Hi Al-An fictionkin here!
I remember being slightly concerned when robin did change into her warm suit, I had already been lurking around her pda at that point to research humans and their mannerisms and their idea of societies because i was generally curious, I had known that humans have clothes and that they can be changed however I didn’t fully understand the concept of it until that moment. I mentioned that to Robin later the same day and she was very uncomfortable about that topic but was motivated to get me out of her head quicker which is very understandable
Been thinking about the Architects lately and I realized that Al-An doesn’t wear any clothes.
I mean, that’s an obvious observation, but it makes me wonder: Do Architects have any concept of clothing? If not, does Al-An think that Robin’s clothes are just a part of her body?
That would be pretty funny if he did.
Robin: *removes her gloves*
Al-An: “I thought you humans were supposed to be mammalian?”
Robin: “…..what?”
Al-An: “Did you not just shed your skin?”

righto - im back add even MORE stuff
in reference to your final paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to the small paragraph under the first photo, adapting to..."), I strongly think that vessels are kinda like plants – you’ve got to grow them to full maturity for them to become able to become self-sufficient and thrive. This, again, links back to the similar logical method of grafting apple trees- chopping and changing parts to create an ideal kind.
2. Responding to your first paragraph (sentence beginning "Okay so in response to #2..."), I believe that precursors do also have the choice of remaining in two separate vessels, be this usually for practical reasons, for example, having very different functions that require them to be in different places at the same time. This likely is not as common as simply inhabiting the same vessel but is an option for them nevertheless. As for inhabiting the same vessel, I do believe that it is likely for precursors to have internal fallings out within their singular vessel, which of course would present numerous problems. Hence, they have the option to move their consciousness to a separate vessel. However, this may not always be possible, which could cause further tensions within the relationship.
3. To reference to your fourth paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to #3, the colors, shapes...") I have included a diagram of how I think it would work, as blood cannot transport nerves. This should hopefully illustrate what I am attempting to get across a little more cohesively to you.
Tumblr media
Annotations read:
nerves would likely be found in the stratum lucidum, epidermis, chromatophore, and iridophore layers.
Layer 1: thin filmy layer, which acts as a cell membrane and allows for osmosis (for fluids) and diffusion (for gases). It could also function similarly to the stratum lucidum.
Layer 2: translucent gel. Similar to the epidermis, designed to act as a barrier for delicate internals.
Layer 3: chromatophores producing pigment of varying levels of yellow, red, brown, and most likely also blue. This varies the colour of the 'glowing channels' and is what creates those colours.
Layer 4: Iridophores reflect light using chemochrones composed of gelatine. This is what gives the precursors their 'shiny' appearance
Layer 5: stratum spongiosum, stratum compactum, etc...
Layer 6: a thin sheet of fibrous muscle. It acts somewhat as a giant web of ligaments, enabling them to move (see figure 3 of the second page of diagrams)
Below all that, 'blood' essentially fills the rest of the gaps inside the structure of the vessel. It transports nutrients, electrolytes, gases, hormones, etc...
Tumblr media
Figure 2: a dip between the two slides of keratin that protects the delicate flesh underneath. This makes it more difficult to access the soft, delicate flesh underneath.
Figure 3: The plates of keratin can overlap to allow for movement. The stratum lucidum can bend easily and the underlying flesh is flexible.
Figure 4: I am sure that varying levels of each kind of pigment will vary between each precursor, much like human skin and the production of melanin, essentially varying based on the evolutionary traits that is best suited for the clime and role they hold.
