OneNote is a Microsoft Office app similar to Evernote or Dropbox Paper, for taking notes and storing information. OneNote lets you create notebooks for different topics, with each notebook. OneNote for Windows 10 OneNote for the web Dictation lets you use speech-to-text to author content in Office with a microphone and reliable internet connection. It's a quick and easy way to create drafts or outlines, capture notes, and comment on notes. Microsoft OneNote is a personal information management app designed to help you take notes of all kinds into one digital notebook. You can organize your notes in any way you want, share them with others, and sync the content across devices, so they're always at your fingertips. But the best thing about OneNote is that it's packed full of features. A OneNote notebook is the main container for notes you capture within the app. It's like a specialized folder, but with its own interface and unique tools. You can put notes anywhere within a notebook, and sync them across your devices. Unfortunately, this simplicity of the notebook doesn't tell you how to use them properly.

The Application interface includes methods help retrieve, manipulate, and update OneNote information and content. The methods are in four general categories:

Notebook Structure methods

The methods described in this section enable you to discover, open, modify, close, and delete OneNote notebooks, section groups, and sections.

GetHierarchy method

Description Gets the notebook node hierarchy structure, starting from the node you specify (all notebooks or a single notebook, section group, or section), and extending downward to all descendants at the level you specify. Syntax HRESULT GetHierarchy( (in)BSTR bstrStartNodeID, (in)HierarchyScope hsScope, (out)BSTR * pbstrHierarchyXmlOut, (in,defaultvalue(xs2013))XMLSchema xsSchema); Parameters bstrStartNodeID – The node (notebook, section group, or section) whose descendants you want. If you pass a null string ('), the method gets all nodes below the root node (that is, all notebooks, section groups, and sections). If you specify a notebook, section group, or section node, the method gets only descendants of that node. hsScope – The lowest descendant node level you want. For example, if you specify pages, the method gets all nodes as far down as the page level. If you specify sections, the method gets only section nodes below the notebook. For more information, see the HierarchyScope enumeration in the Enumerations topic. pbstrHierarchyXmlOut – (Output parameter) A pointer to the string in which you want OneNote to write the XML output. xsSchema – (Optional) The version of the OneNote XML schema, of type XMLSchema, that you want to be output. You can specify whether you want XML Schema version 2013, 2010, 2007, or the current version. NOTE: We recommend specifying a version of OneNote (such as xs2013) instead of using xsCurrent or leaving it blank, because this will allow your add-in to work with future versions of OneNote.

The GetHierarchy method returns a string in OneNote 2013 XML format by default or you can set the preferred XML schema version by using the optional xsSchema parameter.

Depending on the parameters you pass, the GetHierarchy method can return various lists (for example all notebooks, all sections in all notebooks, all pages within a given section, or all pages within a given notebook). For each node, the XML string returned provides properties (for example, the section or page title, ID, and last-modified time).

Not all combinations of start node and scope are valid. For example, if you specify a section start node and a notebook scope, GetHierarchy Notion to todoist. returns a null result because a notebook is higher in the node hierarchy than a section.

The following C# example shows how to use the GetHierarchy method to get the entire OneNote hierarchy, including all notebooks, down to the page level. It copies the output string to the Clipboard, from which you can paste the string into a text editor for review.

UpdateHierarchy method

DescriptionModifies or updates the hierarchy of notebooks. For example, you can add sections or section groups to a notebook, add a new notebook, move sections within a notebook, change the name of a section, add pages to a section, or change the order of pages within sections.SyntaxHRESULT UpdateHierarchy( (in)BSTR bstrChangesXmlIn, (in,defaultvalue(xsCurrent)) XMLSchema xsSchema);ParametersbstrChangesXmlIn – A string that contains OneNote XML code that specifies the hierarchy changes to make. For example, if you want to insert a new section, you can add a Section element in the XML string to indicate where you want the new section to be added. Alternatively, if you want to change the name of an existing section, you can keep the same section ID and change its name attribute in the XML code. xsSchema – (Optional) The OneNote schema version of the string bstrChangesXmln. This optional value is used to specify the version of the OneNote XML schema that the bstrChangesXmlIn string is in. If this value is not specified, OneNote will assume that the XML is in schema version xsCurrent. NOTE: We recommend specifying a version of OneNote (such as xs2013) instead of using xsCurrent or leaving it blank, because this will allow your add-in to work with future versions of OneNote.

If you pass only a partial OneNote XML string for the bstrChangesXmlIn parameter, OneNote attempts to infer the changes you want. For example, if you include a Notebook element that contains only one section, OneNote adds the section after any existing sections. However, if the operation you specify is ambiguous, the result can be hard to determine. For example, if an existing notebook contains four sections, and the XML string you pass includes the notebook and only the fourth and first sections (in that order), OneNote might place the second and third sections before the fourth section or after the first section.

You cannot use the UpdateHierarchy method to delete part of a notebook. That is, passing an XML string that includes only part of an existing hierarchy does not delete sections that are not included in the string. To delete part of a hierarchy, use the DeleteHierarchy method.

The following C# code shows one way to use the UpdateHierarchy method to change the OneNote hierarchy, by changing the name of an existing section. It reads XML code from a sample file named ChangeSectionName.xml at the root of drive C, loads it into an XML document, and then passes the XML structure of that document to the method.

The following XML code is an excerpt of the ChangeSectionName.xml file that the previous C# code passes to the method. When the XML is passed to the UpdateHierarchy method, it changes the name of one of the sections in the existing hierarchy (by changing the value of the name attribute to 'My Renamed Section'). It then removes all the sections except the one whose name was changed. In addition, the code removes unnecessary attributes from the target Section element, including the lastModifiedTime, isCurrentlyViewed, and color attributes, leaving only the name, ID, and path attributes intact.

The preceding XML code was obtained by using the code shown in the example for the GetHierarchy method, which is modified, as follows, to limit the scope to sections.

