Meet Locky, the Lochness Monster.
He was born in Scotland in the frisky year of 1977, and he's part human - but also part plesiosaurus.
A great UMA brought to life by Kurt, who started at the centre this year!

Michelle Wants to Win
I have done three (3) river races and one (1) was the first day and half of the Duzi. I fell out of the boat at the first wear, but the rest of the race was fine. I had practiced in the swimming pool at home the day before, so I knew what to expect.
I battled walking up the steep hill on the Portage and the Portage before. It was very muddy but I managed to make it with some help from my Dad鈥檚 friend. I was able to help my dad carry the heavy boat on my shoulder but I made it to the finish. When we got home, I was able to get a good night鈥檚 sleep .
They say teamwork makes the dream work. Never give up!

Galactic Gala: A Champion in the Making
I was once practicing for the swimming gala. I was swimming well. I was doing 4 laps of 100m. The swimming strokes I did were butterfly and breaststroke.
At the actual gala, I got bronze, silver and gold.

Coldplay: Music of the Spheres
Tumblr media
Chris Martins is the front man of Coldplay.
In my eyes, Chris Martin is a good guy. He went back to the studio and recorded a new album - called Music of the Spheres.
Coldplay is my favourite band. I especially like the drum solos in the songs. Christ Martins' vocals are impressive. He is also a good songwriter. Higher Power is my favourite song of Coldplay.
I would like to see Coldplay in a concert one day. I absolutely adore music.

Sometimes when I hear music, I imagine how the music would look, how the atmosphere changes, how my moods come to life.
Today, the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra came to hold a tiny concert in our hall. It was only about thirty minutes long, but for those fleeting, beautiful thirty minutes, my imagination went into full bloom.
When they began, their first song was the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Immediately, the room seemed to fill with the ocean itself. I was immersed in the salty water, the sun wavering through the slow waves, the beams of light dancing like spotlights across the orchestra. Sharks swarmed around us, the waves crashed against the roof, seahorses bounded across my eyes and jellyfish of all kinds floated above me - catching the light, glowing vivid pinks, oranges, blues and whites. Each pluck of the strings, each gust of air bursting from the cold metal, each drumroll... glistening bubbles seemed to float to the top, bursting when they reached the surface, instead of notes.
Then, they played Lord of the Dance.
The ocean seemed to pour itself out the windows and the doors, draining itself from the room - emptying the space. Suddenly, a lush, dark green forest sprouted from the tiles, cracking them - as if they were erupting from the ground below and breaking through the building's foundation. Flowers, roses, peonies, sunflowers, covered the crevices between the walls, oak trees and canopies intertwined like lace over us - small vines wrapping themselves around the legs of our plastic chairs. I was surrounded by a forest that seemed as ancient as time itself, grass covering the ground and moss staining the barks and branches of the trees.
The Pink Panther theme song came next.
Pink crystals and precious jewels took over the room, and I was underground in a cold, dark mine. The only light was the crystals illuminating the air, glowing deep, rich colours like ruby, amethyst, emerald and turquoise.
When they played the more modern, popular songs like Can't Stop the Feeling, Happy and Uptown Funk - big, golden stars burst through the ceiling, landing like meteorites in front of me. The notes seemed to visibly sparkle, and the room turned into a night sky with purple and pink clouds misting up the floor.
After all was played, said and done, the hall seemed to fade back into vision. Back was the boring tiles, the cream walls.
Music to me is an art, a visual experience as well as an auditory experience. I cannot tame my imagination, nor reel in my emotions when I hear music.
It's both a blessing, and could be considered a curse.

Robert's Rugby
I love Rugby and I used to play when I was much younger. I watch it on TV.
At the Rugby Club, I once went to the stadium as a little boy to see the Sharks play and I played at half time.
Sometimes I see my old coach, Paul, when I go running with my dad at the fields.

