useless headcanon, inspired by james' "earthy brown turtleneck with what looks to be flared corduroys and chelsea boots" look in the 2018 ws miniseries: popular online shitpost theory (akin to the "birds are surveillance tools" shitpost theory irl) is that james operated under cover as jim henson in the 70s, and the muppets were just an elaborate ruse.

like, i just do not think that mr. barnes, who spent the better part of his teenage years being rigorously trained to kill people, who had THAT era of his life immortalized in in-universe comics, whose image even after he was presumed dead was used for pro-US military propaganda as an example of "patriotic youth"... well, i just don't think it'd sit right with him that adults in the superhero business pretty much just give kids a slap on the wrist and tell them to go home. sure, kids are gonna do what they wanna do, but it really doesn't help when so many kids look up to an idealized version of what in all reality was a traumatic experience. equally unhelpful when adult superheroes "team up" with kids.
#i've said it before in other places but james' narrative really only makes any kind of sense if you thing america is inherently good#from a psychological standpoint and from just a basic understanding of How People Work... it makes no sense.#(leans in close to the mic) he exists as in-universe propaganda and real life propaganda.#.07 : EAT LEAD !