The following C# example shows a complete console application that searches for a section named ' Sample_Section', prompts the user to input a new name for the section, and then uses the UpdateHierarchy method to change the section name to the name that the user typed. Before running the code, change ' Sample_Section' to the name of a section that exists in your OneNote hierarchy.

OpenHierarchy method

Description Opens a section group or section that you specify. Syntax HRESULT OpenHierarchy( (in)BSTR bstrPath, (in)BSTR bstrRelativeToObjectID, (out)BSTR * pbstrObjectID, (in,defaultvalue(cftNone))CreateFileType cftIfNotExist); Parameters bstrPath – The path that you want to open. For a notebook, or for a section group in a notebook, bstrPath can be a folder path or the path to an .one section file. If you specify the path to an .one section file, you must include the .one extension on the file-path string. bstrRelativeToObjectID – The OneNote ID of the parent object (notebook or section group) under which you want the new object to open. If the bstrPath parameter is an absolute path, you can pass an empty string (') for bstrRelativeToObjectID. Alternatively, you can pass the object ID of the notebook or section group that should contain the object (section or section group) that you want to create, and then specify the file name (for example, section1.one) of the object that you want to create under that parent object. pbstrObjectID – (Output parameter) The object ID that OneNote returns for the notebook, section group, or section that the OpenHierarchy method opens. This parameter is a pointer to the string into which you want the method to write the ID. cftlfNotExist – (Optional) An enumerated value from the CreateFileType enumeration. If you pass a value for cftIfNotExist, the OpenHierarchy method creates the section group or section file at the specified path only if the file does not already exist.

If you specify a section group that is not in an open notebook, the OpenHierarchy method opens the section group as a notebook. If you specify a section that is not in an open notebook, the OpenHierarchy method opens the section in the Recent Opened Sections section group. If you specify a section group or section that is already in an open notebook, nothing happens because the section group or section is already open, as well. In any case, OpenHierarchy returns the object ID for the section group, notebook, or section that you specify, so that you can use it in other operations.

You can also use the OpenHierarchy method to create new sections, instead of doing so by importing XML.

The following code shows how to use the OpenHierarchy method to open the Meetings section in the Work notebook and get the ID for the section. If the section does not already exist, OneNote creates it in the location that you specify.

DeleteHierarchy method

Description Deletes any hierarchy object (a section group, section, or page) from the OneNote notebook hierarchy. Syntax HRESULT DeleteHierarchy( (in)BSTR bstrObjectID, (in,defaultvalue(0))DATE dateExpectedLastModified, (in,defaultvalue(false))VARIANT_BOOL deletePermanently); Parameters bstrObjectID – The OneNote ID of the object you want to delete. The object can be a section group, section, or page. dateExpectedLastModified – (Optional) The date and time that you think the object you want to delete was last modified. If you pass a non-zero value for this parameter, OneNote proceeds with the update only if the value you pass matches the actual date and time the object was last modified. Passing a value for this parameter helps prevent accidentally overwriting edits users made since the last time the object was modified. deletePermanently – (Optional) true to permanently delete the content; false to move the content into the OneNote recycle bin for the corresponding Notebook (the default). If the Notebook is in OneNote 2007 format, no recycle bin exists, so the content is permanently deleted.

CreateNewPage method

Description Adds a new page to the section you specify. The new page is added as the last page of the section Syntax HRESULT CreateNewPage( (in)BSTR bstrSectionID, (out)BSTR * pbstrPageID); (in,defaultvalue(npsDefault))NewPageStyle npsNewPageStyle); Parameters bstrSectionID – A string that contains the OneNote ID of the section in which you want to create the new page. pbstrPageID – (Output parameter) A pointer to the string into which the method writes the OneNote ID for the newly created page. npsNewPageStyle – A value from the NewPageStyle enumeration that specifies the style of the page to be created.

The OneNote API includes the CreateNewPage method as a convenience. You can achieve the same result, with greater control over how the new page is positioned in the hierarchy, by calling the UpdateHierarchy method. The UpdateHierarchy method also lets you create subpages at the same time as you create a new page.

CloseNotebook method

Description Closes the specified notebook. Syntax HRESULT CloseNotebook( (in)BSTR bstrNotebookID, (in,defaultvalue(false))VARIANT_BOOL force); Parameters bstrNotebookID – The OneNote ID of the notebook you want to close. force – (Optional) true to close the notebook, even if there are changes in the notebook that OneNote cannot sync before closing; otherwise, false (the default).

You can use the CloseNotebook method to close the notebook you specify. When you call this method, OneNote synchronizes any offline files with current notebook content, if necessary, and then closes the specified notebook. After the method returns, the notebook no longer appears in the list of open notebooks in the OneNote user interface (UI).

GetHierarchyParent method

Description Gets the OneNote ID for the parent object of a OneNote object. Syntax HRESULT GetHierarchyParent ( (in)BSTR bstrObjectID, (out)BSTR * pbstrParentID); Parameters bstrObjectID – A string that contains the OneNote ID of the object of which you want to find the parent object. pbstrParentID – (Output parameter) A pointer to the string into which the method writes the OneNote ID of the parent object.

If the OneNote object has no parent object (for example, when a user wants to get the parent of a Notebook), an exception is thrown.

GetSpecialLocation method

Description Finds the path to the location where OneNote stores certain special items, such as backups, unfiled notes, and the default notebook. Syntax HRESULT GetSpecialLocation( (in)SpecialLocation slToGet, (out)BSTR * pbstrSpecialLocationPath); Parameters slToGet – One of the SpecialLocation enumeration values that specifies the special folder location to get. pbstrSpecialLocationPath – (Output parameter) A pointer to the string into which you want OneNote to write the path of the special folder.

You can use this method to determine the location on disk of the Unfiled Notes folder. That is the folder in which OneNote stores notes that are created when you drag an item into OneNote, as well as notes that come directly from other applications (such as those that result when you click Send to OneNote in Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Internet Explorer).

Page Content methods

The methods described in this section enable you to discover, update, and delete the content on pages in OneNote notebooks, as well as to publish OneNote content.

