Freshman year in the outerbanks had been hell, trying to mingle and make friends with rich kids is never easy. Everyone has an angle and so did she. Bubblegum pink and diamonds on all her stationary made her standout as some sort of ditz but her grades and vocabulary helped define her from the rest of them.
By junior year she had well enough proven herself to be everyone's favorite rich girl. She never minded splurging on parties and people as long as she looked good, even if it meant people would create rivarly between herself and Rafe Cameron. She never fed into it, for her there were bigger fish to fry, in a manner of speaking. Her parents for instance, though they adored her and why wouldn't they? Her grades were always A's and her teachers gushed over her. She knew she had all the right people in the bag and ready to defend her whenever she needed them.
Rafe was well aware of what game this girl was playing. Sure he felt some envy when someone mentioned the party she was planning or had just thrown while they were attending one of his. But she never made it easier because she would always be at his parties regardless. So as they say, if you can't beat them, join them, and that he did.
-
While everyone else got shitfaced outside at his party he took her upstairs to 'talk'. It didn't take long to have her bent over his bed, her skirt lifted and her pink thong pushed to the side as his dick stroked in and out of her at a hard pace. She'd been a brat for too long and now he was making sure she knew her place.
She wanted to deny how good felt or long she actually wanted this, but his hands started to massage and play with breasts and clit, completely making a mess of her thoughts. All she could focus on is the dirty things he was saying to her and the way his voice was raspy from how hard he was fucking her.
He knew she wasn't going to last much longer, the way her walls were fluttering around him, but she knew the same, she could feel him pulsing in her, it was too much, but it was so good. If he didn't pull out she wouldn't care, she needed it and she made that very clear. They came at around the same time, his mouth latching onto her neck as he did. She knew he was going to leave a hickey but she couldn't care less and either way thats what make up is for and thankfully she had brought her bigger purse tonight.
When it was over, they fixed themselves up and as she was getting ready to leave the room without saying a word to him, she felt the grip of his hand yank her arm towards where he was sat on the bed. The look on his face a mix between smug and serious, "where you going so quick baby?" She giggled, "thought this was a one and done?" He looked at her for a moment as if waiting for her to explain herself "s'that what you want?" He asked her, she scrunched her nose playfully, "I don't know Rafe, I thought I was your rival? That's what everyone else says." Her voice was sweet and soft, and fuck he loved it.
His arms wrapped around her tight, "nah ain't no rivalry you're too pretty to be fighting anyways." She rolled her eyes, "well I hope you know I don't share and I want your undivided attention if we're going to keep this up." Her manicured hands cupping his face as she waited for his answer, "as long as you're all mine we're good mama." She nodded and he loosened his grip on her as he stood up. She wanted the last word though, playfully she said to him, "if you say so Cameron." To which he smacked her ass as they walked out of the room, "I do say so. Now get your cute ass to my table."

Part 5: Pretend You Don't Love Her
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steve kept to his word, though he wondered if he would eventually get grilled by his boss. Still he couldn't deny the way he was always thinking of her. In his mind she was already his, his thoughts reeling back to the way she clung to him the day before, he knew her mind was made up on him like his was for her.
When she stepped out of the house, she looked like herself again, in her pinks and blues, nothing like that outfit she wore at the party. This was his Mia, the baby doll he'd fallen for back in the summer. He was leaned against his car, waiting by the passenger door for her.
She couldn't help the smile on her face as she saw him open the door for her. Once both inside the car she handed him the lunch bag she had in her hand. He took it cautiously, "what's this?" She happily answered, "breakfast sandwich, some cookies, and an orange juice. My way of saying thank you. I know it's really early-" He cut her off, his gaze looking at her softly, wishing he could kiss her then and there, "it's okay bambi we talked about this, it's no problem at all, thank you for the breakfast though."
Her heart was beating out of her chest, the way they were looking at each other, she just knew he felt it too, but she wasn't that kind of girl to use anyone for a rebound. Instead she deflected the moment to getting there on time. Her gaze dropping onto her book bag, but as always he had to have his way and started up another conversation. As he drove they talked over the radio playing in the background. The conversation mostly revolving around her studies and plans for after graduation which weren't many, maybe community college at most.
She shouldn't have mentioned it but her parents only want for her was to marry a good man. However, she got so caught up in her rambling she ended up admitting that a 'good man' just meant good for the family. He listened as she mentioned how they'd probably planned who she would have marry if she hadn't been dating Kevin.
-
Once they got to the school, she instantly regretted agreeing to go back to school, she'd only missed a day, surely it wouldn't matter if she missed one more. She turned to look at Steve, to make up an excuse, he could see it coming any way and put a stop to it. His hand placed on top of hers, "Mia you're a smart girl you don't need to be missing school. Someone tries to give you any shit you call your father's office and i'll come handle it." She huffed, "easy for you to say no one cared what you did everyone was scared of you." He laughed, "believe me everyone is probably scared of you too bambi, your last name is well known around Hawkins too." With an eyeroll she hopped out of the car. He called out for her though, "hey! Like I said. A call away is all." She looked back at him and nodded.
-
As he drove away his mind began to wander back to what she had said about marrying her off to any wise guy they deemed worthy enough. He knew she was being shy, but he would have to start getting more proactive about things if he intended to have her by his side. However he wouldn't have to do too much as Mia unconsciously was playing into his game.
What he didn't take into account is how quickly she would turn to rely on him. How she would stay up some nights just to talk on the phone with him while her parents were asleep, she claimed she just wanted a different point of view on things. Mia knew she what risks she was taking but in her mind it was always a situation that was dealt with as 'friendship'. He worked for her dad, of course he didn't see her in that light, she was just part of the job description. If he wanted to he could have cut it off from the start.
-
That's how she ended up hanging out with him on a lonely Friday night. Both Jenny and Suzie had dates, something she was mentioning to him on one of their infamous catch up calls during the week. It was still early enough in the night that her mother wouldn't question her daughter having last minute plans with her friends.
Steve hearing that his best girl was feeling lonesome wasn't going to let it slide. Of course he pulled some lie to get out of what he was doing at his father's office to go and see her. When he pulled up to her house she was already outside waiting for him, her face filled with excitement and jitters as she hoped her mom wouldn't catch her with him.
