeting with Mr B], gave an instance of the first hour with the writer who said that he became interested in analysis through publications on literary matters, but during the interview he told me things about himself which showed him to be quite an ill man. He became more and more uncertain whether he would really wish to be analysed, and said that of course he has no particular reasons to do so, but he had mentioned in the course of the interview that he had one difficulty and that was that he could never decide on anything which was really important for him and so on. I took up this point when I saw that he would not decide to be analysed, and pointed out that this difficulty of his might prevent him from starting on the analysis. Analysis might help him overcome this difficulty, but to help him he would have to make a start. He seemed very interested in that and thanked me and went, but never started his analysis.
Similar situation with the scientist B [the letter ‘B’ seems coincidental, as the description does not match the ‘Mr B’ mentioned earlier]. He came only, as he said, because of difficulties with his wife, his marriage happiness had gone wrong, and he was inclined to think it could not only be his wife’s fault. He told a detail about his behaviour which could have made things worse, and during the interview he became more and more anxious, and when it came to arranging times and so on he expressed surprise that it should be five times a week. He had thought only once a week, and he just could not manage that, so he would have to wait until the war was over.
(I pointed out to him that he had mentioned as one of his difficulties, which he then entered into, the disturbance of his relation with his wife, his fear of emotional ties, his incapacity to have any tie, and that this fear seems to enter already into his attitude towards starting analysis, which he might be afraid might become a tie to him. Also he was aware of his capacity to escape from such situations fairly easily in various ways.) He was impressed by that and said he would try and start his analysis. He made arrangements, and although the desire to stop the analysis and the danger of breaking off was quite strong for some months, his analysis went on until the time when external necessity made him leave it – he had to go to some other place. Even then he himself expressed some suspicion as to what he could have done to arrange this, but this was analysed, and there was the fact that there was a definite necessity for him to go. He had only had 10 months analysis, which have however benefitted him a good deal.
These first interviews in which analytic understanding and even some kind of interpretation can be used, or should be used, are in contrast to first interviews in which, if everything is decided, as it is in some cases, I do hardly anything else but arrange times and fees. I leave all material for the first analytic hour. If patient wants to speak about it, I let him, but I do not encourage it. [Blank space here; some words missing] do prejudice and to some extent disturb the analytic work.
Great care should be exercised in these first interviews – also with people who are going to be sent to another person. That is often made very difficult for the analyst.

Klein’s comments on John Bowlby’s idea of ‘affectionless characters’

My latest find in the Melanie Klein archive consists of three typed pages of comments and notes on the work of John Bowlby (they constitute the whole of file PP/KLE/D.28, reproduced below). These pages are interesting in a number of ways, not least because I can’t recall another instance of Klein writing about Bowlby, the pioneer of attachment theory. Here, she discusses early separation – a topic emphasised by Bowlby – and depression, in relation to his psychopathological category of ‘affectionless characters’. 
She follows her points concerning Bowlby with a short account of a sad clinical case of her own, namely a boy she had helped, briefly, many years earlier. She appears to have been enlisted by a school to help a child displaying very difficult behaviour, but then to have been forced to subject the child to an unwanted separation when the analysis was stopped.
None of this material is dated, but she makes reference to, ‘a delinquent case I treated 24 years ago. He was one of my first cases.’ This is clearly the unnamed 12-year-old delinquent child referred to in her 1927 paper, ‘Criminal tendencies in normal children’ (Klein 1927, pp. 181-185). She does not mention in that paper exactly when she had treated him, but since she describes him here as an early case, it was likely to have been during the early 1920s, thus dating this file, D.28, to the mid-1940s. 
This fragment of text may have originally been prepared for a meeting of the British Psychoanalytical Society, or perhaps a conference at which a paper of Bowlby’s was to be discussed; Klein was possibly working out her discussion points in advance. Bowlby’s most famous work on childhood delinquency was his 1944 paper, ‘Forty–Four Juvenile Thieves’. However, as D.28 seems to have been written slightly later than this, the discussion may refer to another paper that he gave on a similar theme, which Klein attended.
Bowlby was influenced by Klein and had supervision from her during his analytic training, but his thinking later evolved in a different direction from hers. His work gave rise to attachment theory, and he was intensely concerned with environmental influences on the child, particularly maternal deprivation. His approach is more phenomenological than that of Klein, who remained more focused on the internal world. 
Klein’s interest in the environment, in contrast to Bowlby’s, centred on the way in which it interacted with internal phantasy in the construction of the internal object world. These differing perspectives unfortunately gave rise to controversy between followers of Bowlby and Klein during their lifetimes. Today it is far easier for us to see their work as complementary, and as equally important in different ways. The material in D.28 suggests, quite clearly to me, Klein’s respect for Bowlby, and her wish to engage seriously with his ideas.