Figure 5: Here shows a sample precursor leg. We could take a small sample of material, which in TURN includes data from the precursor it was sourced from, which makes a fair bit more natural and logical sense. Think of it like grafting an apple tree. If precursors are so intelligent, then this method would make more logical sense, as this contains more information and value than just a data download, it is much less technology-intensive than an entire data download, plus it is just very sweet and sentimental, plus it doesn't cost much, all that's needed is a bit of time and a small piece of flesh. However, this comes at the cost of it taking a lot longer, which is pretty inconvenient. But, at the cost of a more developed precursor, it is a cost worth taking, /nm
This would require a nervous system, which is possibly featured in the game (mind you I haven’t played Below Zero, I am waiting for the perfect opportunity) due to the inclusion of a precursor vessel skeleton, which confirms the precursors are vertebrates, meaning that they have a spinal column, and therefore a peripheral nervous system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The organs, as biologically nonsensical as they are, do provide somewhat of an impression of how things might work in their bodies. Also, we can see that the structure of the antlers and crests are in fact bone, rather than cartilaginous structures, which is somewhat similar to Cervidae, but more closely to that of bovine, as the horns are connected to the skull.
Tumblr media
The organs.
Tumblr media
Hoo boy. They appear to have lungs, which could lend to the idea that the channels in their body are designed for the intake of oxygen, as there are no obvious orifices for a trachea, and there isn’t even one featured in the organs themselves. The organs are directly connected to these fan-like structures, similar to that of rami found on axolotl.
Tumblr media
This leads to the idea that these could possibly stretch and flow over the back of the body, reaching down the back, as there clearly is no space to house such things on the shoulders. Plus, they look pretty floppy. Plus, the ‘lungs’ themselves are spotted with small suction cup-looking things, which seem to line up pretty nicely with the holes in the ribcage.
Tumblr media
This may tell us that oxygen is taken in from these, which connect to the keratin shell, and hence absorb outside gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide) through diffusion through the small channels in-between the keratin plates. Then, these fibrous structures may provide some form of nutrient transportation or may help support the structure of the body. Then, below that, are two small glands of equal size. Architects do not appear to consume or drink anything, so what these glands are is equally up for interpretation.
Tumblr media
I believe that they could be used for temperature regulation, by creating exothermic reactions with chemicals such as methane or sulphur to keep warm and ammonia to keep cool. They need to adapt to a variety of climes, so this may be an adaption to assist that. They could also be there to control or house chemical reactions in the body, though this likely is something that would go on within the bloodstream. The rest of it? I’m not exactly sure. Maybe something to do with nerves?
And, in reference to the second part of the same paragraph (sentence beginning "Yes, we can feel temperatures...") I would also link precursors to crustaceans and molluscs- there is a much more similar pattern to the tail and bodily structure, as well as the soft, squishy innards with a solid exoskeleton, usually keratin or chitin. However, precursors have an inner skeleton, too, which lends them more to creatures like crocodiles and tortoises, which have both. The precursor shares semblance with all of these earthly creatures, which all share one common trait- persevering in the evolutional battle for millennia. The crocodile is well known to be a descendant of archosaurs in the late Cretaceous period and is still an apex predator. Molluscs - descendants of the nautilus, tortoises – also related to archosaurs, crustaceans – decapods from over 300 million years ago. The precursors are known to have visited and left impacts on Earth, which could mean that they either gave traits of their kind to the creatures of Earth, or, after observing the creatures and their incredible adaptions, adapted their vessels to have similar traits so they are more likely to survive in harsh or challenging conditions.
4. To refer to your third paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to #4 my species didn’t feel familial ties..."), I'd like to throw in a possibility for when fabricating a vessel, there is a slim likelihood that a vessel may be defective or not 'up to standards'. I'll refer to my uninteresting OC Ov'An as an example here: Ov'An is a runt of the litter, metaphorically speaking. Its body is much weaker and more scrawny than its peers, who have much more bulky, stronger bodies built for rough conditions, as most precursors were designed for. I'd also like to note the possibility of class within the precursors. Precursor society has been described as somewhat socialist, but I reckon that at some point they would decide to elect some form of guiding force for them to provide stability and a sense of direction, as well as choosing the most intelligent mind to help guide all. This could possibly lead to a court system, where several collective members of the most intelligent consciousnesses would band together in a sort of council to aid each other and bounce ideas off another perspective to ensure the most success and longevity possible for the greater society.
Holy moly realizing these ideas and possibilities really makes one's mind run riot lol ESPECIALLY figuring out all the minute intricacies of how the precursors might tick!