They weren't worried about her father because he was out with Steve's dad on business on the other side of town. So the two sped off in his car, the plan was to get food and go hang out at lover's lake for a bit. He felt like his old self with her besides him, like he was back in senior year himself. It'd been so long since he'd let himself feel this sort of way for a girl, not since the first time his heart had been truly broken. Maybe Mia knew about it, but she was a freshman when he was on his way out, so she probably wouldn't have cared much anyways.
-
Lover's lake was relatively empty for a friday night, but that just meant they could be at ease a bit more. Their conversation carried from one thing to another as they ate their burgers and drank their floats and shakes. Mia tried to convince him that her strawberry shake was better than his cola float, but he wasn't having it. The mood was so light, she hadn't realized how close they were in his car.
It wasn't til they finished their food and the conversation moved onto the topic of some notes she'd gotten in her locker that the mood deepened. Steve took a pause after she showed them to him. His mind wandered as she explained they'd come from boys on the team. He nodded along listening to her, but when she saw him place them on the console of the car, she took it as a sign to wait for what he was going to say.
His eyes followed hers, and she trusted his judgement, she knew he probably knew best anyways. Steve ran his hands through his hair, "do you even trust these guys? Because you shouldn't bambi, they knew about what your ex had done and none of them told you? But suddenly they wanna ask you out? Sounds like snakes to me. You don't need those kind of guys around you." She thought to herself, how Steve had known how Kevin wanted to break up with her so was it any different.
What she hadn't realized is she said it outloud though, Steve sighed, "I know and I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, but in my defense I didn't know you the way I know you now. If I had been his friend I would have ratted him out to you the moment it happened. A girl like you deserves the world, and he wasn't ready to give you that." Mia's heart raced out of her chest as she heard the tone in his voice change, lower and breathy.
Gosh she wanted it, to pull him in and kiss him, he was close enough to her, but she shook her head and scooted back from him. This was her moment to put her foot down, "Steve you've been nothing but sweet to me but I can't do this. Whatever you want from me, I can't give you-" "Bambi I don't-" "Please don't start with the nicknames right now. I'm serious, I can't have you be a rebound or be the girl on the side in your life. You're older than me and you work for my dad, it's practically a death sentence." He tried to explain himself to her again, "Mia I don't know where you're getting this-" She scoffed, "I know enough about your history with girls around town Steve, listen just take me home. I don't wanna keep talking about this." True to her word she kept quiet the whole way back to her house.
As she stepped out of his car, he tried one last time to get her to see reason, "Mia I promise you it isn't the way you're thinking things-" she knew better, she always knew better, "I wanted a friend Steve, I can't do more than that. It wouldn't be right to either of us, plus I don't think I could give you what you're used to getting, at least not the way you go about it. Let's just leave this as it is, you work for my dad and I go to school, done deal. Goodnight." With that she shut his car door and ran off inside her house. His girl slipped right out of his hands.
-
There wasn't much time for him to let his feelings linger and dwell, with work being a distraction and his priority, Steve woke up the next morning and got ready to take out his pain on whatever fucker he got send to deal with. The drive to the office felt like hell, every other song on the radio was one that she had sung along to. He wasn't a quitter but he would have to back away for the moment, still he'd prove to her sooner or later that they're meant to be.
It was like a switch had flipped when he got in. Normally all the guys hung around the front, but today it was empty, unless he was there earlier than everyone else. His father's secretary telling him that he's waiting for Steve in his office. Something seemed off, and as he entered the office, he saw Mia's father talking to his dad. But as soon as Mr. Romano caught sight of Steve, he had pressed against a wall, his fist about to collide with the younger man's face when his father stepped in, "ask him first before you kill him." To which he spat out, "the fuck were you doing with my little girl at lover's lake last night." Steve was fucked, regardless of his answer, he was fucked.

this made me think
Tumblr media
imagine breaking up with rafe and knowing you only have moments, as he processes everything, to get away because otherwise he wouldn't let you get the chance. so you take off as fast as you can hoping you make can it far enough away from to call a friend somewhere and pick you up.
you think you're getting away you've made it pretty far from tannyhill but you keep running when you suddenly feel the engulfing of his arms around you picking you up off the ground. you try to break his strong grip on you, "rafe no please let me go!" you practically cry trying to get his arms unwrapped from you.
he laughs mockingly, "its cute you thought you could runaway like that but you ain't going nowhere mamas. you're mine and only mine remember?" rafe knew you loved him and things were hard right now so he wasnt going to really punish you but he would have to handle you. he lets you tire yourself out trying to get him to let you go. the crying and fighting wearing you to the point you become weak enough for him to place you back in the home as he planned what renovations he'd have to make to keep you from trying another stunt like that again.

(a/n: this chapter will focus on the troubled teen industry, which I did research on during one of my law classes back in college. its a sensitive topic so you can totally skip this chapter its sort of filler of what happened during their time apart from each other '10- early 2011.)

Purgatory ( the months of failures and success 2010-2011)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It all happened so quickly, which she had prepared for mentally. She didn't fight whatever was happening, she was just told that they were taking her to where she would get help. Placing her in a van with blacked out windows, she stared at her parents wondering why they ever even chose to become parents. The van drove for a whole day, no one spoke to her after the first couple of miles, they only spoke to explain what would happen when she got to the 'boot camp'.
Her belongings were taken from her and she was told that her parents placed her in the program because of her behavior. Instantly, she knew this was going to be like a prison. Every day was some sort of manual labor and any sort of attitude or supposed disobedience was met with all sorts of punishments from cleaning to being made to sleep out in the woods for as many nights as they deemed necessary. Sometimes they wouldn't get dinner, and the food wasn't even a meal just small things.
She never bothered to write to her parents or use her calls on them. Just to her best friend to ask how people were, still even that was heavily monitored. It was though, how she found out about Eddie leaving Hawkins and about the band blowing up. In her heart she was happy for him, but a part of her broke knowing she wasn't with him. Still her friend always reassured her that Eddie had loved her and even told Julie about what he did at her parent's house. It was the only small bit of hope she clung to when it came to him.
