We can have a debate about this or whatever, I won't lose sleep over it but it's fun to debate or things every once and a while. Oh heavens, where do I even start.
First off, not saying housewives don't do work. If I alluded sorry but not what I meant, or what I said. In tags I mention the whole thing about having what feminist fought for I stand by that. I dunno if you've seen this "new wave feminism" of stay at home girlfriends, "revisiting old traditions of the housewife", but please dear god do not tell me that is feminism. Read any posting about criticisms of first wave feminism, and feminist ideals of WASPs (White Anglo Saxon Protestants) and you'll get an idea of what I mean, and if not idk.
Yeah, they have the freedom to choose but realistically speaking, what other woman in America or in a different tax bracket has that choice? A person in the comments mentioned this but this idea only really applies in first world countries, and especially here in America to people in upper middle class. Honestly, any minority woman in a lower class or minority woman in general has probably heard from their moms and grandmothers to get a job and be independent. They know the realities of being a housewife and having complete economic dependence on your partner. It's dangerous.
If you think otherwise that's fine, but selling to me that being a housewife is feminism because they have freedom to choose is simply not true. Yes, it's the freedom of choice but realistically speaking, think about for who. You really think the average minority woman in America, or any person in a lower class is going to have this option? And have it work well for them? Is that what your feminism is representing? Don't sit and tell me about because of feminism now we can work and be a mom. The average mother in America, and across the world, most likely already does that due to the fact that they have no choice. So again, this freedom to be a housewife because of feminism, I'm not buying it. If you were in 1700s England a upper class white lady was privy to the same things. Again, read and look at criticisms of first wave feminism.
Freedom of choice only really exists until choice can apply to people across all socioeconomic points or at least 60% if i'm being realistic. So no, they are not my concern and not my plight for feminism. Hell, Cardi B wasn't a housewife by any means but she was getting ab*sed by her boyfriend. But she had no money, and it was his apartment. Literally stripping gave her an income and saved her.
Here's the thing about wanting to be a housewife economically speaking. You are dependent on your partner and spouse for income. There is no way around that. Social values can say you do hard work, but in the grand scheme of things you are being put in a position where the work you do has little to no economic value and that puts immense power into one person. You can tell me all you want well if the partner loves and respects them it's not an issue etc. I'm of the more realistic stature; for every one person who's a housewife doing her thing there are 5 others who used to be that person who are now jobless, have 20 year gaps on their resumes, applying for government aid all because they devoted themselves to this dream.
You can argue that well then that means we need better protocols instead of just simple things like child support so that women can feel safe and secure and have means to protect themselves against situations like this. If you want that to be your angle, by all means go for it. But the points y'all were making in this post in the first place didn't even allude to that so now what?