GetPageContent method

Binary content can include, for example, images and ink data. The pageInfoToExport parameter also specifies whether to mark up the selection in the XML code that the GetPageContent method returns. It takes an enumerated value from the PageInfo enumeration. xsSchema – (Optional) The version of the OneNote XML schema, of type XMLSchema, that you want to be output. You can specify whether you want XML Schema version 2013, 2010, 2007, or the current version. NOTE: We recommend specifying a version of OneNote (such as xs2013) instead of using xsCurrent or leaving it blank, because this will allow your add-in to work with future versions of OneNote.

By default, to avoid excess length in the XML string it returns, OneNote does not embed binary content in the XML code. For the same reason, it does not mark up the current selection with selection attributes. Binary objects include a OneNote ID in their tags. To get a binary object, you call the GetBinaryPageContent method and pass it the OneNote ID you get from the GetPageContent method. You use the GetPageContent method when you do not need the binary data immediately.

UpdatePageContent method

You can use this method to modify the page in various ways. For example, you can use the UpdatePageContent method to add an outline to a page, change the content of an outline, add images, add ink, move content, or modify text in outlines.

As a more specific example, you might use the GetPageContent method to export an existing page, make some changes to the XML code for the page, and then use the UpdatePageContent method to import the entire page again. Or, you might use this method to add new page objects, such as images, to the bottom of an existing page.

The only objects that you must include in the XML code that you pass to the UpdatePageContent method are page-level objects (such as outlines, images on the page, or ink on the page) that have changed. This method does not modify or remove page-level objects that you do not specify in the bstrPageChangesXmlIn parameter. The method entirely replaces page-level objects, such as outlines, whose IDs match those of the objects you pass. Consequently, you must fully specify all page-level objects in your code, including their existing content and changes you want to make to them.

For example, if your page contains an outline and a background page image, you can replace the outline and leave the image unchanged by completely specifying the outline in the XML code, using the ID of the existing outline, and not including the image in the code. Because the revised outline you include in the code completely replaces the existing outline, you must include the entire contents of the outline.

Also, the UpdatePageContent method modifies only element properties that you specify in the bstrPageChangesXmlIn parameter. For example, if you specify some, but not all, properties of the PageSettings element, the properties that you do not specify remain unchanged.

The following example shows how to use the UpdatePageContent method to change the title of a page and add some sample text to the page. Before running the code, substitute a valid page ID for the page ID shown in the code, so that the code works on your computer. You can get the page ID for a page by using the GetHierarchy method and examining the output.

GetBinaryPageContent method

Description Returns a binary object, such as ink or images, on an OneNote page as a base-64-encoded string. Syntax HRESULT GetBinaryPageContent( (in)BSTR bstrPageID, (in)BSTR bstrCallbackID, (out)BSTR * pbstrBinaryObjectB64Out); Parameters bstrPageID – The OneNote ID of the page that contains the binary object to get. bstrCallBackID – The OneNote ID of the binary object you want to get. This ID, known as a callbackID, is in the OneNote XML code for a page returned by the GetPageContent method. pbstrBinaryObectB64Out – (Output parameter) A pointer to a string into which OneNote writes the binary object as a base-64-encoded string.

DeletePageContent method

Description Deletes an object – such as an Outline, Ink, or Image object from a page. Syntax HRESULT DeletePageContent( (in)BSTR bstrPageID, (in)BSTR bstrObjectID, (in,defaultvalue(0))DATE dateExpectedLastModified, (in,defaultvalue(#))VARIANT_BOOL force); Parameters bstrPageID – The OneNote ID of the page that contains the object to delete. bstrObjectID – The OneNote ID of the object that you want to delete. dateExpectedLastModified – (Optional) The date and time that you think the page that contains content you want to delete was last modified. If you pass a non-zero value for this parameter, OneNote proceeds with the deletion only if the value you pass matches the actual date and time the page was last modified. Passing a value for this parameter helps prevent accidentally overwriting edits made by users since the last time the page was modified. force – (Optional) true to update the page content, even if there is unknown data on the page from a future version of OneNote; otherwise, false (the default).

Publish method

Description Exports the page you specify to a file in any format that OneNote supports. Syntax HRESULT Publish( (in)BSTR bstrHierarchyID, (in)BSTR bstrTargetFilePath, (in,defaultvalue(pfOneNote))PublishFormat pfPublishFormat, (in,defaultvalue(0))BSTR bstrCLSIDofExporter); Parameters bstrHierarchyID – The OneNote ID of the hierarchy you want to export. bstrTargetFilePath – The absolute path to the location where you want to save the resulting output file. The file you specify must be one that does not already exist at that location. pfPublishFormat – One of the PublishFormat enumeration values that specifies the format in which you want the published page to be (for example, MTHML, PDF, and so on). bstrCLSIDofExporter – The class ID (CLSID) of a registered COM application that can export Microsoft Windows enhanced metafiles (.emf). The COM application must implement the IMsoDocExporter interface. This parameter is included to permit third-party developers to write their own code to publish OneNote content in a custom format. This method produces exactly the same results you would get by clicking Publish in the UI and specifying the format.

Navigation methods

The methods described in this section enable you to find, navigate to, and link to OneNote notebooks, section groups, sections, pages, and page objects.

NavigateTo method

Description Navigates to the specified object (for example, sections, pages, and Outline elements within pages). Syntax HRESULT NavigateTo( (in)BSTR bstrHierarchyObjectID, (in,defaultvalue(#))BSTR bstrObjectID, (in,defaultvalue(0))VARIANT_BOOL fNewWindow); Parameters bstrHierarchyObjectID – The OneNote ID of the object you want to navigate to in the OneNote Hierarchy. bstrObjectID – The OneNote ID of the object you want to navigate to on the OneNote page. fNewWindow – (Optional) true to open specified object in a new OneNote window. false does not open a new OneNote window if one is open.