During those months in her incarceration she had made friends with a girl who was similar in age to her. Her name was Charlotte which she hated because of the book and how growing up people always asked if she was named after it. They both bonded over their style and music taste, which got them into more trouble at times. One night it even led to both of them having to sleep in the woods, which was something they tried to avoid from happening again.
Due to their closeness in age, they were both brought into some sort office in the facility, where they were told they would be getting released out of the program soon. In the state they were currently in, they could not be held after eighteen which technically meant they were free to leave. When they did get released Julie had made a decision to do like Eddie and leave Hawkins behind. There wasn't any real reason to go back to that place. Graduation and prom had already happened by the time she was out.
Charlotte had mentioned how she had planned to go to New York, in her possessions was a credit card her grandma had given her. She had mentioned to Julie that her family was wealthy and only really did this to her to get rid of her for some time. It was fucked, and Charlotte agreed but didn't really care because she was just going to start over. Julie asked if she could join her, promising that she would work for her end of whatever payments or bills that had to be paid. Her new friend shrugged saying it wasn't that big of a deal.
-
Inheritance had been a hell of a savior, as soon as they bought their plane tickets and landed in New York, they had a place to stay. Julie hadn't gone into the facility with much. She had brought her phone but it hadn't been paid, so no service, and her wallet only had twenty bucks and her ID's. Apart from that was a small duffel of clothes her parents had packed for her. So once they arrived and cleaned up, Charlotte let her use the card she had to buy new clothes and what not.
Within the month they had started to make do with their situation. Where Charlotte didn't really care for finding a job, Julie did and when she found one she started saving to have enough to replace her belongings and pay for rent. Eventually though Charlotte did get a job working for a friend of her family, who was close to her grandmother.
In-between all the working and saving though, they started going out to the clubs around the Manhattan area. Documenting everything through pictures and being asked back by promoters who had found both girls 'pretty' enough to help bring people in. It was how Julie ended up befriending Alexa Chung one night. She had no clue who this girl was, but everyone around them at the club did, and at the same time, Julie and Charlotte were just as popular in that spot. It led to them talking about it the whole night and soon enough Alexa's agency wanted to talk to both of the girls.
By the late summer the girls had signed onto a modeling agency and gotten approved for work visas to enter the UK. Julie wasn't as picky as her friend had been about everything, she started doing ads for shops and magazines, being a guest interviewer for music channels and online radio shows. People loved her sweet demeanor and cheeky manner. Lottie never held it against her, she knew Julie didn't grow up in the limelight like she had so she let her friend make her way on her own.
With this new freedom, it didn't take long for her to make drastic changes. She didn't want to be found and she didn't want her past to exist anymore, so with her agent and publicist she got on a flight to Indianapolis and signed all the paperwork that would change her name, she'd chosen something slightly foreign and bubbly sounding, Francesca Thompson, the name added with a nickname, Frenchie, was a hit, her team agreed the decision to make the change helped her career immensely.
-
Frenchie had been reborn and her popularity in the indie scene had begun to bloom. Everyone spoke about her as Alexa Chung's sister from another mister. However, where Alexa was dating someone in her scene, Frenchie had a thing for guys who reminded her of the guy who had stole her heart. Though she never wanted to forget Eddie, she knew by looking at his social media and magazine articles that he had moved on. She was happy for him though, she always look out for him and the band, but now as a fan. By the end of 2010, she had found herself with this new guy who was coming up with his band.
He was something of a mix between Julian Casablanca and Oli Sykes but he wasn't either and his band was well into the metal scene. Nothing about him was similar to Eddie though, they didn't click as quickly but his piercings and tattoos made her feel like she could make believe. Both of them were on the come up and their fans ate up their relationship.
They entered the new year with his band and her modeling gigs blowing up. Their names synonymous with each other's careers. It was beginning to get easy to forget what once had been. She was a whole new person in love with someone who was close enough to home without the pain it once carried.
-
Eddie was touring, the band growing in success and notoriety through the approval of all the older groups who insisted that Corroded Coffin carried the spirit of metal into the present day. Ever the front man he didn't mind being on the front page if meant people were tuning into what the band was playing. Of course it wasn't what he wanted the focus to be on, but he'd grown up on Fred Durst doing outlandish shit all the time so what did it really matter?
He'd tried to look for her every once in a while, but there was nothing to be found. Julie's best friend had only mentioned once that Julie was safe, but what did that mean and why wouldn't she speak to him? He never got answers, but in his heart she was always going to be his first true love. Where ever she was he only hoped she thought of him the way he thought of her, but he moved onto someone new.
-
In September of 2011, there was a business party for her boyfriend's record label, of course he took her as his plus one. The night was going well til she saw them walk in, there he was with the boys. They looked so different now, well put together and groomed, something she'd never seen Eddie as before. They didn't speak, she stood beside her boyfriend the whole night.
Only for a brief moment did they pass each other as she went to grab some more drinks from the open bar. He just barely glanced at her apologizing for reaching over her to get some beers from the ice bucket beside her. Though their eyes met, its as if they were complete strangers. Her hair was platinum blonde now, his was cut short and there was a stud in his ear where there hadn't been a couple years back.
That night when she got back to her place, she lied about a migraine from the drinks to get her boyfriend to let her be for the night with the promise of brunch in the afternoon. In reality she spent the remainder of the night crying in her bed to an old picture she had of her and Eddie from their last hang out at the band's gig.
Meanwhile Eddie got drunk that night, his mind thinking back to how familiar that blonde at the bar looked. His mind couldn't piece it together, how something about her eyes reminded him of someone or something. However with the liquor in his system and a flight in the morning he started to forget about her as quickly as he thought about her in the first place.

Senior Year, 2009
The summer before the start of senior year had been one of the best summers of both of their lives. Corroded Coffin won a battle of the bands competition to play at the local Warped Tour in Indiana, which ended up being a road trip that somehow Julie was able to convince her parents was for senior year college prep classes for a week.
The week of Warped came at the end of July and they spent it at small gigs around the area of where the festival was going to be held. After one of the gigs, early on in the week, Julie and Eddie had found themselves somewhat high and wanting to find a quiet spot at the after party. When they did, it didn't take long for the weed to let a boost of confidence allow for him to tell her how much she meant to him.
