The Tomorrow War Review Round-Up

The Tomorrow War Review Round-Up
Here is our The Tomorrow War Review Round-Up selection. Your not going to watch this if your don’t like Sci-Fi time travel action. You can clearly see this from our review selection. 1.5 to 4 stars out of 5! If you were ok with F9 then this is a worthwhile watch.
If available on the Amazon Prime Video streaming service, as part of your subscription, from today – July 2, 2021… everywhere!

New York Times‘ The Tomorrow War Review
By Jeannette Catsoulis
It is never good news when a phalanx of armed, balaclava-wearing dudes falls from the sky in the middle of a World Cup soccer game
Sucking ideas from across the sci-fi spectrum — Alien, Edge of Tomorrow, Starship Troopers, Jumper… Zach Dean’s screenplay grows more ludicrous by the minute.
This 140-minute assault feels, with its crude dialogue, overexcited score and characters so formulaic they might as well be cereal-box figurines.

Los Angeles Times‘ The Tomorrow War Review
by Robert Daniels
It’s reminiscent of the anti-fascist Starship Troopers, the father-daughter centered Interstellar, and the punch-the-air alien conflict driving Independence Day. But the film lacks a lead as charismatic as Matthew McConaughey or Will Smith to carry the day
Ever since A Quiet Place graced the screen, sonically monsters have begun to sound the same
This post-apocalyptic combat flick lacks the intensity to reach the 1.21 gigawatts worth of power needed to emblazon our screens in escapist flair

The Tomorrow War – Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) ©2021 Paramount Pictures, photo by Frank Masi
The Guardian‘s The Tomorrow War Review
by Peter Bradshaw
In Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, Pratt had at least some residue of his former comedy existence, and to be fair there are one or two funny lines here… but this is a very earnest and generic lead performance
There is the charismatic female commanding officer, played by Yvonne Strahovski (from The Handmaid’s Tale)
It all feels like a heavy meal, and the action scenes and the creature effects are very derivative

Hollywood Reporter‘s The Tomorrow War Review
by John Defore
Viewers will have their own ideas and questions about how a time machine might be used in an apocalypse such as this. [Scriptwriter Zach] Dean answers just enough of them — in no-nonsense “this is how it is” fashion — that we can enjoy the version of wormhole warfare he’s chosen to deliver
Creature designer Ken Barthelmey earned his pay, making beasts worth running from
The thrill ride reaches what seems a natural end point… But Dean keeps things going, adding a long and daring mission that… is only the tiniest bit plausible

The Tomorrow War – Behind the Scenes: Chris Pratt and Director Chris McKay on set ©2021 Paramount Pictures, photo by Frank Masi
Entertainment Weekly‘s The Tomorrow War Review
by Leah Greenblatt
Chris Pratt fights for the future in enjoyably absurd action flick
Director Chris McKay (Robot Chicken, The Lego Batman Movie) has anchored his career in absurdist comedy, and the movie is best when it lets its weirdo flag fly
Eventually the storyline dissolves into soft-focus sentiment and a final, snowy set piece whose execution is so patently ludicrous a 1970s Bond villain might file for intellectual property rights!

F9: Fast and Furious 9 Review Round-Up
New Post has been published on https://filmreviewonline.com/2021/06/25/f9-fast-and-furious-9-review-round-up/
F9: Fast and Furious 9 Review Round-Up
Here is our F9: Fast and Furious 9 Review Round-Up selection. How well did this ninth instalment go down? Justin Lin directed this one. He previously directed the first, fifth and sixth. Hopefully you like his style as he is reportedly directing the next two and wrapping up the series.
F9: Fast and Furious 9 – Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto ©2021 Universal
New York Times‘ F9: Fast and Furious 9 Review
By AO Scott
If the Fast and Furious movies are about anything — besides cars, of course — it’s family. Not biological kinship, as Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel)… never tires of reminding his crew, but the deep ride-or-die bonds of loyalty and solidarity
As was the case with the Avengers Infinity Stones and the Harry Potter horcruxes, the gadget needs to be assembled from far-flung parts… Accordingly, much of F9 is a busy chase…
F9 is only the second movie I’ve seen outside of my house since early 2020… [Here] People clapped at the end of some of the over-the-top action sequences [&] laughed at the corny jokes. There are certainly better movies in the world… but this one is not a bad reminder of what movies are for