ok ok ok ok ok I've gotta share my precursor headcanons after seeing your post omg
right- so I do actually headcanon the precursors as giant glowing mood rings lol I just think it's really cool that there could be specific nerves or hormones that trigger chemical reactions that can provoke chromatophores below their epidermis (ill get to this in a second) now I am no biologist but I have done some research and I honestly think its a pretty cool concept! for further reading, study cephalopods! I have a precursor OC myself, Ov'An, and these are the colours I use to describe their emotions:
Tumblr media
these colours have been chosen as they either have symbolic value or correspond to the energy of the emotion. For example, the 'emotional pain' emotion is similar to the 'dead' emotion, Ov'An equates them to the same thing. However, 'emotional pain' is still slightly illuminated against their dark green shell. Often, I have decided to link colours together with similar tones, to equate them as having similar value to Ov'An and how they express themselves. I likely believe that this would vary from precursor to precursor, as they are complex creatures with equally complex emotions and nerves. (BTW 'ragingly horny' was thrown in for sh*ts and giggles)
2. Sexuality. Oh, God. This is a pretty interesting topic for me, as I am asexual and sex-repulsed! I view Ov'An and precursors being somewhat of a similar ilk, possibly viewing such a thing as raw, visceral, and crude? After all, they have seemingly evolved beyond such things to higher methods, so could possibly see it as a simpler thing to their perceived higher methods. I believe that they will have feelings of affection and closeness, and will form bonds with their companions and associates. However, this could possibly be more of an emotional connection of closeness and care for the other/s, rather than lust or passion, viewing romance as more of companionship and dependence and help rather than a typical romantic relationship. However, I do still believe that they have the capacity for romance, it would be very dull not to feel such things.
My weird OC, Ov'An, has a reaaaaaally twisted view of affection. They were relatively isolated from the vast majority of the precursor population following their fabrication, the only sources of closeness stemming from immediate family (who could be considered just who helped fabricate who, or who they deem close to them), which meant that they did not receive much experience of how much works. Also, I do believe that precursors can be defective, or be faced with internal issues that may not make them as regular and up-tight and intelligent as the general population. Ov'An is a keen example of this, being uninterested in study and research, more focused on material things, and being rather lazy. They perceive affection as possession, that they have power over something, they, therefore, feel that they 'own' that individual and their emotions. It's all they've ever been taught, and it's all they know.
Tumblr media
This leads to me believing that nurture vs. nature still applies to precursors, which can also be seen with Al'An and how Robin influenced him and his views and perceptions.
3. The colourful sections. I see these as channels within the solid darker panels on the precursor's form. The outer dark green material of the precursor I think could be a keratin-based material, similar to the shells of Testudinidae. This means that they can still sense external and internal stimuli, while also having a solid, tough outer shell to protect them from differing pressures and climes. This is to protect a soft, supple, squishy inner. This would have a texture similar to gelatine, and would be comprised of several layers:
a thin filmy layer, with the strength of spider silk and the appearance of the first skin of a freshly-peeled onion
a layer of translucent gel, which refracts light due to its dense cloudy texture. This would likely be something similar to an epidermis
differing layers of chromatophores: yellow -> red -> brown. Possibly also bioluminescent or ultraviolet fibers?
a few fine layers (think stratum spongiosum & compactum, etc...)
fibrous muscle strands that essentially hold all the panels together and move in-tandem
Possibly bioluminescent 'blood'? this could be super cool but impractical lol it could essentially just serve as a way for hormones, nutrition, electrolytes, oxygen, and carbon dioxide (as well as other trace gases) to be passed around the entire vessel
And hence, wherever the keratin shell is thin or not there, there will be a luminescent glow!
The 'pulsating' effect, again, can be seen in mollusks, which often do this to better blend with their surroundings, or just generally as the environment around them shifts.
