the biggest difference between game knuckles and movie knuckles is i think motivation because game knuckles is motivated by duty whereas i think movie knuckles is mostly motivated by revenge

So, what are your thoughts on the times Sonic media has tried to touch on Sonic having a family? I know you've already beat the bush with how the movies handled it so I'll skip that. What did you think of Sonic Underground giving Sonic a mom in Queen Aleena and siblings in Manic and Sonia? And the Archie comic in giving Sonic actual parents with Bernadette and Jules? Plus Sonic SATAM, Archie comics, and Underground bringing in Uncle Chuck?

How did those attempts at giving Sonic a family work?

personally i don’t believe in any form of media giving sonic a backstory. i like that the games just start out guns blazing and then never get into the nitty gritty of sonic & eggman before they started fighting. it’s not necessary. especially since sonic is not a nuclear family sort of franchise.

sonic underground is… eh. i don’t like giving sonic parents. i don’t like sonic being a part of royalty. but sonic manic and Sonia are super fun, the way they bounce off of each other, so i don’t hate them. queen aleena is kind of an ideal scenario for a Necessary Sonic the Hedgehog Parent- fucks off for literally the entire show. i like queen aleena, i think she’s a compelling character who’s been forced to make challenging decisions and who only wants what’s best for her children. so i like the characters established in sonic underground i think they’re fun. but objectively a terrible way to go about giving sonic a family.

archie sonic’s parents aren’t terribly interesting to me? i think Jules is super unique given the fact that iirc he’s forced to stay roboticized due to an injury. bernadette is admittedly not interesting to me. the disconnection between sonic & his parents because they spent so much time away from each other is an interesting concept however. and as for uncle chuck i think he’s fun! it’s always interesting to see an older mobian character and he still manages to have personality.

however it’s my overall opinion that sonic shouldn’t have blood relatives or whatever. i like it vague. i want absolutely no insight into sonic’s backstory or family or whatever. sonic has tails and his army of bffs. that’s enough.

ngl when I see someone say Movie Knuckles is their favorite version of Knuckles I get a little sad

movie knuckles is fine he’s not the worst they could have done (see sonic) but like… idk he just doesn’t have the same flavor as game knuckles. the themes of isolation, duty vs desire, a complete lack of social connection to his heritage and knowing his duty is to protect the master emerald but still not truly understanding his purpose… man.

idk if uve talked about it before so what are your thoughts on movie tails? i dont like their sonic + agree they missed the mark on knuckles probably especially with whatever theyre gonna pull in the show, but i think they did a serviceable tails. ofc i could be biased lol

in essence i think it’s hard to fuck up a character you didn’t really give much spotlight on

movie tails is fine? i don’t think they did anything particularly interesting with him tbh. they had him give all of his backstory in a dialogue. he’s only there to help sonic. he’s knocked out for a majority of the movie.

they also gave him the exact same backstory as sonic? stalking people for an extended period of time and then becoming part of the family. which like if we didn’t have this already with sonic i probably wouldn’t care as much about tails having a “parasocial” relationship with sonic. except sonic did the exact same thing in sonic 1 so it just feels like a repeat

movie tails is probably the closest character to his game version but also sonic 2 did not care about him… like at all. so he was Okay. i wish they did more with him but im sure that would have monkey’s pawed into him getting a lame characterization.

I know you've mentioned being annoyed at people for trying to claim the Sonic movies have the best versions of Tails and Knuckles in over a decade, but what are your thoughts knowing people act the same way with Frontiers in claiming that game also has the best characterization of Tails, Amy, and Knuckles for the first time in over a decade?

And for Tails, even Frontiers acknowledged how badly written Tails was in the 2010s games such as Lost World and Forces with the scene of Tails thinking he is a burden to Sonic and Sonic reassuring him so even Ian Flynn (writer of Frontiers) thinks Tails is badly written in the 2010s games.

i don’t think frontiers is bad by any means. it’s perfectly fine. i wouldn’t say it’s the BEST because i have my nitpick on them being like “we all need to move on from sonic & go on our own adventures” when that’s like… something they do all the time LOL half of the games are caused by them all going on their own adventure and then miscommunicating with each other. im also not entirely sure how i feel about amy’s storyline in the game. but overall i think it’s alright. the character interactions were fun.

i don’t think lost world was that bad tbh but i do think forces was Bad. tails had his arc in sa1 and it seemed like they were trying to replicate it? but did a really shitty job. but i don’t have much beef with lost world tbh the game itself is fine i just hate how reoccurring the zeti became lmao. also if i can be honest here i don’t care what ian flynn thinks. i feel this way about basically any sonic comic writer and most of the sonic game directors.

i don’t necessarily hate them saying it’s the best characterization as much as i do when people talk about the movies because the movie one is just objectively 100% wrong. the characters are NOT like game canon and you can’t make that comparison. but i do think the frontiers one is a little silly as well, depending on the character. knuckles & amy were fine in prior games. i can understand tails however given how forces treated him.

If you think Tails and Knuckles were done badly in the movies, which production do you think they shine the best?

hm well as far as adaptation goes i think sonic x does both of them the best. satam tails is a great tails but i don’t think his kid prodigy shines enough. but i think sonic x does a great job of showcasing knuckles isolation tendencies and tails’s resourcefulness. as far as games go i think their best was probably in sa1- knuckles was allowed to explore his heritage and tails was able to explore himself away from sonic.