NavigateToUrl method

Description If passed a OneNote link (onenote://), opens the OneNote window to the corresponding location in OneNote. If the link is external to OneNote (such as https:// or file://), a security dialog box will appear. Upon dismissal, OneNote attempts to open the link and an HResult.hrObjectDoesNotExist error is returned. Syntax HRESULT NavigateTo( (in)BSTR bstrUrl, (in,defaultvalue(0))VARIANT_BOOL fNewWindow); Parameters bstrUrl – A string that indicates where to navigate to. This could be a OneNote link, or any other URL, such as a web link or network location. fNewWindow – (Optional) true to open the specified URL in a new OneNote window. false does not open a new OneNote window if one is open.

GetHyperLinkToObject method

Description Gets a OneNote hyperlink to the specified notebook, section group, section, page, or page object. Syntax HRESULT GetHyperlinkToObject( (in) BSTR bstrHierarchyID, (in) BSTR bstrPageContentObjectID, (out) BSTR * pbstrHyperlinkOut); Parameters bstrHierarchyID – The OneNote ID for the notebook, section group, section, or page for which you want a hyperlink. bstrPageContentObjectID – (Optional) The OneNote ID for the object within the page for which you want a hyperlink. For example, the object can be an outline or Outline element. If you pass an empty string ('), the returned link points to the notebook, section group, section, or page that you specified in the bstrHierarchyID parameter. If you pass a non-empty string for the bstrPageContentObjectID parameter, the bstrHierarchyID parameter must be a reference to the page that contains the specified object. pbstrHyperlinkOut – (Output parameter) A pointer to a string into which the GetHyperlinkToObject method writes the output hyperlink text.

When you attempt to navigate to the resulting link, OneNote opens and displays the specified object in the browser.

GetWebHyperlinktoObject method

Description Returns a hyperlink to an object that opens in the OneNote Web Client. Syntax HRESULT GetWebHyperlinkToObject ( (in) BSTR bstrHierarchyID, (in) BSTR bstrPageContentObjectID, (out) BSTR * pbstrHyperlinkOut); Parameters bstrHierarchyID – The OneNote ID for the notebook, section group, section or page for which you want a web hyperlink. bstrPageContentObjectID – (Optional) The OneNote ID for the object within the page for which you want a hyperlink. For example, the object can be an outline or Outline element. If you pass an empty string ('), the returned link points to the notebook, section group, section, or page that you specified in the bstrHierarchyID parameter. If you pass a non-empty string for the bstrPageContentObjectID parameter, the bstrHierarchyID parameter must be a reference to the page that contains the specified object. pbstrHyperlinkOut – (Output parameter) A pointer to a string into which the GetWebHyperlinkToObject method writes the output hyperlink text. If a web hyperlink cannot be created for the notebook, a null value is returned.

FindPages method

For example, the FindPages method does not list sections that have no page matches in the hierarchy. Also, if only one page in a single section matches the string, the returned hierarchy includes the path to that section and page, but to no other parts of the notebook hierarchy. fIncludeUnindexedPages – (Optional) true to search pages that have not been indexed by Windows Search; otherwise, false. fDisplay – (Optional) true to also run the search in the UI for the user, just as if the user had typed it themselves. false to perform the query with no change to the UI (the default). xsSchema – (Optional) The OneNote schema version of the string pbstrHierarchyXmlOut. This optional value is used to specify the version of the OneNote XML schema that contains the pbstrHierarchyXmlOut string. If this value is not specified, OneNote will assume that the XML is in schema version xsCurrent. NOTE: We recommend specifying a version of OneNote (such as xs2013) instead of using xsCurrent or leaving it blank, because this will allow your add-in to work with future versions of OneNote.

Functional methods

The methods described in this section enable you to perform certain actions or set parameters within the OneNote application.

MergeFiles method

Description Allows users to merge changes for the same file into one. For the files to be considered the same, they must have the same OneNote ID. Syntax HRESULT MergeFiles ( (in)BSTR bstrBaseFile, (in)BSTR bstrClientFile, (in)BSTR bstrServerFile, (in)BSTR bstrTargetFile); Parameters bstrBaseFile – The path string to the .one file location of the initial state of the file. bstrClientFile – The path string to the .one file location of the second set of changes to be merged with the base file after the server file changes are merged with the base. bstrServerFile – The path string to the .one file location of the first set of changes to be merged with the base file. bstrTargetFile – The path string to the .one file location of the file with the merged changes.

The MergeFiles method was intended for mobile scenarios in which multiple versions of an OneNote file may exist.

MergeSections method

Description Merges the content of one section into another in OneNote. Syntax HRESULT MergeSections ( (in)BSTR bstrSectionSourceId, (in)BSTR bstrSectionDestinationId); Parameters bstrSectionSourceId – The OneNote ID of the section to be merged. bstrSectionDestinationId – The OneNote ID of the section to be merged into. The source section will be merged into this destination section.

This method performs the same operation as the Merge into Another Section feature that is visible when you right-click a section.

QuickFiling method

Description Returns an instance of the IQuickFilingDialog dialog box, which can be used to select a location within the OneNote hierarchy tree. Syntax HRESULT QuickFiling ( );

SyncHierarchy method

Description Forces OneNote to sync the specified object with the source file on disk. Syntax HRESULT SyncHierarchy ( (in)BSTR bstrHierarchyID); Parameters bstrHierarchyID – The OneNote ID of the object to be synced.

SetFilingLocation method

Description Allows users to specify where and how certain types of content should be filed in OneNote. Syntax HRESULT SetFilingLocation ( (in)FilingLocation flToSet, (in)FilingLocationType fltToSet, (in)BSTR bstrFilingSectionID); Parameters flToSet – The object type of the filing location to set. fltToSet – The location in which to file the type. bstrFilingSectionID – The OneNote ID of the section or page at which location you want to set. If not applicable, the user can pass in null or an empty string.

The types of content that can be filed include Outlook items and Web Notes from Internet Explorer that are imported to OneNote through the Send to OneNote command in each application. The filing location of items that are printed into OneNote can also be set with this method.