She listened, where her heart would have been beating out of her chest, the weed seemed to have calmed her enough to allow it all to happen the way it did. Taking her hands into his she reciprocated it back, "i'm always going to be here for you and I always knew you were gonna make it-" his voice cutting her off but softly saying, "and now that we're here I want you beside me for all of it." No more needed to be said, by the look in his eyes, she knew what he was scared to say, she was scared too, but nodded. The nod, letting him know that this was happening. There in that room they shared their first kiss and then some. They left party that night with a new sense of peace and holding each other's hands. Stupid goofy smiles on their faces as they prepared themselves for the rest of the week.
The festival itself ended up being insane, their set wasn't huge but she was able to record it for their page. Even from the stage they were on Eddie kept looking at her the whole time. With each song they played their crowd started growing until there was a decent size of people gather moshing and head banging along to the band. They were all red in the face by the end of the set and in the back of his head Eddie was thankful his girl packed the sunscreen, but it didnt stop the sunburn from still getting them.
-
Being in a band that was blowing up in popularity, having a beautiful girlfriend, and trying to graduate high school was a shit ton of pressure that Eddie had never thought he would endure. Most of his favorite bands were made up of drop outs, but he knew Julie would kill him if he didn't walk the stage with her. Despite his hate for school and Hawkins itself, she was the angel who he would fight this hellscape for.
While he assumed she must have been having an easier time with it all, in reality Julie was having the hardest time keeping her parents from finding out about her relationship. She wasn't ashamed to be seen with Eddie, most of the school if not all had already seen her pictures of the new couple on her myspace and live journal. The only people who were out of the loop were her parents. She knew they would either kill her or him if they found out.
All her physical photos of them were kept hidden in a box filled her old memories from elementary to more recent stuff like birthdays with her best friend, and now Eddie and her at the festival. He knew to some extent that it would be a while before she could have that talk with her parents, in all honesty she was waiting for her eighteenth to come around so she could leave in case it all went to hell, which she felt it probably would. It wouldn't take that long, just a couple of months.
-
Those couple of months went by so quickly with school work and parties/gigs every other weekend. Sneaking out had become so much of a habit it was basically a reflex she had perfected. December had come as quickly as senior year had. They had taken their senior photos already and were hoping to get them into the year book later on after Christmas break. Thankfully Julie knew some of the girls on the committee who could do it.
Sadly, she would be spending that holiday break with her family, nonstop. He knew it would be better to lay low until at least New Years, but that didn't mean that they weren't constantly talking and texting each other at every chance. She did her best to keep it private, away from her nosy aunts and uncles. It worked well for the holidays and even into the New Year, nobody had suspected anything and it seemed that she would be able to do things as she had planned. Both her and Eddie were excited, mapping out every city they would visit after graduation and where the band would start their tour at.
-
Cruel doesn't even begin to explain the way things happened though. It was a late January afternoon when screaming could be heard from her house. Inside her parents were fighting with her over the photos they had found with the excuse that her mom was putting away laundry when she saw the box. It was all out in the air now and she couldn't do anything but watch as they held her life in their hands. They didn't end up destroying anything, but swore there would be a punishment.
In a matter of minutes she had called her best friend to come take her things. Through bedroom window her friend Promising that no matter what happened, she needed to keep her things safe and hugging her with the hopes that it wouldn't be anything too serious. Then texting Eddie that she loved him, something she was scared of admitting and hoping to have told him in a better way, but she wasn't sure if that would even be a possibility now.
-
It had been two days since Eddie got that message from her, and since he hadn't heard from her at all. She hadn't been at school and any time he drove past her house he couldn't see into her room like he used to be able to. After the fourth day, her best friend delivered the punch to the gut, she'd spoken to him after school, handing him the pictures of them at all the parties and gigs. She mentioned how they'd sent her off to some boot camp, they never told her where exactly but simply told her to not ask for Julie again. That their influence on her is the reason why they had to take the measures they did.
The one good thing in his life was gone, the person who saw him as more than a fuck up, his girl wasn't here anymore. He had nothing left to lose in his personal hellhole, so he did what he shouldn't have. It only took two knocks for her mom to open the door, a look of disgust instantly appearing on her face. But he wasn't going to let her get a word in "yeah, yeah you hate me so fucking what?! She loved you two assholes! You didn't deserve the daughter you were given. You fucked up her mind and she did everything to try and please you guys like gods but even that wasn't enough. I hope you guys rot in hell, I really do. She was an angel and you clipped her fuckin wings." Sealing the deal he flipped her off watching as the old hag stood there in shock, then spit on the welcome mat she stood on before leaving.
Not even some days after that, he left Hawkins with the rest of the band. Before the hag and her devil husband could press any sort of bullshit charges, he left. His friends didn't care about graduating either, the band was their ticket out, he promised his uncle he would do right by him and Julie, where ever she was. The gigs came steady around Indiana and soon enough they were touring in other states. At one of the gigs Gareth ended up befriending the touring manger for Linkin Park's last tour and conversations led to pen on paper and signatures being written all over the place. There was no turning back for Eddie, it was here and now and it would be for her even if he never saw her again.

Junior Year, 2008
Something had happened during the first couple of months of junior year. Eddie wasn't acting the way he usually had been last year. She noticed it happening before her. He had started ditching again to the point he just wasn't showing up most of the week. His replies were either paragraphs long or nothing and no calls anymore. He wouldn't talk to her at parties anymore either, just sell what he came with and head out.
In his head, Eddie was trying to spare her from his bullshit. His dad been trying to get him to go clear his name at his upcoming trial. Trying to push some bullshit about his mom and how she would have wanted him to do that for her. He hung up on him then and there, he remembered the countless times the psycho smacked his mom around like a ragdoll. He never forgot how he would hold his mom after his dad would leave her with bloody noses or a busted lip. She died trying to get away from him and it was some shit Eddie would never forgive his dad for.
He wanted to do right by Julie and his uncle, but people around Hawkins already saw him one way so it didn't really matter what happened with school. The thing he had left was the band and that was gonna be his ticket out. This was the year he was gonna try to get them onto the warped tour setlist. Fuck school and a diploma, it wouldnt mean shit compared to a platinum record and touring around the world.
