🌿🌿Hedge Witch Guide🌿🌿
What is a Hedge Witch?
While the term ‘Hedge Witch’ means different things to different witches, there are some key traits defining it. Hedge witches almost always practice solitary magic, and don’t often join covens or work with other witches, though this isn’t necessarily a requirement. It involves a deep study of the natural world and spirits. They make their hearth and home the center of their magical activity, and study and work with local flora and wildlife. A Hedge Witch’s most sacred space is typically their home. They practice most of their magic in their daily routine. Hedge Witches are also known to be healers, which feeds into their study of local plants and herbalism. They might also work with a plethora of spirits and deities. But truthfully, a Hedge Witch’s path is as eclectic and unique as the Witch themself!
Tumblr media
Why the word “Hedge”?
It could have a few meanings. One interpretation is that, in older times, wise women typically lived outside the edges of the village or town or “just beyond the hedge”, hence the name. But a more popular and widely-known answer is that the “Hedge” refers to the boundary between the living and the dead, or the physical and the spiritual. Hedge Witches serve as emissaries between these worlds, helping both spirits and humans alike. In other words, they “walk” the hedge between two worlds! It can also refer to their practice of studying local plants and wildlife. Hedge Witch practices are similar to Green Witches, Death Witches, Dream Witches and Kitchen/Hearth Witches.
Basic Hedge Witch Practices
Hedge Witchery is all about magic in mundane living, especially in the modern day. Focus on the sacredness of your own actions and incorporate personal magical practices into your everyday life. Here’s some simple ideas from my own practice:
Leave a small jar or dish of honey out for passing spirits, especially those who help you
Study healing magic and practice it when you or a loved one are sick
Keep the house clean and tidy, and focus on the sacredness of your actions while doing so
Name and Talk to your House. Mine’s name is Elizabeth. Greet your house when you walk inside and say Goodbye to it as you leave
Meditate!
Always ask for permission before picking a flower, leaf or plant
Thank your spirit guides, house spirits and local spirits for their help whenever you can or feel like it, especially when you know they've helped you!
Another important part of Hedge Witchery is getting to know the spirits around you, both your spirit guides and local land and house spirits. Work with them, but also make sure to use adequate protection. Spirits are, in many ways, like people - not all will want to hurt you, but you should still be careful until you know them better. Still, you can invite them into your life with songs, poems, offerings and simple invitations. The more kind you are to the good spirits, the more likely they are to offer you protection and help. This might involve:
Studying local plants and sacred areas
Taking care of a garden or houseplants
Doing divination to communicate with them
Taking care of the natural environment around you like protecting the local wildlife and plants
Spend a lot of time out in nature and you’re bound to meet a few helpful spirits!
Tumblr media
How do I know if Hedge Witchery is for me?
If you are drawn to working with the natural world, spirits and practicing healing magic, Hedge Witchcraft might be just what you’re looking for! If you’re interested in researching local folklore and flora, prefer to work your magic alone, have a strong connection to plants and the environment, see your house as a sacred space, and want to work with spirits, perhaps consider looking further into becoming a Hedge Witch!
But the most important element is to develop your own practice - no two Hedge Witches, or Witches in general for that matter, will be alike. Find out what works best for you and do that. If that happens to fit a specific path, good for you! If not, don’t worry about it.

Sigils to help you get in tune with the elements and a magic circle to allow you to harness all of them. If you use this to cast a circle, make sure the top of the circle is pointing North.

god my favorite part of knitting/crocheting/etc is watching string become fabric. crumpling it in my hands. this fabric would’ve never existed had I not willed it into being. it isn’t fabric, it’s time made physical. made material. isn’t that the high of crafting? you mold time between your hands and put it into other people’s hands. my least favorite part is when my cat tries to cram the whole yarn ball into his mouth

A Healthy Reminder: You are not required to prove to anyone that magic exists. If your personal practice is not harming anyone and brings you joy, it's no one's business. Do not waste time arguing with people.

Friendly reminder that if you cannot explain, discuss, or celebrate your beliefs without shitting on someone else's, you neither understand nor truly believe in your chosen path.
Yes, even if you have trauma.
And no, you don't get to claim the suffering of people who died during witch trials because those were not secret pagan witches.
Also, learn your history. Not everything was originally a pagan sex festival, the Wheel of the Year is a recent invention, Christians did not steal our holidays, and cultural development doesn't happen in a vacuum.
Don't be a pick-me witch. You're better than that. So do better.