Re Dr Bowlby’s Papers
1) Define his view about the early separation from the mother as characteristic for delinquency and the foremost cause.
2) This is a very interesting point. Since early separation also leads to other developments, like depression etc, it would be interesting to study the reasons why in particular cases it leads to these different outcomes.
3) Classification. It appears that the various categories are closely related to depression (except the schizoid). For if we consider the conclusions to the study of the “affectionless character” there would be very little doubt that in Dr B’s view it is an expression of a powerful defence against depression and would therefore fall under a development predominately under the influence of the manic defence.
4) The importance of early depression in all these failures of development. I would repeat something I have often suggested, that the early fundamental ways of dealing with infantile depression have an important bearing on the particular nature of the neurosis or psychosis which might develop. On the other hand, if the infantile depression is successfully dealt with at an early stage, the foundation is laid for normal development.
5) There are many thoughts which are stimulated by this paper, but I just wish to raise one more point. The connection between depression and stealing. Dr B has suggested various connections but one which seems very fundamental and can be traced in, I would have thought, all depressive cases is that the destruction and death of the internal object, including the fear of death of the subject, reinforces the need for taking the good object in, and that in this connection the fantasies of depressives can become very violent and may easily attach themselves to stealing or breaking open of an object.
In this connection I would like shortly to mention a delinquent case I treated 24 years ago. He was one of my first cases, and looking back I see what a well of information he could have been, had I understood more. But even so I learnt a great deal from him.
The analysis lasted about three months. His age was about twelve. The parents [were] both dead. From one foster home to another. Sent to me by school authorities because of breaking open of school cupboard, and sexual attacks on little girls. One could describe him as schizoid. No emotions apparent. Apparently no way of finding any access to him. A mechanical repetition of slogan “lies don’t do any good” etc, without any feeling of conviction of his own. Nevertheless a transference was established. I learnt from him important facts: He had been forced into sexual relations by a much older sister whom he also hated because she had been bad to the mother and had neglected her during the mother’s severe illness. It appears that the boy had taken care of the mother, and after her death could not be found until it was discovered that he had locked himself in with the body of the mother. During the short analysis (checked by the school authorities who would not let him come anymore when he improved) he had begun to develop an interest in being a locksmith – in contrast to breaking into cupboards. In the course of the analysis he did develop an emotional attitude towards myself and emotions generally came to the fore. There seems little doubt that his breaking open the cupboards had to do with the necessity to get hold of something good to replace the mother. Also with his guilt about greedy attacks on the mother in the past. I am not sure what happened to him later on. He would have represented the type of “affectionless character” delinquent referred to by Dr B. Therefore I think it is of interest to see the specific connection to depression found in this case.

