I'm actually doing really well. I've continued my medical transition, and strengthened old friendships, and found wonderful new ones, and learned to be gentler with myself.

I've been focusing on things that make me happy. Unfortunately, this account just reminds me too much of being harassed. :( I'm not going to completely abandon it anytime soon - I'm actually working on a fic to post on AO3 in the next few days - but I’ve been trying not to log in very often.

But again, I’m doing really well. Things are going great for me! I’m just not posting about them on here.

Broke: Avoiding the translation for ‘Gege’ in the English dub and having San Lang call Xie Lian by his name

Woke: Not translating it because its used as a proper noun and not that difficult for the audience to figure out 

Bespoke:  Ignoring connotations and translating it to ‘Bro’, making the entire series 20X funnier

Things are going well for me. I know I haven't been as active recently, but it's because of good things! I'm on medication that's really helping with my chronic fatigue syndrome, and I've been doing a bunch of tasks like unpacking and paperwork and stuff.

Hiya! Would you say that theTGFC novel is rated 17+? I really want to read it but I’m still not sure on the rating, I’ve watched it on Netflix that said it was 12+ but now I’m looking everywhere else and it’s saying 17+.

TGCF the novel is indeed rated 17+!

You can actually check the ratings of all the MXTX works on SevenSea's website (left). It's also printed directly on the back of the novel's physical versions (right).

(Btw, you can also check the rating for other works on SevenSea's site, not just for MXTX's works, but for all the licenses that SevenSeas has acquired -- such as 2ha, Sha Po Lang, Qian Qiu, etc. if you're interested!)

The donghua is rated lower because not only does it cover a very tiny portion of the novel thus far -- so there isn't anything much to cut out yet -- but also because much of the violence/gore from the novel has been toned down. As a random example: the part where Xuanji kills a guy in ep 4 (?), the act itself is not shown as it fades to black in the donghua, but in the novel, she actually rips out the guy's skull.... The donghua is subject to very strict censorship due to Chinese law, so we can expect many aspects of the original story to be made more "PG" or "sanitized." (This will include the romance, thanks to even stricter new rules as of late regarding BL. :c)

There are a lot of concepts/depictions that may not be appropriate for younger audiences in the novel. This includes things like graphic self-harm, body horror, suicide, infanticide, as well as more implied things like allegorical sexual violence and subtextual discussions on sexual autonomy. Hence, why the rating is so high to begin with despite no "on-screen" sex scenes or the like.

I was rereading chapter 50 and a bit surprised and amused at the fact that Qi Rong is a better judge of character than Xie Lian when it comes to their judgement of Jun Wu:

The phrase Qi Rong used to describe Jun Wu is 假正经, which refers to someone who pretends to be all righteous, dignified and serious but actually isn’t. In contrast, here’s Xie Lian’s reaction when he learned that Qi Rong is trying to turn Pei Ming and Quan Yizhen against each other:

Xie Lian wrongly saw Jun Wu as just and reliable; Qi Rong rightly saw Jun Wu as a hypocrite. Xie Lian wouldn’t know that Jun Wu would in fact be secretly filled with glee and relief at any discord among his subordinates who’re becoming too powerful and thus constitute a threat to him. I don’t know if Qi Rong’s accurate judgement of Jun Wu is because he can’t comprehend how anyone can actually be a decent person and so always assumes the worst of everyone, or whether it’s because it’s easier for one rotten egg to recognize another…
