Regardless of my feelings about the BoS as a whole in the Fallout series, Maximus as a character exceeded all my expectations.
Maximus, honestly, to me, was the most nuanced and best acted character in the series. His situations were fantastical and yet the way he reacted to it all was so grounded. He was like a prestige drama character in a series full of cartoons. Don't get me wrong, I like the cartoons. Fallout leans heavily into parody and it's totally on brand. But Maximus' entire emotional arc was so understated and I really appreciated it.
He isn't a very vocal OR excessively emotive character because he knows being vulnerable hurts him. He shapes himself to that idealized memory of the knight in the armor even as he doesn't seem to really understand or care for the beliefs behind the armor. He's failing his classes as an aspirant. When talking of the BoS beliefs, he throws in a "or whatever". That part of it doesn't matter to him. The armor IS his belief system.
His whole story is about the cycle of violence and toxicity. The bullies who beat him. The abuse he endures. He wants power so that he can escape it but once he gets that chance he's doomed to perpetuate it, because that power is coming from the system. It's tainted. Deep down he doesn't want revenge, he doesn't even want power for power's sake, he wants safety. And he wants to be the hero from his memory, he wants the strength to save himself from this cycle.
And yet, he just keeps making he wrong choices. Over and over and over. He can't get out of it.
And then Lucy throws him a lifeline. And it takes someone from outside of the cycle to break through. And then he makes the choice to do the right thing even though it means making himself weaker, making himself less safe. He chooses to do the right thing for the first time in the show. And it means finally letting go of his dream, the armor.
And he sees a light at the end of the tunnel. He thinks his reward is going to be Vault 33, he's going to be safe and happy with someone who cares about him and makes him feel like a real, good person.
And by the end of the series, he's trapped in the cycle again.
There is just something so delicious about someone getting everything they wanted at the start and being miserable about it. There's something so REAL about wanting to be something but every instinct makes you sabotage yourself every step of the way.
And the thing is, he had all of these little moments of genuineness, selfishness, pettiness, virtue, I genuinely didn't know what he was going to do for most of the show. I thought he might turn on Lucy at some point. I honestly, truly thought he had sabotaged Dane even though Dane was his only friend. He is so morally hard to pin down because he's so full of life's little hypocrisies. His ideals and his feelings are in conflict so much and he doesn't have to look anguished for you to understand that. You just see it in his resigned stares, in his hesitance and his ultimate actions.
I just... I really loved Maximus. Bravo to Aaron Moten.

So! Finished watching the new Fallout show. Twice. I heartily recommend it regardless of if you've played the games.
Thematically speaking, they absolutely NAILED it. Fallout's charm has always come from a specific blend of absurd comedy and grim tragedy. One moment you're being forced to execute an innocent person for your own survival, the next you're having a funny conversation about Shakespeare with a big green man. The show knows when to take itself seriously and when to be silly, and that's very important to get right! The violence especially is handled well. It has a careful balance between campy and gruesome similar to what you'd find in Evil Dead. Just like the wasteland, Fallout's violence is equal parts brutal and absurd.
But what I REALLY appreciate is how the show explores aspects of the world that the games CAN'T! Its occasional flashbacks to prewar America are arguably where the show is at its strongest, because while the Fallout games have always critiqued unregulated capitalism and government/corporate propaganda, they could only ever really do so in the past-tense. The show meanwhile takes full advantage of its ability to jump between present and past, and in doing so manages to use its cold-war setting to make some EXTREMELY relevant critiques of modern America.
Lastly, I feel I should mention it was a delightful surprise to see some not-insignificant nonbinary representation! Not that Disney blink-and-you'll-miss-it crap, either. I REALLY didn't expect that because I know Fallout is one of those older game series that has capital-G "Gamers" as a not-insignificant portion of its fanbase. The sort of people for whom there are only two sexes: "Male" and "Political."
But in retrospect the Fallout series ALSO has games where being gay is a literal unlockable ability that provides unique benefits in both conversation and combat with same-sex NPCs. This really wasn't a big jump from that.
So... yeah! If you for some reason read all this without having seen the show, go see it! It's a fun time!

