“Hey, I get it. I do.” She said. Sometimes someone didn’t need words of encouragement or praise or tough love. Sometimes a person just needed someone to know they weren’t alone in their things. None of them had to be alone in their things. Dawn had learned that from Hank, as much as he may of not known it. She was dealing, and failing miserably, with dealing with the senseless death of her mother. Hank helped her share her grief and vice versa.
Speaking of, Dawn’s breath caught in her throat as he brought up Hank. Pot calling kettle black, she did her best sometimes not to try and bring up Hank. “He, er-” She paused for a moment, her lips turning to thin lines as she folded her arms and glanced to the ground before looking back over to Roy. “He didn’t make it out of Washington.” She admitted softly.
Tumblr media
“Oh my god- I’m such a- i’m so sorry Dawn.” Roy said. He knew firsthand how difficult it was to lose someone you love in the field, especially when they were an intertwined as Hawk and Dove were. And of course with all of Roy’s time off from his friends during his trip following the League of Assassins, he has missed all of this. He had missed a lot.
He wrapped an arm around here, more for the comfort than anything else. He was never good at verbally comforting someone, but physical touch, he could do. That was easy.

“Come on!” Roy said in surprise as he whirled around. “Don’t sneak up! How did you- I had sensors and stuff set up.” Roy said, looking past Dinah into the doorway. They were all disabled, because of course they were. “What’s going on? is everything okay?”

@harperarcher
Dinah didn’t announce her presence right away, watching him slowly for a moment. She rubbed her lips together before she spoke, knowing that Roy was dealing with a lot. Maybe it was a way so she didn’t have to continue dealing with her own mess but she sure as hell couldn’t leave him out in the ocean to drown. She was barely keeping her head above water herself but that didn’t matter. “Hey, think you can get a babysitter tonight?” She finally called out to him, leaning on the doorway.

“You’re not nearly as cute as your kid is, sorry. Tía Mia mode activated and with that comes the need to buy her cute shit. I’ve never had a whole niece to spoil rotten, let me live.” Mia had every intention to spoil Lian as much as Roy would allow it; her own family growing up had been a mess on good days, and the family Mia found was made all the more important for that reason. Her time as a little girl had been horrible and Mia wished she remembered less than she did, and she wanted to contribute towards giving Lian the best possible childhood this family could give her. “Eres tan asqueroso,” she said around a laugh, aiming a swat towards his shoulder. “Is that what years of putting your body through hell sounds like? Ugh, I am not looking forward to that in my future.” She scrunched up her nose, shaking her head. “Did you just call me a newbie?”
“I haven’t had a niece either. Lots in common.” Roy muttered. He wasn’t mad that Lian was getting every ounce of attention over him, but it was strange how so many people were suddenly acting different. People who didn’t even bother to give him the time of day before were suddenly fawning over Lian. Not Mia; she was as close to an aunt as they were going to get, but other people. Made Roy all the more eager to get out of here.
“Yeah. Comparatively, you are newer to archery than I am. Not hating; just a fact.” Roy shrugged. “And I’m from Arizona, and I grew up with Ollie. I know exactly what you’re saying. We can all say things, Mia.”  Roy said, making a displeased face. “Pick a target already.”