Properties

This section describes the properties of the Application interface.

Onenote .on Mac

PropertyDescriptionWindows Gives users access to opened OneNote windows. This property allows users to enumerate through the set of OneNote windows and modify certain window properties. For more information, see Windows Interfaces. COMAddIns Returns the COMAddIns collection for OneNote. This collection contains all of the COM add-ins that are available to OneNote. OnNavigate event

Description Allows a user to assign a function to be called when the OneNote UI is navigated away from the current OneNote location. Syntax Event OnNavigate ( );

OnHierarchyChange method

Description Allows a user to assign a function to be called any time the OneNote hierarchy changes (for example, adding or deleting pages, or moving sections). Hierarchy changes are batched, so if multiple changes occur at or near the same time, OneNote raises the event once. Syntax Event OnHierarchyChange ( BSTR bstrActivePageID); Parameters bstrActivePageID – Passes the OneNote ID of the active page.

Today’s focus is on taking a slow, close look at Affinity Photo, with the goal of ultimately understanding the basics of this affordable yet powerful program!

What You’ll Need

You will need the following resources in order to complete this project:

1. How to Create and Prepare a New Document

To start things off, we’ll be learning how to create a fresh new document and how to bring in images to edit!

Step 1

First, open up Affinity Photo.

Once it’s open, you will be able to create a new document in one of two ways. You can click the New Document button on the bottom right-hand corner of the Affinity Photo splash screen.

Alternatively, you can go to File > New in the upper left-hand corner of Affinity Photo.

Step 2

Next, in our New Document panel, we will be setting up our document to make sure it’s print-ready.

Type: Print

Affinity Photo has suggested settings depending on what you intend to do with your image. In this case, I want my image to be print-ready, so I choose Print.

Page Preset: Custom

Today our canvas won’t be a standard size, so I choose Custom. A good default size to chose in a lot of circumstances is A4 as that is your standard medium-sized poster or print.

Document Units: Millimeters

This is personal preference—in fact, usually I work in inches or pixels, but today it’ll be Millimeters. You can change this at any time, and Affinity Photo will simply convert one unit to another.

Color Format: RGB/8

Here we are choosing how many bits we want our image to be. When printing, we always want RGB/8. You can always convert from RGB/16 later; however, you will notice a slight change in your image’s colors and tones.

Color Profile: Adobe RGB

A lot of people start off with a different Color Profile, such as Adobe RGB, and then convert to sRGB when saving something for the internet. I am one of those people. However, if you don’t need to worry about printing, and your images are internet only, feel free to always set this to sRGB!

Also be sure to check Transparent Background.

Width x Height: 276 mm x 414 mm

This one is self-explanatory, luckily!

DPI: 300

DPI stands for “Dots Per Inch” meaning “For every inch, there will be this many printed dots.” When preparing a file that you intend to print, you want your DPI to be no lower than 230, and ideally you want it to be right at 300.

If you aren’t printing then the default is usually 72 asDPI has absolutely no effect on web-based images.

After all that, we get to finally press OK!

Step 3

Now we will be dropping the first image onto our canvas.

I find the easiest way to import an image into Affinity Photo is to drag and drop it into the document.

Two Things to Note!

Images are smart objects by default. This means that you can shrink, stretch and pull them without losing any pixel quality permanently. This is most helpful for when you shrink an image too much and need to enlarge it.

Affinity Photo automatically keeps the image ratio of your image by default. This means that, when adjusting the size of an image, you need to hold down Shift if you want to resize it without the ratio being locked. In Photoshop, it’s the opposite!

With that information, we can now properly place and size our Dark Forest Background to fill out the canvas.

2. How to Quickly Remove Objects From an Image

Next, we will be preparing our Sensuous Woman stock image, which includes removing her earrings.

Step 1

Drag and drop in the Sensuous Woman image and size her similar to what you see below, placing her above the dark forest background layer.

I will rename and refer to this layer as the “Model” layer from here on out.

Step 2

There are several ways to remove an object from an image. In this case, our model is on a flat black background, which simplifies our job significantly. Today we will be using the Clone Brush Tool.

With the Clone Brush Tool selected, change the Brush Hardness to 70%. Start off with a medium brush size and change the brush size as needed while painting.

Hold Alt and click on a section of the black background to select it as a source.

With short horizontal strokes, paint black over the earrings until they are no longer visible. I recommend using a smaller brush the closer you get to the face.

Step 3

Let’s move on by setting our model layer to Screen.

To change a layer’s Layer Mode, look towards the top-right of the Layers panel, to the right of Opacity. It will always be set to Normal by default.

3. How to Create a Double Exposure Effect

Finally, on to the fun stuff: painting! I will be using a Wacom graphics tablet to paint, but you can use any tablet, a mouse, or even premade tree brushes/shapes!

Step 1

Create a New Layer below the model by hitting the Add Pixel button on the bottom-right corner of the Layers panel.

You can move and reorder a layer by hitting left-click and dragging it above or below another layer.

Step 2

Select the Paint Brush Tool, and thenin the top toolbar change the Hardness to 89% and the Color to black #000000.

If you are using a tablet, you will want to turn on the Force Pressure option, located to the right of Hardness and More in the top toolbar.

The brush size will change as needed to paint our branches.

Step 3

Next, let’s start painting some trees! This may sound intimidating if you aren’t a painter; however, we are trying to recreate the same shapes of trees that are in the background. We basically are just tracing, and once you get the feeling and movement of painting trees down then you can start free-handing them!

You’ll notice that wherever you paint black, you will see more of the model, so we want to focus color on the eyes and mouth.

Below I turned off my “Model” layer so you can more clearly see what I painted. However, you should paint with your model layer on.

Step 4

You may have noticed above that I painted some soft black towards the bottom of the canvas. That was to bring back the model’s shoulders.

Change the brush’s Hardness to 0% and paint to achieve the same soft-brush effect.

