On Instagram: I’ve contemplated sharing the image on the left for many years, but when the 10 year challenge recently became a thing and the majority of conversations I’m seeing across so many pages is WEIGHT + physical appearance, I knew it was time to finally to shine a bright light on something I haven’t had the courage to share. The pic on the left is from 2008, just 3 years before I started Girl With Curves. My eating disorder was at its peak, and although you may see a smiling, confident girl in the image, I see a girl who hated herself and would stop at nothing to achieve what she thought was her “ideal weight,” barely eating, abusing diet pills and exercising obsessively. In these pictures I weighed 153 lbs, which is extremely low for my 5’10 height and naturally big frame. The dress I’m wearing is a size XS compared the XL I wear today. I post these pictures not to trigger sadness or shock, but show you that we SHOULD be focusing on the WISDOM and MINDSET that comes with age, vs physical appearance, when we look back at old pictures of ourselves. My journey to body confidence and self-love fuels my entire reason for starting Girl With Curves, to show women you CAN look + feel amazing at any size. 🤗 As someone who’s struggled with self-confidence from a very young age, my hope is that my openness in sharing my experiences helps my fellow curvy girls to realize that YOU ARE ENOUGH!! You’re beautiful exactly as you are, worthy of love and respect, but it starts with the way you love and respect YOURSELF. I’ve had so many moments throughout my almost 8 year career with GWC when I wanted to share this image, but didn’t have the courage to face this piece of myself, in fear that it would trigger past emotions. But today, I have more than enough courage + the confidence to own my truth, and I fully believe that while having an ED is a part of who I am, it does NOT DEFINE ME. Im 5'6", 150-158lbs, very muscular and not thin in any form of the word. Im 21 and i have a baby. My body has been put through a lot between my work and life. I am a farrier (black smith, horse shoer: i trim and shoe horses hooves), which is extremely demanding. I have always been very strong and it affected me negatively up until recently. Even as young as 10 i could outwork most boys and most women. But it made me feel too masculine. I wanted to be dainty, feminine. I started riding horses at nine and im now a trainer. Strength is a plus, no doubt, but i wanted to be pretty. Or look like jillian michaels. I hated my curves. They are too big to be skinny and too small to be what our culture calls “sexy” (think kim kardashian). I was boring and in the middle. Once i got married i found healing. My hubby proved that even at my worst i was still gorgeous and i was good enough. I had a small set back when i had the baby; stretched and safging boobs and flabby belly arent fun, but im happy now. I realize im not odd or ugly, i am a hard working, talented mom, wife, craftsmen and business owner who flaunts a beautiful vase shape.
