YO I FORGOT:
Nicky would either be a flutist or a clarinetist. She’s the only one to make it out of her class’s music Ed program in one piece before going on to love teaching choir. She has a wonderful singing voice and often duets/is accompanied with Aiden for recitals
Jackson dabbles mostly with piano (on the classical side), but has an interest in the electronic age. He doesn’t want to set things on fire, but he loves experimenting with different sounds an electric/MIDI mapped keyboard can make and is mainly a composition major.
Jordi is the concert master for the orchestra on violin. He strictly focuses on classical/romantic era music, and is that kid who shushes you for asking a question to your friend during music theory. Can often be found practicing for 8 hours a day, but strangely has enough time to watch every true crime series on every streaming platform. He can probably kill you with his bow.
Damien is another “old geezer” of the music department, being a non-traditional music business/commercial music student. His primary focus is percussion, but plays French horn in an ensemble or two as needed. He loves orchestral percussion, even if it means sitting through 400 measures of rest to crash the cymbals once. No one knows where he came from, he just started showing up to classes one day.
Okay but hear me out:
Watch Dogs Music Student AU
(I was a music major once so this post is obligatory)
Aiden is definitely a low brass kind of guy, specifically trombone but can pick up a tuba or euphonium with ease. His secondary is guitar (particularly acoustic), and can sing when he wants. He likes to think he’s an awful vocalist but is probably better than half the other Tenor/Basses in the department
Clara is a percussionist, specializing in pitched percussion (so vibraphone, marimba, etc), and she’s involved with the marching band to some extent. Her secondary is piano, but only to do funky “prepared piano” shit (if you’ve never heard of it, look it up, very unique pieces!)
Marcus is possibly a trumpeter or a saxophonist. He’s definitely on the path to be a music educator so he can help students find joy in life through music. His duet partner is Wrench.
Wrench is the odd ball. He’s the singular male flutist/piccolo player but can also play any of the other woodwind instruments with ease. He often dicks around with Clara when it comes to obscure contemporary piano music, and has played “Piano Phase” with her. He plays a shit ton of duets with Marcus, even if he has to write it for the exact instrumentation. He’s also the guy who owns weird instruments, like a bass recorder and an ocarina.
Ray Kenney is the non-traditional jazz pianist whose 15 years older than the rest of the department. He’s often found playing at the local bar where they tip him in alcohol. He accompanies Aiden on piano sometimes, but is mostly “stalked” by the younger generation cuz they idolize him for SOME reason
Josh is also a percussionist, but not as extreme or experimental like Clara. He prefers playing in concert bands and orchestra, and loves that anything can be a percussion instrument.
Sitara is a violinist. She owns a few electric violins for funsies and teases the band director that marching violins CAN exist. She’s not bothered that she isn’t first chair of the orchestra because she gets paid through the department to help run their social media accounts.
Horatio plays cello, but doubles on mellophone for marching band. He eventually becomes drum major for the band, and leader of a couple organizations and ensembles. He eventually gets Marcus, Wrench, Sitara and Josh to make the “SF Five” group.
My music brain is happy. Thoughts?

I wholeheartedly agree. Aiden is a deep character, who was written very well. As much as I would /love/ a prequel sequel to show how he became the man he was in WD1, it would ruin the secrecy of his past and his experiences (and, if not made right, can turn the man into a Gary Stu, and that’s the last thing I would want for him).
He’s a complex character with deep flaws and a troubled past, like most real people. From my understanding of psychology, he’s still grieving over the loss of Lena, in his own, Aiden-esque way. Grief does things to people, and it’s different for EVERYONE. The way I grieved over my grandmother’s passing was different than my mom’s, and we see it with Aiden. Perhaps his reasoning for wanting to help citizens is to prevent people from feeling what he had to go through with Lena.
But we’ll never know. We can only speculate what he was feeling because, unlike most characters, he doesn’t tell the player his feelings. It’s up to interpretation and as OP pointed out, how you play him.
I might deep dive more into Grieving Aiden, might be a fun thing to research :] excellent analysis, OP!!
Aiden is Amazing
With the resent revelation that T-bone is going to have some kind of major role in Watch_Dogs 2 I’ve realised why he appeals so much more to people.
T-bone, Clara and Jordi are all characters that are routinely held up by detractors as ‘superior’ characters, infinitely more preferable as protagonists. It’s what the WD 2 cast is all about, too.
While their personalities aren’t too similar to each other, what they do have in common is one thing: they are all straightforward (yes, even Jordi, just in a different way). You take one look at them and you have a fairly good idea of what they are about.
Now, Aiden isn’t like that. He sends a plethora of mixed messages. Unlike the others, Aiden requires attention to make sense as a character. In the context of a game which is constructed around secrecy and manipulation and that’s steeped in moral ambiguity, this approach to write a protagonist seems to – maybe not make more sense – but it is an appropriate approach.
With Aiden, it’s the player who needs to figure out who he is. His emotions aren’t on his sleeve, he hides them. He’s calm in all moments of adversity, except for the final confrontation, when he starts to crack. He lies a lot. He’s lying to himself. He’s also lying to the player. He’s a con artist, remember that.
Does he care about his family? And if he does, is he only horribly inept to show it? Or perhaps he cares, but not so much he’s willing to change his lifestyle for their well-being, surely a small step, given his skill-set. If Aiden wanted out, he could.
Does he help innocents out of a genuine sense of altruism and justice? Or does he merely enjoy the challenge (as the game at least once implies) of hitting a target that’s running away?
Which innocents is he protecting in the Decoy side-missions? Or perhaps he only takes these jobs for the money and so he has an excuse to drive real fast? It is expressly stated somebody else is committing a crime while he takes the cops for a ride.