Let’s do the same thing to the left and right sides of the model’s face and around her eyes to bring out her features more.

This time, bring the brush’s Flow down to 5% and the Hardness to 0%.

Flow is located to the left of Hardness in the upper brush toolbar.

The flow amount tells the brush how much to paint at one time. Notice how when you paint with a low flow percentage, you can slowly build up color, creating a very soft and subtle edge.

Step 5

To finish off my trees, I free-handed some more branches around the model’s nose and eyes, as I really want these features to stand out.

When I turn my “Model” layer back on, this is what we have!

Remember, I recommend you keep your model layer on while painting. I only turned it off so you could better see my exact lines.

You can turn a layer on and off by clicking the checkmark to the right of the layer’s name.

4. How to Apply a Wood Grain Texture

Next up, we will be adding a wood grain texture from the Wood Grain Texture Pack to our model.

Step 1

Drag and drop a wood grain texture onto the canvas, above our “Model” layer. I used “06” from the pack.

Set the texture’s layer to Overlay.

Step 2

Add a Layer Mask to the texture layer by clicking the Mask Layer button, which is the first button located to the middle-right of the Layers panel.

Layer masks work like this: Anywhere you paint white will show, and anywhere you paint black will become hidden. Layer masks are a great way of “erasing” things without actually erasing them as you can always bring something back by painting white!

All layer masks start off as white by default, but we want ours black. So let’s click on the layer mask and hit Command-I to invert the layer mask, which will turn it black, which in turn will hide our texture.

Step 3

So we hid our texture with a black layer mask, and now we are going to paint some of the texture back in using a white #ffffff brush!

Select the Paint Brush Tool, and set the color to white, the Hardness to 0%, and the Flow to 100%.

Paint the wood grain texture back onto the model’s face and chest.

5. How to Create a Dual-Tone Color Grading Effect

To finish our image off, we are going to be doing some pretty intense color grading.

We will be color grading using a whopping six different adjustment layers that will be placed above all other layers.

You can find adjustment layers by clicking the Adjustments button in the middle of the Layers panel.

Be sure to pay attention to the order—how you order the layers will affect the overall outcome! We will be creating the layers starting bottom to top, meaning the last layer we create will be at the very top of our Layers panel.

Create a Curves adjustment layer, dragging the three white dots to match what you see below:

Create a Black & White adjustment layer. Settings: Red 86%, Yellow 0%, Green 131%, Cyan 148%, and Blue 300%.

Step 3

Create another Curves adjustment layer.

To change what color curve you are controlling, change Master to Red, Green, or Blue.

Each color has a slight adjustment, so I’ve shown each curve individually below, circling where I moved each curve point.

Step 4

Create a ColorBalance adjustment layer. Red 14%, Green -18%, and Blue -51%.

Step 5

Create a Lens Filter adjustment layer.Settings: Filter Color R:255 G:59 B:0 and Optical Density 79%.

Create a Split Toning adjustment layer.Settings below:

We’ve Done It!

Creating a double exposure effect will always impress! And, even better, we have learned that we don’t have to be confined by just images and that sometimes painting in your own background to create the structure of the double exposure effect can give you a much stronger sense of control.

Project and Task Management

You can make to-do lists on Notion and Trello. That reduces your reliance on constantly moving around lists from other to-do apps such as Todoist or TickTick.

You will have to use templates on Notion. You can find several to-do templates in the Notion Template Gallery, and you can choose one according to your requirements.

Notion’s weekly agenda template is my favorite to manage small projects, and I humbly recommend it to everyone.

You can give it a relevant name, add a cover photo and icon to get started. Now, add tasks below the weekdays, and as a bonus, you can integrate reminder notifications.

Type ‘/remind’ and add the date and time to get notified on mobile or PC.

As for managing huge projects, Notion offers several project management templates. Among them, Roadmap is my favorite one. To me, the Roadmap template is like Trello on steroids.

You can keep track of ongoing projects, add issues, integrate tags, share it with a team member, and more. Not only that, but one can also tap on the tab and see all the details regarding it.

You can add as many suitable table contents as you wish. After that, you need to integrate tags and buttons to get the maximum out of the template.

Trello popularized Kanban-style project management with drag and drop function, and is sticking to its strength by setting it as the default option.

Trello sticks to the basic board view. Based on your requirements, you can give the board a relevant name and set up the whole thing. Here is how I use it.

I have added tasks to assigned, in-going, in-going, in review, and completed tabs for the Product timeline. I tag the tasks to a relevant team member, add details such as image, description, and conversation in the comments menu.

For bug tracking, I have made a separate board that shows the ongoing projects in the company. Below each project, I add app progress issues, tag the team member, add details and screenshot of the bug, and archive it once it's fixed.

That said, Notion can be a bit confusing and overwhelming folks just starting off with it. The process involves finding the right template for you. Trello has more user-friendly process to get started.

Features and Sharing

Trello relies on third-party integration with other apps. They are called power-ups. The list of apps is endless here. It's neatly categorized into sub-sections in the Power-up menu. I'm sure you will stumble upon something you use daily.

Using power-ups, you can add Trello tasks to Google Calendar as well. Trello also feels visually pleasing with minimal efforts.

Todoist Integration Office 365

Notion is can be your ultimate workspace to organize your information and work of your teams. You can build a subscription tracker, finance tool, book tracking page, and more. The possibilities are endless.

As expected, both the software allows you to invite members to a board or workspace. You will find all the member activities in the notification panel.

Notion is free for personal use. As for team sharing, you can invite up to 5 users to a team. The paid plans start at $4 per member per month.

Trello offers the premium version called Trello Gold. With $3.75/month, you get access to all the customization features, add files more than 10MB size, and use third-party integration from the other apps.