Witchcraft Exercises - Witchy Inspo Journal
Not sure what to do with all those notebooks you’ve collected for future use in your craft? (Don’t lie, we all have a stack somewhere.) Turn them into inspo journals!
Create and maintain a journal where each page is a quote or song lyric or picture that inspires you in your craft or defines some element of your practice. Use scrapbooking materials, washi tape, stickers, stamps, and any art supplies you wish. If you’re skilled at drawing or painting, you can do that too.
The journal can be a simple notebook or a three-ring binder or a nice scrapbook from the craft store, whatever works for you. Try to do a page a week if you can, and collect ideas for future pages when you can’t. Update as often as you feel inspired to do so and enjoy some witchy art therapy.
This can also be turned into a devotional activity, with your inspo journal dedicated to your chosen deity(ies) or pantheon. A devotional inspo journal can also make a great private altar if you don’t have the space for one in your home or if you’re a stealth witch who can’t practice or venerate openly.
Here are some examples from my own inspo journal:

Witchcraft Exercise - Quantifying Your Craft
Witchcraft is a complicated business. There are lots of moving parts, dozens of things to study, and so much information to try and keep straight in your head. It’s easy to become overwhelmed. Sometimes we forget things. Not just when the full moon is (although plenty of us do) but what it is we want to do with our craft.
And sometimes we feel like we’ve lost our drive. Like whatever moved us to become witches in the first place has somehow slipped away, leaving us with just the dregs. Sometimes we feel stuck, unable to make progress. It’s easy to become frustrated too, but it’s important to push on.
To that end, I offer this exercise.
Choose a journal or open a word document and begin quantifying your craft.
Start by outlining the broad concepts. Do you follow a particular path or tradition? How would you classify your craft, i.e. green witchcraft, cottagecraft, sea witch, lunar witch, and so on? Do you work with any deities, and if so, which ones? Do you work alone or with others? How long have you been practicing? What, to you, is the most important aspect of your craft?
Then get into your working space. Do you have an altar? If so, what’s on it and why? Do you have a dedicated workspace, or a place you go to work magic outside of your home? If you could describe your ideal workspace, what would it look like?
Next, describe your tools. Do you have cards or runes or a wand or other specialized tools that you work with? What do you use most frequently? Do you have favorites? Do you make or grow any of your components? Where do you acquire the things you use in your magic, if you can’t make them at home? Do you have a personal library? What are your favorite sources of information? Do you have ritual garb or jewelry that connects you with your craft?
Sketch out your year as a witch. What holidays do you observe and how do you celebrate them? What seasonal festivals or special occasions do you mark? Which ones do you enjoy the most? Is there a time of year when you feel more energized?
Once you have all of this recorded, think back to what first interested you in magic and witchcraft and describe that. Was it a movie? A favorite book? A personal experience? Were you raised in the craft or did you come to it on your own? What made you decide to become a witch?
Then think about how you’ve progressed since you started. Have you achieved a particular goal you set when you began, or are you closer to achieving it then you were? What have you gotten really good at? Where are you still struggling? Where would you like to be a year from now? Are there things you’d like to try but haven’t yet?
And of course, if anything else occurs to you, record that too.
There is no need to share these thoughts with anyone if you don’t want to. This is purely a personal exercise, to help you understand where you are, where you’ve come from, and where you want to go. Quantifying this information might provide some much-needed inspiration, in addition to helping you solidify any nebulous thoughts that might be floating around. It’s much easier to progress in your craft if you have an outline for what you’re already doing.
Happy Witching!

⛤Kitchen Witchcraft-Plants and Dolls⛤
Plants played an important role in many traditions and were used for rituals of luck, protection and achieving certain goals.
Ancient sorcerers and alchemists believed that if the laws of nature were respected and followed, plants would reveal all their medicinal properties to them in order to heal the body's diseases.
Marigold has long been known as a flower of protection and a flower that knows how to keep secrets. It is believed that it will neutralize unwanted influences if it is placed in a window.
Hawthorn is known for its ability to ward off evil forces and enhance material progress. But there is also a belief that says that a hawthorn tree must not be destroyed, because otherwise a curse will fall on that person's family.
Witch hazel is one of the most used in love magic. A person who cannot find a partner should carry with him one head of witch hazel. If there is a doubt that there are negative influences in the house, this grass should be sprinkled in all corners of the rooms.
Verbena is known for its ability to protect women's beauty. It is used in rituals when love is unrequited and for success in court cases.
Nettle neutralizes negative influences. It is used in rituals to encourage courage, protect the home and purify it.
Lavender belongs to one of the most popular plants for defense against evil. It is used in magical beauty baths and love spells.
Sage has many medicinal properties. It is believed that being placed under the pillow brings prophetic dreams.
Wormwood is a very powerful plant that is used a lot in magical rituals. There is a belief that a person will be protected on a trip if he carries dry wormwood leaves with them.
⛤Simple Doll Magic
There are many techniques with which we can strengthen our energy or contribute to the realization of certain intentions.
For this purpose, certain plants are placed in a cloth doll, which is most often made with the aim of healing, but also to attract love or financial progress.
These dolls were used several thousand years ago, they were made of various medicinal plants and cloth.
They symbolically represent a person through whose help improvement occurs.
Making this doll is very simple.
The outline of a human figure should be drawn on the material of the appropriate color, then cut, hemmed and filled with plants that have a suitable purpose.
For example, rosemary is used for better concentration, thyme is used to boost mood, and fresh nettle leaves are used to recover from illness.

