The Last Of us spoilers below
There are a few scenes in the TLOU that show how desensitised and almost curious of violence Ellie is.
The first scene would be when Joel beat that officer to death. In her eyes, that act of violence was almost an act of kindness she'd never been shown before. A protective kind of act that she finds herself drawn to and thats why she bothers Joel so much more than she does Tess after that scene.
The second scene is when she finds that runner in the basement of the stash house. Her first instinct isn't to run away, maybe due to her immunity so it makes her almost cocky in her exploration of it. So when she cuts it, she's not afraid, just curious. Then she stabs it because she knows it can't hurt her but she can hurt it. And what we know from the game, she has plenty reason to hate them.
And I hope this is explored more as the series continues