There was a moment suspended between them, one where Donna bit down on her bottom lip, prepared to go through the standard round of questioning again. How could she blame them? To come back from the dead was an unusual experience – and it was only natural to be cautious of such a thing – but there was no questioning from Roy. Only that beat, awful and lingering, and then a rush of activity, ending with her being swept into an embrace that she hadn’t felt in such a long time. She laughed, thick with tears, and curled into it like she had never been gone, tucking her face against his hair and breathing slowly. She wanted to commit these moments to memory, these shining moments of love in amongst what had been some of the worst times of her life - new and old.
Donna shifted to stroke a hand through his hair, soothing and calming. “I know, honey. It’s a lot to explain,” she murmured against his temple, quite unwilling to let go yet. She had missed Roy - all of the Titans really - and to hold him in this moment was a treasure she hadn’t ever been able to elucidate before. “I can explain soon. Just…I missed you.” She added quietly.
Eventually, after a moment longer, she stepped back, holding him out at arm’s length to assess him. “Are you taking care of yourself?” Donna asked, head canted with mild concern. And then her gaze slid over the rest of the room and her countenance softened again. “And it looks like you have news far greater than mine could ever be,” she added, even as her voice warmed at the mere glimpse of the baby sleeping quietly in the room with them.
Tumblr media
Roy cupped the back of her head as he swayed her back and forth. This felt...right. Finally, after all this time, Roy felt right. When she had died, what seemed like eons ago now, something in him went missing. And they weren’t close then- Roy was off chasing down the League of Assassins, so when he finally did get the news, it was months later. And it never felt quite real. Maybe it was his Navajo heritage kicking in, that death and birth were both part of a larger cycle. And showing too much emotion could tie the spirit down. Or maybe he just didn’t want to think about it too much. If he threw himself into his work, ignoring any calls that came, it wouldn’t be real. But it was real, and she was gone. And now she’s back.
Donna pulled away- too quickly- and Roy looked at her. She looked, okay. Maybe a little nervous, a little shaken up, but still the same girl he fell in love with all those years ago. “Take your time, I have all the time in the world for you.” Roy said with a grin.
“Yes, yes. Not doing anything fun.” Roy held his arms out, as if to get a full assessment, before what Donna was referring to. Roy turned around a caught sight of Lian who was, miraculously, still fast asleep. “I mean- huh.” Roy said, turning back around to face Donna. “Yeah. Lots of changes.” Donna could put 2 and 2 together. Roy had no brothers or sisters that he would be babysitting for, no close friends with kids, no reason to pull an Ollie an adopt one... “I feel like both pieces of news are equally important. I mean, you somehow beat death, and I- have a kid now.”

ravaging-rose:
“Surviving and thrivng,” Rose added, that grin she offered a little sharp. “See, you’ve got this in the bag. Throw in a few wrenches and she’ll be happy as can be.”  Rose re-situated the toddler in her arms so that she was more comortably sat on her hip, seemingly content to hold her for however long was allowed by the child in question or by her father. Probably moreso the former, Rose had never been good at listening to Roy Harper. “Rose is actually my middle name,” she comented back with a roll of the eye. “I tricked you many times. Not like it was hard.” A playful jab, still with that wicked-sharp grin. “I was fourteen and had no desire to be there for the first few months. I absolutely gave you the slip in your own tower. I was always kinda surprised you never put it together, you’d lock the door and I’d come waltzing into the Tower a few hours later with no question.”
“Firstname Rosalind Wilson! You infuriate me.” Roy said, with no bite in his voice whatsoever. “Of course I knew you snuck out. You’re good at being a super sneaky assassin-type, but I had horrible sleep habits.” Roy explained. “What was I gonna do, tell you that you couldn’t? Wrestle you to the ground? Nope.”
Many of those times, when Roy woke up alone in the room, he knew exactly what was going on. He’d given Ollie the slip enough times to know that sometimes, a kid just need to blow off some steam. And Rose had so much shit going on, it was a small miracle she was there in the first place. Who cares if she needed some time to do her own thing. “I honestly, did not care that much. You’re grown.”

Dawn offered a sympathetic smile. “You want to talk about it?” She didn’t want to pry but she liked to think that when she was with the Titans, she acted as a confidant to many of them. She was sure she should of been a counsellor if being a ballerina and vigilante didn’t work out for her.
“Hey, come on, we dress up and punch people. I think we deserve to get a little misfortune.” She humored lightly before placing her hand on top of his as he went to pick up another piece. “But burying it any deeper won’t make any of it go away. I’m here for you Roy. Like before. Like always.” Though Dawn left the Titans a couple of years ago, she liked to think they knew they could turn to her in their time of need.
Tumblr media
“Nah. I’m all good. Just a lot going on at once? A lot of balls to keep juggling.” Roy shrugged his shoulders as he continued tinkering. As much as he would love to burden his fellow Titan with what bullshit he was dealing with, he had do desire to drudge through his conscience.
“Enough about me. Where’s your other half? I thought you two were joined at the hip by now.” Roy said, setting his tools down so he could look at Dawn properly. Even though Roy didn’t truly remember most of his time on the Titans, he remembered Dawn. And Titans usually had a nasty habit of sticking together long after the group dissolves.

