A different future…

When Inuyasha went into the meido to rescue Kagome, he didn’t have any thoughts about what might happen, other than needing to find her. And when he did find her, waiting for him in the darkness, he was hit all at once with a complicated mixture of love, relief and exhaustion. He never wanted to let her go again. Ever.

So when they came up through the well in modern Tokyo, and Kagome was embraced by her family, he was right there with her, hugging all of them too. He was overwhelmed by the emotions of what they’d just been through, and Mama Higurashi had always looked out for him. He trusted her. And he still couldn’t bear to let go of Kagome’s hand.

They slept together in her small pink bed that night, comforting each other with soft words and soft kisses, so happy that they had found each other in the darkness. So thankful, so relieved, so tired.

They slept, Kagome not fearing the darkness because how could she, with Inuyasha right there by her side, and Inuyasha content, because with his nose buried in her hair, he couldn’t lose her comforting scent.

It was only after breakfast the next day, when they decided to go to check on the others, that they found the well had closed. There would be no going back.

It was a difficult transition for both of them. They missed Shippou, Sango, Miroku and Kirara desperately, and there were many tears, Inuyasha’s silent and hidden, and Kagome’s loud and heartfelt.

Kagome had to adjust to the regular routine of highschool, still worrying about math tests, but worrying about Inuyasha more. They talked about what he might like to do, and whether he should try regular schooling, but the only place he felt comfortable was the shrine, with the Goshinboku and his Tessaiga nearby, and the small patch of trees behind the house all that was left of his forest.

So, after talking to Mama and Grandpa, they decided that perhaps Inuyasha could learn how to manage the shrine and take on a lot of the duties that were becoming too difficult for Grandpa.

Mama helped him to apply for some correspondence courses in business management, and no one was more surprised than himself when he found that he was actually okay at it. It was just a modern day way of protecting and providing for his pack, and Kagome was so proud of him, he couldn’t help wanting to please her by doing his best. When things got to much, he would go and sit in the Goshinboku and feel the wind, letting it carry his worries away.

As the months wore on, he became more comfortable in Kagome’s world. He found clothes that he was comfortable in, and learned to wear shoes, even though he preferred being barefoot. He learned how to fix things around the shrine, and taught himself how to carve omamori magatama beads to sell to visitors alongside the paper fortunes.

He still missed the forest, but he had a family who cared about him, and that made up for a lot. Kagome removed the subjugation beads from around his neck, and together they refashioned them into two bracelets, so they could wear one each - a memory of the past and a promise for the future.

Inuyasha got a few hints from Mama and Grandpa about how to ‘court’ Kagome, and on Saturday afternoons they often took the train to Harajuku Station, wandering up and down Taketshita Street, looking at all the different shops and people and pausing to buy snacks at Calbee Plus, or indulge Kagome’s sweet tooth at Santa Monica crepes.

In Harajuku, it was easy for Inuyasha to blend in - his differences here just made him fit in more. No one glanced twice at his golden eyes with slitted pupils, or long white hair. No one commented on his slightly longer arms or larger hands.

He wore a hat and kept his claws mostly out of sight, but he suspected even his ears wouldn’t have got a second glance here. It was amazing how strange humans could be - he’d spent his entire life being ostracised for being different, and here in this place, the more different you looked the better.

He was happy. Holding Kagome’s hand while she ate a strawberry banana crepe, thinking of their plans for the future while they strolled along. With Mama’s help, he would support her at the shrine while she studied nursing after high school. They’d already discussed getting married, and Jiji had given his blessing for them to build their own little house on the shrine grounds, for just Kagome and him, hidden in amongst the trees that reminded him of the forest where he had grown up.

His life had changed so much since he met her. Perhaps this was not the life he would have chosen. But this different future was infinitely better than anything he could have imagined. Because he had Kagome. And she had him. And that was worth everything.

Roulette Romance Category for Term 2 2024 will be Best InuParents Romance. This will be a category for both Fanart and Fanfiction.

For Fanfiction, it will be defined as: Stories that have developed a believable romance between Inu no Taisho and Izayoi (aka Inuyasha's parents). "Believable" is subjective, and it is up to those nominating/voting to draw their own line on that quantifier and vote their "Best". This includes canon universe and AU/AR settings.

For Fanart, it will be defined as: Any romantic depiction of Inu no Taisho and Izayoi (aka Inuyasha's parents).

The original Best Romance categories will remain, so all other pairings, including LGBTQ+, can be nominated into that category. All other pairings will be up for voting again next term.

The voting period is now in session! You will need to sign into Google in order to vote, and you will be allowed one vote per category. Please note: we will be recording email addresses and media platform names to preserve the integrity of the voting process! The email addresses and votes will NOT be shared with anyone; it is simply to prevent voting anomalies. Please let us know if there are any issues!

At the end of the voting form, you will be asked if you would like to have a say in which Roulette categories will be featured next term. This is not required, but we wanted to further involve the community in how the awards are run.

In addition, since FC did not receive a lot of participation on our "Shipping Term" form, the mod-team has decided to add an additional Romance Roulette to both Fanart and Fanfiction. At the end of the Google Form, voters will have a chance to voice which pairing they would like to see represented in the next term. As seen with the regular roulette categories, pairings represented will change each term based on participation.