Still he tried to do some justice by her, showing up to his classes. Not really doing shit but not causing a stir either. Julie was happy to see him sort of going back to his old self. She tried to figure out what happened and why he'd been awol for the last couple weeks. He brushed her off, and while she didn't wanna admit it, it hurt like hell to have him treat her like that.
Jeff had noticed how his friend had been off with her and at one the band practices he did his best to let her know that she was probably the only girl he actually cared about. Still it didn't feel like it sometimes, and either way they were just friends. As she watched them practice she realized it was probably time to drop whatever she thought was happening.
That weekend she didn't even text him where she was going to be at. They had started going to backyard shows together, usually it was where they'd be if she wasn't feeling up to partying. He started wondering where the hell she was tonight, her calls were going to voicemail and she wasnt replying to her messages. By nine he had messaged everyone he knew about where the parties were at this week, but the only party was at some abandoned house in the woods.
Liquor and weed is a hell of a good way to forget whatever makes you feel like shit. That was something Julie had learned her freshman year of high school, even before Eddie was in the picture, she felt like she was fucking everything up. Her parents had no problem verbally and emotionally abusing her, telling her what she could do better or how they had gave up their dreams for her. None of that shit mattered here, the music was blasting her eardrums and jungle juice was being poured to her by people she never hung out with in school.
It took Eddie a while to find her in-between all the people she was around. Her friend was the first person to notice him, she tried to get Julie's attention, when she eventually did, she pointed at him. Julie turned to look at him waving at her. She just nodded acknowledging him, but not really caring. Maybe he had that coming for how he had been with her lately but it still hurt like hell.
He knew it looked weird to follow her around, but he did it anyways. He didn't want any weirdo near her, usually she was with his friends or nearby him at parties so it wasn't that big of a deal. Eventually she pulled him aside to an empty-ish spot, her head jumbled by everything she'd consumed, she tried her best to sound somewhat sober, "dude I don't know why you're following me. Go have fun like everyone else." Julie had resigned herself to whatever was going to come from this.
Eddie looked at her confused the music was too loud, his head tilting down and his right hand gently gripping her upper arm, "I don't know anyone here. I came because I wanted to talk to you, you havent answered any of my texts or calls." He pulled away, her gaze following his, frustration and every other emotion building up, "is there anything to really be said? I mean you've brushed me off all week. Like cool I know that life is shit but you don't have to be a dick." She shrugged, "listen I just wanna have a good night tonight, I'm not arguing with you here." He shook his head, his voice defeated as he spoke to her, "I don't wanna argue either. I know I've been a dick lately, I'm sorry. Julie you're the coolest fuckin person ever, please I don't want you to be mad at me. I'll do anything! I'll fuckin get on my knees and beg." To which he actually did, this making her laugh and forcing him to get up off the dirt beneath them.
She hated how she couldn't be mad at him. How quickly she made up with him, but Eddie was just someone she couldn't deny. He spent the rest of the night dancing with her and following her around. The night didn't end as planned, Julie had gone to go get her friend away from some guy who was overdoing it, to which he tried to yell at her about cock blocking. Eddie threw one punch and the guy was out, but it caused enough of a scene for them to leave the party early. Julie knew he meant well so she didn't really hold the situation against him and even her friend had thanked him.
-
What neither of them expected was that he would run into the guy at school the following week. He was mostly just shit talking Eddie and his friends, which they were all used to, but by Thursday it had gotten ridiculous. At lunch time Eddie had become fed up of the guy, it was the same insults and shit talk about how it wasn't even a fair fight because he was drunk. The guy followed them to their table in the back of the cafeteria and kept at his bullshit, so biting the bullet Eddie finally told him to "stop barking like a bitch and accept the fact he got knocked out" to which the guy threw his backpack at him. Both her friend and one of Eddie's stopped her from getting in the middle of it as soon as it had started.
Eddie didn't wanna have problems with anyone but this guy had pushed all the buttons. First there was the incident at the party and now he had gone too far, he let the dickhead throw the first swing, which he missed and then swung back. The punches kept going back and forth just trying to get a hit in where ever either of the two could land. He wasn't sure when it happened during the fight, but this guy had thrown his skateboard off him. He'd been carrying it between the straps of his backpack for most of the day before the guy knocked off him.
It happened in less than minute but the action felt like slow-mo. She saw Eddie grab his board and swing it at the guy's face, like that scene in Wanted. The board broke and all that anyone heard was the crack of the wood. People scattered, her friend and Eddie's tried to get her to scatter, but she couldn't or wouldn't, Julie was frozen in her seat at the table. Both the principal and some teachers had showed up, someone called for an ambulance and she was taken to the office as a witness of the fight.
-
The yelling could be heard from the nearly quiet front office, everyone was trying to find out what happened. Staff even tried asking Julie, who still chose not to say anything. She knew Eddie could have a temper but she'd never seen it like that before. He might have done it now, but she was hoping for the best. Eddie and his uncle had been in there for a while with the principal.
She was waiting on her mom to get there. It irritated her that they had called for their parents. Mostly because she knew her mom would hold this situation against her, use it as more ammo against her social life and reason to have her sent to a private school. When her mom finally showed up and sat behind her she started her rambling, "you know Wayne was the better half of him and his brother. Poor man, he should have left that brat to the system." Julie was sure she hated her mother by that point.
After nonstop claim after claim that Hawkins was heading down the drain, it came to halt as the door to the principal's office opened and out came the Munson men looking slightly defeated and annoyed. The principal then called for Julie to come in, her mother giving Eddie's uncle a small hello before entering the office. It didn't take long to figure out that whatever she said was going to royally fuck things up for Eddie if she didn't word it right.
Ultimately she ended up calling the situation self defense even if it did go too far, that she blamed on teenage boys being hormonal and dumb. Her mother wasn't buying it, she kept repeating to her to be honest, which Julie had to assure the principal she actually was being as honest to the situation as she could be. When it was over with Eddie and his uncle got called back in. By then Julie and her mom had left, and he was given a week's suspension, told that he got lucky he was still seventeen (by some months) and that he needed to get himself straightened out.
As Eddie and his uncle left the school premises, they walked out to a shouting match between Julie and her mom. He heard as Julie argued that she wasn't defending him so much as that's just how things really happened. He knew her mom like the rest of the town mostly hated him, but this was as close as he figured she could get to looking out for him. What he didn't expect was to see her mom smack her, before he could even react Wayne had already gone over there.
