I draw in a big sketchbook, but people always seem surprised at the scale of my drawings. Anyway here's a photograph of the real, frankensteined-together piece. When you're a traditional artist you don't have photoshop layers, so you have to make do with cut-out paper layers, haha
Pen for scale. Probably my biggest pen-and-ink only piece.
It has long been clear that Sam (usually) wins (almost) any poll he's in - unless Bill the Pony is an option. In fact, Bill the Pony is so popular that he was previously voted the "real" hero of Lord of the Rings!
So alright, fine. Let's see how they do head to head. Sam dispatched both Elrond and Pippin with ease, but will he find a more difficult opponent in the Battle of Bywater's most notable participant? Or will Bill "turn tail and dash away" as he did at the entrance to Moria, fleeing from the Watcher's tentacles? Only time (and the results of this poll) will tell!
My BIGGEST pet peeve when it comes to Tolkien is how people will sometimes characterize Melkor鈥檚 rebellion as being about him wanting to do his own thing and rebelling against Illuvatar鈥檚 oppressive sheet music.
THERE WAS NO SHEET MUSIC!聽 Illuvatar wasn鈥檛 forcing anything.聽 The Ainulindale was improv.聽 Illuvatar just gave them the theme, the idea, the feeling, the starting point.聽 The Ainur were drawing inspiration from the thought of Illuvatar, sure, and so long as they were in harmony the music played precisely as Illuvatar intended because Illuvatar had created them and knew how they worked together.聽 But the music of the Ainur before Melkor鈥檚 dissonance was quintessentially creative, as well as corroborative.聽 It was spontaneous, perfect harmony of free individuals perfectly in tune with each other, whose improvisations were constantly building upon each other.
Melkor鈥檚 rebellion was not about asserting his freedom of expression, because his expression was already free.聽 Instead it was explicitly about making his own voice louder and more important than anyone else鈥檚, and subjugating the creativity of others to instead convince or force them to follow him exactly in repetitive unison.聽 And so, when Melkor鈥檚 goal became drown everyone else out, instead of make beautiful music together, his music became less creative, less innovative, and less his.
So it kind of annoys me when people talk about Melkor like he鈥檚 all for freedom of expression when he鈥檚 pretty much the opposite of that.
I don鈥檛 get all the Tolkien gender and sexuality discourse鈥攊t鈥檚 clear that the genders according to Tolkien are:
gets trapped in a very high (or potentially very low) place, gets rescued, loses part of or entire hand
finds loved one who is trapped in very high (or potentially very low) place by singing and their beloved sings back; rescues them despite the impossible odds against this
person singing, dancing, or just kinda vibing in the woods
person who comes to the woods from elsewhere, sees the singer/dancer/viber, and falls in love instantly
everyone else
鈥nd an ideal relationship, romantic, sexual and/or otherwise, is between genders 1 and 2 or 3 and 4. Genders CAN overlap.