Even his non-lethal options are brutal and excessive. The game trying to sell the baton as more merciful is at least somewhat manipulative. The baton, when wielded with enough strength and skill, breaks bones and is perfectly capable of crippling for life. There’s a reason other than game mechanics none of these guys ever get up again. Realistically, some of them died anyway.
What kind of person would experience being blackmailed only to turn around and do the exact same thing to another? Someone, I might point out, less likely than he is to get out of it unharmed.
Or take the slave auction. Aiden is clearly horrified by it, but at the same time he understands exactly the auction’s primary point isn’t money, it’s power.
And then we have another Aiden altogether. The one who trolls (street signs, toys, horsie rides, random fish and moose heads…) That’s someone flexing his power, too.
Speaking of which, when Defalt taunts him, he’s not enraged, the way a one-trick pony would be, he’s highly amused and impressed by the other’s skill. He’s enjoying the contest.
There is the Aiden who drinks and chugs drugs to help stay focussed. The one willing to blast his brain with borderline-illegal software so he can hallucinate being a giant spider or bouncing off flowers. You think that’s not part of his personality?
What about his completely warped sense of other people’s privacy? Power. And it corrupts. Because that’s what this game is about, too. If all that information exists, and is accessible in any way, someone will use it. If you’re lucky, then just for shits and giggles, if you’re not… well, say goodbye to your savings and your freedom.
Yes, Aiden is a hypocrite. Of course he is. He’s called out on his behaviour by the overall game and by other characters. More than once, too. He is responsible for his own suffering. And he’s found a very dysfunctional way to handle it, too, like real people sometimes do.
Aiden is not nice. He is not meant to be nice (if you play him like that, the game will occasional contradict you, too). He is not meant to be particularly relatable or sympathetic. He does, however, make perfect sense for a game like this.
So, I understand disliking these traits. I even understand not wanting to invest time and thought into putting the pieces together. Personal taste is what it is, none of us get to pick it.
You don’t have to agree with my interpretation, either.
But don’t try to dismiss this character as “bland” and having “no personality”. If he’s so “generic”, please point me to all the other characters just like him, because I haven’t seen them yet.
Tl:dr Aiden is amazing.

jackson has every right to be angry - an incoherent rambling
(SPOILERS BELOW FOR BLOODLINE DLC)
okay. so as much as some of us (probably just me) wanted a happy reunion between Jacks and Aiden, feasibly that wasn't possible and I'm very glad the DLC didn't go down that route. Jackson was ten. TEN years old when his Uncle Aiden forced him and his mom out of their hometown and to a completely different state (to my knowledge) all out of 'protection', and was never seen or heard from again.
Until, you know, Aiden broke into his London flat to 'protect' Jackson.
We all know how much his family means to Aiden, but to learn that he kept NO contact with his sister, let alone his nephew, in the last 15 years is heartbreaking. Jackson grew up and only had his mom around as family (to our knowledge): his only sibling tragically died at Aiden's hands, no cousins, no aunts and uncles, no grandparents, and most likely, no father figure. The only other family he had was his Uncle Aiden, and he flat out vaporized from his, and Nicki's, existence without as much of a phone call to properly explain everything.
If it was me, rolling into my apartment to see my estranged uncle snooping on my computer and eating my untouched snacks, I would also be pissed.
I'd be angry. I'd be upset, confused, screaming internally "Why the fuck are you coming into my life now when you had many other chances to do so?!"
Being that Aiden is a comfort character, I understand why he didn't call or send a text as Jackson would have preferred: Jackson had little to no way to have anyone contact him (for better or for worse), and he was under the impression by Rempart that Jackson was in immediate danger, so of course he wanted to make sure his only nephew was safe. But this action of course is going to make Jackson flip the fuck out.
We see throughout the DLC that Jackson is perfectly capable of handling himself (being the smart PhD student he is with Pearce blood) ((also Ubisoft give me a WD game with him as the protag PLEASE)), and he probably feels that Aiden is 'overbearing' with his need to fly ALL THE WAY TO FUCKING LONDON to check on him and make sure he was okay.
After all, he took the job from Jordi because it was based in London, where Jackson currently lived.
Jackson, who hasn't seen or heard from Aiden in 15 years, has grown up. He can fight on his own. He can hold his own. And Aiden even admits it! Saying that Jackson is a smart kid, smarter than him. As much as I wanted Aiden and Jackson to hug when they finally see each other after all those years, realistically speaking, it was never going to happen. Not at least at the start of the DLC.
Jackson warms up to Aiden over time (a little too quickly in my opinion, but the game had to make their uncle/nephew bond be strong in order for the second act to make sense), and even agreeing to work with Uncle Wrench to bring Aiden out of his coma. We don't get to see Jackson's reaction to being in Aiden's head (a post for another day), and them talking about it. I would like to believe that whole experience makes Jackson realize what Aiden was truly going through and the extent of the pain he felt that he hid from everyone else, thus Jackson accepting Aiden's possibly-non-existent apology.
This is why Jackson was ultimately angry and aggressive upon his first few interactions with Dear Ol' Uncle Aiden. He's not a kid anymore, he can fight and be independent without the protection of others. He learned to survive without the support or help from other people, and the fact that Aiden feels the need to protect his 25 year old nephew from a raging man child must've felt insulting. Imagine having a family member who you haven't spoken to in literal decades show up at your doorstep because 'You're in danger'. Would you be happy to see them?
Jackson had every right to be angry, and even after being inside Aiden's fucked up memories, still has every right to be angry at Aiden.