Klein and the ‘practical infant’: Some thoughts on child-rearing

There is evidence, in the form of unpublished notes from later in her life, that Melanie Klein intended to write what she referred to as an ‘infant book’. It seems that she envisaged a book containing both theoretical and ‘practical’ sections, with the latter offering psychoanalytically based advice on child rearing. Archive files PP/KLE/D.27 and D.29 provide evidence of her work on this project, though it never reached completion.
D.29 is a large, mixed file, containing 105 pages, mostly typed. (I will refer to image numbers in this article rather than pages or sheets, as I am working with the digitised archive on wellcomelibrary.org.) The file begins with some interesting material on the theory of countertransference dating from 1953, which Bob Hinshelwood (2008, 2020) has already published. There are then several pages entitled ‘Notes on Envy’. What follows, from image 17 onwards, is a very loosely arranged assortment of miscellaneous notes, such as letters about household matters (some dated to the 1940s) and pages of crossed-out material. 
However, on examining the file, a theme does broadly, if imperfectly, emerge: Klein’s thinking about infancy. This encompasses clinical and observational material, theoretical work, and opinions about child rearing. Most of these pages are not dated, although some concern the observation of an infant in January 1944. We can assume that the whole file dates from the latter stages of Klein’s life. The infant material starts with Klein’s note to herself (image 17): ‘File under early development’. Image 22 is headed, ‘Note for “early development” or Infant Book’. Image 44 is headed, ‘book on infant’ and, ‘To practical infant (or infant book)’. Several more items in the file refer to this planned ‘infant book’, and suggest that Klein was fully intending to develop such a project; indeed, was perhaps in its very early stages. It seems – sadly for us – that her plan never came to fruition, as none of her later published works fit these descriptions.
The digitised file D.27 consists of 39 images, again quite a mixture, and also containing references to the ‘infant book’. There are references in this file to a series of lectures on children that Klein was giving at the time. A partial date on a blank piece of notepaper suggests that the material in this file might be from the 1930s, and therefore that the ‘infant book’ was possibly an idea that Klein worked on over many years.
Many of the theoretical observations in these files are familiar from Klein’s published work, but I want here to pick out some ‘practical’ comments relating to child rearing. In the course of her lifetime, as today, approaches to parenting oscillated between the very permissive, where the child was allowed absolute ‘free expression’ without control or censure, to the extremely severe, almost loveless regime advocated by the likes of Truby King. Klein’s writing shows her espousal of a warm, kind approach to raising children, but also a concern that a complete lack of parental boundaries increases persecutory and depressive anxieties in children. This attitude, balancing the needs of children and the anxieties of their parents, comes across particularly clearly in her papers for lay audiences. One of these, ‘Our adult world and its roots in infancy’ was published in 1959, but four others are appearing in print for the first time, in my new book, Essential Readings from the Melanie Klein Archives: Original Papers and Critical Reflections.
In future research I may well find more references to the never-realised ‘infant book’, and will write about this again if so. For now, the following are some examples of Klein’s nuanced and compassionate thinking about child rearing, as found in files D.27 and D.29. (My comments and annotations appear in square brackets.)

In recent years there has been a tendency in certain quarters among those who advise mothers and nurses how to treat young children, to take an extremely Spartan attitude and to deprecate the natural expressions of affection, in caresses and tender tones. A fashion of never allowing any bodily signs of love, even with infants and quite young children, has grown up and become quite authoritative. Now whilst bodily caresses can certainly be very much overdone, especially with the growing boy and girl, yet if the mother never permits herself or gives her child any of these natural satisfactions, there may be a serious loss, not only to the child’s happiness, but to his future development. He feels it as a loss of love, and it may lessen his own capacity for love.

There is nothing on earth which adults can bear so badly as the child’s depression. And yet one has to allow for that to some extent. Having said that the real cure comes from gaining a more realistic picture etc, one should not inflict on the child unnecessary sorrow or frustration.

An illuminating instance for the ways in which steps in development interact with the vicissitudes of anxiety can be found in the process of acquiring cleanliness. Habit training intensifies persecutory and depressive anxieties, particularly from oral, urethral and anal sources. The methods which the ego evolves at this stage are obsessional mechanisms which enter into every aspect of the child’s development. The influence exerted by the environment converges with the inner needs of the child (1)

The part the mother or nurse plays affects essentially the child’s ability to deal with his anxiety relating to the internal danger situations. When the attitude is friendly and encouraging, and not too much force is being used, it becomes a vital source of reassurance. Harm is done by forceful handling of such a situation – which has the opposite effect.

In a very adult and mature patient, one of the things on which she concentrated my not being friendly was that I did not say “goodbye” when she left me. This went back to the “bye-byes” when you go to sleep. We came to find that it was so much depression and fear of finding me altered… the good night situation in childhood. “Bye bye” and gestures of goodbye. Why does this gesture mean so much? You leave your hand behind. Movement of waving, back and forth… A little obsessional element in the repetition of “back soon” which brings reassurance and means security. Your object and situation do not change. They come back. (Use this in practical infant paper).
About breast feeding. Instances where it goes wrong. The unconscious meaning of the breast and what it can be replaced by. Mothers hand and voice, the situation of love and comfort. Important practical conclusion – do not feed the anxiety of the mother at the expense of the child. Great anxiety in the mother, and the drive to go on with breast feeding longer. Questionable if a small amount of mother’s milk, combined with difficulty.
[It is striking here that Klein, although she frequently emphasises the importance of the breast, wants the mother not to feel too persecuted, but to give up breastfeeding if it becomes too difficult to sustain.]

