Some of my "Grown Up" Encanto Headcanons
I told you guys I would get you more headcanons so here we go, all the grown-ups!
General
There is very little definition in Cool Kids versus Warm Kids, just Weather Mom vs Cooking Mom. All these adults will comfort any child in the way they can.
They don't have Favorites, just ones that they end up comforting/relating to the easiest.
All the 50 yr olds are super close. Like, they would hang out on the weekends just because close.
Abuela
She thinks of all these adults as her kids. Her sons-in-law were just later additions.
Has never gotten over the Single Mom of Three mentality of "if I hear a thump it's fine, if I hear a thump and crash it's less fine, if I hear a thump and screaming it's Not Fine, if I hear a thump and silence something is Very Wrong".
Absolutely peeks into people's rooms sometimes to be sure they're okay. Especially Bruno now that he's back.
Was an absolute worrywort whenever someone got sick pre-Julieta. Like, very comforting and doting.
IS the entire criminal justice system of the Encanto.
Follows the old school "don't get caught" way of getting back at someone that has wronged someone else. Says "be the bigger person" and hands Camilo a bat at the same time.
Julieta
Cooks everything with Loooveeeeee~.
The parent that rolls with everything. Oh? Camilo is "Juan" today? Well tell "Juan" he better come have dinner. Oh? Dolores is nowhere to be found? Well let's hope these COOKIES DON'T SUDDENLY GO MISSING FROM THE COUNTER.
Was the tiebreaker triplet. Not meaning she was the peacekeeper, because they all took turns with that, but she would cast the deciding vote.
Has a very corny sense of humor. Like, Pepa and Bruno learned how to roll their eyes specifically because Julieta isn't funny but she's so earnest you have to laugh.
Graceful to a fault. Could balance twelve plates on her person and walk a tightrope just fine. She just married clumsy.
Her confidence is purely from age. She was not confident as a kid.
Pepa
Was very sad to not get to share the nursery anymore. What do you mean she spends her entire life with those two and now they live in different rooms? No.
Random pile of blankets spotted around the house? A Pepa nest, do not disturb for she may be in it.
The fastest to anger triplet. Anytime she saw someone in town even remotely being mean to another Madrigal she nipped it in the bud with a glance. Not even because of the weather, just because she's spicy.
The worst at offering comforting words so the best to go to if you just want to be held and rocked, you're never too old in Pepa's eyes.
Has anxiety but is actually really rational. But when your every emotion is on display it doesn't matter how rational you are, people call you emotional.
Feels bad every time a regular storm passes through the Encanto because she can't really stop it.
Bruno
The funny triplet. His jokes are hit or miss but his method of comfort is 'lightening the mood'.
Was terrified he'd break and drop Isabela but by the time Camilo rolls around he was an absolute pro. Very sad he never got to hold Antonio.
Would do plays and performances for the sobrinos. And let them participate if they wanted to. (Was the best story reader for a similar reason.)
Has a backup ruana because the sobrinos would steal it with the hood up and say "No, I'm Bruno," then give each other futures. (Like, 'you'll have a papaya with breakfast' or 'you're going to give me all your cookies'.)
Mirabel is his favorite, but he loves all of them. Has a special connection to the Big Kids because he helped raise them, but wants to connect to the Little Kids since he feels like he missed a lot.
Don't want to talk about why you're sad? Go sit with Bruno and hear childhood triplet stories or him read a book in a silly voice.
AgustĂn
People thought he was getting hurt on purpose to hang out with Julieta every day for months before he figured out he liked her. He's just clumsy.
Julieta thinks his glasses are cute and he always wonders if maybe that's why he still needs them. (Not in a resentful way, just a cutesy way.)
Cooks for Julieta whenever he can. Is actually a really good cook and less accident-prone in Casita's kitchen.
Camilo tried to eat his glasses multiple times as a baby. AgustĂn doesn't bring it up but still has a soft spot for him because of it.
Taught all the kids piano but Luisa took to it the best. He misses having her sit on his lap and pretend to play.
Asks Isabela for a new shirt flower every day, because it started mostly cute and at this point if he didn't ask she would think he's dying.
FĂ©lix
Kid: Saw this redheaded girl sobbing in a field, asked why she was sitting in the rain and didn't understand why she looked so mad at him. Teen: Oh! That's why she was so mad. Adult: If I don't marry this woman my life has been for nothing.
Absolutely charmed Abuela and Julieta while he was starting to date Pepa because he knew he couldn't without their permission. Also tried to be nice to Bruno but was pretty sure Bruno hated him (spoiler: Bruno did not.)
Chastises the kids the most because they know Pepa has a bleeding heart and unless it's Really Serious they can get away with it.
Used to dance with all the nietas, letting them step on his feet and never letting them know it hurt.
He and AgustĂn made a good team because together they had music and dance. They're also bros.
ABSOLUTELY tells every story like it was amazing and Pepa is pointing out what went wrong but FĂ©lix is just beaming like "okay so?"
Next up will probably be the Warm Siblings, then finally the Cool Sisters! đŸ€”I haven't really decided yet!

