Thank you for being a safe space where we can come and have a civil discussion about season 3. It doesn’t always stay civil and I want to thank you for being there for us. ❤️
It will ALWAYS be a civil safe space around here so long as I can help it. 🩶

it's rare that we have a group rant session in here, I'm having a blast :')
And I like that the vibes are still good! It’s not bogged down with negativity - we recognize that we still got something out of season 3, but we also recognize that it could’ve been better!

i think my personal problem w s3 is that it felt more like bo-katan's story than a continuation of din's story. and ik that there will be some "crossover" type storylines (like there was in s2 + tbobf) but i just felt like SO much of s3's screentime was given to bo-katan that it felt more like the bo-katan show than anything else. but maybe i only feel that way bc i dont like bo-katan :/
Listen I love Bo-Katan and I always have, always will, but you're right in the sense that they showed this season through her perspective rather than Din's (at least, for most of it). They could've had her do all the same things but kept the narrative lens on Din, which would've made it feel more like it was about him.

Honestly they all knew how mid the season was and still had to do their best to sell it as the monumental phenomenon worth a 3 years wait 🤡
I mean obviously it's how marketing works, but maybe, ya know, don't fool your loyal audience and hype them up about an epic narrative that doesn't even happen? And then back down and pretend like said audience had no reason to believe it would??
See, I think their problem was they weren't confident enough. That's why the marketing was so... strange. Why things felt like they didn't line up.
Why was Pedro doing most of it alone? Katee should've been right alongside him the whole time. It would have made her bigger role feel a lot less disarming.
Carl and even Emily Swallow should've been there, too. And certainly Giancarlo. We all knew Moff Gideon would return.
It's just weird, man. It's really weird. It's like they weren't confident in this season in the first place, which is why I'm partially convinced that this season was the result of a pivot.

Also I better not see that “It’s because Pedro was busy” argument come up bc that’s NOT AT ALL why this happened. We still could have had reluctant leader Din with his helmet on the whole time okay

No Molly, you wanna know what was the craziest thing about the whole “reluctant manda’lor din djarin missed opportunity” drama? Was how the people of Star Wars and others gaslit us into thinking that “The Mandalorian” was about ALL mandalorians so this season was about Bo Katan.
NO IT WASNT!!!! IF IT WAS, IT WOULD BE FROM HER POINT OF VIEW!!!!
Also wouldn’t you change the title to “The Mandalorians”????
Tumblr media
NO BC I JUST HAD A CONVERSATION ABOUT THIS IRL LIKE...... WHAT?!
They could've said that they're challenging what it means to be a Mandalorian and left it at that. But to try to convince us that the title had always referred to Mandalorians in general instead of Din Djarin is CRAZYYYY especially when the subtitles STILL REFER TO DIN AS "THE MANDALORIAN"

That part about the foreshadowing with the blurrg is SO! IMPORTANT!! Because that has been my thought EVER SINCE THAT HAPPENED!
I think the end of the supposed trilogy of movies we're getting will have Din ruling and preparing Grogu to take his place. That would be the best way for Grogu to continue his father's legacy for the many, many years he'll have to live without him.

I got such a strong feeling that the original script for season 3 was entirely different. From some hints given by cast members (Katee looking a bit conflicted with editing choices, Temuera being confused that they didn't call him back for Boba, Ming-Na apparently doing reshoots but her character was literally never seen, that shot of Peli in the trailer that I don't remember ever seeing in her single 5 minutes appearance), the blatant logic holes and Favreau sort of trying to brush the questionnable narrative decisions aside in interviews, it really looks like nobody got the season 3 they expected. The tone of the trailers and marketing is so different, too. We all know how tricky production was, with Covid and all, plus with all the other shows and everything booming, I wouldn't be surprised if they just had to scrap stuff and piece a season together last minute for whatever reason. It's almost too disjointed to be voluntary, especially knowing how well crafted the first 2 seasons are.
No, you're honestly so right. One interview that really had me scratching my head was one Giancarlo did, where he talked about the beautiful journey Din was going to go on in season 3 where he was learning more about himself and seeing his full potential and what he was capable of.
That clearly sounds like a reluctant leader type arc, but... as we know, it wasn't. I think he was working off of what he originally knew about the season.
But, yeah, this is all just us guessing.

No because you're right, and I think that's why Din's story this season had people so divided.
Because we technically did have the story, but it wasn't acknowledged or developed nearly as much as it should've been - because they decided, for some reason, to show it through the lens of Bo rather than Din. We should have seen Din grappling with it all rather than her. I think that's where the heart of the issue is.
I love Bo, but she should have remained secondary to Din in terms of the POV this season. It wouldn't have diminished her role any less, but it would've kept the focus on the titular character and his role in the story.

The only way I can justify (to myself at least) the Din’s arc in season 3 is that at least he gets to do what makes him happy. He can travel around the galaxy with his son hunting down imperial remnants. He finally gets to live his life on his terms. With his creed intact and his son by his side.
Would reluctant leader have been a better story? Absolutely! Am I irritated it played out like it did? Absolutely. I wanted back story on Din. I wanted to see him really find himself. It would have been so much better to have him, and Grogu, discovering themselves then get reunited at the end of season 3.
So to keep my disappointment at bay I think to myself “at least Din Djarin is happy.”
This is absolutely a wonderful way of thinking about it, and it's what I've been doing since season 3 first aired, too. What's difficult is knowing that both could've been true. He could have forced himself to be uncomfortable and recognize his leadership potential, and then still given himself the life he wanted at the end of it all.
But you're right. What matters now is that Din is happy where he's at.

And the craziest part about this is that they knew it should've happened. The marketing showed Din with the Darksaber whenever possible. Jon even acknowledged it in the behind-the-scenes special for this season.
They knew what the most compelling choice was and... didn't make it. It will never make sense to me.

That's it I'm going to make a season 3 rewrite where 1) Din's Boba Fett arc didn't happen until season 3 and 2) he was a reluctant leader
Do we want a novel format, or a script format?

MOLLY RANTS LETS GO!
(Jokes aside, it's perfectly legitimate to have criticisms and be honest about the things you're not happy with. That doesn't invalidate your love for the show in the slightest <3)
WELL LIKE listen listen listen, I understand trying to subvert audience expectations, but when you've made a clear path and you have a compelling story... WHY WOULD YOU SHY AWAY FROM IT AND THEN TELL THE FANS IT WAS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN???
Reluctant leader Din didn't have to last, but it should have at least happened for a time. THAT was the compelling story choice.
Din Djarin could have led their people against Moff Gideon with Bo-Katan's help, gotten her to respect him as a leader, and then retired the role to her - with the Darksaber destroyed - to go live on Nevarro, making the choice to yet again put his son above all else by focusing on his training as a Mandalorian apprentice.