Ooh, I like this take! More people should see it!
We're all mostly on board with the idea that Miquella = St. Trina = Torrent's former master = the spirit tuner who Hewg knew, right? Remember how Hewg says that Roderika reminds him of said spirit tuner?
Before Miquella was the most fearsome Empyrean, brilliant inventor, medical genius, and lord of his own independent city-state... Was he something like Roderika?
While in the guise of St. Trina, struggling to provide a measure of relief to the victims of his parents' Order, did he blame himself for injustices far beyond his control?
While he watched Malenia lose limbs and suffer under constant nightmares, did he succumb to survivor's guilt?
As his physical development stalled and eventually stopped entirely and he found himself unable to act as the warrior prince the Order demanded, did he see himself as a worthless craven?

I LOVE Dungeon Meshi's Realistic Fantasy Races
Ok, I had to stop for a moment to gush about the fantasy races of Dunmeshi, and all the consideration that's been put into them, because they actually follow a degree of natural/evolutionary logic not found in most fantasy stories!
Half-Foots (halflings/hobbits):
Tumblr media
So we all know these fellows have excellent hearing and smell, but have you considered WHY? It's an adaptation to counteract their size. Humans (called tallmen in this setting) rely so much on eyesight because we're really tall compared to most animals, giving us a fantastic vantage of our environment. Half-Foots don't have this advantage, and therefore rely on their other senses. It's also much more important for them to be able to detect unseen threats and move quickly, because their size makes them ill-equipped for direct conflict.
Dwarves:
Tumblr media
So Dwarves are depicted as MUCH stronger than tallmen despite their size, right? This is because strength is determined not by size, but by mass, and dwarven bodies are very dense! Yet this comes with the downside of their bodies burning more energy and overheating much faster, which is why dwarves are also shown to be heat-resistant, and why they tend to wear lighter clothing that exposes more skin! Their night-vision is also better than humans' due to their semi-underground lifestyle, while their hearing remains about the same since sound naturally carries in caves. Their hairiness is also likely a direct adaptation to counteract magic, as it's been shown to form a natural buffer when left unwashed.
Gnomes:
Tumblr media
Gnomes are supposed to be evolutionary cousins to dwarves, and it shows! They share a similar height, but are less muscular and have peculiarly-shaped ears, almost mirroring the difference between human and elven ears. Their affinity with nature and spirits also makes sense, because physically they're in an awkward spot compared to the other short races, lacking both the hefty strength of dwarves and the light nimbleness of half-foots. Being less equipped both for fight and flight, it makes sense they'd instead adapt the instinctive ability to read their environments and mitigate its threats through cohabitation.
Elves:
Tumblr media
Like gnomes, elves are in a physically awkward place, however it's even more extreme. Their relatively light and weak bodies make them ill-equipped for direct conflict, and while likely able to move faster than tallmen due to weight, they lack the half-foot's danger-detection senses. This makes them seemingly helpless, however interestingly it actually explains why they're so advanced compared to other races! They were basically forced to coordinate problem-solve, and control their environments out of necessity, which is reflected in their more controlling and direct relationship with magic and nature compared to gnomes.
This actually mirrors the real-world difference between humans and neanderthals. Anthropologists believe neanderthals weren't actually dumber than humans, but that their superior strength and durability meant they weren't forced to problem-solve or control their environments like humans, meaning they seemed less advanced.

