Do you have a weakness for tiles like me? I can't get enough of these Peranakan tiles in Singapore! • "Art Nouveau’s Majolica Tiles & Pattern Floor Tiles were used in the latter half of the Victorian era in thousands of suburban houses across the British Isles, with designs predominately based on floral motifs. Later, when tiles grew in popularity among the Chinese communities in South East Asia, auspicious Chinese elements were introduced into the motifs. These included the fish, crane, bat, lion, peacock and qilin. Fruit motifs such as the peach, grape, pomegranate and pineapple were widely used in commercial shop houses and Peranakan's Homes. Which today they are commonly known as “Peranakan Tiles & Pattern Floor Tiles." (at Duxton Hill)

Sundays are for walks around Emerald Hill and admiring pretty shophouses. • A shophouse is a vernacular architectural building type that is commonly seen in areas such as urban Southeast Asia. Traditionally shophouses used to be two or three stories high, with a shop on the ground floor for mercantile activity and a residence above the shop. This mixed-use building form characterises the historical centres of most towns and cities in the Southeast Asia region. (at Emerald Hill, Singapore)

I love the versatility of this pattern! Scroll to the right to see the entire range of the classic Boho print and a typical example of a shophouse (inspiration behind the design and the colour palette). • The Singapura collection celebrates the rich Peranakan heritage and the present-day cultural diversity of Singapore in the form of beautiful, contemporary gift wares and stationery. I love Peranakan food. So I though why not share a little bit about it here. • Peranakans, descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in Penang, Malacca, Singapore and Indonesia inter-marrying with local Malays and combines Chinese, Malay and other influences. • Nonya cooking is the result of blending Chinese ingredients with various distinct spices and cooking techniques used by the Malay/Indonesian community. This gives rise to Peranakan interpretations of Malay/Indonesian food that is similarly tangy, aromatic, spicy and herbal. In other instances, the Peranakans have adopted Malay cuisine as part of their taste palate. • regram from my absolute favourite place for Nonya food, non other than @violetoonsingapore (at Asia/Singapore)

I only had a head full of dreams... After moving back to Singapore I was constantly on the look out for that quintessential brand that celebrated the Peranakan heritage of this beautiful island. And couldn't really find anything that was sophisticated and thoughtful and done with great attention to detail. And that's how Kala Pata came about. This is my Persian diva and on the screen wip of the Singapura collection — those are Nonya porcelain ware inspired prints which later became greeting cards, notebooks, iphone cases etc. Us creative types are always our harshest critics but sometimes it is great to take a little moment to reflect on how far you have come. To give yourself a tap on the back for all the challenges and battles you have fought to keep your little business going. All the doors that you've knocked on and all the rejections but that one little nudge, one kind comment or one customers feedback kept you going. Here's to us! Never stop believing in your dreams ⭐️❤⭐️❤ (at Asia/Singapore)
