S4 E10: GIMME SHELTER
CBC Synopsis: An old friend of Mal’s gets into trouble with some dangerous people, and it’s up to Mal and Rose to keep him safe and find out what kind of business he’s really into; After going over the hood of a car, Jake is laid up with a bad injury and the medication Des gives him causes some strange dreams….
MauzyDay ~ In One Word: SOUP
Yes, soup…chicken soup…Leslie makes Jake chicken soup. If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is…next week, nuts….then….
I really liked this episode … lots of twists and turns…all the nightmare scenes…all the bungling with the file changing hands.
Favorite Scene:
Leslie sitting in the chair, waiting for Jake to wake up.
L: I didn’t think you were ever going to wake up.
J: Oh, you…are a sight ..for .. you know, sore ribs.
L: Chicken soup is more of a cold/flu food but I made you some anyway.
J: That was really sweet of you. Could you kiss me again…I’ve been having really weird dreams lately…I just want to make sure you’re…you know…real.
L: How’s this for real?
J: I’m convinced.
Memorable Moments:
Loved that picture of Becker in Leslie’s file! Bad hair day??!!!!
Des scaring off the bat wielding guy…kicking him in the shins. Then heading for Jake…
Des plumping up the pillow for Jake on the couch and taking care of him….Jake taking so many pills. Then Des taking some…they were just too funny throughout being so groggy.
Great shot by Malachy when he aims for the steam pipe to create a jet of steam at the bad guy (Dante Peterson).
Ok, the first nightmare scene … why was Leslie standing there in uniform? Hmmmm….
Jake dreaming about Maurice Becker trying to kill him.
Loved the rewind to the billiard hall … zipties as handcuffs!
The nightmare scenes with Nikki and the defibrillator and then both her and Allison, and then Allison in his bed.
Malachy visiting Becker at the pen…
Underground Mah Jong game !!!??? Bwa ha ha….(I would love to get my hands on an old Mah Jong game with ivory/bamboo tiles…should have done it years ago…darn.) I just loved the scene with Rose at the game, Des as the “light and power” repairman, and how he manages to get the key off Eileen— “What’s the matter with you, this isn’t the 7th grade dance. Get off of me.”
Indignant Rose is always fun to watch…accusing the players of cheating…Phonse throwing himself against Eileen’s car to get the alarm going.
Jake finally waking up with Leslie watching him.
The billiard hall scene where Malachy and Phonse stage a “fake” fight with each other to get Eileen and Dante. Very clever…except Phonse doesn’t get the gun…doh!
And the final scene with Jake and Becker…and the undercover RNC “guard”, taping the conversation…Becker’s threat to get Jake killed….
Becker to Jake: Never anger a man who has nothing to lose…Nothing to lose, Doyle! Remember that.
Oh, what will the finale bring?

J: Go away (Jake pushes him away with the broken pool cue).

Allan Hawco chats about Republic of Doyle’s Season 4 Finale, GTO’s, Theatre and More!

Allan Hawco sits down with The Arts Scene for an in-depth conversation, chatting about the season 4 finale of Republic of Doyle, the making of The Company Theatre, his love for cars (especially GTO’s!) and much more!
Republic of Doyle is a Canadian television series that made its debut on CBC Television back in 2010. The show – created by Allan Hawco, Malcolm MacRury, Perry Chafe – follows Malachy Doyle (Seán McGinley) and Jake Doyle (Allan Hawco), a father and son team of private investigators in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, putting themselves in rather difficult situations. Hawco is the co-creator, as mentioned before, executive producer, lead actor, writer and showrunner of the show.
Allan Hawco began his journey in the arts when he joined the National Theatre School of Canada, one of 13 candidates chosen by the school from a pool of thousands of applications. After graduating in 2000, Hawco joined various theatre companies and their productions before starting The Company Theatre with Philip Riccio. A Whistle in the Dark was the company’s inaugural production, putting both the company and both artistic directors on the map. 2009′s Feston won him three Dora Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Play. Their recent production, Speaking in Tongues, was directed by Philip Riccio and received great positive reception.
Hawco has starred in numerous television shows and films prior toRepublic of Doyle, including 2007′s Closing the Ring opposite Christopher Plummer, Shirley MacLaine, Neve Campbell and the late Pete Postlethwaite. His performance as Michael in 2009′s Love & Savagery won him an ACTRA Award nomination for Outstanding Male Performance. Other accolades he has received over the years include the presitgious Gascon-Thomas Award by the National Theatre School of Canada and the Outstanding Achievement Award by The Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame, presented to him by Gordon Pinsent. Both awards were presented in 2011.

