Hetalia Writers Monthly – April 2021
A quick snippet for @hetalia-writers-monthly!
Theme: Spring Prompt: “No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.” Characters: Canada Words: 866
———
White, Red, and Green
The woman’s features blurred in front of his eyes, the deep lines etched on her skin smoothening down. Her dark eyes, wide with gratitude, shone like stars. Matthew anchored himself to their brightness and forced his tired, aching limbs to remain steady.
He didn’t know what the woman was saying, her words muted by the ringing in his ears. She was thanking him again, probably. Or maybe, inviting him in for a warm soup and dinner… a fierce pang of pain stabbed his stomach at the thought. He couldn’t recall the last time he had had anything to eat.
Still, Matthew forced his stiff lips into a small smile, ignoring the stinging that flared up as the movement jostled the small, half-healed cuts that littered his skin.
“You don’t have to thank me. I just did what I could, what I should have done. But I really must hurry home now.”
He didn’t wait for an answer before turning his back to the woman and walking away. His legs were threatening to buckle down under him, he wasn’t sure for how long he was going to last. The old woman would have worried, insisted to take care of him.
But she shouldn’t. There are people who will need her kindness far more than I’ll ever do.
He had to keep reminding himself of that. His hands and feet were thoroughly frozen, so cold he could no longer even feel the discomfort – a tired, primitive corner of his brain was still alarmed at the fact, urging him to go back to the warmth of the woman’s house and accept some moments of rest before setting off again.
Matthew swallowed down the urge and kept walking. He could afford to wait some more time – hours, even. No lasting harm would come to him. His people, instead…
His chest ached at the thought.
This is why I can’t stop and rest. Mr Raine’s roof has some leaks and with his bad back, he can’t do anything about it on his own. If it doesn’t get fixed…
The resources were stretching thin for everybody. Whatever Matthew could do to help, he had to. He should feel guilty for thinking even for a moment about his own discomfort, too – he wanted to, but that overwhelming weariness made him numb. Unable to concentrate on anything but putting one foot in front of the other.
Even that small task was becoming more and more taxing with each passing second. Matthew tried to quicken up his pace, only for the earth to tilt to a side under him. Black spots filled his vision.
No, not now! Just a bit longer…
He bent down and braced his hands against his knees, trying to breathe in deeply. The cold air scratched his throat and chest as if he had swallowed a jar of pins.
Just a moment. I’ll rest a moment, and then I’ll go.
At that point, it was more like a prayer than a resolution. The dizzy spell wasn’t lifting, Matthew’s ears were ringing even worse than earlier. He couldn’t even see the ground in front of him – just snow, snow-covered trees, and the white sky looming over him. They all blurred together in a single, bright mass. All he could feel was the cold slapping his cheeks and seeping into his bones.
Just like his people, Matthew didn’t have much more he could give.
He tried taking a deeper breath, but his lungs seemed to rebel against the searing cold. He found himself coughing, unable keep in the air he so desperately longed for. It wasn’t long before he had to bend down, his lungs throbbing.
His body swayed dangerously.
No. I can’t fall.
Somehow, just out of willpower, he didn’t.
Little by little, even the coughing died down, leaving in its wake Matthew’s thundering heart and a deep, penetrating ache inside his chest. Bitter, slimy mucus clogged up his throat and coated his mouth.
Matthew took an experimental shallow breath and spat down. He didn’t dare to raise his head for fear the dizziness would prove to be too much to handle.
Finally, the blurred mess in front of his eyes started to solidify into shapes. The white layer of snow was now spotted with a few drops of crimson. There was some sort of twisted beauty in that cruel contrast. White, the colour of ethereal purity – and that human-made red putting on display the truth hiding behind that marvellous and terrible spectacle.
A trick of nature.
Matthew almost wanted to chuckle at that.
But as he slowly raised his head, a second glimpse of colour caught his attention. He froze in the motion, his eyes focusing on an unexpected view.
Green.
For a moment, he couldn’t believe it. But there it was – an undeniably green blade of grass, boldly making its way out of the snow.
