The burning leaves thing is just a ritual he does, according to Jared Bush. He made it up as a way to calm his anxieties and feel in control. He technically doesn't even need the sand, since he is capable of involuntary visions as well. The sand seems to be necessary in order to project the visions outwardly, allowing others to see them, and also to produce tablets.
My guess is that Bruno had an involuntary vision the moment he touched his doorknob. Perhaps he saw himself inside his tower, eyes glowing and surrounded by swirling sand, before he even opened the door and saw all the sand awaiting him inside.
I have one single thing to say about Encanto.

Animal connection? Showed itself immediately. Being strong? Was obvious from the door, and would've become apparent anyways. I understand Bruno is considered superstitious so it might just be preference, but "Oh it looks like a prophetic gift? Obviously you have to have a circle of sand and burning leaves."