4. the formation of vessels. this could be an interesting subject! I had the idea that a precursor, who may have wanted a family, could insert a small amount of their own vessel (e.g. cutting out a small chunk of their arm or leg to then place within the fabricating vessel. This could make it similar to recessive and dominant genes and traits- there could be inherited traits, such as horns, patterns, and colours. This could also link back to the family thing- every new precursor is the culmination of millions of its kind before. I'd imagine upon the 'birth' or 'awakening' of a young precursor, all the precursors fall silent to listen for its first melody! it would be so sweet :'D
5. Also I am darn certain that precursors do have the capacity for deliberate cruelty. It is a strong, powerful emotion, and clearly they possessed a somewhat lack of empathy and understaning, as well as rashness, back in 4546B when researching the fetuses of the sea Emporer leviathans.
Yet again to refer back to my boring OC, Ov'An, they essentially manipulate a stranded human who crash-lands (not Ryley, this is yonks earlier) into using their own flesh and body to propagate a vessel, as there was insufficient material in the containers to build Ov'An a vessel, but as this human had to undergo an emergency amputation earlier, they were missing a large portion of flesh, as well as being wrought bare by being stranded, so there wasn't enough material to propagate from, so Ov'An's vessel was fabricated with a missing leg from the knee downwards (see diagram)
Tumblr media
Honestly, there are so many ways to go with precursors, it's just so fun imagining them all out!!!!!!
I do love the suggestions you came up with!! they're great!!!!
Iiiiiii am going to try and read all of this but I promise absolutely nothing because my brain hurts- also I’m definitely going to read these out of order, bare with me here
Tone tags used; /nm meaning not mad
Okay so in response to #2 so yes, I may have forgotten to say this is one of my rambles, we architects do in fact feel romantic attraction! However it is not expressed the same way as humans. First thing, architects pair for life, polyamory is a thing some architects did. The biggest ceremony in courtship we’d have is that the architect mainly leading the courtship would ask the object of their affection to share the same vessel, the two would control different parts of that vessel, and both would be able to ‘speak’ at the same time.
In response to #5 my species was highly emotional (in our standards) towards each other but we held little appreciation towards our surroundings and the indigenous life that would happen to be there, admittedly I was nearly the same way however I meant no harm to the sea emperor and I had asked if communicating with it was an option, which that idea didn’t even get a chance to be heard when my lab was destroyed. Beta Al-An is a good example of this with how blatantly dismissive and kind of rude they were. However, as one can guess, a good hundred years or so in solitude changes one’s perceptions towards life on a planet
In response to #4 my species didn’t feel familial ties the way humans do, we would build the most stable form that was available, we would start of in a much more basic form as the more extravagant things like horns, detail of those horns, size, many more ‘veins’ of light, among other things were reserved for those of higher class, my body in source just happened to be derived of that of high status, hence why they were even in that zen garden. Pleasantries like that we’re also reserved for the stronger and smarter individuals in our society. And when a young one would be derived from some ‘data’ of one or more architect consciousness it really would only be what our society would be needing at that time, that is where inheritance comes into play. Back when I was in my high spot in society my consciousness would have a sample taken from it and either duplicated or added to samples of other consciousness to gain smarts, strength, and other personality traits for what our people would need. However that would also be a bit of a gamble since that new architect would be their own person and could choose their own path despite the nagging of m people. That’s also how colors come into play, the biggest sample or most dominant sample in that new consciousness will also impact the color of their light.
In response to #3, the colors, shapes, hardness, and even leg count of our bodies completely depends on what planet we are on, meaning on a different planet an architect’s vessel would look completely different from the one I had in source. And for the rest of that, we did have blood however it’s only purpose would help keep our limbs and everything else functional so we can feel things. Yes, we can feel temperatures, pressure, etc. however we are not as fragile as humans, obviously. But yes wherever the hard protective shell on my vessel was thinner is where one could best see the glow of the light in which I emitted. We were kind of built like how insects on earth are, most like wasps in my opinion.
