holy shit - im a masters student
hihi’s, in the midst of a global panaroma, I am in my last semester of my 4th year meaning - full fledge master-ing and thesis! Going to be working on ALS genes and studying how one of them (TDP-43) functions in ALS and miRNA functionality.
Might just yell into the void here as the months go by until May - but its nice to keep note of academic cornerstones here as I’ve had this dead blog since 2016 when I graduated high school, so cheers to this slow grind.
Hoping for my survival lol (and some clarity as to what the fuck am I doing here).

📝🌱my work from home routine🌱📝
Tumblr media
hi everyone, today i’d thought i’d share how i’m currently spending my days as a grad student working from home. i find these posts to be helpful so i can get an idea of how others are spending their time while working from home, since it’s something i am learning how to do myself!
i try to adhere to this pretty much every day so that i can hold myself accountable.
7:30 - 9:00 am
📌 morning activities
wake up, make coffee, eat breakfast
browse internet/tumblr/social media
get dressed in something other than what i slept in
9:00 - 12:15 pm
📌 start working for the day
watch online lecture videos for class
attend virtual office hours if occurring that day
attend virtual meetings if scheduled for that day
work on homework assignments, skype with a classmate and work together if possible
any research work that needs to be done: data analysis, file organization, writing conference papers
12:15 - 12:45 pm
📌 afternoon break
have lunch
clean up dishes from the morning/afternoon
quick internet browsing break
tidy up apartment
evaluate what else needs to be done on the to do list
12:45 pm - 5:00 pm
📌 afternoon push
wrap-up anything i’m working on for homework
continue data analysis/writing, stopping at a convenient point
schedule tomorrow’s skype call with classmate
reply to any emails that may have come in
make a plan for tomorrow’s work
5:00 pm - bedtime
📌 evening relaxation
go for a walk outside, call a friend if possible while doing so
eat dinner
leisure activities: watch youtube videos, browse internet, work on crochet, paint, call a family member or have a skype date with a friend, light yoga
clean up remaining dishes
go to sleep at a reasonable hour so i don’t offset my schedule too much lol
obviously these aren’t super strict times, just an estimate based on how i’ve been living it out the past week and a half. i’m most productive in the morning and try to get the bulk of my work done as early in the day as possible so i can stop early for the night. i’m learning every day how to best structure my time so my schedule is ever-evolving. happy working 🌟

Seeing Vaccines
Lymph nodes are the ‘training centres’ for the immune system, where immune cells learn to recognise and respond to unwanted invaders such as bacteria and viruses. Vaccines take advantage of this training system, introducing harmless substances derived from disease-causing organisms (known as antigens) into the body, which teach immune cells to spot the disease when we encounter it for real. But this approach only works if enough antigen gets into the lymph nodes to mount an effective response. This image is a composite of more than 1,200 lymph nodes from mice, which have been labelled in a way that reveals the amount of antigen each one has received, with red being more and blue being less. Using techniques like this will help researchers to identify antigens that trigger the most potent immune responses and develop new vaccines for diseases that we can’t currently protect against, such as HIV and cancer.

Hi! I used to colour code all of my notes. Like, *COLOUR CODE* to the point of there being 7 different colours on my pages, and I found it way too distracting and I couldn't focus on one thing because my eyes would just dance around the page. Now, my notes are all in the same colour pen and it feels like I just get lost in a sea of black ink. Any tips on how to make it nicer to read without going crazy on the colours??
hey!
i know the frustration of looking at a page and being overwhelmed with colours and think “oh crap, i need to know all of this”.
i now cater my colour coding to each specific lot of notes (no system works for all notes!) and it’s a lot less overwhelming. i would also recommend not highlighting massive chunks of text because there’s no point - it’s a waste of highlighter and time! instead, highlight the core words that will help you remember the whole section you’re trying to revise.
here’s some of my notes for an example:

HOW TO PLAN & PREPARE FOR AN ESSAY-BASED EXAM!
I get a lot of asks and messages about how I go about studying towards an essay-based exam so I thought I’d summarise how I prepare a thorough plan that I can reproduce in exam conditions and guide an exam essay.
I start this process 3 weeks before the day of the exam which leaves me plenty of time to revise plans and condense them as much as possible without losing the key ‘skeleton’ of my argument.
Obviously, this is just how I approach psychology essay-based exams and it won’t apply to every subject. But I’m the sure the base plan can be manipulated to suit most essay-based subjects and topics! :-))

The Ivy Lee Method for Peak Productivity
At the end of each day, write down the six things you need to accomplish tomorrow. Do not write down more than six tasks and they can be anything. You choose.
Prioritise those six items in order of their true importance.
Tomorrow when you wake up and are fed and ready concentrate only on the first task. Work until the first task is finished before moving on to the second task.
Approach the rest of your list in the same fashion. At the end of the day, move any unfinished items to a new list of six tasks for the following day.
Repeat this process every day.

23.11.18 // MATLAB 💻
I’ve been working on a group project programming an experimental task for the past two weeks, as part of my MATLAB course. If you’re planning on studying neuroscience or data science the chances of you having to take some sort of programming course are very high! It can be MATLAB, Python or R and although I’m currently enrolled in a MATLAB course, I’m also learning Python on the side via DataCamp! It’s a great resource if you’re thinking about learning coding/programming and you need it for data science! I will write a separate blog post on my experience programming once I’m done with this course!

I’m about to start an honors thesis for undergrad and was wondering if you could give some tips on starting and organizing!! Did you just have a notebook or anything ??
check out my post on my thesis progress journal! that’s basically how i stay on top of stuff and organize all of my thoughts.
i also think that creating essentially a giant to-do list with all the steps from start to finish can be really helpful, unless you get overwhelmed easily. i’m a fan of big ass to do lists bc it helps me schedule things and know exactly what i should be doing and when (as well as what’s coming up next). i use a kanban board in notion to move things around from ‘to-do’, ‘currently doing’, ‘done’, ‘to redo’, etc.
i don’t know much about honors thesis, but my masters lasts about 2-3 years. so i tend to break things down month by month. so for example, may-june-july were my material analysis months. august-october-december will be writing months, september-november will be editing months + additional research/potential visits to archives outside of the city. (this doesn’t mean that i can’t write in september or edit in october, but it gives me a general idea of my main focus of that month, excluding smaller tasks)

People don’t hate math. They hate being confused, intimidated, and embarrassed by math. Their problem is with how it’s taught.