New book – ‘Essential Readings from the Melanie Klein Archives’

After several years’ delving through the Melanie Klein archive at the Wellcome Library, and working with other researchers doing the same, I have edited and contributed to a book of critical reflections on this rich store. It is scheduled for publication by Routledge at the end of February (you can order a copy here!).
Although I missed the opportunity to do this in the book itself, I would here like to dedicate it to the memory of Dr Elizabeth Bott Spillius (1924-2016), a distinguished psychoanalyst who did so much to explore the Klein archives, and to open them up for future generations.
In the first section of the book, ‘In Klein’s own words’, I am particularly pleased to be publishing four of Klein’s ‘lay’ lectures for the first time. These were given to educationalists and child guidance workers at conferences in the 1930s. While the style of her academic and clinical papers can sometimes be rather dense, Klein is always clear and lively in the lectures she wrote for non-analytically trained audiences. These four are no exception. We see her here at the height of her creative powers, while she was evolving her central ideas of the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions. She offers some lovely clinical examples – often taken from her work with children – and expounds her ideas as they apply to ‘the difficult child’, children having problems at school, or those attending child guidance clinics. She also describes the fundamentals of her play technique and, among other things, her interesting disagreements with her contemporary, the paediatrician and educator Maria Montessori. Importantly, Klein’s lectures illustrate how her work differs from traditional non-interpretive ‘play therapy’.
The first part of the book also reproduces Klein’s autobiography in its most complete form (it was left unfinished at the time of her death in 1960). Until now, this version has appeared only on the Melanie Klein Trust website, after it was discovered by chance in analyst Roger Money-Kyrle’s archive. Alongside the autobiography is a recently unearthed letter from 1955, written by Klein to fellow analyst Elliott Jaques. Written after a conference at which Klein was warmly received (somewhat to her surprise), she movingly expresses to her colleague and friend some renewed optimism about the survival of her ideas.
The second half of the book, ‘Studies from the Melanie Klein archive’ contains papers based on studies of the archive by four Klein scholars. Claudia Frank’s three papers were previously only available in German and have been translated into English for this book; four other papers (three by Robert Hinshelwood and one by me) have appeared in various journals. The final paper is the result of an exciting piece of research carried out by Maria Rhode, commissioned especially for this publication.
Claudia Frank, already well known for her meticulous and illuminating study of Klein’s early work with children in Berlin (Frank, 2000), writes fascinatingly about how, immediately before and during the war years, Klein used her patients’ references to Hitler to understand the interaction between the internal and external world. Frank also explores unpublished material of Klein’s on the topic of reassurance, and her psychoanalytic study of the character Don Juan as he is represented in a play by Obey, which Klein saw in 1934.
Bob Hinshelwood, distinguished for his many contributions to Klein scholarship (Hinshelwood, 1989, 1994 and elsewhere) has contributed three chapters to this collection. They examine Klein’s contribution to the concept of ‘internal objects’, and how this was taken up in the British Psychoanalytical Society; Klein’s rare but important use of the concept of repression; and, finally, Klein’s complex, ambivalent relationship to the clinical usefulness of countertransference, which gained ground in psychoanalytic thinking from the 1950s.
My own chapter looks at the material Klein collected while she was writing her final (posthumously published) paper, ‘On Loneliness’. I found exploring this material both interesting and moving, and hope that my readers will too.
Finally, Maria Rhode, who has written widely on autism from a psychoanalytic perspective (Rhode, 2003, 2004) has studied Klein’s later material relating to ‘Dick’. ‘Dick’ was the small child who formed the basis of Klein’s seminal 1930 paper, ‘The Importance of Symbol Formation in the Development of the Ego’. The archives reveal how Klein continued to see Dick from time to time, at problematic moments in his development, until he was almost an adult. Rhode draws on poignant material showing both the ways in which Dick was able, with analytic help, to succeed in his development, and the considerable difficulties that persisted for him. Rhode places this material within the modern context of psychoanalytic research into the autistic spectrum. These are current ideas to which Klein had no access, yet Rhode shows how, even then, she was noticing things that would only much later be fully conceptualised by analysts like Frances Tustin.
