“I have to admit, I’m a little surprised at your age you’re comfortable still living in a place like this, but I suppose you never needed much.”
“No… I– yeah.”
He never needed much. He forces a weak smile. He feels vaguely sick.

…Really, I should have guessed it would be too much for you.” He brings an exasperated hand to his brow and Matsuda can fill in the rest– Shouldn’t have expected much.

Across the table, Light studies him with an expression he can’t quite place. Hand positioned elegantly against his mouth, perhaps thoughtfully– God, he really is so beautiful. Matsuda can feel his gaze on him.
What- what is it?
He avoids Light’s eyeline, tentatively reaching for his glass and taking a swig of what's left of his drink, ice clinking and rattling.
Why is no one talking?
Light finally shifts, softly breathing out. A hint of delight on his face, like he might just laugh.
“I see,” he hums sweetly.
Matsuda can only gawk, lovestruck– he hasn’t seen Light show a face like that in so long…
“Matsuda-san, you’re just as you appear, aren’t you?”

Light stares at him, completely unreadable, hand running down the side of his drink. His eyes remain locked on his while taking a small sip– holding him there, like it’d be some horrible mistake to dare look away. There’s something cold and sharp veiled just under the surface and Matsuda can only see a shadow of it, but it makes his skin crawl–
“Matsuda.” He’s smiling, then, like his previous expression was merely Matsuda’s eyes playing tricks on him.

Light gave him a withering glare. Ryuk had seen him die, and he was still capable of making him fear for his life.

Down in the basement where all truths go to hide, a suspect will die of a heart attack. A little amusement, a private joke known only to two. Ryuk laughs enough for both of them

He feels not just his mortality, which he had felt since he was twenty-three and bleeding out of a hole in his side, but his age; when he visits the children of Wammy's House, with their sharp, mischievous eyes; some studious, some playful, some lost in their own rules and their own world, he sees L everywhere and nowhere. It is like calling on ghosts

His eyes linger on the nametag. There was a time when these words would have given him the power to end life, and he has never gotten out of the habit of looking for them. He is not sure he will ever sleep again without seeing lists of names, without the feeling of a phantom pen in his hand.

Chuuya knew about Ango and Oda, but he didn’t know that Oda’s dying wish had been the only push Dazai needed to leave his entire life with the Port Mafia without even a backwards glance.
He didn’t know that it had been such an easy choice for Dazai.
He didn’t know that he had mattered so little.

Ryuk said he wasn't Kira's side, and if he wasn't on Kira's he certainly couldn't be on L's, but [...] – it didn't matter that Ryuk wasn't on his side. If it were necessary, Light would find a way to make him tip the balance to Kira.

He remembered Rem, puzzled and incredulous, hating Light and demanding to know what he saw in the boy, why he didn't kill him, the arrogant human, treating him like a particularly dim pet. It made Ryuk laugh.

Phlegethon River by Nilahxapiel
“I want you. But I want justice more.”
Iridescence by raisuki (inthegripofahurricane)
It's a strange thing--to wake up in a place you don't recognise in a city you've never seen; but that's the least of Light Yagami's problems, especially when compared to the prospect of serving the time--and potentially being executed--for a crime he doesn't remember committing. And then there's L.
Unspoken Rules  by Ihasabukkit
When Light's checkmate on L is reversed he kidnaps L in a violent act of desperation. Now the investigators are on his tail and Light has to push his ideals to greater extremes to survive, but will he go as far as torturing and murdering with his own hands?
Genius is a curse by Bloodshot Eyes
If Light had never touched the Death Note, would he ever have found an escape from the depression and boredom that plagued him? Would he have had a future at all? M for dark themes.
Redivivus by Silver Pard
The most important thing Ryuk learned watching Light Yagami was how to follow the rules to the letter and still break them.
Alternative by Silver Pard
Living with failure was never part of the plan.
Love Is Blind by TzviaAriella
The night before her wedding, Sayu Yagami visits Tokyo Detention House to dance with her brother.
From the Same Star by Nilahxapiel
The first time Ryuk drops the Death Note, it is an accident that it lands in the hands of someone as perfect for it as Light Yagami is. The second time, he chooses Light, and laughs that much harder.(Canon Compliant, for the Manga/Anime and Drama)
Tasteless Apples by Fanfiction_Lurker_1
Post-Canon. After Light's death, Ryuk tries to find a human as entertaining as him. It doesn't go as well as he had hoped. Or: Ryuk appreciates what he had only after losing it.

“L solved cases to alleviate his boredom, because Watari forbid L’s genius mind should have gone to waste. He is tired of it. It’s become a job as monotonous and routine as any nine-to-five; the reason he began is no longer there and he suspects it never will again.”
