Love this take 💕 I can appreciate anyone who thinks about the hobbit as much as I do 😆
I relate to Bilbo a tremendous amount so this HC is mostly projection lol but I always viewed Bilbo’s longing for Bagend as hiraeth “the feeling of longing for a home that no longer exists or never was” he misses the home he’s always known but longs for a new and exciting life he misses a place that doesn’t exist bcuz although he can travel and have visitors from old friends he’ll always be seen as odd in the shire and things will never quite be the same again
Bagend was and always would be his home but things are different
Idk I view his longing for home as more so the longing for how the way things were before he felt he was changed or longing for peace and familiarity
I feel like Thorin dying is what tainted the adventure enough to make Bilbo finally give into that feeling of homesickness
What I mean when I say projection is when I moved away from home for the first time I was so happy to finally be doing what I wanted with my life but when things got hard I would think about my parents and my family home, how simple things were when I was a kid ask myself if all of this hardship was even worth it if I could just go back to a place that was familiar and felt safe to me
That went on for a few years and I was happy then something terrible happened and that was my breaking point and I finally moved back to my home town
So I’m 100% open to any and all other interpretations and opinions I know mine is very biased lol im just happy to be able to talk to other ppl about the hobbit!!
Sorry this is all over the place I’m writing this at work 😆
Just reread The Hobbit 😩 and I stand by my opinion:
📣 Bilbo would have stayed in Erebor if Thorin didn’t die 📣

Having some feelings this evening about Frodo’s reaction to people around him being corrupted by desire for the One Ring. How generally devoid it is of any blame placed on that person, and how he instead treats it as a tragedy to spare others from by distancing himself.
It’s a big deal in the latter books that Frodo wants to show Sméagol kindness if possible because things have progressed so far that Frodo can recognize his own experience in him. But what’s really making me stare at a wall right now are Frodo’s early days reactions even before the personal identification is as strong.
Basically, I can’t stop thinking about how deeply Frodo’s reaction to that last encounter with Boromir is informed by the fact that the first person to ever try and take the ring from Frodo was actually Bilbo. The fact that the first person Frodo ever saw corrupted to that point, even for a moment, was the kind, clever, caring uncle who adopted and taught him, and who Frodo thinks the world of.
Just thinking about the personal relationship Frodo had with the very first person he saw the Ring affect and how fundamentally that set the tone for his understanding of it for the entirety of the journey.

I was going through references for dwarven clothes and stumbled upon those little hats dwarflings wear and i couldn't help myself but imagine Dwobbit Frodo wearing one. Then i ended up with a whole outfit lol. I wanted to make two variants. One for winter, explaining why Frodo is wearing boots, and another one for less colder seasons. I also wanted to depict the duality of his character, where he's a very sweet and a little bit shy boy and where he's acting more boisterous and adventurous! His design is still under development and i plan on adding more details!
Also i just cant not draw Thorin ugly crying whenever he sees his son (he understands Gloin more now)

You're telling me a straight hobbit went to war for his "best friend's" kingdom and then happened to never marry and adopt a child?

Knowing that Thorin always gets lost, and knowing that they had to follow the path, did the company really follow Thorin's lead into Mirkwood?

I love how entirely guilty Boromir feels after trying to get the ring from Frodo. The way he calls out to him after realizing what he’s done, the way he falls to the ground and cries. He was more than this moment, and he bravely defended his little friends, making them seem important to the cause and keeping them alive. I love him. He’s imperfect, but noble. He was more than that moment. He was all the moments before, and the moments after.

Dís and Thorin actually should look really similar and so when Dís comes to Erebor, Bilbo sees her in the halls and says "hello darling🥰" bc he doesn't realize at first glance that it's her ☠️☠️☠️
And she's super fucking confused but just assumes it's a hobbit thing, and then like. 5 minutes later when Bilbo is doing whtvr he's doing, he just. Thinks. And then. Realizes.
And freaks the fuck out and tries to find her cuz "oh my god yeah, Thorin said his sister was coming soon how could I be so stupid oh my god I must look insane I hope I didn't offend her-"
And Dís and Thorin are just talking and catching up and Bilbo walks in super embarrassed and Dís greets him with a "Hello darling🥰" bc she assumes it's hobbit customs to say that.
Now Thorin is confused and Bilbo freaking tf out bc he thinks he's being made fun of and Dís is just sorta. Chilling and having a great time

I personally feel that it all comes down to preference for the writer and the reader
It’s disappointing when something isn’t formatted the way you want but not everything can be catered to us :(
I personally prefer the block text 😅
I think a better solution would be to add an option to label your work as a certain format and then to be able to filter the formats when searching for a fic ☺️
I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip
Using a random fic of mine as example..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The left example: ✅✅✅
The right example: ❌❌❌
Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!
If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…

Quick PSA, if you get one of those "Work scanned, AI use detected" comments on AO3, just mark them as spam.
Some moron apparently built a bot to annoy or prank hundreds of authors.
There is no scanning process, your work doesn't actually resemble AI writing, it's all bullshit. Mark the comment as spam (on AO3, not the email notification you got about the comment!) and don't let it get to you.

It’s been a while since I posted it and I have some new followers so here’s my (mostly) Bagginshield playlist (with some songs that remind me of lotr sprinkled in)
lol some aus I made up, some headcanons, some ‘canon’ compliant
If anyone wants the reason for any of my song picks just ask it’s one of my favourite things overall about 👀

Me in the group chat on the morning of March 25th, the day the One Ring was destroyed: Fun Tolkien fact! Sauron’s original name, Mairon, can be translated as “precious,” which means that when Gollum called the ring his precious, it’s like he was talking directly to Sauron. Isn’t it interesting that Sauron isn’t his first name? The Elves began calling him Sauron, which means “the abhorred,” after he started doing evil stuff. And he just leaned into the name because, well, he turned evil. Actually, Sauron has a lot of names. At different points in his storyline, he also goes by Gorthaur, Annatar, and Zigur–
My friends: Is today a Sauron-related day or something?
Me: FUNNY YOU SAY THAT–

we don’t talk enough about the fact that there was a period of time when bilbo was in possession of the one ring, the arkenstone, and a mithril shirt. that’s one hell of a collection and he was most excited about an acorn…

It kind of wrecks me when the media reduces Legolas to the overpowered hot guy who defies gravity.
Like...
Did we watch the same movies?
Not only is this guy just an insanely honorable and fierce member of the Fellowship, but he's an infinitely heartfelt and dedicated friend. He would go to the ends of the earth to follow Aragorn, to save Merry and Pippin, to fight in the name of Frodo Baggins.
He's lost his mother, he was raised by a grieving and emotionally absent father, he was sheltered from the rest of the world for years, he went from insulting and threatening dwarves to protecting and practically EXISTING for one. Not to mention everything he did post war of the ring, uniting his people yet removing himself from his royal status??
And just to think, he has to grapple with immortality. To other elves it doesn't matter, but to him, his entire life has become these mortal friends he's grown to call family. And he has to go on living while they all slowly die.
And yeah, he's a fucking INSANE FIGHTER. Like BEYOND REASON.
I get that to the dude bros he's just a hot guy for the girls to thirst over but in reality he's just as complex as the rest of them and I'd really like for us to acknowledge it for once.