F9: Fast and Furious 9 – Nathalie Emmanuel as Ramsey ©2021 Universal
Los Angeles Times‘ F9: Fast and Furious 9 Review
by Justin Chang
The movie’s mere arrival signals a return to normalcy — if by normalcy you mean hot cars, strained wisecracks, gravity-defying stunts, logic-defying revisionism and a well-worn clan of renegade motorheads!
Just sit back, relax and enjoy the gravelly intonations of Vin Diesel as the gang’s ringleader, Dominic Toretto
Like the most durable soaps — though with more tattoos, Coronas and broken glass — these movies inhabit a fantasy world where bitter grudges can be resolved within minutes, multiracial harmony is no big deal and the dead rarely stay dead for too long

The Guardian‘s F9: Fast and Furious 9 Review
by Peter Bradshaw
This deafening fantasia of internal and external combustion delivers outrageous action spectacle magnificently divorced from the rules of narrative or gravity
Some great comedy from Tyrese Gibson, …playing Roman, …realises that he, and everyone else in the film, has taken part in a large number of unfeasibly dangerous missions without ever getting injured, and he begins to think that they must all be … what? Superheroes? Gods? Actors in a movie?
It’s all very macho and defiant and silly. Yet FF9 is a cheerfully refreshing change from the locked down world of the slow and the placid

Hollywood Reporter‘s F9: Fast and Furious 9 Review
by John Defore
In F9’s would-be showstoppers, the thrills are mostly AWOL or the feats are simply too idiotic to embrace, even guiltily
As in Lin’s last feature, the disappointing Star Trek Beyond, the director/co-writer takes a quantity-over-quality approach, throwing more action, subplots and characters into the mix than any movie needs while still leaving one with the sense that something’s missing
Where the space travel comes in… the less said about that, the better

Entertainment Weekly‘s F9: Fast and Furious 9 Review
by Darren Franich
Inventing a new sibling out of thin air is how soap operas fill time in season 27. One amazing thing about F9 is that this Hail Mary twist kind of works
I missed Lin’s steady hand in the recent CGI-heavy installments. F9 has a lot of wrestling duels inside of moving vehicles. You can follow the tight-quarters combat even when you forget why they’re fighting
It’s not a complete fix. The title doesn’t lie. F9 isn’t bad, and it’s not good. It’s just fnine

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It - Review Round-Up

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It - Review Round-Up
Here is our The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It Review Round-Up selection. How well did this third instalment go down. With previous director James Wan taking a back seat is it a refreshing new take the series?
The original, The Conjuring, came out in 2013. The second, appropriately titled The Conjuring 2, was release in 2016. As you will note this one is a bit delayed due to some worldwide problem! (or was that just some other horror movie??)

New York Times‘ Conjuring 3 Review
By Lena Wilson
The Conjuring movies offer a fascinating peek into the American psyche. ….The franchise demands viewers invest in a worldview ruled by Christian dogma, where Godly good must battle satanic evil
The Devil Made Me Do It, helmed by the Curse of La Llorona director Michael Chaves, opens on a slickly stylized exorcism. Heavy fog introduces a series of imposing, angular shots…
[It] is an excellently spooky work of fiction. It would be even better if it privileged ghoulishness over gospel