At that moment, everything faded away. The pain, the desperation, even the illness festering in his body – nothing mattered anymore. Nothing but what the sight in front of his eyes meant.
The wave of relief that washed over Matthew felt almost warm.
Spring is coming.
For another year, they were going to beat the winter.

His World
Wrote this little thing for @hetalia-writers-monthly. It features the unofficial personalization of Sápmi, that @saltlakris has made a great OC for, so check her out if you want to know more about him!
Theme: Spring
Promt: Hope
Words: 550
Summary: Young Sápmi experiences spring for the first time.
———
The world he knew was cold.
It was not a vicious cold though, no. He loved the snow, and the ice upon the lakes. He felt harmony when it surrounded him, content. The humans seemed to fear it, strangely, but he didn’t.
There was a dull memory inside of him, just a whisper, of how he woke up once, lying on the snow as if it was a gentle bed. The lights had shone down on him, like saying hello and goodbye at the same time. They still visited frequently and he would gaze up at them all night, a strange melancholy building up. He had realized soon that he could not talk to them, that a demand of an explanation would go unanswered. He belonged to another world now.
He couldn’t tell how long he was with them, the humans. That memory felt so deep, so long ago, but he couldn’t remember much previous to the last weeks. He knew there was a time before they took him in, gave him a name. He was different before, and he had felt different. Something had changed. He now experienced what the humans called emotions.
There were a few he knew already, like fear or surprise. Happiness when the sunlight caressed his skin, and the wind rustled through his hair. He laughed with the young ones, something he had never done before, and played with them and the reindeers. They got jealous at how trusting the animals were of him, recognizing that he belonged more to them than the humans. He had even felt pride at the mention of a beloved homeland, although the reason for this was not clear to him. There were many more, and somehow he wished to know them all.
He was content with his life. He enjoyed the company of the humans, started to crave the care they gave to him. He still loved the nature, and it felt like it loved him back, always had. Yet still, something started to creep up, a question that made him know sorrow. Will things ever change? Confusion came soon after. Why would it bother him if they didn’t? He liked the world he knew. It should have been enough.
Things stayed the same for days, weeks. And then they changed. It was a slow change, so slow he didn’t notice at first. The air got warmer, gentler. So warm that the cold gave way and retreated to the mountains and caves, leaving something else with him.
He soon found out that the humans called this new world spring. Although happy, they seemed quite unperturbed. Their world had changed and they stayed the same. But he didn’t.
For the first time he knew the feeling of grass beneath his bare feet, the smell and look of flowers, the sound of buzzing insects. He could watch fish swimming in clear rivers and birds hop between green leaves. In some nights, even the stars came down to relish this new world. And he would have done the same just to know its beauty and warmth, even just for one day.
Spring taught him that his world was a changing one. And it made him know a feeling that excited every nerve of his body, that brought bliss and happiness with it.
Hope.

Hetalia Writers Monthly – January 2021
A last-minute snippet for @hetalia-writers-monthly
Theme: Turning Over a New Leaf Prompt: Hesitation Characters:  England and Canada Words: 1,350
———
In Time of Need
The boy was small.
That was the only thing England could think as he stared at the wide lilac eyes looking up at him, gleaming with a mixture of apprehension and timid hope.
If France could have heard his thoughts, he would have scoffed and rolled his eyes with that practised air of superiority of his. “Of course he’s small, how were you thinking he would be? He’s just a young colony!”
And England knew all about that – he was already taking care of another young colony, after all. However, America’s exuberance and boundless energy often made him look bigger than he actually was, bigger than life itself.
The child standing in front of England, instead, had nothing like that. He was probably just a bit thinner than America – but the way hunched his shoulders and neck as if to protect himself made him look even smaller. There was a vulnerability about him that plummeted to the bottom of England’s stomach.
He recognized that look with painful clarity. That trembling hesitance, that bottomless neediness born out of loneliness.
…A corner of his mind wondered if older personifications had ever recognized that look in him, in spite of how hard he had tried to hide it behind a façade of cheekiness.
