Ah, Lestrade. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for him, and it only got bigger with the recent reread.

you've inspired me to finally learn to draw backgrounds/scenes, thank you for all the wonderful art, i hope you have a good new year :)

Thank you so much!! That is such a kind thing to say, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your words — particularly because I feel like I still have a lot to learn in that arena myself.

In my experience, the great news about backgrounds is: almost everything that makes up a background is a LOT easier to draw than a human person. So, if you already have some familiarity with drawing a person, I promise that with a little bit of practice, constructing backgrounds will be easier than that.

The flip side is you have to learn perspective, especially if you want to draw man-made environments. But don't be intimidated if you're just starting out on that journey! It's a lot less complicated than it seems, and even learning only the absolute basics will get you a long, long way. All it takes is practice 💪

A few resources that have been particularly useful to me is Thomas Romain's notes on perspective and Steve Lieber's explanation of Andrew Loomis's trick for "hanging" figures on a horizon line.

Aw, thank you so very much. I'm so glad that you've enjoyed them! The first two entries in that series are still some of my own favorite work of the last few years — the last photo of David, especially. And the poker match with Nightingale — that's the only picture I've done that to me really matched the image of him I get in my head while reading Rivers of London.
