My take on Kaz over the years for a new project I started :>
Some notes:
- He was a bit of a late bloomer. Puberty hit him late and mostly all at once when he was 15/16.
- Before 15 he was basically a walking twig (but stronger than he looked)
- 10-13 he maintained a buzzcut in an attempt to make himself look more intimidating.
- He used to be more tan back when he lived in the countryside but the Ketterdam lack of sun turned him into the pale demon we know and love today
- Man's got super fluffy hair actually

but allow me to present
The Crows in an escape room:
Kaz is the person who figures everything out immediately but won't say anything to anyone (they think it's because he's being a dick but really he's too smart for his own good and doesn't want to ruin the experience for the others by escaping in 10 minutes and doing everything himself), or he'll solve something while no one is looking and just go "oh wow look this just opened all by itself how crazy you should do something about that"
Inej and Matthias are calmly solving the clues and methodically writing things down, though Matthias gets frustrated early on, but he hides it well. Inej isn't as invested, she's just there to have fun with her friends and exercise her brain
Wylan is extremely invested. he wants to escape and starts getting flustered almost immediately and is more frustrated than Matthias and way worse at hiding it
Jesper and Nina are playing with the props, having conversations and making jokes. they both start screaming and jumping around excitedly any time the group solves something, even if they did nothing to contribute.
Nina is the person who keeps saying "come on guys we have to focus" and then immediately gets distracted with something that looks dick shaped and won't stop making jokes about it.
Jesper will be paying zero attention to the room and then take one look at something and solve it immediately and go right back to being silly
Kuwei is the one who looses all hope after five minutes and won't stop saying "we're all gonna die" and cannot be convinced otherwise. he doesn't do much to help just kinda sits there being a downer

I've seen a lot of people say how hilarious it is that the Crows feel like they can trust Kaz with their wildest secrets because he's probably seen an done worse, and I fully agree...which is such an extra L for the guy Kaz dropped off the building lmao
It's like...
Nina: "I've falsely accused my crush of being a slaver"
Kaz, wiping the blood off his gloves after he literally just ripped a man's eye out: "Haha nice."
Jesper: "I have so many debts that my father might lose the farm"
Kaz: "I beat a man to death with his own bone once."
Wylan: "I can't read :("
Kaz: "Then?? Hire someone who can?? I can't walk properly, was I NOT supposed to get a cane I can bust peoples' kneecaps with??"
Inej: "I KILLED someone!"
Kaz: "LOL, tell me about it. Wait why are you crying."
Random asshole: "There's a girl in the Menagerie that will do anything for me because she'll die if I tell on her"
Kaz: "What the fuck is wrong with you"

Jesper's Emotional Awareness
In the books Inej is the heart and emotional center of the Crows, but there's an argument to be made that Jesper fulfills that role in Shadow and Bone.
He has a strong, I don't know what to call it, emotional awareness? It's not that the others, especially in the first season, lack that emotional understanding, they're just more reserved about expressing it to one another. He's right to say, "Nobody in this bloody band of broken dolls can confab worth a damn." He's attuned to each of crows emotional needs and the most open discussing them, letting the others lean on him when necessary. This is just who Jesper is as a very kind, charismatic person who thrives on socializing, but I also think it's partly because the show didn't spend a lot of time dealing with his issues so it made sense for him to be a sounding board for everyone else working through their personal conflicts.
It's apparent in Jesper and Inej's friendship, when he stays and talks with her while she stitches herself up, in the deleted scene where they say goodbye and Inej doesn't even have to finish her sentence -- Jesper reassures her that he'll watch out for Kaz, Jesper going behind Kaz's back to tell Inej about the Shu Han job because it's something he knows she'd want to be involved in.
Jesper immediately notices Kaz's panic attack, the we're brothers conversation Jesper tells Kaz, showing his support to Kaz before he takes down Pekka. Jesper who's the most vocally worried after Kaz blows up the Crow Club and his how his destructive pursuit of vengeance puts all of them at risk.
When Nina and Zoya snap and snarl at each other, it's Jesper who redirects the conversation back to the job.
Then there's Wylan. Despite Jesper's emotional awareness of his friends' needs, he still manages to upset Wylan with the offhanded remark about Wylan not being able to read the name on the passport. Jesper instantly realizes he made a mistake (just by paying attention to Wylan's body language) and attempts to course correct even though he doesn't know why it hurt him. Usually Jesper knows his friends' emotional needs and how he can provide it for them, and I think that's why he's so flustered that he keeps making mistakes and saying the wrong thing, especially to the one person he cares most deeply about.
There's a lot of examples of Jesper reacting to Wylan's emotional needs, but most obvious example of Jesper's emotional awareness towards Wylan is in the deleted Wesper scene. Wylan admits he's never felt at home in Ketterdamn so Jesper takes .02 seconds to make a key and literally gives Wylan a home both physically and emotionally.
The Crows all have unique interpersonal relationships between one another, but I'd argue that Jesper continuously shows the most understanding and supportive actions towards everyone's needs. So I would consider him the heart and emotional center of the group, not because the Crows revolve around him, but because he provides that role for them.