The two adults were having it out like they knew each other, which maybe in a past life they did. Julie ended up going to talk to Eddie while they spoke, "sorry you had to see that." He shook his head, "are you okay? What the fuck is wrong with her?" She shrugged, "so much for pretending to be a caring mother." He wanted to hold her then and there but he had to stop himself knowing it'd probably get her in more trouble. Eventually the conversation ended and Julie left with her mom still yelling at her. Wayne told Eddie that some people never change.
-
That weekend she didn't go out, she got grounded, her parents took her phone, but left her laptop so she could do homework. Again she was thankful they had no clue how the internet worked. She ended up messaging him on myspace for the rest of the night on Friday and learning that his band had a gig on Saturday. Julie didn't know it, but the way she had vouched for him had taken on a bigger effect on Eddie than what she could have imagined.
He spent that weekend dedicating the band's sets to her, one of his friends recording the videos for their youtube page while she was locked away in her room. Eddie knew he was fucked, he was falling head over heels for a girl he'd only met last year, but it didn't matter, in his mind, he'd known her a whole fucking life time. Even his friends hyped her up for the way she defended him and didn't leave the scene. His uncle felt bad for her, he said he'd known her mom when she their age and she'd really taken a turn. However, his uncle felt that what Julie had done meant a hell of alot more than what most would have done considering it was Eddie. That was all the reassurance he needed to have to know that she was the one.
At the same time as he was coming to realize this, the band was looking for a way in and while he was sure he could multitask, his focus had always been getting out of Hawkins. Now he had to account for an extra stowaway, which he didn't have a problem with at all.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sophomore year, 2007
Eddie had repeated the eighth grade, so when he started high school, he should have been sophomore, but his uncle was determined that kid needed to be held back, his teachers too, he's wasn't stupid but living with his dad in the early years of his childhood had fucked with his education. He either did or didn't go depending if his dad was on the run for jacking a car or something. So much for no child left behind, and in Hawkins of all places, they would hold him back as much as they could, not just in school, but in life too. Most of the student body saw him as trailer trash and nothing more. His uncle had taken him in before he entered middle school, and while he tried his best to stay out of trouble, he wasn't gonna let assholes bad mouth the only real father figure he had.
It didn't matter though, he'd gotten his shit somewhat together to get into high school. Barely passing and not really caring, he wanted to at least try and get his diploma for his uncle's sake. System of a down was blasting from his best friend's room. He'd known Jeff for some time and even though his parents didn't like the 'influence' Eddie had on him, he was thankful for him. Jeff had been one of the few kids who actually thought Eddie was cool. They'd been friends since, and he was kind enough to let him hang at his place afterschool, where'd they'd use his computer to post band stuff and update their myspace accounts.
Today though Ed had gotten lucky. He'd jacked some kid's locker and scored an ipod in there. Sure stealing was wrong, but he was broke, too broke at least to afford an ipod. He'd spent the summer trying not to get caught working for his dad's friend to make enough for the iphone. It was easy money in reality, but he knew his uncle wouldn't have been happy to know he was selling drugs to people. The phone was easier to hide than what'd he'd been up to in the summer, even then he still sold every once in a while. Band equipment and his car were never ending needs he had to deal with.
The plan had always been the band, he'd learned to play the guitar on his own accord, rock music was his home away from home. It helped having friends like Jeff who understood what music was really about. Anything they ever earned at a gig was saved in a one of those gallon jugs, they were midway but the hope was to make enough to get to LA or New York and get a studio session. Their live demos and shotty youtube videos got them some online views but not enough to call the attention of anyone yet.
-
Julie had a whole different life from his. Her parents were loving sociopaths, who controlled her life as best they could. Nevertheless, it didn't do much. She would still sneak around and hang at house parties on the weekends or get drunk at sleepovers with her best friend. She was well known online as a party girl and whether it was her myspace or livejournal she had somewhat of a following for her antics.
At most she was thankful her parents had no clue about the internet. They'd gotten her a digital camera and an ipod with no clue what she really did with them. They were naive at best but could be ruthless at worst. They'd take away her things for months on end if they felt she had been on some sort of weird or rude behavior. It didn't stop her though. Despite her popularity online, in school it was a whole quieter ordeal. Sure she was known, but people only want to associate with others under certain circumstances. Her group was small, and the outfits she'd wear on a friday night weren't what'd she'd been seen in on a monday morning in class.
She wasn't a genius by any length but she wasn't an idiot, she was getting by with decent grades and fake persona for her teachers and parents. It's the only thing she had to keep them from really looking into who she really was, or was at least trying to be.
-
Blame the internet, they met through their myspace accounts. She had mentioned one of their songs or more like she was looking for one of their songs because they had played at a party she had gone to the weekend before. Eddie couldn't believe he didn't know her, they went to the same high school and were in the same grade. They started talking almost immediately, about everything and anything.
It didn't take long for cellphone numbers to be exchanged and to agree to finally meet at lunch. She had told him not to ditch for her lunch period but he didn't really care about it. To Eddie she was someone who finally understood what he was trying to do here. They were both surprised when they finally met up, she swore she could feel her heart racing out of her chest. It was one thing to talk on the phone or through text, but being actually with him felt like something else.
He felt the same way about near her, she had mentioned to him that he probably didn't recognize her because she wasn't wearing the kind of stuff she usually wore on the weekends out. Its what they ended up talking about that whole lunch period, about how few moments they had where they could really be themselves. Only difference is Julie still felt her parents held the control in her life. That's something Eddie no longer tied him down. Still, he felt for her, from their long talks on the phone and at lunch, he was getting to know this girl for who she really was and that mattered to him. He even ended up walking her to class.
Her friends did give her a couple of glances when she walked into class that day. Questions on why she was hanging out with him and who even was he? One of her classmates heard her mention his name and said Eddie had always been chaotic and liked to start shit for fun. Sure she could have listened to them, but all the stuff they were saying didn't matter because she knew him well enough after a month or so of talking to him, to know that if he came off that way it was intentional.
