Reader: The show did indeed disappoint me.

In retrospect, all the Diamond Dogs disappointed me because not one of them spelled out to Nate that Keeley being kissed without consent = sexual assault. And then it was forgotten.

Nate kissed a woman against her will in a committed relationship, someone who she trusted as a friend. Someone whose boyfriend trusted him as a friend. And people wonder why S3 disappointed me so much…

The show really dropped the ball here on toxic masculinity which was supposed to be a theme. The irony was between seasons we had that whole issue of the Spanish official kissing the woman footballer. He was finally disciplined by being banned for three years.

Nate’s “Kiss”

I know so many people are angry with Nate about Ted and justifiably so, but I don’t think enough people get how truly awful his assault on Keeley was.

When he “kissed” Keeley, some people (and the show) seemed to move on from it because Keeley was understanding, Nate was embarrassed and then Keeley played it down to Roy.

Many people (me included) didn’t like how that played out because it seemed to focus on Nate and Roy. I also wanted Roy to react more, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt here because he followed Keeley’s lead and she dismissed it as a “little misunderstanding”. He trusts her and he has a soft spot for Nate.

So next season, I REALLY want Keeley and Roy to grasp that Nate wasn’t just being an awkward nerd who didn’t understand cues when he kissed/assaulted Keeley, but it was his egotistical side coming out. His sense of entitlement was directed towards a person - not a suit or a job or some other inanimate object. He felt he “deserved” Keeley in that moment as if she was some kind of prize, as if she WAS inanimate.

As if he was saying in his mind: Roy’s got a black suit, I want a black suit. Roy has “a” Keeley, I want “a” Keeley.

It is so demeaning!!!

It goes along with his sexist comments over the course of the series, and it’s probably the area where I’m most afraid that the show will disappoint me.

This is why I loved Roy with Keeley. He was always respectful of boundaries and her sexuality. He always gave her agency. He also expected accountability - at least in S1 (he gave her a pass in S2 about her talking about him to others.).

I think his respectful behaviour to her was all so purposeful. So S3? When he asks who her video was for? When he tells Jamie he had sex with her a month prior? THAT WAS NOT ROY KENT. I will die on this hill. It’s been almost a year and I’m still not over it.

Rewatching season 2 of Ted Lasso, and I really loved how they play the "Keeley is turned on by vulnerability" subplot in episode 2. Obviously, the whole thing is great, with her masturbating to the press conference where Roy announced his retirement and broke down crying. (Side note: there's zero drama over the fact that she still masturbates while being in a happy relationship, you love to see it.) I love learning that Roy's kink is people doing it in the woods--"Because I could never be that free!" And the resolution, with Roy having Keeley put in her headphones to play the video while he goes down on her, is *chef's kiss*.

But what really stuck out to me this time is how they play the scene where Roy discovers that this is Keeley's kink. When he walks in on her masturbating, she panics and throws her phone across the room. And Roy picks it up, walks across the room, and hands it back to her, asking, "Show me."

You could play a similar storyline on dozens of shows, and all of them would have the SO looking at the video without permission, probably over their partner's protests. In a lot of them, the phone would probably still be in their partner's hand and the SO would get in their space and take it from them.

Hell, in a different context, this very show does something similar: Isaac discovers that Colin is gay when he takes Colin's phone, insisting that he's not kidding about everyone on the team deleting their saved nudes to protect against leaks.

But in episode 2, Keeley doesn't even have her phone. She threw it. It's across the room, and there's no way she could keep Roy from looking at it if he was determined enough. But he doesn't look without her permission. He's curious, sure, and he may be anticipating teasing her about it a bit, but he also points out, "I should know what gets you going." He gives it back to her, asks to see what she was looking at, and then lets her decide whether or not she's going to show him.

Such a small shift in how you'd normally see this kind of scene play out, but the difference is huge.

I’m going to say something likely unpopular on Tumblr but it’s a different perspective.

I always knew Keeley was bi based on S1. No issue and not surprised. (Oh look let’s have the former Page 3 girl/WAG be bi… can you say acceptable to the male gaze?)

I WAS icked out by the dog breeder b/c i know what it’s like. I had it happen to me by someone I thought was charming & cute did it to me many years ago & even in that case I was icked out. I get that Keeley didn’t seem to be but I found it awkward b/c the way the woman did it WAS too presumptuous. But I thought it was part of a series of events in S2 that hinted at her arc for S3.

I had hoped Keeley would realize she had boundary issues, because of several other instances in S2. 1) Not being able to admit to Roy she needed space until she told everyone else & then exploded on him 2) Her simple acceptance of Jamie’s self-absorbed love confession (not awful but thoughtless - I would hate for an ex to do that to me in that circumstance) and worst of all 3) Nate kissing her against her will & Keeley making HIM feel better.

So then the awkward hand-kiss happened. All this led me to believe S3 would be about Keeley setting boundaries for herself so you can imagine how frustrated I was when she entered a relationship with her employer.

S1 Keeley was direct and honest when people disappointed her (Jamie, Rebecca & even Roy). Somewhere along the line she lost that. S3 really was a let-down in terms of telling Keeley’s story.

all this glaad award discourse is giving me horror flashbacks to s2 when ppl were writing multi-paragraph thinkpieces on why the dog breeder coming onto Keeley was queerbaiting but also homophobic bc Keeley 'wasn't confirmed to be bi' & the interaction portrayed wlw as 'predatory.' first of all I cannot fathom how they could've been any more clear than "dip my toes back into the lady pool' back in S1 and if you didn't know Keeley was confirmed bi this whole time that's a skill issue. second of all god forbid hot women flirt with each other!