Good Lord, what am I even going to do about him?
He didn’t know. He couldn’t. One thing was America, with his brightness and confidence, but that child who had already been so hurt… England’s head was spinning. There was no way he could deal with something like that.
…But the child was still in front of him, waiting for his reaction. A small child that shouldn’t have known hesitation, the pain of rejection.
Swallowing around the lump in his throat, England forced his stiff lips into a smile and extended his right hand towards the child.
“I was serious,” he declared with much more confidence than he actually felt, “From now on, you’re going to be part of my family. Come with me.”
The child’s entire face opened in a smile of such blinding warmth that England’s heart constricted.
“Thank you, Mr England! I won’t make you regret this.”
His fingers slipped inside England’s hand, so small and fragile that England almost wanted to scream. He didn’t know what he was doing. How could he, when nobody had ever shown him what he was supposed to?
Hopefully, this entire situation will improve quickly.

Characters: Prussia and Poland
Theme: Oath for @hetalia-writers-monthly
Summary: Prussia holds a long grudge for a humiliation done years ago.
Words: 2,000
——————————
The Teutonic Knights was thinking of a number of oaths and insults as he kneeled. He knew that if the Grand Master could hear what he was thinking he would be scolded for it, and forced to copy manuscripts until his hands hurt.
He knew that the Lord knew what he thought, but he felt like He would understand this anger. It was a travesty that a holy knight should be forced to kneel in front of his enemy. It had taken a lot of cajoling to get the Teutonic Knights to even learn the correct ceremony.
After the loss at Tannenburg, there had been no choice. He could still feel the edge of Lithuania’s blade under his chin, and the thought made his blood boil. It had been a dirty trick, and there was no honor in winning like that.

moving january
a/n: the moon, the new year, and the family moving in circles. i had to answer. @hetalia-writers-monthly
summary: got to stop spinning  characters: nyo!america, aph!canada, aph!france, aph!england  word count: 2,738 tw: PTSD
The moon is a waning crescent, and from the height of the skyline the stars are so bright she feels she could reach out and touch them. For now, the nation contents herself with balancing like a cat on the roof, barely minding the cold against her bare feet  where she crouches on the now cleared edge. Humming an old song from ‘37 to herself, she doesn’t move at the window opening behind her. The boy with violet eyes moves up beside her form.
“You’re pretty,” she says, still staring at the night sky. It had stopped snowing hours ago, covering the grasslands with a dusting of snow that reminds America of powdered sugar.
“Many thanks,” Canada responds.
Val Marie was a favorite. A  semi-remote space for camping and other activities, but for this year, it was the family’s spot. A cozy winter cabin sat on an expanse of land and sky. The corner of her mouth twitches into a smile.
Tucking a lock of hair behind her ear, America exhales a breath of air that clouds and then disappears into the night. “You can say I’m pretty.”
Matthew hums. “I could.”

House of Memories
Author’s note: Yeet, writing another thing at the last minute for @hetalia-writers-monthly . This is Nationverse, and takes place in the same timeline? universe? as Too Old For This. Might make this stuff into a series. This is based on the quote prompt “We grew up together. You just never noticed I existed”
Word count: 710
Sweden grunted as he shoved his shoulder against the door. The hinges made an agonising groan from years of disuse, but it slowly dislodged itself from the frame and swung open. He flicked the torch on, and could feel Norway’s breath on his neck as they both peered down the narrow staircase. The torch’s light barely illuminated the floor at the bottom, obscured by cobwebs and swirling dust.
The stairs creaked, and Sweden absently worried that they might give way, his shoulders tensing. He hadn’t been down to the storage room in years, but as soon as he stepped off the lowest step a familiar sense of calm encased him. He couldn’t remember when it had fallen out of use and become nothing more than a space to store once treasured possessions. Many years ago, this room had been a library, shelves aching with the weight of ancient tomes. The shelves were still there, as were the books, but over they years they had become covered with cobwebs. Sweden wiped his finger over a bookcase as he passed, leaving a clean line in the thick film of dust.