i have to get this out of the way, re: dungeon meshi discussions
major spoilers ahead, obviously.
you know for a series that focuses so much on platonic and familial relationships it’s weird that dungeon meshi has attracted so much useless ship wars though. the most important driving force in the story is two sibling relationships (laios’s search for falin, thistle’s search for delgal) and one of the central themes is how loving others way too much can lead to your downfall (thistle’s desperate attempt to keep his loved ones leads to his mental state deteriorating so much he starts torturing people he claims to protect, marcille’s fear of losing her friends leads to her being easily manipulated by the main antagonist)
even with regards to falin. thistle wants to bring the ‘brother’ he raised back at all costs, he saw a young human woman as nothing more than a dragon, his tool. marcille wants to bring falin back at all costs, she didn’t care about the repercussions of using monster meat instead of animal meat even though she was an expert at ancient magic and should know why it’s such a dangerous practice.
each and every single one of the major characters has some form of tragedy with their family one way or another: the toudens, marcille and her dad. chilchuck and his wife. senshi’s entire backstory. izutsumi’s hidden desire for a mother. namari’s father. shuro and his family. kabru and his mother(both tallman and elf). mithrun and his brother. thistle and the melinis.
even some of the minor characters: flamela and her dead twin sister. the twins and the floke couple. kuro being the closest mickbell has to a family. etc etc
as someone who has reread this manga several times by now, i wonder if people just… read it once as fast as they could and act like they’re some sort of authority on fan discussion. i’ve seen people brag about reading the entire thing in one sitting as if it’s something to be proud of. this manga isn’t meant to be read that fast, that’s how you get people claiming that laios doesn’t reaaally love falin as much as marcille does.
to these people, laios just gets in the way, as if it wasn’t his idea to go down the dungeon in the first place, it wasn’t him who said his pain doesn’t matter because falin suffered more than him, it wasn’t him who felt immense guilt for leaving falin behind, it wasn’t him who found her skull, it wasn’t him who killed her to save her from her chimera form. i feel like people forget about the ‘too’ part when marcille said “i miss falin too”
marcille knows how much falin and laios love each other. that’s why she asked him if she’s allowed to resurrect her and didn’t act on her own. that’s why when both times a shapeshifting monster copied marcille to trick laios, it was what she looked like at the time she was reviving falin.
as someone who DOES ship farcille, none of the romance is canon. this isn’t meant to be anti-farcille. one of the post-canon comics is about falin gently turning down shuro because she wants to travel the world, “you can’t tie a dragon down” after all. she wants to travel the world and find herself because she doesn’t know who she is outside of marcille and laios. even marcille, who was hoping she’d reject him, tears up because of how beautiful and tragic it was.
there are a lot of ship teases because what author doesn’t like a good ship tease. but to say that dungeon meshi is a romantic love more than it is a story about family(both real and found) is a great misinterpretation of the text.

An often overlooked detail about TF2's Sniper:
"Half rugged outdoorsman, half alien observer, this taciturn strip of beef jerky has spent the better part of his life alone in the bush, slow baking under the Australian sun." - Sniper's Official Bio
Almost no-one depicts Sniper's UFO-chasing paranoid conspiracy side, and I think that's tragic. This is a man who likely quietly believes Bigfoot was an escaped government experiment.

Smough's Armour is Deceptively Clever
Tumblr media
First off, the helmet. It's common knowledge that the part with the face is actually ABOVE Smough's head, designed to draw blows away from his face, however his head ALSO isn't located by the eye-markings either:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a double fake-out! And best of all it's surprisingly well thought out. Armour works best when it leaves room between metal and body to absorb blows. The usual problem with full helms like Smough's is that the only way to see through them with any sort of efficiency is to press one's face right up against the holes/slits, leaving very little space for shock absorption.
Now notice how the part with the lower "eyes" bulges outwards. It's the EXACT shape you want when deflecting blows! So you either hit the upper "face" and miss completely, or hit the lower "face" and bounce right off. For a massive fellow like Smough, aiming for his head is the most efficient way to take him down, and he KNOWS that.
This deceptive strategy is utilized ALL throughout Smough's armour, primarily because he isn't actually fat according to his concept art. The bulbous shape of his armour exists entirely to deflect blows and make enemies assume it reflects the anatomy within.

Why Sniper and Spy Despise One Another
Tumblr media
The relationship between Sniper and Spy is a well-crafted one. Both are assassins who fulfil the same role and pride themselves on professionalism. It's their definition of "professional" where they diverge.
To Sniper, professionalism is defined by detachment and efficiency. Taking a life is serious business, and so the job is prioritized above everything, including basic hygiene and bathroom breaks. "Snipers don't muck about... we just take the shot."
To Spy, professionalism is defined by dignity and artistry. Taking a life is serious business, and so it must be handled with grace, even when fighting lunatics in the middle of a desert. "Six unstabbed backs... I do love a blank canvas!"
Sniper considers Spy unprofessional and cowardly due to his pompous demeanour and underhanded tactics. To find artistry in murder is psychopathic, to engage in trickery, dishonourable. Spy is an arrogant snake that gives proper assassins like Sniper a bad name. "Ya bloody backstabbing fraud!"
Spy considers Sniper unprofessional and cowardly due to his oafish demeanour and impersonal tactics. To murder without feeling is psychopathic, to attack only from a distance, dishonourable. Sniper is a tactless brute that gives proper assassins like Spy a bad name. "You disgust me, filthy jar man!"