From that point on, they would try to hang out as much as they could. Parties and after school days when she would go over to his place, despite him initially saying that she probably wouldn't wanna be seen at a trailer park. She honestly didn't care, all that mattered was not being near her hellhole house and that she was able to do her homework. Meanwhile he played guitar hero for her and showed her songs he was working on. Every now and then she would try and get him to do his homework too, which would in turn lead to them not doing anything because he'd use anything as a means of distraction.
Then there was a week when he got suspended for accidentally bringing a pocket knife to school. He told her he had been helping his uncle fix up a patch on the roof and forgot he had left the knife in his jeans pocket but they probably just wanted an excuse to get him out of their hair. His teachers ended up confused when she showed up that week asking for the notes and missing assignments he would have. Maybe she shouldn't have but she did them for him and when they met up on friday night she handed them in exchange for a couple of pre rolled joints and some tabs.
He watched as she went off with her girlfriends that night and got blacked out. They were only getting to know each other though, he didn't wanna overstep anything with her, but he made sure she got home alright. The following Monday it was as if it had never happened and he didn't really mind.
Sophomore year had been a trial and error of getting to know each other and figuring out how the friendship would work. By the summer they had it down, they were comfortable enough with each other to not really care too deeply about things, but also were practically glued to one another. She met the rest of the band and his other friends. She'd shoot their sets for them and post them on their youtube, hell she even added them to her top five. Of course everyone around them could see that there was more going on between the two but neither Eddie nor Julie were going to ruin whatever they had going on already to start something intimate.

Part Four: Bad Boy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They'd let the time pass, she was mostly herself again. Though he kept having to calm her down. Holding her and whispering that her parents wouldn't be mad. He was figuring out how he'd twist the truth this time. Nothing new, just the usual white lies and hopefully the assignment given to him to handle this kid. He wanted his second shot at this, one where the guy would be sober and wouldn't collapse without learning his lesson first.
He could see her visibly shaking as they walked to her front door. As gently as he could sound, he assured her, "everything is going to be okay sweetheart. I promise they won't be mad at you. I'm going to make sure of it." Steve knocked on the door, Mia looked at the floor, her mind racing and scared. As soon as her father opened the door and his eyes met his daughter's, Mia broke down, her arms wrapping around her father's bigger frame, frantically apologizing as he stood there entering some sort of surprise. Her father looked over her to Steve, who looked back at the man with a knowing look.
Her mother heard her from upstairs, her voice frantic trying to understand what was happening. Taking control of the situation, her dad got her to go upstairs with her mom and get cleaned up then head to bed. Then he motioned for Steve to follow him to his office. Steve didn't smoke that often but this had been some night, his boss could tell. They sat down as Steve continued to smoke his cigarette, his boss didn't waste any time, "who the fuck am I killing?" Steve shook his head, before explaining everything while skipping over other parts. To say the older man was enraged would be an understatement. Of course Steve suggested, "boss, listen I spoke to the kid at her party and already handled him tonight, let me just finish with the mess I made." He knew his boss would buy it, because it was technically his mess. Still the man pretended to contemplate it, then he spoke, "don't make a spectacle alright I don't want any people on my back about this." Steve smiled, putting his cigarette out on the ash tray, "of course."
True to his word, he'd planned this thing like a mad man. Even figured out the kid's schedule. They say anger is one of those things that either dies out or consumes you. Well Steve was drowning in it; he hadn't felt the way he felt last night in some years. Seeing Mia running into the street like that made something in him snap, a girl like that suddenly becoming into a scared little thing. He'd known from the jump she could do better, it wasn't right that she had to learn that the way she did. Then to hear that the guy was shoving her around like ragdoll, he was glad he was getting a second chance at him now.
Steve pulled up to the school's parking lot, it'd been some time since he'd walked on that asphalt but even now, he felt like he owned the place still. Practice was ending, it was ironic, the night before the kid was drunk as could be and now he was trying to trot his way around the football field. Soon as he saw him, he headed towards him, "Kevin man I just wanna talk. Promise." He said with a smile, his hands in the air to put on more of a show. The guy's eyes were wide as plates practically, of course the kid knew he was fucked, but that was his own undoing.
He waited around, talking about bullshit, hell he even entertained the old coach. Until everyone cleared, leaving them two in the parking lot next to Kevin's car, he would give him that much of a kindness. Steve had been smoking a cigarette, which he put out the second it was just the two of them, "so last night.." the younger boy immediately started rushing words out, "listen man I really don't remember that much. I heard so much shit and I probably deserve it. I didn't even get a chance to give Mia her sweater back. I'm really sorry if I hurt her feelings." Steve was beyond amazed that the fucker really was gonna go through with this story.
Scoffing, he shook his head, "you really don't remember shit? Geez that's a shame kid, because you're right you should be sorry." Then came the first punch straight to the gut. Bent over in initial pain gave Steve access to give one to the head. The kid fell over onto the ground now, "you put your fuckin hands on her" Steve remembering how frightened Mia looked as she told him how he pushed around.
Kevin tried to get some punches in but it was useless. Steve was older and heavier, he'd fought men tougher than this kid. Moreso, he was pissed that this arrogant prick tried to humilate his girl. His knucles were red and cut up some from somewhat missing and hitting the gravel at times, but his anger still surged through, "I told you last night what I'm gonna tell you right now." He grabbed him by the shirt, "you had one shot and you fucked yourself over." It was over but he still kicked him in the back final, "consider this your final warning from me and her father. Go near her? You're dead." Maybe it was too far but he spit on him, "and if anyone asks you had an accident." All he heard were groans of pain as he walked back to his own car.
His boss was more than thrilled to hear that the matter had been dealt with and Steve was more than satisfied to finally do what he should have done the moment he was first introduced to the kid. Henderson said that on Monday he didn't show up, but the rumor was he had gotten robbed and left badly beaten. Who started the rumor? Who knew and who cared. All that Steve cared about was that there were no loose ends to tie, he knew that little shit wouldn't squeal. Everything else that had happened at that party was already a disappearing haze anyways.
-
Mia however, had spent her weekend locked up in her room, she had taken down all the photos she had with him. Everything she had known was gone now. Her friends called her the morning after, trying their best to cheer her up or help her see the bright side of being single. It wasn't so much so that she was upset about being broken up with. It was the implication that she was frigid, that she had been a bore the whole way through. He had cheated on her, she had done everything for him and he repaid her with the worst betrayal.