Hetalia Writers Monthly – December Fill
I wrote this snippet for @hetalia-writers-monthly. It’s really short because I barely had any time, but this prompt was perfect for the NA brothers. I couldn’t resist.
Theme: Friend or Foe Prompt: “We grew up together. You just never noticed I existed” —Shauna Philip Characters: Canada and America (Gen) Word Count: 724
———
Insignificant
They both lay sprawled over their backs, the mattress slightly sunk under their weight but still soft. Above them, a gentle rain tapped over the cabin’s wooden roof, the sound as soothing as Alfred’s rhythmic breathing next to him. Matthew’s eyes were starting to slide closed, the stress of the long day finally melting away from his stiff muscles.
The warmth enveloped him, so cozy and—
“You know, Mattie, this reminds me a lot of when I was a kid.”
Too groggy for anything else, Matthew answered with a muted hum of agreement. It was all his brother needed.
“I never really liked the rain, back then. It’s too noisy, you know? I mean, not like this, but just—” Alfred made a wide gesture with his arm and then let it fall on his side with a soft thump. “Then it gets worse and bring thunderstorms. So, even if it was just a slight drizzle, I couldn’t fall asleep because I didn’t want to be taken by surprise and waken up by a thunder or something.”
A small smile blossomed over Matthew’s lips at the recollection. Being waken up by the hurried thumping of small feet over the wooden floor, having his mattress dip under the added weight as Alfred threw himself at it. Blankets shifting as a small body crawled under them. Then, hot breath blowing against his ear as Alfred would whisper, “Mattie, are you awake?”. And that would be the start of a night spent together. While Matthew had never minded rainstorms, the warmth and weight of his brother’s body against his side had always been pleasant. A special treat, almost.
“But it wasn’t so bad when Arthur was there. He would let me sleep in his own bed and then tell me stories… I remember he once made up one about a fairy that gathered power from thunder and lighting, and used it for… uh, actually, I don’t know. Something good, I guess, I mean, given—”
“She directed lighting to the surface of earth. It would give enough energy to make plants and vegetation grow. And thunders were the way of the Earth to thank the fairy and let her know her gift had been received,” Matthew finished for him, barely suppressing a yawn.
That had been a nice story. Arthur had been so much better than him at telling it, of course, depicting lighting and thunder with vivid words that had kept Matthew wide awake… but that had been in the past. Now, Matthew could feel himself slipping into a slumber, his eyelids fluttering closed and his perceptions slowly fading…
Until the mattress dipped abruptly as Alfred turned on his side to face him.
“Woah, how did you know that? Did Arthur tell you the same story some other time?”
Matthew’s entire body stiffened against his will. With the alertness washing over him like a cold shower, he opened his eyes and trained them on his brother’s expressive face.
“…What do you mean? I was there with you, Al.”
“Wow, for real? …Uh. That’s odd, I don’t remember that. I thought it was just Arthur and I. Funny what you can forget.”
Matthew didn’t know what hurt more: his brother’s words, or the earnest confusion on his face that screamed how much he didn’t see anything wrong in them. For Alfred, they were just an innocent observation.
And maybe, they truly were. The bitterness clawing at Matthew’s chest was surely an overreaction – it had been so long since then, after all. How could he demand Alfred to recall?
…Even if Matthew did.
He supposed he could have borne it better if it had been only that one time. Yet, it was always like that with Alfred. The small, apparently inconsequential snippets he had left behind painted a much bigger, darker picture – a picture in which Matthew was far too often pushed aside. Nothing more than an unwelcome ghost.
Matthew rolled on his side, turning his back to Alfred.
“…Yeah, funny indeed.” Honed by years of practice, his voice didn’t tremble. “Goodnight, Al.”
But even as his brother’s soft snoring filled his ears, Matthew’s eyes stayed wide open, staring blindly in the dark. A deep weariness inside him begged for the release of sleep. Yet, the cold that had seeped into his bones left no space for comfort.
