I think that maybe F1blr should spend some time learning about parasocial relationships and how celebrities package themselves for an (online esp) audience pf consumers. Everyone deserves to have a healthy relationship with any medium of content they consume whether its literature, tv, movies or sports. Part of that is not letting yourself getting mentally invested to the point where it takes over your life or catastrophically affects your mood. Yes you’ll feel bad/good when things happen to what team you support. That’s part of why we as humans love sport. But someone being neutral on or disliking those things whether for valid or invalid reasons is not a personal attack on you. If it is something you are personally hurt by, that may be a sign you need to step back. F1, F1 drivers and teams should be something you like and watch, not an intrinsic part of your identity.

Remember that a lot of these drivers do not and will probably never know who you are. I don’t mean that in an insulting way, I mean it in a fan/creator or fan/celebrity way. It’s one-sided inherently. You can’t approach them in real life or in dms as if you are friends and you cant expect the same amount energy you give to be given to you. You do not know them. You know what is shown to you by themselves whether on tv or on social media. We have no idea how much of that is curated, hyped-up or toned-down.

I love Esteban Ocon to bits. I think he’s funny and underrated and sweet so I make gifs and videos and so on of him. I support him in races and feel happy when he does well.

I do not know Esteban. I don’t know his values, ideas or what he finds important. I never will. That’s fine, he’s a person who amuses me and can bring me joy. I would not let that affection for him get in the way were he to do something truly immoral. I would not adjust my view on things to fit his outlook on life simply to validate what he says or thinks. He’s an F1 driver, I like him, I like to watch him drive. When necessary, I can and will severe that ‘bond’ (weird to say) if I need to because as much as I joke about it, being a fan of Esteban isn’t a part of who I am. If he turns out to be an awful person, I will no longer be a fan of him. I understand the version that I liked of him is not who he is.

God knows can be so, so hard to do that. I’ve had to do it earlier this year. He was a man I’d been a fan of for 9 years who had allegations against him that turned out to be disgustingly true. I was 12, when I started watching the content he was in. I watched it throughout high school and my first few years of Uni. Every morning, every night, every weekend. Hours upon hours. It was important to me. But I’m not so devoted to a man who doesn’t know me that I’d throw any morals I hold to support him after such vile actions or approach him actions without criticism.

Keep a healthy distance. Chat in twitch, tweet at them, make memes and edits and gifs if it makes you happy and it is healthy for you to do so. But always remember that the version of this figure in your head is not necessarily who that person is in real life. And that make believe version you create should never be held so dearly to your heart that you validate it by denying reality and that persons real actions.