Los Angeles Times‘ Conjuring 3 Review
by Justin Chang
All hell breaks loose early and often in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
What Chaves doesn’t demonstrate so far is anything approaching the kinetic virtuosity of Wan’s filmmaking, his ability to send the camera skittering up and down hallways and stranding us alongside the characters in a labyrinthine fun house of horrors
Here, and not for the first or last time, the power of kitsch compels you

by Benjamin Lee
With The Conjuring franchise, Warners has turned a sleeper hit into a series of seven and a half films over eight years, totalling almost $2bn at the global box office, unprecedented for the horror genre
What makes the Conjuring films feel like such a throwback is a studio sheen that’s often missing from the many cheaper supernatural horrors that now litter the big and small screen
The caveated effectiveness of The Conjuring 3 should be a reminder to studios that treating a horror film like a sumptuously crafted event is something worth indulging in more often

by Frank Scheck
The seventh film in the “Conjuring Universe,”… regrettably, it takes its cue not from the predecessors with which it shares a title but from the less sophisticated spinoffs — the three Annabelle movies and The Nun.
The movie starts seriously going over the edge when Ed and Lorraine break into a morgue at night and find themselves in reanimated company
The groaning soundscape works in tandem with Bishara’s big scary-ass score to creep under the audience’s skin. But the palpitating storytelling loses its way while trying to do the same

So well okay so there is there is a passing relationship to something that happened in the real world in the in exactly the same way as Texas Chainsaw Massacre is based on a true story that didn’t take place in Texas didn’t involve a chainsaw and wasn’t a massacre!
I actually think that this is the Conjuring movie that I have enjoyed the most, even though it is completely silly and preposterous

Cruella Review Round-Up - Not a bad movie

Cruella Review Round-Up - Not a bad movie
Here is our selection of the Cruella reviews. In the film Emma Stone plays One Hundred and One Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil in this origin story directed by Craig Gillespie and co-starring Emma Thompson.
The film got worldwide release from May 28, 2021. It’s also streaming on Disney+.
Cruella – Emma Stone as Cruella © 2021 Disney Enterprises Inc, photo by Laurie Sparham
New York Times’ Cruella Review
By AO Scott
Cruella is a vaguely retro costume party with a doggedly retro playlist — a treat for fashion-curious kids whipped up by the boomers and Gen Xers who hold the keys to the Disney IP storage locker.
Estella’s nemesis and role model is a famous designer known as the Baroness, a self-described genius who recalls Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread and, of course, Cruella DeVil in both her cartoon and Glenn Close incarnations.
The film itself traffics in less intense emotions, which makes it easy enough to watch but hard to care much about.

Los Angeles Times’ Cruella Review
By Justin Chang
It may seem counterintuitive, but the easiest way to enjoy “Cruella” — and it’s plenty enjoyable, even when it overstays its welcome — is to try and forget that it has much of anything to do with One Hundred and One Dalmatians.
Like so many other storybook villains subjected to elaborate image makeovers, from Wicked to Maleficent, Cruella — played here by a wholly committed, glammed-to-the-nines Emma Stone — isn’t much of a monster.
Cruella isn’t a bad movie, even if its heroine is nowhere near bad enough.

The Guardian’s Cruella Review
By Peter Bradshaw
There’s an unexpectedly huge amount of old-fashioned fun to be had in Disney’s spectacular new origin-myth story.
Thompson gives it everything’s she’s got – which is a considerable amount, and then some – as an imperious fashion designer called the Baroness with a prestige outlet at Liberty’s department store in London’s stately West End.
The big screen is surely the place to marvel at the film’s digital recreation of London in the mid-70s, with top-notch work from costume designer Jenny Beavan and production designer Fiona Crombie, who lay on the outrageous accoutrements with a trowel.

Hollywood Reporter’s Cruella Review
By David Rooney
To fill [Glenn Close] shoes — or should I say her furs — is a daunting undertaking. But it’s one Emma Stone tackles with admirable hustle and considerable charisma in Disney’s new Cruella.
Running roughly 2 hours and 16 minutes, Cruella pursues a long, at times slow, path to contextualizing the titular figure’s origins.
Ironically, contrary to the disposition of its titular character, Cruella requires dialing down the cynicism and buying in a little. But after such a wretchedly constrained and constricted year, who isn’t ready to revel in a little chaos?