I really, REALLY want a version of the Convergence mod that JUST adds the spells for this exact reason. Between this and the way they butchered Castle Mourne, I just couldn't keep playing it.
Oh, also it's balanced quite terribly. There are so many powerful buff spells that the early game becomes a cakewalk. I wasn't even bothering to level Vigour because I was already tanky as heck with enormous permanent damage resistances.
The convergence is a really good elden ring mod, but I have just one criticism: I think that design change to Rennala was a mistake, let her have her weird moon shaped hat, she already have weird alien proportions this insistance of making women all have the same conventionally attractive limits design so much, the point of Rennala's hat was to look like a moon shaped mitre (pope's hat) that showed how the carian family view the moon and glintstone magic as divine (differently than the golden order) and as a symbol of authority while also visually accentuating the slenderness, "verticality", and counterposing Rennala's weirder proportions.
Here how she is standing uptight and with her hat, there is nothing really off abt her at first glance speacially from this angle
Tumblr media
But if you pay attention, she starts looking really odd at different angles:
Tumblr media
look how broad her shoulders are, how long her neck and arms are relativetly to a regular person's proportions. Dont get me wrong I love her design and I think she looks really beatiful and find her lankyness interesting way to show is not a regular human and there is something outerwordly going on with her (the moon's influence and the glintstone). And here is how her hat makes her design all come together and make her visual shape more imposing authentic and less goofy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I edited on paint dont judge)See how without the long hat her silhouette weirder, like she is wearing some big shoulder pads? how she looks more like a big rectangle with some skinny arms popping out?
Thats why I get mad when they pussyout to gamer bros complaint about her hat making her look ugly and with end up with this:
Tumblr media
completely ruined her shape language and removed the mitre part of her symbolism to a generic crown/tiara.

I wonder who Nepheli's mother was, because while she has Godfrey's strength of body and will, she lacks his animalistic bloodlust. Plus, there's her affinity for the winds, a force we know very little about...

"The oppression of the weak. Murder and pillage unchecked. A waking nightmare, made by men. But this time, I'm a woman grown. And though the suffering cannot be undone, I can still mete out justice. Justice to the oppressors. Let the scars I carve remind them: I, am Nepheli Loux... Warrior."

Elden Beast looks like a sea slug. Really. I knew it looked familar or reminiscent of some kind of real life creature. Then I remembered the Blue Dragon sea slug and now I’m going to compare the Elden Beast to sea slugs. Interesting to note that nudibranch (sea slugs) are hermaphrodites… Idk reminds me of Marigon (Marika/Radagon). They are a man and woman who share a body, and they’re found in the Erdtree with the Elden Beast, who then makes a sword out of Radagon… I’m reaching again so here’s the sea slugs and Elden Beast

The Blue Glaucus
And then here’s the funky fellow itself.

Something I've noticed about the live-action show:
Even if the writing and acting were fantastic, bending REALLY has trouble working in live-action.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notice how much harder it is to read what's happening in the live-action? One feels like martial arts, the other like generic magic. It lacks the original's physicality and punchiness, all while costing much, MUCH more.
It's a shame western audiences can't take animation seriously, because had they devoted even half of this show's budget to an animated remake in the style of Arcane, I think we could've had something REALLY special on our hands...

Watching Netflix's live-action Avatar right now.
I REALLY want it to be good, but I'm only like 20 minutes in and already needed to take a break after Aang went on a monologue in which he spelled out EXACTLY how he felt about being the Avatar to the camera. Zero nuance or subtlety, just him literally saying "I'm scared of this power, I don't want to be alone."
Again, I really WANT to be positive. I'm not going to be one of those purists who declares it's the worst thing they've ever seen just because it tries something different, so I'm going to hope it gets better from here. They spent so much money on this show, they MUST have hired good writers, right??
Still it SUPER doesn't help when I remember how the original show (made for a YOUNGER AUDIENCE) conveyed the exact same points about Aang in like a 3 minute flashback, all while utilizing the "show, don't tell" principle.
UPDATE:
Finally slogged my way to episode 2, and immediately things are going a LOT better. Characters suddenly feel like themselves, instead of awkward exposition machines.
For fans of the original show, I honestly suggest skipping the first episode completely. The only context you'll be missing is that Aang took a book on avatars from Zuko's quarters. Now, is this BETTER than the original show? HELL no. Not even close.

There are a lot of reasons to hate AI "art," and today I found a new one!
Tried googling "Roman Statue" pictures, and mixed in with the real references were these godamn skinwalkers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sure I can spot them easily now, but as AI improves it's going to get harder and harder to tell. I'm going to need to start scrutinizing every damn reference I find if I want to be sure it's real.
If any artists or photographers see this, PLEASE run your work through Nightshade or a similar anti-ai tool before sharing it online. I do not want to live in a post-art world.