Pick One Wisely

Both apps offer compelling task and project management capabilities with the help of templates. However, both differ when it comes to execution. Raised by Mormon survivalists

Tara Westover was born in a small Idaho farming town, the youngest of the seven children of Mormon survivalists Val and Laree Westover, hidden under the pseudonyms Gene and Faye in the book. Due to the beliefs of the couple, Tara was born at home, and she was not issued a birth certificate until she reached the age of 9. Until then, there was no way for anybody outside of her family to know she had been born at all: Gene and Faye had decided to live in isolation after the 1992 Ruby Ridge incident, in which federal agents ambushed and gunned down a woman and her 14-year-old son for, at worst, a minor offense.

Even before that event, Gene had firmly believed that public schools were just a way for the socialist American government to brainwash individuals into obedient slaves of the system, which is why neither Tara nor her six siblings ever got a proper chance to experience education. Gene didn’t believe in hospitals either, meaning Tara’s concussions or burns over the years were treated with herbs and home medicines. On the other hand, Gene did believe in a Mormon God, and this god (like, unfortunately, most other gods) didn’t seem to be that fond of women, proclaiming their place to be in the house – which is where Faye was all of the time.

Tara’s grandmother wanted her youngest granddaughter to get a proper education, so one day, when Tara was 7, she offered her a chance to escape to Arizona and go to school. Tara, however, stayed. To nobody’s surprise, really, not even hers. To this day, she claims, she has very fond memories of her childhood. In view of what followed, that is somehow hard to believe.

Opening doors to the world

At the age of 10, Tara’s mindset changed abruptly. It happened when her 18-year-old brother Tyler, the third son of Gene and Faye, announced one day his intention to go to college. Gene, of course, objected to this choice, both because Tyler’s older brothers Tony and Shawn were not around the house anymore to help and because, well, he believed that going to school would not teach him how to support a wife and a few children. However, Tyler persisted, and this inspired Tara to start reading a bit more, mostly the New Testament and the Book of Mormon.

Soon after Tyler left, Tara’s older sister Audrey left the house as well; and the only ones who remained were Luke, Richard, and her. Due to the lack of helping hands, Gene had to move away from farming and Tara had to help him. So, already at the age of 11, she was scrapping old cars for parts. However, she felt that she could do better, so one day, she posted a flyer at the local post office, offering her services as a babysitter. This opened her up to the world.

One of her clients, a woman named Mary, offered Tara an opportunity to visit a dance school. Tara enjoyed the experience very much, but her father soon forbade her to go anymore, believing that dancing inspired immodest and unfeminine behavior. By then, however, Tara had started taking voice lessons as well, and these were something even her father could find nothing wrong with. Especially after they helped Tara impress the congregation at their local church one Sunday. In fact, she was good enough to even get a part in a play at the local Worm Creek Opera House. More importantly, she was starting to enjoy life.

It’s the end of the world – as we know it

As far as Gene was concerned, Tara’s 13th birthday should have been her last. Not because she had done something to drive him mad, but because it was supposed to occur sometime during September 1999, about three months before the end of the world. A Mormon survivalist, Gene believed that on January 1st, 2000, all the computer systems in the world would fail and that there would be no electricity or telephones anymore. Everything would sink into chaos, he claimed, and this would usher in the Second Coming of Christ.

English philosopher Thomas Hobbes once said that there exists nothing worse than a man believing to have had a revelation, since no argument would convince them of the opposite. Not even if reality invalidated their beliefs. Psychologists call this cognitive dissonance, and we all suffer from it. In the case of Gene, the problem was far more severe than it is for the rest of us. Case in point: even when the end of the world didn’t arrive with the year 2000, he didn’t change his beliefs. He just changed the dates. Even so, his worldview was visibly shaken, so the family finally left Idaho for Arizona to visit Tara’s grandmother.

On the way there, the family’s van spun off the road and crashed into a field. Everyone survived, but Tara was badly hurt, even losing consciousness for a while. That did not matter one bit to Gene: as far as he was concerned, curing Tara was a job for God and Nature, not for doctors. Fortunately, even though Tara’s neck frequently locked up on her for a while, the accident didn’t leave any permanent damage. Even her neck got back to normal, eventually.

However, untreated head injuries not unlike Tara’s probably contributed to the very unstable condition of her brother Shawn, who continually abused her and her sisters. Prone to violence and as fanatic as his father, he once violently attacked Tara, waking her up from her sleep and dragging her by her hair from her bed. The reason? Tara had started wearing makeup and spending time with a boy named Charles. In Shawn’s opinion, this was not an appropriate behavior for a 15-year-old girl. Gene’s reaction? A little short of, “Way to go, son!”

College, finally

Encouraged by her brother Tyler, at the age of 16, Tara finally decided to take the ACT test, a standardized test used for college admission in the United States, not too dissimilar from the much more well-known SAT test. Tara failed the test, scoring 22 out of the 27 points she needed to get into Brigham Young University (BYU), a Utah-based university entirely owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – that is to say, the Mormons.

Considering the fact that she barely knew any math, it wasn’t such a bad score; however, she was devastated. It took her some time to recuperate and a lot of help from her mother to figure out algebra and geometry. The effort was more than worthwhile. When Tara took the ACT again, she scored 28! Everybody was happy with the result, except for her father, who didn’t want to let Tara go. His reason? God had told him personally that Tara would greatly displease the Almighty if she ever went to college.

Even so, Tara decided to throw all caution to the wind and three days before her 17th birthday, she left for BYU. It wasn’t long before she started experiencing culture shock. For example, one of the first things she noticed there was that her roommate Shannon wore pants that had the word “Juicy” written on them. In an act that seemed blasphemous to the teenage Tara, her other friend Mary even dared to shop on the Sabbath!

The classes were challenging and scary for Tara. She took English, American history, Western civilization, religion, and music. As you might guess, she didn’t have many problems with the last two, but she had quite a few with everything else. The history she had been taught at her house was very different from the history being taught at university, and the whole idea of Western civilization seemed as strange to her as Einstein’s theories of relativity would seem to a novice in physics.

