Hi, Hae-in. I'm Baek Hyun-woo. I'm your husband. You must be confused and scared. Me too. You don't remember anything and a stranger is claiming to be your husband. You must be so confused. But… this is good news. You… You were very sick, but you're better now. You must be curious about what kind of person you used to be. It must be upsetting that you can't remember. But don't worry. Because I… I remember everything. I'll tell you everything… that I know. I shouldn't cry. This will be the first time you see my face. And let me warn you. Even if I'm not your ideal type, I'm sorry, but I can't break up with you. Because we agreed not to part ways just because of a change of mind. Even if you don't like me… No matter what happens… Even if… you forget the promise we made, I promised to be… by your side. Let's welcome the first snow, stick by each other, and spend our everyday lives together. Let's fill up that empty candy jar of yours. We can do it. Because it was fate that brought us together. I love… I love you, Hae-in. I've always loved you… and will continue to do so.

"So what did you sacrifice for yours?"
My nail technician asked me with a smile.
Traditional witches — those who inherited it — can recognize each other at first glance.
And I could tell she was from Samar, one of the most notoriously supernatural places in the Philippines.
You see, while witchcraft in the Western world in 2022 is all about cute tarot cards and cheap crystals on Amazon, witchcraft in the purest parts of the Philippines is still the way it always has been. Pain and retribution. Magical healing and definite fortunetelling.
Some say it’s bullshit. But if you haven’t gone there yourself and truly witnessed it, you have no right to speak.
And those of you who aren’t just pretending will know this: A witch’s powers come at a price. You have to sacrifice something in order to secure it.
“You first,” I told her.
“My beauty,” Bertha said. That’s what we’ll call her.
“Nah, you still have it.” She does.
“Then why do you think I’m a manicurist?” she asked. “I could’ve been Miss Universe. You have no idea.”
“How was your initiation like?” I asked her.
She said it was her grandfather who had it. He surrounded his house with wax apple and mango trees. Whenever his neighbors would ask for permission to take some fruits, he would always gladly give it. But one time, a bunch of travelers passed by and didn’t think to ask first. One died on the spot, the other’s mouth rotted for days before he too died, and the third was left alive as a warning to others.
“Was it your grandpa’s pet entities living in the trees, or…?” I clarified.
“Orisons planted with the trees. The strongest kind of witchcraft.”
“Yes. When you can hurt, heal and help with just words and nothing more, you’re among the most powerful,” I added.
When her grandpa was in his late 90s, and his shoulders were almost touching his knees, he still wouldn’t die. Because it — his power — wouldn’t let him. Not until he’s passed it on. But his son, Bertha’s dad, was a devout Catholic and wanted nothing to do with this “evil”. His daughter, Bertha’s aunt, failed the inheritance ritual when she ran away screaming from a snake in the forest.
Bertha, then still really just a girl, had always been in awe of how everyone feared her grandfather. Unwealthy though they were, no one ever did them harm. They were afraid to. People had more respect for them than they did for the Mayor, the Chief of Police and the old-money families in their province. So she asked her grandpa to pass it on to her.
In the dead of night, Bertha’s grandpa took her to the forest, which was only nearby. When they came to a gigantic tree, he spoke a foreign incantation, and a cave opened underneath it.
“Always look straight ahead. No matter what you hear, never turn even the slightest,” his grandpa instructed. “And follow my exact footsteps, even if there seems to be a hole where I stepped.”
And so she did. Even when an enormous snake slithered to where her grandfather stood just a moment before, she stepped on it. Not fearlessly, but bravely.
“It was very anticlimactic,” she told me. “There was no fearsome fairy waiting at the end of the path. Nor a well of shining diamonds, or a gathering of my ancestors’ ghosts. There was just darkness and quiet. The purest kind of both.”
Her grandfather started speaking. “She has no child to give up. She is only a child herself. She has no wealth to sacrifice. We neither have nor desire it. She has no talent to offer. She can neither sing nor recite poetry. But by gods, is she beautiful.”
“Bertha, are you willing to give it up?” he asked.
“Yes,” she answered.
Bertha started screaming. As if boiling water was devouring her skin. Her chest felt like it was on fire. She was being burned alive. She fainted.
Her grandfather told her the sacrifice lasted about 10 seconds. She said it felt like it took years. Her body remains scarred to this day.
“Why is it worth it?” I asked. A loaded question. Of course it’s worth it.
“Some people train their whole lives to be able to defend themselves. Others spend millions of money on a cure for their illnesses. I only have to utter a word, and all harm sent towards me will ricochet. I may get COVID, but I will never die, unless I’m ready.”
“Awesome,” I said.
“Your turn,” she reminded me.
“Would you rather have my answer, or that?” I asked, pointing to the iconic green box of Patchi beside my Palm Springs Mini.
She laughed. “I’ll have the chocolate. You keep your secrets.”