Entertainment Weekly‘s Cruella Review
By David Rooney
They’re not bad, they were just drawn that way. Or at least that’s what the current big-screen mini-boom in villain origin stories from Joker to Venom and Birds of Prey‘s Harley Quinn seems to suggest — a trend so far-reaching now, it’s even touched Disney.
The costumes, by Jenny Beavan, blossom into full fantasy as the story moves into the ’70s: a Vivienne Westwood fever dream of punk-rock couture, swathed in yards of trash-bag latex and chiffon.
Those endless pieces of flair can also feel like a noisy substitute for a story line that never quite materializes, subsumed instead by showpiece moments that seem to lurch from scene to scene.

A Quiet Place Part II Review Round-Up

A Quiet Place Part II Review Round-Up
Here is our selection of the A Quiet Place Part II reviews. In the film Cillian Murphy joins Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. It is John Krasinski’s sequel to his surprise smash sci-fi horror thriller about a family living in silent terror following an alien invasion.
The film got wide release from May 28, 2021. After 45 days it then comes to streaming on Paramount+ in the USA and other streaming services elsewhere.
Check out what the positive consensus below.

New York Times’ A Quiet Place Part II Review
By Jeannette Catsoulis
This sequel to John Krasinski’s alien-invasion blockbuster is brasher, louder and less focused than its predecessor.
This new installment is, like its predecessor, wonderfully acted and intuitively directed (by John Krasinski). [However] it has also largely replaced the hushed horror of the original with full-on action.
Though in many respects an exemplary piece of filmmaking, “Part II” remains hobbled by a script that resolves two separate crises while leaving the movie itself in limbo. At least until Part III.

Los Angeles Times’ A Quiet Place Part II Review
By Justin Chang
For anyone anxiously returning to the multiplex after a long absence, there are certainly less nerve-rattling cinematic options, though also less enjoyable ones.
The first film told us nothing about the aliens’ origins and, apart from its shivery prologue, A Quiet Place Part II tells us little more. What it gives us instead is a highly watchable, dramatically wobbly gloss on War of the Worlds.
Chalk it up to the growing pains of an accidental franchise: Part II feels caught between two conflicting modes, a tightly focused family drama and a more expansive vision of post-apocalyptic decay.

The Guardian’s A Quiet Place Part II Review
By Peter Bradshaw
This sequel from writer-director John Krasinski may not quite have all its focus and intimate horror while the borrowings from Alien, Jurassic Park and Jaws are admittedly more obvious this time around.
It’s a tiny shame that the film doesn’t give more screen time to the excellent Blunt. I did wonder if Krasinski considered dreaming up some Battleship Potemkin-style scares for that vulnerable little baby; maybe he thought that was too obvious.
In the end, it’s impossible not to see these gross creatures as Covid metaphors and impossible not to delight in their comeuppance. What a pleasure to see a big, brash picture like this on the big screen.

Hollywood Reporter’s A Quiet Place Part II Review
By David Rooney
The silence of a darkened theater invariably is the best place to experience a horror movie. That was doubly true of John Krasinski’s runaway 2018 hit A Quiet Place.
The reprieves of a family meal, a game of Monopoly or a romantic late-night dance are gone in A Quiet Place Part II, leaving more space for the lacerating sorrows of the first film to echo.
Krasinski maximizes suspense by splitting the characters into three small groups, with editor Michael P Shawver cutting among them to pulse-quickening effect as each gets caught in a life-threatening situation.

Entertainment Weekly‘s A Quiet Place Part II Review
By David Rooney
Unlike some who shrugged and pivoted to streaming or on demand, the studio ultimately chose to hold out for a post-pandemic return.
And it’s almost immediately immersive to be here again. This Norman Rockwell painting that is also a cleverly torqued daylight nightmare, designed as a puzzle only its smart, resourceful characters can solve. Even if it ultimately feels like three quarters of a very good movie chopped off from a whole.
Maybe that’s why it all ends so abruptly, after a meticulous walk-up: When you’ve put in the work for this kind of world-building, it’s not a one-and-done sequel; it’s a franchise.

When will A Quiet Place Part III be released?
There is already a third film in the works which will be written and directed by Jeff Nichols. When it was announced, towards the end of 2020, they were planning for a 2022 release. Not bad going for considering the relatively low $17 Million budget of the original!