.
Roy Harper. Donna had spotted his name on the list she had been making, nostalgia blossoming dawn-warm in her chest, and had immediately known she had to see him. It was evening by the time she had been able to carve out the time to go see him - turns out being dead then alive came with a lot more admin than anyone would expect - and the silver-sweet moonlight was just beginning to spill into the hallways that Donna made her way through, tracing the path to the garage with ease. She was already getting used to this place.
She made sure her approach was audible, not wanting to surprise him, but the sight that greeted her as she rounded the doorway surprised her instead. A child curled up, sleeping peacefully, and Roy packing away what looked to be like everything he had brought with him. She exhaled, slow and considering, and kept her distance, hovering in the doorway. Did she belong here? In these people’s lives? Or had everything moved on so irrevocably in the time she had been gone? Still, she managed to summon a quiet smile, something tinged with wistful melancholy.
“We always did just seem to pass each other by, hm? Ships in the night,” she murmured, matching his volume with ease, her own voice night-air crisp.
Tumblr media
Roy turned around as quickly as he could at the sound of Donna’s voice. It’s a voice that had lived in his dreams for what seemed like every waking moment since she died. He shouldn’t be surprised; stranger things have happened to the Titans. But there was an air of finality in Donna’s death. Not just the end of her life, but the end of an era in the Titans. An era of comradery and friendship and ease with each other that they never seemed to regain. Roy assumed if someone from the original 5 were going to die, it was going to be him. Not Donna, with her huge brown eyes that crinkled on the edges when Roy made her laugh hard enough, and the way she always sit and watch Roy practice, talking about the archers she knew back on Themyscira, and how much life she had. And she was gone. And Roy was also gone.
Roy dropped the wrench he was holding, glad the table underneath was wooden, and muffled the sound. Roy felt like he was in a dream, the way the silence of the night seemed to leak into every crevice of the room, how hyper aware he was of the last time he shaved which was really way too long ago- and how Donna looked perfect. As always. From her place in the doorway, Roy stared at her, not knowing what to say.
“I- uh.” Roy said, turning fully around. “I thought you were- Donna, where have-” Roy cut himself off as he gave into his instinct and closed the few feet in between them in record speed, embracing her in a tight hug, burying his head into her shoulder. He knew he should have asked her questions first; grilled her to make sure she was who she said to be. But Roy was willing to be tricked, if it meant having a few minutes of happiness for himself.

“Slade is also a dad,” Rose commented, rolling her eye in a mirror to Roy. “Hey, I mean, at least come away with this: you will absolutely be a better father than mine and I am …alive. I am alive and made it to twenty-eight.” That was the best she could say for that. “I mean, he had shit all to do with the first fourteen years but hey.” Rose shrugged, an easy smile back in place. “You’re gonna do great. She seems happy and shit and that’s at least half the battle. You’ve got this, and you’ve got one hell of a village behind you to help along the way.” Herself included, considering her self-appointed position as Aunt Rose. “Do we really count that as babysitting? And uh, not sure if you want to include that in your track record. If my memory serves correctly I absolutely gave you the slip at least a few times, some of which you were never aware of.”
“We both have dads.” Roy said solemnly, as if an extremely profound discovery. "I mean, we both made it farther than we thought possible. We’re doing great on that front. Living, and all of that.” Roy said, rambling on. He found it easy to talk to Rose, maybe since she was one of the few people that never treated him delicately when talking about his past. Rose was there for most of it, hell, she was an active participant in most of it. “I mean, she’s 3. Not a lot to keep her happy. Car keys. Funny noise. Both of which I can provide.”
Roy looked as shocked as he could, “Rosealyn Middlename Wilson, you.... you tricked me? In all my foolish naivete in thinking you were a honest woman... giving me the slip? In my own tower?” Roy’s breath shuddered as if he were going to start crying. “It all makes sense. How you would walk into the room you were supposed to be locked in. It’s all clicked in my head. I’m like fucking Batman over here with this detective sh-stuff.”

“I’m not but Hank is.” She said as she offered a smile as she adjusted his positioning. “I don’t know much but I know when someone is stuck.” She was gentle in her approach, much more so in contrast to her partner. Where Hank was considered a one man army, Dawn was considered to be peaceful. However, one should never confused peace with pacifism.
“As much fun as that sounds, I already work with the outreach and the medical bay. I’m not a doctor but I treated enough wounds from Hank and the Titans to know what I’m doing.” She watched him for a moment as she folded her arms. “How are you holding up?”
Tumblr media
“In many ways.” Roy muttered to himself. Roy continued to work on the engine, his mind in a million different places at once. This engine should have been something easy,  something he’s done over and over, but instead, he’s been stuck on the same issue for the past hour-ish.
“With what, specifically? I constantly have shit going on. The constant threats to my health keep me kicking.” Roy said, sliding the completed part over to grab another. This was something smaller, mainly a piece he’d been working on for fun over any real importance to the Nomad cause.