Michael's Knowledge
When I was a little kid, I used to watch my brother play this one video game on our PlayStation 2 called Shellshock Nam 67, it was one of the first mediums in which I learned about the Vietnam War(1965-1975) It was by no means for the faint of heart though. There is this one book that delves into the science behind practical special effects in movies and television shows, I would absolutely love to get it, even if the information is somewhat dated, because the book was published in 1998, it discusses movie effects including costumes, makeup, puppets, prosthetics, animatronics and even stop motion, stop motion is when they take a photo of an object one photo at a time and each photo shows the object moving slowly in a pattern, its easier to explain if I was able to show a YouTube video that visually demonstrated it though.

Welcome to the Shahumna Centre, where anything can happen...
Tumblr media
Firstly, I must apologise.
In the midst of all our antics, where we may have possibly set fire to kitchen refrigerator, we may have gotten too far ahead to introduce ourselves.
I know, I know. What's the point of the seeing our blog if you don't know a smidgen on who we are, but here we are now.
The Autistic Adults of the Shahumna Centre.
We are quiet, but our actions speak louder than any of our words - we are mischievous, we are creative. If we aren't annoying Michelle with Barney's There Are Seven Days song, or having a blast coming up with things that start with "x" (and I must disappoint you, a "Xebra" is not one of them) - then we are individuals pursuing success and happiness... trying to live an honest, good life with the lemons life has pelted us with.
As a newcomer to the Shahumna Centre, I shall present to you my fellow peers and students.
First off, there's Ash - the main man in charge. He has everything under control, even if his shoulders carry the weight of a thousand pounds at most the height of 5"8.
Delani? He's a facilitator. He wears scrubs like a doctor. I don't know why to be exact, but I won't ask. I feel like he'll tell me a sketchy story. It's just a hunch, even if he's a great guy.
Jay P's also a facilitator. He's taller than all of us, and sometimes, I feel like I'm staring down the beanstalk that Jack climbed to meet the Giant. However, Jay P has a kinder smile than a beanstalk - does a beanstalk even have a smile? No. So yeah, he technically does still have a kinder smile than a beanstalk.
For the students:
Michelle and Robert - two sinister siblings who have it out for each other. Robert always seems to have a ninja chasing him, the way he fights the air. Michelle has a career set for herself in baking, definitely. That's if she doesn't bake Robert into a pie first.
Kaveer and Thabiso - Kaveer is quiet, and seems more like a pacifist more than anything. He does laugh a lot. I guess he's a naturally giddy person? Thabiso, on the other hand, expresses himself through many hand signals forming into explosions and a lot of "YOU FIRED"... He's cool, if I push back the bloodthirsty feeling I've got from him from time to time.
Wasim and Paul - Paul is a coffee larsonist. Sometimes Jay P seems to want to kill him, but I know that its just dramatics. Wasim is hands down the best typer in the whole centre, so fast and accurate my word. He's also pretty kind like Jay P too.
Bruce and Melita - Bruce hides in the bathroom all the time - don't ask. He's also Jay P's "son". Jay P faux adopted him. I kind of understand, but then, I don't. Melita is definitely ready to take on anything you give her. She gets frustrated when she feel's like she's not helping out. I actually like Melita a lot.
Luyanda - HE SLEEPS. THE MAN COULD SLEEP THROUGH THE ENTIRETY OF WORLD WAR III AND SOMEHOW END UP WAKING UP TWO YEARS AFTER ITS ENDED UNSCATHED AND UNAFFECTED.
So, if this little guide helps you, I'm glad. Thank you for supporting our blog.

What a (DUSI)...
Hi,
I have always wanted to do the Dusi with my dad and now I have started to train and I am still training. I run everyday and paddle on Tuesday and Thursday.
I have done my river proficiency test and I still have to do some river races but soon I will be ready for the Dusi...
So if you have a dream you want to come true, you need to work on it to make it come true. I believe I can do the Dusi, I am working on my dream and it will come true.
