more hours have passed since the watcher streamer announcement and i shouldn't have gone on twitter because the way people are talking about steven lim is pissing me off. just because you lot like ryan and shane more doesn't mean that y'all can say any damn thing about steven like wtf is this
Tumblr media
REALLY??? a guy who sacrificed his own creative output to take on the financial responsibility for a company with two co-founders who categorically did not want to deal with the money side of things (all things that three of them have confirmed on camera during one of the making watcher episodes) is equivalent to a Yale jackass who cheated on his wife and let down his business partners? y'all have lost the plot.
choosing to limit your own creative projects and getting your hands dirty with the most stressful part of the job -making ends meet for your company and making it survive - so that your other two business partners can make the content they like to their heart's content is the kind of sacrifice that would put most of you in a grave. fuck off.
don't make this a "steven lim is a villain" thing. you're allowed to be upset at the announcement but pinning the anger on steven is unfair and unmerited.

I need a name for him, any suggestions? (I was thinking Sir Pricks-a-lot).

Ok absolutely WILD that someone sent you an ask like that. I had no idea people were still sending cringe death threat esque asks in 2024. Grow up, Jesus Christ. Like listen man I don't agree with your take either, but I'm not going to send a cringey angry ask about it. I'll maybe frown and nod and keep scrolling, keep truckin along. Disagreeing with other people is fine. Like, yikes.
Anyway dude here's a positive ask to clear that shit up. You're wonderful and adored. I've followed this blog since its conception. You're funny and wonderful. I hope you find quarters in the ground instead of pennies forever and ever
It's the fact that I would have absolutely understood if they'd just asked why I said what I said (most of the original post was posted very shortly after watcher's video, like maybe half an hour after they posted it). Some people just fail to understand that this has been a lot of people's special interest for many years. We're all still trying to process it, and afraid to let go of what brought us so much joy (if that makes sense).
As for the second part of this ask, I think my heart just grew three sizes like the Grinch's 😭😭 You're so kind, and this actually really made my day ❤️

Woke up to people being mad at me for saying I'm proud of watcher. Let me clarify: I'm proud of Shane and Ryan for wanting to leave YouTube and set up something for themselves instead.
You can be proud of something, but not agree with the way the way they try to execute it.
Please stop trying to argue with someone when there's literally no need for it.

In the video, the guys at Watcher said people could share accounts. so why are folks are getting so mad about cost when you could literally split the account between 5 people?
I think a big reason for the anger and feelings of betrayal is the fact that they hyped it up as a big exciting announcement for at least a week, hyping us all up, and then the announcement being like
Tumblr media
I was so excited about the announcement, so the disappointment hit me like a truck when it was basically about yet another pay wall for content I adore. To me, it's not even so much the fact that we're going to have to pay for it. It's the way they hyped it up as a big announcement to get us all excited, when they could have just been like 'so, we've been thinking, and we've decided to start a streaming service for watcher'.
Still think 6 bucks is too much for the content they have on offer, though.

Watcher is not removing their backlog of videos from YouTube. What is there will remain. source:
However, according to Bergara, Watcher is not fully exiting YouTube: It will still keep its backlog of videos on YouTube, and going forward will put the first episodes of new seasons on YouTube — while the full new seasons will be exclusively available on the Watcher streamer.

Hey boogers!!! I've gotten a few asks asking for my opinion on the new Watcher streaming service and all that it entails. I want to put together an answer that is well formulated and conveys all my thoughts in an accurate and effective way, and am not able to do so currently because I'm at work, but I'm hoping to make a post about it by the weekend. Sending love to all the folks at Watcher and you remarkable people here on tumblr.com

Maybe it’s been asked/said, but for international fans (which are a big part), it’s not just $6. Exchange rates are a bitch and it’s not “just a coffee”. (And from what I’ve seen international fans aren’t able to sign up? Or am I wrong?)
I did see someone mention that, but I haven't tried it myself (I'm European).

Listen I know folks are very mad but let me be very honest - based off of how much Watcher is basing its website around the Dropout model, the comparisons to Netflix are ridiculous. If Watcher stayed on YouTube, they would not be able to expand their show range or stay independent, and I am frankly mind boggled that people are more willing to get BetterHelp and its predatory ass practices hawked to them then pay a coffee a month for Watcher
I think it's mostly the fact that everything will be behind a pay wall (six bucks for a handful of videos is not cheap), rather than use patreon (which can be highly successful, if done correctly). Six bucks is what you pay for a big assortment of videos. They could have done it differently (like tiers: 3 bucks for the videos, 5 bucks for 10% off merch & the debriefs, 10 bucks for a monthly goodie & exclusive extra videos etc, to name one idea).
As for BetterHelp (fuck BetterHelp, all my friends hate BetterHelp), there are other sponsors they could get.
No idea if I worded all of this right, but I hope it explains just why people are so upset with it.