S4 E8: MULTITASKING
CBC Synopsis: Jake finds himself juggling multiple cases while looking into attempts made on the life of his ex-girlfriend; Tinny’s relationship with her Uncle Jake is becoming strained due to her budding relationship with her father.
MauzyDay ~ In One Word: PHONES!
Yes, phones….ringing, vibrating, blocked calls….everywhere!!!! Jake was indeed multitasking just with the sheer volume of phone calls…from Walter, Allison, Kyla, Michael Stewart who is attempting to kill Allison, Colleen the “stalkee”, Des, Leslie, Malachy, Kathleen…and more. There were certainly a lot of pics being taken to add to Monica’s file and future “dirt.”
Did anyone notice Allan’s mom at the Duke having a cup of tea/coffee (it’s in the beginning part of this episode, about 7 minutes in when Jake is talking to Kyla)…I’m pretty sure it’s her, anyway. There’s a pic above that Allan tweeted from their Ireland trip, and a screen cap I did of her from this episode. Sure looks like her…I think that’s so neat. Apparently his dad works as a production assistant for them also, and his mom does “background work” according to this article in the Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/10/allan-hawco-republic-of-doyle_n_1194635.html).
Favorite Scene:
The dinner table and Malachy’s speech:
M: Jake, listen to your father for once.
J: Oh, great, a big wine speech.
M: Whatever you have to do…shag that…whatever I have to do, whatever it takes, do not lose this one, she’s the greatest thing that ever happened to you, and to us. In short, what I mean is, I want you two, Jake and Leslie…I want you to be at this table for a long, long time.
L: I’d like that, too.
J: I couldn’t agree more.
(and Des interjects that he’d also like to be at the table for “long times.”)
Memorable Moments:
Walter almost hanging himself when he goes to kick Jake for a sarcastic comment while he’s still in the noose and loses his footing on the stool.
Loved Des’ brown jacket to match Jake’s…and his gestures.
And wearing Allison’s jacket and the blond wig “running” from the van.
I was curious to see what would happen between Jake and Allison and I think toward the end she looked a little surprised that Jake did not make a move for her….that’s a good boy, Jake….
Favorite Quotes:
Leslie walks in when Colleen is reading Jake’s palm:
J: She was reading my future.
L: Maybe she could tell me the exact day I’m going to get fired—helps to be prepared.

L: I’m sorry about earlier.
J: What’s that saying?… “Let’s just kiss and make out.”

Kathleen calls Jake re: Tinny and Crocker and tells him Crocker is “still here” while he heals and Jake realizes how Crocker used him:

Des to Allison: I need you to take off your clothes….(she gives him an incredulous look)…some….of your clothes.

Leslie calling Jake:
J: Leslie…hi.
L: You know what I have to deal with right now? Traffic is calling me because they know we’re going out…wondering why your top secret surveillance van is on the sidewalk at the corner of Newtown and Howley. GO..GET..IT….please…and…hi.
J: Hi.

The final scene between Tinny and Jake:
T: We all know I really think of you as my Dad dad…don’t worry, I still loves ya.

S4 E9: RETRIBUTION
CBC Synopsis: When Jake is kidnapped and nearly burned alive, he escapes and teams up with Mal to track down his would-be killers and make sense of the whispers that a mysterious “boss” is behind the plot.
MauzyDay ~ In One Word: Stumped
Stumped?? Wha??? OK, I just could not come up with a good word to capture this episode….there’s so much potential for baaaaaad things to happen in upcoming episodes….so I’ll just get to the good stuff.
Favorite Scene:
A truly touching scene when Jake apologizes to Tinny for missing her graduation, with Tinny responding that it wasn’t a big deal…
Jake: It is a big deal…I love you … and I have something for you. It’s not much but it’s kind of like my good luck charm…(hands Tinny the necklace which is, I believe, a 1936 Newfoundland one cent coin “large”)
T: 1936?
J: That’s the year your great-grandfather joined the Newfoundland Rangers and he gave it to Dad when he joined the force, and then father gave it to me, and now…now I want you to have it. That’s all you get… in terms of a dowry…in case you ever marry Des.
SO SWEET!!!!!!
Memorable Moments:
Would be killer’s use of hockey mask disguise…
Malachy’s suspicion that Crocker might be behind everything…or Becker…
Tinny’s graduation…
Tinny’s confrontation with Kyla when she divulges that Monica paid her cash to dig up dirt on Jake…”she feels like Jake has the run of the police department and that Leslie Bennett isn’t doing her job.”
Leslie’s confrontation with Monica about digging up dirt on Jake for the newspaper…and later warning Monica and giving her transfer papers to fill out…I’m quite sure Monica’s got a lot more “dirt” and is not done yet. This may force her hand.
CAN I PUNCH MONICA’S SMIRKY LITTLE MOUTH NOW!!!!!!???????
And the ominous closing scene between Malachy and Maurice Becker:
Malachy: Diamonds and fake deaths….should have known it was you.
Becker: Not the Doyle I was expecting but it’s always nice to see you…pleasant surprise. … Your son has angered a lot of bad people over the years … I’m just one of them. but his time is coming, whether it’s me or someone else who takes him out, and there won’t be a thing that you can do about it, dad.

Hmmmm….it will definitely be interesting to see how all these angles play out.

L: Constable, I’ll take it from here.

Leslie to Jake: Be careful about Officer Eyeballs…if she gets anything on you or your dad she’ll bury ya.
J: I hear ya…and I really appreciate you having my back…and my front…and all of me really.

M: And if I don’t?
L: I’ll be talking with our superiors…and Monica, trust me…when they find out you bribed a reporter to slander one of your own…me…you’ll be transferred somewhere a whole lot worse.