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE that Bruno has a soft spot for Mirabel. Want Bruno to do something? Get Mirabel to ask him. YES.
BUT ALSO, he had twelve years with Isabela and Dolores (or eleven depending on if you think they're 21 or 22). And nine with Luisa. He spent the same amount of time with Camilo and Mirabel pre-movie. And Dolores heard him every day (also her room is literally next to the painting for how to get into the walls.)
Like, do I think Mirabel has Bruno wrapped around her little finger and could get him to do anything? Yes, wholeheartedly.
Do I also think that he's a little weak for his sobrinos in general? Yes absolutely.
Do I think exploring Dolores and Bruno's relationship is worth it? YES.

I LOVE things like art books and extended cuts and behind the scenes because I LOVE to see the author/creator's original vision/things they had to change. Like, the LONG version.
It isn't always the best version/way to tell the story but I just like to see what was on the floor. What we missed.
Just, UGH, it's like how fanfiction fills gaps but canon (or closer to canon.)

I know I said I didn't think Mirabel didn't get a gift simply because she was the only kid with no one after her....
(And I don't want to join the Real Argument about why she doesn't have a gift.)
What if Mirabel didn't get a gift because Pepa wasn't planning/intending to have more kids but the Madrigals have to Rule of Three this ish so no gift for Mirabel to freak out the family into having another one?
Like, Magical Realism says we don't look too hard at the rules but also, consider.

Okay. Something for people to understand about my blog. I don't want to change anyone's mind or really debate things? Everything here is filtered through my experiences/perspective and then filtered again through putting that stuff into words?
All of this is headcanon. I don't even really dabble in theories most of the time? I just say stuff that the movie/media makes me think could happen. You can disagree, vehemently. But, like, cool? We're different people? We perceive things differently.
And I spend a lot of my time writing really intense stuff so most of the non-fic stuff I post here is just half formed thoughts I need out of my head. And I post them in case they resonate or someone with more braincells wants to say it better.
So, just putting that out there. This isn't a polished tumblr, it's just me rambling into the interwebs to get a break from polished stuff.

This factors into a larger theory/headcanon I have but for now:
Other people cook the family meals because Julieta needs to cook for town.

Guyssss, Abuela's treatment of Mirabel had nothing to do with Mirabel as a personnnnn!!
Mirabel represented a falter in the miracle, a shifting of the status quo. That didn't scare Abuela because "oh no different". It scared Abuela because if the miracle falters her family is vulnerable again. If the miracle falters her family can be hunted down and murdered in front of her.
This isn't "Mirabel is weird and I don't like her specifically". This is "oh no the magic. Our home. Our life. All my other family members, Mirabel's safety. Everything is going to be like that again. No. Noo!"

Julieta has an adaptable comforting style.
Like she can just look at you and know if you need her to be goofy or cuddly or just listen. She doesn't give unsolicited advice (but she will rant to Bruno later about an easier version of what you decided to do) unless she thinks it's for your safety.
Is very calm and let's you make your own mistakes UNLESS your safety is threatened. Like, oh? Dolores is only going to walk backwards? Fine, just mindful of the stairs (Casita wouldn't let her go down them). But Luisa and Camilo want to see how high she can throw him? No! LUISA! PLEASE!

I said my birthday piece but Mirabel can't have a birthday near Antonio's.
At 7:00 (19:00) on Mirabel's birthday it was already dark. The same time Antonio's looked like the afternoon then sunset.
This doesn't really matter and for some fics I'll be ignoring this, but here ya go.

Okay so "open your eyes" are arc words, the movie is all about perspectives, Mirabel wears green glasses. This will go in an in-depth post later.
But, like, even putting all that aside, Disney protagonist with Glasses and she's adorable and I love her. Mirabel has glasses guys! This is a win for all the glasses girlies out there.