Monday came around, Mia still remained locked up in her room, her parents tried to get her to go to school, but she'd mentioned that her friends were going to give her whatever homework and notes she'd missed. Her mother had tried to get her to go shopping with her for groceries as a means to get some fresh air, even that she refused. There was a shame she wasn't escaping, she'd rather stay home for the rest of her life if she could.
There was a knock at the front door, it was still early morning, both of her parents weren't home. She went to the kitchen as quietly as she could and grabbed a knife before going heading to the door. From behind the living room window's curtain she looked to see who it was. She saw Steve standing there, her heart was still racing but not as much as it had been a moment go. She went to open the door placing the knife on the console table by the door way.
As she opened the door, he smiled at her, "how ya been sweetheart." She shrugged not really wanted to talk, her eyes caught sight of his bandaged hands, "what happened?" She asked quietly, concern still showing through as she took his hands into hers. He shrugged, "work is work ya know nothing too crazy, I'm okay hun." She didn't believe it of course, but she knew it wasn't her place to ask him anything deeper than that.
Still quietly she asked, "what are you doing here? My dad should be at his office." He gave her a small smile, "yeah he said your ma had cleaned my blazer." Her eyes widened, "oh my gosh your blazer! I'm so sorry I meant to give you-" with a small laugh he cut her off, "you're fine bambi. It looked good on you anyways." She smiled then scrunched her face, "bambi?" He shrugged, "your eyes got all big like the deer in the movie." She rolled her eyes, moving away from the door she points for him to enter "get in the house. I'll go get your blazer." Before he could mutter out some faux apology, she ran up the stairs. That's when he noticed the knife on the table.
Was no one on watch duty? He looked out the window again trying to find a familiar car, someone always needed to be on watch for his boss' place of work and home. He heard her footsteps coming back, one hand on the railing and the other holding his blazer, he spoke without thinking, "were you holding this knife before you saw it was me?" She was on the final step of the stairs, her eyes following to where his hand was placed on top of the kitchen knife. Mia wasn't sure what to say, "yes?" He took a moment to think, "why aren't you in school? Also where is your mother?" She sighed, beginning to quietly mutter out "I don't want to be seen like this, I didn't feel like going today." Handing him his blazer she continued, "my mom'll be back soon, she went to go get the groceries." It was his turn to sigh now, "where's your house phone? I gotta make a call." She showed him the phone on the wall in the kitchen and then went to sit in the living room.
Mia could hear the whole conversation, he was talking to someone who obviously wasn't either of their fathers, his answers sounding annoyed at first and then pissed off. She knew by the midst of it that it was because no one was watching the house, she'd met all the guys who usually are on watch, but no one must have been out there today. Here he was again, worrying about her, watching over her. Some guy who had previously been just a local celebrity now was concerned for her wellbeing. Still she knew better than to make something out of nothing, her father was his boss, if anything he was probably trying not get chewed out for not calling out the problem.
She heard when he hung up the phone, his loud steps in the quiet house somehow carried all the frustration his face wasn't showing. He sat down on the opposite side of the couch, his face turning towards her, "listen I'm going to wait here til she gets back okay?" She didn't want this to last, sure he had been nothing but kind to her, but it didn't need to keep going, "Steve i'm perfectly capable of locking the door and -" "what? stabbing someone with a kitchen knife? Nope. Your father would kill me if I left you alone. He thought someone was watching the place." It was always odd talking about the life they lived, she didn't say anything afterwards.
There was silence for a while, occasionally the two would look at each other, but curiosity got the cat. Steve bit the bullet and broke the silence, "what did you mean I don't wanna be seen like this?" The question lingering in the air for a moment. She didn't wanna think about it again, but here it was. Avoiding his gaze completely she looked at her nails and hands, "he embarassed me in front of the whole student body practically. In front of the football team and my friends; he told them all how he cheated on me because I didn't wanna do him." The anger Steve had hoped died out when he beat the everloving shit of the guy had come back, "Mia you did nothing wrong. Hell you fuckin got him on the varsity team. With all due respect that fucker should have been singing your praises." She couldnt help but to smile a bit, "you sound like Jenny and Suzie."
He shrugged, "well they're right too. From the moment I met that kid I regretted trying to help him out." She thought back to her birthday, then she thought some more, "he said he was going to break up with me on my birthday. D-did you know anything about that?" Suddenly it was quiet again, he was thinking if it was worth it in this moment to say yes but his silence spoke for him, "you fuckin knew?!" Her hands go to swat at him, but he easily takes both her small arms in his bigger hands, "hey! I told him he was a fuckin idiot if he tried that shit. Imagine what your dad would have done to him then and there. I knew you deserved better. I even told you when we talked that night." Her eyes were glossy now, she said it without thinking, just feelings spiraling and swirling in her head, "you should have just ran me over that night."
Before she could even react to what was happening, his hand roughly cupped her jaw. Her eyes meeting his serious yet hurt expression, "don't you ever. Ever. Fuckin say that shit again. Do you hear me little girl?" She'd never been in this position before, it wasn't fear of him, it was fear of what would come from this. Still he didn't move, his hand still holding her gaze to his, "did I make myself clear?" His voice deep and unwavering, she nodded, "words bambi." Not trusting her voice but not wanting to be like this she answered as best she could, "I won't say that again."
The moment he let go of her she started crying, but yet she found herself once again holding onto him for comfort. Mia knew it was wrong, but she kept telling herself he would only be a friend and nothing more. Never anything but a friend. When her mom got home he helped her bring the groceries in, thanking her for cleaning his blazer and apologized that no one had been there to keep watch of Mia.
She had already gone back up to her room locking herself away again. Only now she stared at his phone number that he written down for her on one of her notebooks with the promise that he would drop her off at school the next morning to put anyone he needed to in their place. The rest of the night she would fixate on his writing, on how he held her, how she now had his number, but still she should know better. He was a friend and nothing more, it was her mantra as she planned her outfit for school the next day. Nothing but friends, yet she wanted to wear her best perfume, here it was the one thing she had swore she would never want or do.
