OFFSHORE (GALLIVANT) from andrew kotting on Vimeo.
2007
Video - 16mm b/w and mini dv colour - 20 minutes
Beginning in the pitch-black early hours of a September morning, the film follows a 14hr 17min cross-channel relay swim that I made along with my brothers Mark and Joey, a friend Ian Dale, the actor and comedian Sean Lock (Smart Alek and co-writer of This Filthy Earth) and the actor Tchili (This Filthy Earth and Ivul).
The attempt was witnessed by the writer and wordsmith Iain Sinclair and is narrated by Eden Kötting. The film came about in 2006 (the 10 year anniversary since the release of the original film Gallivant) and the chance discovery of a boat called The Gallivant, which offered to shadow us across the Channel as a support vessel.
Flotsam and jetsam in the form of conversations, field recordings and the voices of Gladys and Eden from the original film invade. The film shows scenes of explicit vomiting.
Rode them all the way in to where his rib cage scraped against the tiny sharp pebbles and jagged clamshells and pulverized sea shells at the edge of the shore and he hustled to his feet and hurriedly turned and went lurching through the low surf until it was knee high and deep enough for him to plunge in and begin swimming madly out to the rising breakers – into the advancing, green Atlantic, rolling unstoppably towards him like the obstinate fact of the future.

Kaleydoskop Short Film, Audience FEEDBACK from Oct. 2021 EXPERIMENTAL Film Festival from Wildsound Festival on Vimeo.
KALEYDOSKOP, 25min., Italy, Experimental
Directed by Stefano Viali
A subjective journey, made up of images, sounds and colors. A research on the creative process, on the possibility of creating a cinematographic, non-narrative story, starting from the works that a group of artists had previously created for an art installation. The camera explores, reacts, re-elaborates what it sees through the movements of the frames and then with the editing, trying to subtract every element of reality. In this way it takes the viewers point of view and allows them to create a completely new and personal image. Fragments of emotions, sudden changes of rhythm and colors, as in a kaleidoscope in which you can see a continuous intertwining of multiple stories, which will leave a trace on the viewers. As it happens in a dream.

Cut Up & Grain, Chapter 1: Life from Cesare Saldicco on Vimeo.
L3 starts from the encounter of two active composers in the field of electro acoustic music and live electronics with a video artist who operates in the field of live video performance.
The cut-up & grain project, of which the first chapter, Life, has been recently introduced (Live Performers Meeting 2008 - Rome), conceptually devotes itself to the cut-up technique, devised and experienced by the American writer, and spiritual father of the beat generation, William S. Burroughs.
The video and sound materials which make up the “libraries” used by performing artists almost exclusively come from the web. Fifteen key words chosen by artists as significant of the established narrative path are inserted in a search engine. From the enormous amount of results video and sound clips are selected which to compare or contrast, describe such a path constituting the “palette” of the three players. During the performance the artists elaborate the materials in real time, fragmenting them, transforming them and reconstructing a new sense, a sense “other” than the original one. The performers use various techniques, among which it is worth mentioning the “grainy” sound, obtained thanks to the original patches programmed in Max/MSP environment. Improvisation plays an important role in the performance, which every time turns out to be different from each other, even though it has the same title and uses the same libreries.

Studio III Space and Colour from Antonino Chiaramonte on Vimeo.
Studio III Space and Colour is another composition belonging to my PhD portfolio. This study investigates the development of the audiovisual relationship in a compositional context where the sound and the moving image share common codes: space and colour saturation. Although electroacoustic music and visual arts have different ways to integrate these codes into their languages, space and colour saturation can be related to each other, between the two media, through specific parameters. This composition is an in-depth study of another effective way to develop an audiovisual intermedial relationship, using a non-time-based shared common code. The final mix is Binaural; therefore, you need headphones to experience the soundtrack correctly.

Bodies VS from Nicola Fumo Frattegiani on Vimeo.
Two human bodies. Two anonymous and unique entities.
This is a short narration of the struggle and conflict first, and of the discover of knowledge and reconciliation then. A paradigmatic axis of every human relation told through the exteriority of the animal behaviour. This is a story of strangeness bearer of violence and those misunderstanding which creates obstacles and makes people blind.
This piece draws on the exploration, the circumspection and the diffidence which guide the path to knowledge up to both the reconciliation and the osmotic fusion, as well as the feeling of getting lost into another entity and lastly to the sublimation of the human relation taken to the extreme.
Finally, this is a tale about the reacquisition of the individuality, the re-appropriation of one’s own integrity ready for a new journey where the atavistic process repeats itself tending to infinity. A tale built by corporeal shapes, by the organic movement of muscles and skin, and by the altered and nobilitated concreteness of the flesh.

Studio I Della Natura del Movimento from Antonino Chiaramonte on Vimeo.
Studio I Della Natura del Movimento (Study I On the Nature of Movement) is a short audiovisual composition that belongs to my PhD portfolio. The study investigates the relationships between sound, music, and the moving image in the absence of a narrative. The video material is mainly abstract, but its nature is concrete, that is, sourced from physical reality and filmed by means of a camera; it is organic life-like filming. The footage has been subsequently processed and detached from the original “source” with a more or less high degree of surrogacy. The same process is used for sound materials which are all derived from acoustic sources. Della Natura del Movimento has to be considered not concluded in itself but as the first movement of a longer composition, an audiovisual suite.

Della Natura del Movimento - Studio I from Antonino Chiaramonte on Vimeo.
This is another production included in my PhD Portfolio. This work explores "movement" as a source for fertile audiovisual relationship. Moving image and moving sound interact and create a fluid audiovisual experience. I deliberately chose high-quality video footage freely available on the Internet as raw material, realising the montage and video processing.

Director Statement.
Epoch is a visual representation of our connection to earth and it's vulnerable glory.
Our time here is esoteric, limited and intangible.
The fragility which exists in all aspects of life is one thing that is certain.
We are brittle, and so is Mother Earth.