Wouldn’t it be Nice
@lunarwondcr
Roy was sorting through the table in the garage, making sure he took whatever belonged to him in the first place. It wasn’t super hard to sort through his own worn, red paint-covered tools, and the shiny new ones provided by the Mousehole, but he didn’t realize how much of his stuff had accumulated in the almost-year that he’s been here. And stability was foreign to Roy. He hated routine. Staying in one place too long made him restless. Made him want to pack a car and go drive and just see where he ended up. But now, that was infinitely harder.
Lian deserved the stability that Roy had never truly gotten. She deserved one house for most of her childhood, and not being shuffled around to various foster dads. And stability was not going to found in an old castle surrounded by superheroes, no matter how hard Roy tried. So, he was leaving, moving to a small apartment he found close by, only telling the higher ups to avoid awkward conversations. The late hour made Roy hyper-aware of every sound the tools made, and Lian’s quiet breaths as she snoozed close by. It also made him aware of the footsteps coming towards the garage.
“Garage’s closed, sorry.” Roy said quiet enough to not wake Lian, but loud enough to make his voice heard, still packing as he talked.

“I wasn’t aware you were a mechanic.” Roy said, keeping his arm in place as Dawn’s hands crept over his. He was used to her touchy-feely nature after so much time was spent together on the Titans, so it wasn’t a huge shock to his system.
“Put that bolt in- yeah that might work.” Roy mumbled, trying it the way she suggested, mildly irritated that it worked instantly. “You looking for work? Because you can have his job.”
Tumblr media
Dawn glanced over at the other as she looked at what they were working on. She mainly remained quiet, as she continued to watch them for a moment. “You know, if you just do this, it might work.” She suggested as she approached them. “May I?” She asked as she used two of her hands to guide their arm, adjusting their position slightly. “Try it that way.”

“Yes, like the trucker hat,” he answered. “Don’t you put this kid in a fuckin’ suit. I trained enough of the Bat’s child soldiers, no thanks to him.” If he hadn’t be a fucking moron, maybe he would have sent the kids to him of his own volition. Ted had gotten to them anyway, but the fact still remained that Ted had trained Clark and Dinah and Barry and so many others. But hey, maybe there was a reason that Rogues still ran around Gotham. “She deserves to be a little girl, doesn’t she?”
He nodded. “I agree on that point. Though, on the other hand, there’s probably no place functionally safer. So it’s up to you, kid. But you’re right about your priorities right now. This little girl is more important than the job. That’s just how it goes.”
Tumblr media
“Believe me, I’ve had to work with those same ‘Bat Child Soldiers’, she’s hopefully never going pick up a weapon.” Roy gazed at her, her light brown eyes catching his for a second before turning back into Ted’s chest. “I’m trying not to live through her, and she can do whatever she wants, but no way is she running around in spandex before she can think for herself.”
“I’ve already started looking for places, and trying to get my old job back with the mechanic shop. The whole... vigilante soldier thing isn’t incredibly appearing with more on the line that isn’t just my ass.” Before when the only consequence was Roy getting in trouble, he felt like he could do anything. Which maybe was not the safest way to live life, but it was the way he did. What else was to expected of a kid that was pushed into fighting crime when he was 13? Normal morals?

“I mean, I’d guess so. I don’t think this parenting thing is supposed to be easy.” Not from what she’d seen, in any case. “Hey, just saying. Apparently you did need some birth control advice like…three and some odd years ago.” The smile she offered there was cheeky, and she laughed a little with it. “She sure is cute, though. Glad you decided to play it risky or I wouldn’t be Auntie Rose.” She scrunched up her nose a little, sighing. “No, I’d advice against it. Though I actually did that, not my dad. Try to avoid the whole drugging her against her will thing, it tends to lead to psychosis. But yes, please do let me babysit whenever you need. You know I’d literally kill anyone that dared touch a single hair on her head, so she’d be more than safe with me.”
“Damn. Sucks to be me I guess.” Roy said. “Like, Ollie’s a dad. So it can’t be that hard.” Roy rolled his eyes. “Keep it coming. Get all your chuckles and giggles and hahas out while i’m in a good mood. And the entire time I was, you know,” Roy waggled his eyebrows, “I was like, I can’t wait to be the first guy in my friend group with a child. Really cannot wait for my jerk friends to get a load of this.”
“I trust you with her than I do myself. And you owe me for all the times I had to babysit you.” Not that Rose was that much younger than he was, or that he minded a whole lot. And it wasn’t as if they didn’t spend the night passing a bottle back and forth and ranting about parents to be mature adults.

