Opinion on 15 or 17? Or both 🫢
Questions from here
15. Opinion on Anakin’s characterization discrepancies between Clone Wars and the prequels? [i.e., the broification of Anakin Skywalker]
The short answer to this (from a Watsonian-esque perspective) is that the Clone Wars show is, at its core, a narrative told from Ahsoka's POV. Ahsoka, as Anakin's padawan, has a very rose tinted view of him — he's a hero, he's a charming rogue, he's able to get out of every situation — and of course she does! She's a child, he's his teacher and guide, it's normal to look up to people in those roles in your life when you're young.
In the movies, though, we're seeing Anakin from a removed third person perspective, which is to say we're seeing him as he really is. Ahsoka can't conceptualise Anakin crying from overwhelm, the same way that kids can't conceptualise their parents doing the same. But he does (very prettily, might I add). The 'real' Anakin is awkward, and cries when he's emotional, and is more than just the confident front he puts on for other people.
From a Doylist perspective, I'm just 😩 at Filoni trying to make Anakin "cool" in TCW because he thought he wasn't manly enough or whatever. Spray bottle direct to the face for him.
17. What event is Anakin’s point of no return in his fall to the dark side?
Baby boy is doomed by the narrative before he's even born <3 So his conception I guess 🤣
Putting that aside though, I think it's not when he killed the Tuskens after his mother's death — though that is undoubtedly a Dark act — but when he decides to keep it a secret from Obi-Wan and the rest of the Jedi. He doesn't own up to his actions, which he clearly knows were wrong. It isn't that he keeps it to himself, either! He tells both Padme and Palpatine, both of whom have enormous political power.
But he doesn't tell the Jedi. He decides to let fear — of what the consequences might be, of what Obi-Wan might think of him — rule him. Because how they (he) perceive him is more important to Anakin than atoning for his actions.
And that's not a once-off, Anakin choosing to keep this secret. That's a choice he has to make over and over every day, a fear that hangs over him like a pall — the fear that they'll find out what he's done, the fear that someone will tell them, or someone will sense it, or that he'll somehow give it away.
It's a fear that impacts every single choice he makes from that moment on, and every moment he continues to let that fear rule him, he's giving more and more power to the Dark.

This section was one of my favorites and one of the reasons I fell in love with this novel, because it's such a great example of walking the fine line the Republic was asking of the Jedi and how, through seemingly innocuous but constant requests for the Jedi to step just a little outside their purpose. They're there to help negotiate peaceful resolutions that the people of the galaxy have, whatever that situation might call for. There's unrest in a local strike that might turn dangers, okay, the Jedi can go help negotiate. Oh, no, we just want you to be security because the government is refusing to negotiate. That's not our job. Oh, no, we don't actually mean corporate security, just a quick visit would keep people from getting hurt. Maybe just stage a training mission there, you do that a lot, don't you? Then it's on to, well, you don't want to be rude and refuse this gift and help spread the good works of the Republic, right? You can see how it would help the galaxy to get the word out, yes? You see that it's a death of a thousand cuts situation where the Jedi are desperately trying to maintain their purpose but real lives and real work are being leveraged against them and they're asked again and again and again to do something that would flatten who they are, because those real people do need help. And they do refuse to endorse a product! They do refuse to actually wear the boots! But that's not going to be the end of the requests, this is just one drop in an ocean requests, which the Jedi can't just say, nah, we're going to separate ourselves from the Republic, because the people behind those requests genuinely need help. Maybe not the boots request, but the people of Chamble could certainly use the help. It's putting the Jedi under a tremendous strain--some of the requests are easy to say no to, but they still have to have a conversation about why not and it's like none of that penetrates the people making the requests, because they'll turn around and make the exact same one, please be our police force (we're not police), please be our corporate security (we're not corporate security), please represent our merch deal (we're not influencers). Every. Single. Day. They can't just walk away because then they're also walking away from the people who need them, the good we see them do in this very book, but also we see the constant attempts to chip away at who the Jedi are, despite how hard they work to maintain it and like. That's it, that's the story there! Good people who are still human, who can still be worn down when the galaxy fails to meet them in good faith about who they are and what they actually do.

Obi Wan says that he no longer believes that Anakin can be saved but the MINUTE Anakin says “I made a mistake being evil :/” Obi Wan is right there to whisk him off to the force afterlife.