How to Tell Ghosts, Entities and Humans Apart
As citizens of multiple realms, witches often come across supernatural beings. But it would be stupid to attribute every strange encounter to magic. Did you really see a creature of the occult? Or was that just your weird ex on the lurk?
Skin
Ghosts appear to me as shadowy figures. They always have black, see-through skin. Entities, on the other hand, tend to have unrealistically smooth and even skin. No creases, no pores, no contour – when even the most delicate human skin has imperfections and variations.
Philtrum
Entities have no philtrum – that vertical groove between our lips and nose, right above the Cupid’s bow. This is in relation to the above. Because their skin is so flawless, there are no indentations. Also in light of the above, it follows that in ghosts, you would not even notice this.
Hair
Whether they are bigger or smaller than humans, entities have cartoon-looking hair. You cannot make out the separate strands. It just looks like one, shiny blob. Because like their skin, their hair is extremely smooth. While ghosts – usually souls of the long-dead – tend to wear a hat, a hood or a veil.
Scent
Ghosts are incapable of emitting a smell. Entities, however, rival our perfumes and garbage. When they exude a strongly sweet smell, it is because they mean well. But when something smells rotten, and you cannot locate the source, it is likely coming from a very angry entity.
Stare
The longer you stare at a ghost, the more their face becomes monstrous. Because you are exhausting their ability to stay corporeal. So you will see their features melting… Unlike humans, entities rarely blink. And the blacks in their eyes are like liquid. You will notice them flowing.
Voice
In timbre, volume and accent, all three have similarities. But ghosts can speak without opening their mouth, though they tend not to use words when communicating. Entities are talkative. Many like saying nasty words for fun. And they sometimes speak in old languages you may not understand.
Atmosphere
This is the most important and obvious of them all. In fact, this is the only clue I really observe.
Humans do not change a room’s atmosphere. Ever. We affect the mood of the other people in the room. But the space itself is immune to our influence.
Ghosts, however, make everything slightly darker when they are around. Light simply dims and flickers in their presence. Therefore, it also tends to get colder.
As for entities, they silence the atmosphere. The air conditioner’s hum goes away… The crickets stop chirping… The cars outside go quiet… Because entities are powerful beings who demand to be felt.

5 Reasons Divination Can Fail
No matter how gifted a diviner is, we are only human. There are secrets that the Universe will not reveal to anyone.
1) The querent is a witch.
And if you are both witches, then they are more powerful than you. Some witches do not need to cast a protection spell to be safe from intrusion. If they are somehow skeptic of, or antagonistic towards, a tarot reader or a psychic, they will subconsciously repel them.
2) The future is still unwritten.
Destiny is a world map, not a Google Street View. The oceans and the mountains of our life were written in the stars and carved into our palms when we were born. But the crossroads, the ponds and the oases are something we create ourselves. If they have not been drawn yet, then there is no way we can see them.
3) The powers that be are blocking you.
Supernatural power involves hierarchy. Mortals have some. Gods have more. If the querent’s divine parent does not wish for them to know about their tomorrow, then they will build a firewall no human can go through.
4) Lesser spirits are interfering.
The invocation of your gods or of your higher self is a crucial part of divination. It invites the truth in and blocks out the lies. When it is not done right, malicious and misleading entities can interfere during a reading.
5) Hubris has ruined your gifts.
Some psychics forget that the occult is bigger than them. Claims of absolute accuracy and 100% guarantees anger the gods of the occult and the powers that be. To get your abilities back, relearn some humility.
To be better at divination outside of such circumstances, all one needs are undying faith and endless practice.

Someone else had made a post about this a bit ago, but I really love how the show has turned the red string of fate/"we're destined for each other because of an interaction we had as kids" trope on its head through the storylines Hae-in has with Eun-seong and Hyun-woo.
Hae-in and Eun-seong had past interactions at the orphanage and Eun-seong saved Hae-in from the dog and then Hae-in gave him her handkerchief for the cut on his leg. Eun-seong holds onto that experience and believes that he and Hae-in should be together because of their past interactions as kids. In another kdrama, Eun-seong holding onto that belief and meeting Hae-in again in college could have resulted in Eun-seong and Hae-in actually getting together. There theoretically would be a lot there with Eun-seong and Hae-in's traumatic pasts where they could have connected and fallen in love. But, this show turned that interaction on its head where Hae-in doesn't give a fuck about their past and would rather have nothing to do with Eun-seong because he's creepy. Hae-in's storyline with Eun-seong shows that the red string of fate doesn't mean anything if you become obsessive and possessive over it.
Hae-in and Hyun-woo also have a past connection through two different interactions. The first is when Hyun-woo saves Hae-in from drowning and the second is when Hyun-woo gives Hae-in the bandaid and ends up with her MP3 player when they're teenagers. Even though they didn't know about these two events when they met and fell in love, they still ended up together. But, due to so much miscommunication and negative feelings towards one another, Hae-in and Hyun-woo were headed towards their relationship ending until Hae-in's diagnosis. Hae-in's storyline with Hyun-woo shows that the red string of fate might be enough to help a couple get together, but it isn't going to keep that couple together if they don't work to maintain a healthy relationship with positive communication.

Last night, I prayed more than I had done in my entire life. I said I'd do nothing, but cry every day, drink a ton of alcohol, sleep on the street, and live recklessly if you died. That's a threat, not a prayer. I don't care. If you die, I'll give up on myself. You just watch. Don't be scared. You're not going to die. You won't die. I won't let you.

I see a woman unwilling to see herself or take accountability for her own recklessness. Who seeks out her own self-destruction so she can preempt whatever pain she sees coming her way. Who will run straight into danger, just to avoid fucking feeling something.