“I think that’s something you’re gonna need to get used to. Like, I feel like 90% of people just lose their minds around cute little kids and wanna squish their cheeks and buy them shit.” Mia had definitely already collected a few little presents to give to her niece, bribes to get on her good side. “I’m working on exactly no missions and tasks, if it makes you feel better.” She was still benched, for…who only knew how long at this point. She’d already tried to ask Diana to lift it, but she’d been unsuccessful so far.  “That was super gross. Please don’t do that again.” She scrunched up her nose at the noise. She rolled her eyes at Speedy II, mumbling “okay old-timer” under her breath as she loosed the first arrow.
“Buy me shit instead.” Roy muttered under his breath. Lian was pretty cute, he had to admit. And he had 50% to do with that. “I benched myself. Poor Ollie having to be the only archer we got.” Roy shrugged, trying to loosen up his shoulders. It had been too long since he did this, and his upper body was sorely reminded him. The soreness did feel welcome after so long of not feeling it.
“What, this?” Roy cracked his neck loudly, to the other side. “Is that what you hate?” Roy cracked his shoulder. “This?” He cracked the other side. Being an annoying older brother was one facet of getting to know Mia that he tried so long not to think about. Too busy wallowing in his own self pity for years. “Whatever, newbie.”

… “I don’t think you’d be doing it right if you weren’t stressed. I mean, I’ve never been responsible for a whole ass baby for more than a few hours at a time but that’s my impression anyway.” Rose looked from Lian to Roy again, shifting the toddler’s weight on her hip just slightly for a more comfortable position. “Stress is the name of the game for the rest of your life. Next time, wrap it up, even if this cutie is absolutely worth all the stress.”  “I can give you a lot of advice on what not to do courtesy of the Wilson family. I’m good for that kind of advice, but you should still take it with a grain of salt. My mother was incredible but I was also raised in a brothel and…well, we all know who my dad is.” A bit of a grimace there, and a sigh. “But that’s all I’m good for. That and babysitting.”
“Good. So the feeling that I want to tear out m hair is good? Fantastic.” Roy said, looking at Lian, who turned her head to look at him; Roy mimicking the motion. “I don’t need birth control advice. Lian is birth control enough. I barely wanted kids in the first place.” Not to mention Roy wasn’t really in a good state of mind when he met Jade. Destructive, not wanting to think of any penalties, wanting to live each day like it was his last. Which really bit him in the ass now.
“So, I shouldn’t jab her eye out? Damn.” Roy shook his head. “Next thing you know you’ll be telling me not to chuck her on the streets if she ever messes up. Really blowing my mind here Rosalyn.” Roy said. “I know all you Wilsons. I’ll keep you on that babysitting list. I’m paranoid that someone’s gonna go after her.”

“The big secret is Roy, none of us know what we are doing. We are just…people, trying to do the best.” She said softly, watching his expression for a moment. “And the only way we get better is messing up. As much as you, Mia and even Ollie like to think I was this way all the time, the only way I learned was from my own mistakes. My own bruises. Ask Ted. The old man taught me a couple of lessons.” She said as she continued to bounce Lian on her hip, taking to it naturally. “I’m still messing things up but, you know, as Ted once told me. It isn’t about how you get knocked down to the mat. It is about if you get back up.”
Dinah smirked a little. “Don’t let Ollie hear you say that.” She mused. She didn’t really care much for it but there was apparently only room for one bird in the quiver. As he continued to talk, Dinah shook her head. “I know but…I just, I never saw it like. I just saw you needed someone and I had no idea what I was doing but I just couldn’t…” She stopped for the moment, never shaking those memories. “I didn’t know what I was doing but I knew I had to do something. Even if it just meant being present.” She said finding the words. “Ted was there so I didn’t fall in the cracks of the system. We’ll be there for Lian.”
Tumblr media
“But some people’s messing up is like... owing money. My messing up has me in NA and AA for life.” Not that he was even going to those meetings anymore. Which, would probably fuck him over in the long run. They harped on support systems being important, and Roy just moved to the middle of Europe without one. He’s always been one for taking risks. “I don’t even know if i’m back up. From the other like, 6 times I got knocked down. But I kinda have to be.”
“Ollie can suck a fuck. I’m on your side in a second.” Roy rolled his eyes. Perhaps it was childish of Roy to still sort of hold a grudge against Ollie even now, even after their bonding sessions and no real beef between them. “That’s just what I needed. Someone both rubbing my back and cooing at me and then telling me to get my ass up. I mean, i’m still here so obviously you did something right.”