dont forget when luisa is crying after the dinner and augustin goes after her to comfort her :(
This was technically in response to me calling Luisa a Daddy's Girl. But since a few people pointed out that scene, I totally took it as a prompt.
So, here's what happened after Luisa ran off after dinner and AgustĂn followed her. NOT romantic, familial. I tried to context clues all the Spanish so you don't need it to get it if that makes sense.
Luisa was maybe, only maybe, a bit of a Papí’s girl. She loved her entire family, that was one of her main characteristics, but her papá had a special place in her heart. One of her first memories was sitting on his lap and banging on the piano keys while he told her it was beautiful. And him dancing with her in his arms or being carried on his shoulders.
Maybe she was a total Papí’s girl.
Strained wasn’t the right word for their current relationship because she knew she could just walk up to him and start talking and her Papá would make time for her. Except she was busy and he was probably also busy. Even if that sounded like a really weak excuse given everything she knew about her family and her papá, it was the only excuse she had so she was sticking to it!
So when her gift started flickering, fading, failing she didn’t stop to think about talking to any of her family members. She just pretended it wasn’t and worked “twice as hard” like Abuela had instructed, because Luisa was the strong one and she could do this. Then her hermanita found her, made her actually talk about her feelings for the first time in a long time, and she’d felt better but also not. Because she knew on a fundamental level that breaks were good, music had pauses for a reason but also the donkeys needed to be corralled and the river needed to be rerouted and the church needed to be moved and and and-
The donkeys were heavy.
Heavy like nothing she could imagine. Heavy like 14 years of constant improvement for nothing. Heavy like her entire sense of purpose was gone in a blink with no fanfare or extravagance just gone.
The river and tilted houses and all the bricks or such were forgotten in an instant because if donkeys were heavy there was no use trying to do anything else. She couldn’t do anything else. She wasn’t anything else. Being The Strong One was all she had. It was all she was, had ever been or would ever be. That was it. And without it?
Without it she was running to Casita sobbing and overwhelmed. Too many feelings battling for dominance and leaving Luisa the loser. She vaguely noted running past her mamá in the kitchen and Abuela y Mirabel in the hall on her way to faceplant on her bed and sob until she had to drag herself out of bed for Isabela’s dinner. Luisa knew how important it was so she could wrangle her feelings and stop crying long enough for her hermana to have what should be one of the best days of her life.
Except that Abuela Guzmán asked Luisa to bring the piano and she’d never really refused a request so she got up, crying into her hands, having to drag it all the way to the dining room and was this how “normal” people felt? Was this what Mirabel felt like? Because this was awful and horrible and she couldn’t even move a piano so she was basically worthless and the entire night was ruined and awful and she’s a total loser and going back to her room because it was finally over.
“Luisa? Can I come in?” The door creaked open, moments after she’d slammed it and flopped onto her bed. No. He could not come in. No one should come in because everything was awful and she wanted to be alone and cry and sob in peace. But her bed was dipping and a hand was rubbing her shoulder. “Ay, Luisa, háblame. Quiero ayudar.” She shook her head, trying to suffocate herself with the pillow. Helping was the problem, she couldn’t help without her gift. And if she couldn’t help she was useless. The End. That’s the full story.
But apparently her papĂĄ was in a helping mood because she could feel him shifting on the bed, getting more comfortable and kicking his feet up, his hand kept rubbing her back.
“Take all the time you need,” he said. Which really only made her cry more and that was proof he should just leave her here to cry and suffer alone.
“What if I take forever?” She muttered into the pillow, halfway sobbing and feeling nothing like the 19-year-old mujer she was supposed to be and every bit the niña her papĂ used to rock to sleep. He hummed somewhere above her.
“Then I suppose forever I shall wait,” he said. She choked on a watery laugh, shifting so one eye could peek out at him. “Not so bad, waiting forever. Just sitting here con mi hija, drying her tears porque she is not a loser.” He smirked down at her and Luisa chuckled again, shifting her pillow to his lap so she could be comfortable while she suffocated. He took that as an opportunity to rub her back and neck and they sat in silence for a while. It was
nice. Even if they could hear Tía Pepa thundering outside and Isabela was probably off somewhere wishing Mirabel was never born and Abuela was definitely very stressed out- Luisa didn’t think about any of it. Her family could handle their own burdens for a few minutes while she came to grips with the fact that her life as she knew it was over and she was as helpful as a spoon with a hole in it.
“Papí
I’m losing my gift,” she whispered. So different from shouting it at Abuela and Mirabel earlier, as she was just realizing the implications. Now, she knew it. It was coming true. Her gift was fading, she was losing her strength.
“Well gift or no gift you’re still a part of this familia and you’re still special,” he said. Which, of course he did. Luisa had heard them say it to Mirabel enough times growing up but this was different. Mirabel never had one. She and Papí couldn’t understand what it was like to lose something they’d never had. It probably sucked to not have one, but it was different! “Even without a gift, you’d be the strongest Madrigal. You’d still be my daughter. One of the best musicians in the Encanto. Blue Crayon Scribble Number 7 is still an amazing piece.” Luisa had to sit up to laugh, choking back tears and coughing while she did.
“We both know Red Crayon Scribble 5 was best,” she retorted, sniffling and rolling her eyes at Papí. He paused to think before kissing her cheek.
“You know what? I think you’re right.” She flopped her head on his shoulder, still sniffling but smiling. He continued rubbing her back till the sniffles died down and then he kissed her forehead.
“Luisa, en serio, even if you lose your gift we’ll still love you. You’ll still be you. You’ll still be my amazing daughter who helps everyone and is so hard-working.” That brought fresh tears to Luisa’s eyes. She didn’t want to lose her gift, but it was nice to know at the very least nothing would change with Papí. Even if she never really expected it to, it was nice to hear aloud.
“Gracias PapĂ,” she said, not bothering to pick her head up but wrapping him in a hug, then slowly sliding down back to her pillow in his lap. “Pero
 ¿Quédate conmigo
por favor?” She whispered into the pillow because all her feelings weren’t fighting anymore but she was tired and the idea still hurt and she didn’t want to be alone.
“Ay, I said forever, didn’t I?” he said. She smiled.
