Watched the USA v Columbia game.. can everyone please now apologise for giving Ireland shit for abandoning their game before the world cup when one of our players was sent to hospital!
When I said the thorns was a questionable decision for me I never meant that the nwsl was in any way an inferior league to Europeās. And I can understand why Jessie decided to go there. Plus she hasnāt played there before so itās an opportunity to try a new league. But I still believe that playing in Europe gives you the opportunity to play against a lot more different styles of football even within the same league and you face more players that will take part in world cups and other international tournaments. And in my mind Jessie starts regularly in any top team in Europe except maybe 3-4 clubs. But again nwsl is a very competitive league with a lot of investment at the moment. The only thing I really donāt like about the league is their calendar.
Yeah I think itāll be a really good opportunity for her honestly. Itās hard to know what wouldāve happened if she went to another european club. I think sheād get more game time than at Chelsea but depending on where she went itās hard to know if she started all the time.
Something about Sinc being there for so long and now Jessie going there feels right tbh
If top players choose āspecific teamsā in Europe they are indeed choosing Europe. Cause those teams are in Europe. That said Iām pretty fed up with the debate of Europe vs USA. I think we can expect to see good players to sign also in the NWSL. Europe does not need a monopoly on top players like it has been on the menās side, and neither does the US for that matter. We both need to accept eachotherās existance and be happy there is more than one good league.
We donāt need to insult or complain about eachotherās systems or leagues all the time either. The differences are there and are culturally important, each country can do what they see fit and in accordance with their sporting traditions. Iām not telling the US league to change its ways and I donāt want to be told European leagues should change into the US system either.
Yeah exactly thereās going to be world class players in every league. Thats just how football works. I actually think itās good for players to play in Europe and in the NWSL in their career because the style of play is so different. I think for a player to excel in both regions requires such a wide skill set.
I agree with you. Theyāre both different. I enjoy watching both. There are things I dislike about both. I think the NWSL has made some good changes like free agency. But you have to take each league as it is. You canāt watch the NWSL expecting the play to be the same as Europe and vice versa because itās not.
I think it's incorrect to say top talent is choosing Europe. Top talented players are choosing VERY specific teams in Europe, if none of those teams were the right fit for Jessie then the nwsl is a great choice. She will be in a very competitive environment and will have the chance to step up and be one of the best players on a team, an experience that she has not had at Chelsea. Which means she can add confidence and more dimensions to her playing. It seems like an excellent choice to me and I hate the Thorns. I also think it is clear that US and Canadian players prefer the NWSL to Europe when it comes to long term contracts, and the rise of European women's football has not made a massive impact on that. The difference between leagues does not seem to be big enough from the players perspective to commit to life on another continent. So it should not be shocking to see players from North and South America choose to return to NWSL or Liga F after stints in Europe.
Yep have to agree which is why I think thatās a good choice for Flemings because like I said if she goes to another big team she risks not getting the playing time she wants and sheās too good to be spending her time on the bench. Completely agree with your points.
I think Jessie made the right decision to leave (even though it hurts me a lot as both a fan of her and Chelsea ššā¦ end of an era). I didnāt see her becoming a regular starter for us even with a new manager coming in who would reevaluate everyone. Not that she doesnāt have the talent to do that but it just didnāt seem to work out and she seemed to struggle with the physicality of the league. She clearly wants to play more so she did the right thing and itās good for Chelsea too because an international spot opened up right when we needed it with Samās injury. Iām not happy about thorns though. Obviously she has her reasons but at a time where the top talents are choosing European football for her to go to nwsl is a bit questionable for me. But I hope she proves me wrong and remains a top player for her club and Canada.
I agree its 100% the best thing for her. A player like her doesnāt deserve to be on the bench and sheāll start at most other teams. Kinda similar to how I felt when Beth left.
I feel like the Thorns might be a great place for her tbh. I think sheāll do well there! I think if she went to another top wsl team she may have found herself in the same position.