Types of Spells
This post will go over some physical spell types and their structure. These are simply vehicles in which to move your intent and energy from inside you to the universe. This post will not teach you how to actually create or cast a spell. There is more to a spell than the physical aspect.
Tumblr media
This is by no means a complete or authoritative list of spell types and it's a very generic list! This is just a page from my grimoire, take what you please and leave what you will.
Verbal Spells
Arguably the most basic and simplistic of spells, but powerful nonetheless. You speak or chant your intent into existence. The words you use have power, so it would be wise to do some research on words when doing a verbal spell.
Candle Spells
At their most basic level, these are simply spells involving candles as the main form of sending your intent into the universe (or to a being). You can choose to carve words, symbols, or sigils into the candle; you may also want to anoint it with oils, herbs, or small objects.
Please practice fire safety when doing candle spells!
Sealed Spells
This includes jars, bottles, and other various containers. You could even use an envelope if you’d like. You basically put your spell components into the container and seal it in some way. One popular way of sealing is using wax from candles or even crayons, though you could use stickers, string, or tape if you prefer.
Knot Spells
Tying knots while saying aloud or in your head. You can choose the material, amount of knots and other objects to best support your spell.
The Witches’ ladder can be considered a knot spell. You could consider crochet and knitting types of knot spells as well.
Weaving Spells
This could involve any type of weaving, such as on a loom, sewing, or embroidery. You can use the weaving as a form of meditation or you can use your creation as the object that anchors your spell.
Petition Spells
Either by fire, earth, water, or air. Can also be called written spells.
Write out your desire and burn it, bury it, or toss it into a body of moving water. For air, whisper your desire into the wind you may also use a combination of the elements such as burning the paper and throwing the ashes into the wind.
Be careful to take care of yourself and the environment when doing petition spells. Personally, I think using the paper as compost could be quite useful for certain spells!
Sigil Spells
Draw, carve, or otherwise inscribe your symbol or sigil spell onto an object. This could be used in conjunction with other spell types like petition spells and candle spells.
I understand that there are those who believe that sigils are a tool for a spell and cannot be considered a spell in and of themselves. Personally, I disagree with this as I believe that all that’s really needed with a spell is a person to do the spell and the energy to do it.
The type of spell is not nearly as important as the intent of the spell and the energy put into the spell. The physical aspect of a spell can often help you channel and direct your energy better, so look to this list (or others) to see what kind of spell structure would work best for you!
Feel free to comment or reblog if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions on this list!

Local Witchcraft
Every witch has a deep well of local energy to draw from in their craft. So much can be learned from what’s around you; you just need to tap into it.
Tumblr media
Learn about endangered species. Take steps to protect them.
Learn about invasive species. Learn their properties, pull them up, and use them in witchcraft.
Study the plants around you.
Learn their medicinal properties.
Learn their magical properties.
Learn their scientific names.
Learn which ones are edible and which ones are poisonous.
Learn about local animals– which ones are endangered, myths surrounding them, etc.
Research the meanings behind names of towns, streets, parks, buildings, etc. There may be interesting bits of history or folklore.
Identify major natural forces in your area (eg: storms, the ocean, wildfires)
How do they affect you?
How can you get in touch with them?
How can you harness their power in your magic?
Research local folklore.
Get involved with conservation programs or environmentalist groups in your area.
Observe how the land around you changes with the seasons. What can you see at certain times that you can’t at others? What flowers bloom, what bugs are active?
Go out in nature! Familiarize yourself with the wonderful energies that surround you.

Happy winter solstice everyone!
❄️ on this day the the sun shines for a brief time marks some family traditions along with material collection opportunities !
❄️ I burn a log fire with a few herbs + other plants (smokes like crazy but oh well) ash for prosperity (just a few sticks, no need to hack down a whole tree), balsam fir needles (these guys are all over where I live but they’re a cold climate tree so if you can’t find one don’t worry about it) to bring change and ward off evil, and rosemary for remembrance. You can also write a new year’s wish on a bay leaf and burn it to come true
❄️ I also like to make my version of cider for yule, lmk if you want the recipe
❄️ collecting moon water during the solstice is more potent, I usually will go out and collect snow but guys its -40 F rn and frostbite is not on my to do list
❄️I leave an offering for the goddess Rhiannon as the moon is one of her symbols. I leave out half an apple and seed for her birds
❄️during the solstice spirits and fae are out. Though unseen their affects are felt
- sudden drop spike in temperature
- snow storm
- low hanging clouds after sundown
- spooked livestock
I would suggest staying inside and out of their way as not all spirits are benevolent. An offering also never hurts, I leave a dish of milk by the window with bread + honey.
Anywho..
❄️ also helps to wear red or place mountain ash berries or oatmeal in your pockets to ward off any creatures of ill intent
✨Happy Yule! Stay warm and enjoy the holiday with friends and family :D✨