In response to the small paragraph under the first photo, adapting to one’s surroundings and adapting to somewhat mimic the social cues and information of your environment is a huge part of learning and gathering information which my species and myself were notoriously hungry for. (Admittedly I’m really stupid in this life, my knowledge from my life as Al-An didn’t follow me lmao so if I just repeated what you said or something that’s why)
Also for the last sentence, they weren’t so much suggestions as they are my memories of myself and my species, this too- /nm
That being said, continue bouncing things like this back to me, I’m happy to talk about this stuff

Al-an fictionkin draws Robin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I drew Robin the best I could.
She did have the one her in game model has but not for very long, she got tired of trying to keep up with it and put that shi in a bun.
Also, Robin had lots of facial piercings but since it was both really cold and wet all the time she only put them in occasionally to keep the holes open.
Edit; I drew her again and way better

Yo wait are you a fictionkin? -AL-AN fictionkin
So, I am an IRL, and I dunno if that’s the same as a fictionkin, however I will provide a picture of the definition I found online and put it below this and compare and contrast best I can??
Tumblr media
Okay no yeah this is exactly what I am.
So yes I’m a fictionkin of Al-An and I have my own set of memories from source that the player never sees, such as the first person experience of being put in the “time out cube”

Work in progress of subnautica tarot cards for myself. (I won’t be making these in comms until I have a printer available to me)
Peepers are pentacles cause of those big goofy eyes. Also, ideas are welcome should people want to pose ideas for arrangements of things to me. Or just give me general knowledge about the tarot since one can never stop learning about em.

Ranting about Robin as an Al-An Fictionkin
Mostly because I miss her and when I was an architect god dammit
Robin once tried to have me blink into her underwater base (yes in source she had multiple bases, found it more conventional and functional) and I was forced to be sitting at all times because the ceiling was so low for me, however, I didn’t mind. Minus for the first entry because her entrance was purely human sized. (I accidentally poked a hole in the wall)
The time I asked Robin about how human companionship and love works and she spent almost two extra hours awake than what was recommended by her pda explaining it to me, and no I still didn’t understand
I remember how Robin would smile when she made something she went out and searched in a dangerous or far-away spot getting the materials for, she was so proud of herself and it made me happy too!
The time she managed to get her favorite song onto her pda and danced in an emptier large room of her base and danced with me by wiggling and holding onto my normal arms
Robin once asked me if I was autistic or mentally ill when she was very sleepy, her reasoning was the way I stood, the t-rex arm thing, she demonstrated and I didn’t know what it meant at all for awhile
All the rants Robin would go on talking about her home planet and what human families are like, it was genuinely interesting and she seemed happy and both a bit sad to reflect on those memories, she said it was because she misses that life and I can understand that
The time when Robin used me like a horse, climbing my front legs and sitting on my back, I was super confused, her weight also felt extremely weird there. She proceeded to stand up and grab onto my horn-like structures and compared me to a bull.
I remember the several times Robin would absentmindedly lean on me or have a hand on my leg or hook her arm through the leg gap thing, most of the time she didn’t realize she was doing the first two, that was my first introduction to physical affection. It quickly became my favorite thing, it made me feel warm.
I would regularly force my body to walk with Robin, my legs would be decently sore but that was okay, when we were on icebergs. I also remember saving Robin from snow stalkers on countless occasions. The ice worms were admittedly a “no you’re not going there” area. I simply would not allow my first companion in I don’t even know how long to die, especially not like that.
Robin once fabricated a large fuzzy blanket for me at night when I was still allowed to be in her base, I started draping it over me when we went to the icebergs, it was possibly my favorite item (a snow stalker ate it)
Gardening was my favorite activity before me and Robin left the planet, Robin would give me lots of seeds as gifts (some she ate and I was confused by it at first but I didn’t really want to ask since humans are already weird enough)
Robin taught me how to high-five, and hug-
Robin once saw me get caught in a flash avalanche and thought I died since I didn’t immediately respond telling her I was fine and she used her snow fox to rush down the ice to me and saw me almost scorpioned covered in snow. The conversation went something like “how can you even do that with your bone structure” “I don’t know and my back legs won’t go back” she giggles “Robin I require your assistance” she almost burst into laughter before pushing me over to help me. It was not a good day-