Just one quick example. One day, she asked her professor what the word “Holocaust” meant. The professor thought she was joking and scolded her. She wasn’t, of course. Her father had talked at some length about the Boston massacre and the Ruby Ridge incident, but he had never mentioned the Holocaust. So, Tara believed that, at worst, it was just some small conflict that very few people would really know about.

The education of Tara Westover

The Holocaust incident didn’t discourage Tara. On the contrary, she started studying harder and, after overcoming the initial issues, she eventually sailed through almost all of her exams, Western civilization being the only exception. Not wanting to leave any gaps in her knowledge, she didn’t back off. So, eventually, she aced that exam as well.

But that was always her philosophy. It wasn’t, “Stay away from things you don’t understand,” but rather, “Where trying doesn’t work, try again and try harder.” Consequently, even though she had come to college to study music, she kept signing up for history and politics classes. Her professors noticed her enthusiasm, and one of them referred her to a study-abroad program at the University of Cambridge.

Tara applied and, soon enough, she was headed to King’s College, Cambridge, to study a course under world-renowned professor of European history, Jonathan Steinberg. Just a short time prior, she didn’t even know what the word “Holocaust” meant and now Steinberg, a Holocaust expert, was supposed to grade her words and ideas. Amazingly, he had only nice things to say about them, telling Tara that her final essay was one of the best he had ever seen in his long career. Because of this, he promised to help her with her graduate application.

And that’s how Tara managed to win the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, only the third BYU student to achieve this feat in the long history of the university. After enrolling at the prestigious Trinity College, Tara became a celebrity back in Idaho and was revered by almost everyone who had ever known her. Everyone except her father Gene and her brother Shawn, that is.

Family troubles

Everything was going well after Tara returned to England, this time as a graduate student. So, well, in fact, that Tara began feeling as if she was a new person, one who was allowed to drink coffee and wine, and even tell stories of her fabulously strange upbringing. However, back at home, things were stranger and darker than ever.

First, Gene suffered an accident which almost killed him and left him with severe burns all over his body. Even so, he refused medical help and, once again, stayed alive against all odds. Then, Tara received a letter from her sister Audrey, in which she informed Tara that she was planning to confront her parents about the abuse she suffered from Shawn. Tara stood by her side and went back home to testify in her favor.

However, Gene and Faye were left unconvinced by the claims of the sisters, even though Shawn had explicitly threatened to kill them in their presence. To make matters worse, he repeated the threat to Tara by phone, not long after ceremoniously hugging her during the peacemaking sessions with their parents. Simply put, he was beyond treatment.

The same could be said of Gene, who, as Tara learned at one of her psychology classes, suffered from a severe case of bipolar disorder, which was getting worse by the day. On the bright side, while Tara was in England, he had started a line of medicinal oils with Faye. The business brought them local recognition and a lot of money. It also brought them a lot of interest from big companies. One of them offered Gene $3 million to buy the recipes. Gene declined the offer.

The meeting of the two Taras

Tara’s trips back to her family opened her eyes to a strange discovery: that there were now two Taras. One of them was the respected student of a prestigious university, and the other the lost daughter of a couple of Mormon survivalists. Gene and Faye loved the old Tara much more than the new one and they were trying to get her back at all costs. However, it was the new Tara who was really experiencing life, and the one who was starting to understand the world.

Among other things, the new Tara realized that she had been lied to all of her life about one fundamental thing: the real value of women. “I loved the fiery pages of Mary Wollstonecraft,” she writes, “but there was a single line written by John Stuart Mill that, when I read it, moved the world: ‘It is a subject on which nothing final can be known.’ The subject Mill had in mind was the nature of women. Mill claimed that women have been coaxed, cajoled, shoved and squashed into a series of feminine contortions for so many centuries, that it is now quite impossible to define their natural abilities or aspirations.”

Soon after, Tara began reading more about Mormonism, but this time she read with a much more open mindset. It didn’t take her long to realize that, compared to almost many other intellectual and religious movements, Mormonism was downright radical. She decided that she didn’t want to remain an adherent. Quite the opposite: she wanted out.

The triumph of the new Tara

One day, while Tara was doing research for her Ph.D. at Harvard (where she had won a visiting fellowship) her parents appeared at the doorstep of her dorm room. The reason was that Gene had had another one of his revelations. This time, the angels had told him that Tara’s soul had been taken away by Lucifer and that the only way for her to save herself from Hell was by accepting his blessing and by coming back to her hometown.

Everything Tara had worked for – as she writes at this crucial place in her memoir – had been to acquire for herself just one simple privilege: to see and experience more truths than those given to her by her father, and to use those truths to construct her own mind. “I had come to believe,” she goes on, “that the ability to evaluate many ideas, many histories, many points of view, was at the heart of what it means to self-create. If I yielded now, I would lose more than an argument. I would lose custody of my own mind. This was the price I was being asked to pay, I understood that now. What my father wanted to cast from me wasn’t a demon: it was me.”

This was a price she wasn’t interested in paying. Even though she suffered a mental breakdown in the process of severing the ties with her family, she eventually persevered and opted to finish her thesis instead. The breakthrough came one seemingly ordinary day, when, looking in the mirror, Tara realized that it was time for her to bury her old self in the past. “The decisions I made after that moment were not the ones (the old Tara) would have made,” she writes. “They were the choices of a changed person, a new self.” Tara says that different people might use different words to describe this new selfhood: transformation, metamorphosis, falsity, betrayal. She chooses to call it an education.

Final notes

There are really not enough superlatives to describe “Educated.” Alluring, courageous, heartbreaking, heartwarming, beautiful, propulsive, best-in-years, one-of-a-kind, fascinating, extraordinarily evocative – these have all been used by different reviewers. And all of them quite justly.

A unique memoir, “Educated” seems almost too strange to be believed. And yet, despite its singularity – as one Vogue reviewer has noted – the questions Tara Westover’s book poses are universal: “How much of ourselves should we give to those we love? And how much must we betray them to grow up?”

To quote the Sunday Times, “Educated” is a book “fit to stand alongside the great modern memoirs.”