Yeah, sure, we could be sad about the deaths of so many of their friends and family, we could be sad that Yoda's only company is a ghost who is reminding him of all the dead grandbabies that are no longer with them OR-- I could absolutely lose my shit at how annoying Obi-Wan is EVEN AS A GHOST. LOOK AT HIM HE HAS CLEARLY BEEN BOTHERING YODA FOR AWHILE NOW "YOU'RE STILL HERE?" YODA ASKS WHILE OBI-WAN IS DELIBERATELY LOUNGING AGAINST YODA'S TABLE WITH THE MOST INSUFFERABLE GRIN ON HIS FACE AND THEN FOLLOWS YODA AROUND ON HIS MENTAL HEALTH WALK BOTHERING HIM WITH MEMORIES OF WHEN HE WAS A YOUNGLING AND YODA MADE PASTRIES WHILE BANT HELPED WITH THE FILLING IT'S SO FUCKING CUTE AND HILARIOUS (BECAUSE OBI-WAN IS THE FUNNIEST GHOST IN THIS GALAXY) WE'RE NOT EVEN THINKING ABOUT HOW BANT IS DEAD AND NO MORE JEDI BABIES WILL GET TO HELP YODA MAKE DUMPLING FILLING

The funniest thing about this scene is that there is zero pre-communication about doing this bit, Obi-Wan just 100% flings himself into pretending that Qui-Gon is a notorious sadistic killer, like this horrible gremlin is faking LOOKING SICK at just the THOUGHT of what Qui-Gon might do if someone crossed him and Qui-Gon is playing right along, THESE TWO ARE THE WORST I LOVE THEM. A reminder that Bail Organa, upon seeing the Jedi Temple in flames, immediately flew straight over to investigate himself with no guards and no weapons of his own. And upon being told there was a rebellion by the clone troopers there, he attempted to walk past them and see what was happening himself.
It was only after they aimed blasters at him that Bail leaves with a newfound resolve to stop Palpatine. He didn't wait until Palpatine declared himself Emperor to know he had to do something. He knew he was bad right there.

randomly (or not) still remembering that I hate how The Last Jedi attempted to invoke Taoism so that RJ could pull the entire "lol sith will always come back and so too will a hero it's just the way it is" because it misunderstands both Jedi philosophy and the nature of the Sith and how Taoism views "evil"
like... perhaps I am having an upside-down moment but Lucas actually nailed that (evil coming from giving in to selfish want; thereby going against the natural flow of life in favor of obsessive desires), and now it's just been "well if there are jedi there gotta be sith that's THE RULES!!! balance means BOTH!!" bc ow my brain

i just had an argument about the jedi so now i’m going to rant about how i perceive them
so basically the sith are these evil extremists in the force who harness their hatred and stuff
to me that makes the jedi extremists in the opposite direction. anytime you feel a negative emotion just don’t? and don’t even think about favoring someone, you’ll turn evil immediately!
while i know there is a good reason to have these rules and they’re there from experience it is still very extreme and a lot of things could’ve been done differently.
for example; a child is taught from a young age that they’re not allowed attachment and that their negative emotions can cause them to fall into the dark side. of course they’re still going to feel attached to something one day. how would that child feel? inadequate? defective?
watching dune (part 2) really makes you think about organized religion and how it can be harmful. the jedi are basically a cult.
the argument was about how i don’t think the jedi were these angels they were made out to be and the other person has been brainwashed into thinking that that were.
would i rather be a child soldier who isn’t allowed to fall in love or love a parent figure more than the next guy or live a normal ass life and fall in love (optional) and live happy with the people around me??? 🤔
i feel like we need a middle ground
bc if anakin got that middle ground i’m sure things would’ve been completely different. if obi-wan hadn’t pushed him away and just said ‘i love you’ once i’m sure Anakin wouldn’t have felt like an outcast
but hey, that’s just a theory

Screaming crying throwing up that both Obi-Wan and Ahsoka sliced Vader’s helmet in half to reveal the face of Anakin Skywalker because they are the only ones left alive who can truly cut through the metaphorical shell of Darth Vader and expose the raw core of who he is inside.  Of course it’s those two, they cut Anakin Skywalker open to the bone, and we see that play out through the literal breaking of his mask as only they can, the ones who still love him.  I’m gonna fling myself into the sun.
