The Twisted Yarn
One of the simplest and yet most complex tools in magic is also one of the oldest – and that is the yarn, cord, or string. Whether it is the Gyre-Carling at her wheel, the valkyries at their macabre loom, or the Fates measuring and cutting the strings of men’s lives, the symbolism was all through mythology that later seeped into popular folklore and fairy tales from Rumpelstiltskin to Sleeping Beauty. All of these have elements of magic in them, but a little-known tale from the Brother’s Grimm is an even better example for the witch’s arsenal.

a spell to make a home cozier
here is a little ritual you can do to bring warmth, joy and harmony to a home to make it feel cozier and more welcoming. best done during a full moon, but you can do it any time. you will need:
☾ a small bowl of ceramic, wood or glass
☾ a clove of garlic (bringing warmth + togetherness to a home)
☾ a sprinkle of lavender flowers (tranquility and calm)
☾ a sprig of pine (home blessing, cleansing, grounding)
☾ a brown candle (home and hearth magick)
sit in the main area of your home. light your brown candle; sit comfortably on the floor or couch and meditate on the candle for a while. warm your hands with its flame.
set the offering bowl in front of the candle. take the garlic clove in your hands and visualize the way you want your home to feel: warm, lived-in and welcoming. warm the clove over the candle-flame briefly and set it in the bowl.
take your lavender flowers in your hands. close your eyes, take a deep breath and inhale the scent of them. let it calm you, as it will calm the energy of your home. place the flowers atop the garlic.
lastly, take the sprig of pine. use it like a wand; point it toward all four corners of the room you’re in. place it against your heart, and set it in the bowl.
whisper to the bowl: “may your magick bless this home with kindness and warmth.” blow out the candle; place the bowl on a windowsill, mantle, or coffee table for three nights. on the third night, sprinkle its contents outside your front door.

Apotropaic, ritual or ‘witches’ marks were carved where air, and therefore witches, could enter a building to protect them from such evil spirits. Although common on doorways, they are most likely to be found around fireplaces. I was reading a book about herbal healing and, while reading a section on making tinctures it mentioned trying to extract essential oils and resins... Is what is being extracted actually an EO? I would think that would make for a pretty crappy medicine if there were EOs in it?
Disclaimer, it is stupidly early in the morning and I have not slept. Lol
look, i can call 9:30am stupidly early if i want to, i’m a vampire
Ok, so. Without knowing the specifics of the book you were reading I shall take my best guess.
There are two kinds of essential oils. First there are the essential oils found in plants. When we use plants as medicine, this is often what we’re after. I can’t brain all the science of it because my brain is currently on vacation. But here’s a blog post that deals with all that.
Then, there is the distilled kind that come in the little bottles. This is the kind I yell about a lot because those fucking cultists are gonna kill someone.
Now, where those bottles of EOs come from is by extracting those volatile (essential) oils from the plants. Where a plant might (for example and not actually accurate numbers) might have say… a 0.1% concentration of the volatile oil in a huge handful. The EOs in the bottles is just pure extracted oil.
I don’t think, without some pretty serious equipment, that you can extract the EOs the same as those little bottles at home. And you need… a LOT of the plant to get any significant amount of the oil. However when you’re making medicine at home you are extracting some of the oils. This is why we don’t tend to use a lot of heat in the process. Too hot and you ruin the oil.
So, yes… the process of making a tincture is trying to take the volatile (essential) oil out of the plant and concentrate it a little to make it a more potent medicine than the plant itself. We aren’t talking the hugely concentrated extraction of what is commonly known as essential oils.

The Serpent’s Key
Used to see that which is hidden – aiding in the perception of the Unseen: be it spirits, deities, omens, etc. It might also be employed to find lost or hidden objects, and expose secret truths people are hiding. In addition, it can also be used to reverse the Serpent’s Lock if the key is added.
