“We don’t have a damn thing
in common, Belloq. You care
about yourself. Profit. You
only care about the truth if
you can benefit from it.”
« For what other purpose is truth
but to benefit the living? You,
Jones, spend far too often among
dusty skeletons and trinkets
to understand their true value. »

« Unfortunately, my schedule is very important to several other parties... isn’t that right? » He looked to the Greeks, who wore shoulder holsters and were clearly less than happy with the intrusion. « Very much so. Please, take a seat. » He set out a chair and offered it to the young woman.
« I am Dr. René Belloq. » He placed a hand over the manuscript unfurled across the table, his palm hovering just centimeters over its surface. « This text has been preserved for millennia. But could it speak, I am certain you and I both wish it to yield its great secrets. »
He cast a meaningful glance at his associates and returned to perusing the documents.

He dropped his hand.
« Don't sell yourself short,
Miss Ravenwood. You are a very
attractive woman. Intelligent,
sharp-witted. I have much to
offer you. We share a passion
for rarity. »
she pulls away, scoffing at his attempt.
“Then why not just tell me what you want.
I don’t know why you feel the need to woo
me to get what you want.”

« A most curious thing to say
for a man in your position.
Do tell me, however do you
manage to get in such filthy
places? »
Belloq tugged on the knees of his suit to squat down beside the rival treasure hunter. He pulled a handkerchief from his breast pocket and lightly passed the silk square to the other man, as if it would made a difference against the grime and blood-- or more probably to make that statement that it clearly wouldn't.
« If you run, you may yet
catch the boat. The trans-
action was completed. I'm
afraid you lost, Jones. »
"Ah, Dr. Jones. You certainly have a poor taste in habits."
“I’ll take my bad habits over yours any day, Belloq.”

She was smart, very smart. He leaned back and
refused to take the bait; she didn’t need to be provoked
into rash action.
« Let us be acquaintances,
then, and occupy stations
of mutual respect. As you
have said, I do know what
I want-- for unlike Dr.
Jones, I do look to the...
present. »
He reached for a loose lock of her hair.
“You all have the same view, you just know what you want.
Plato is famous for saying ‘ The measure of a man is what
he does with power. ’ Power can make or break even the
strongest willed of men. You want something from me, I know
that much. So why don’t you just tell me so that I can tell you
no.”

Belloq circled the table as his associates unrolled a scroll and held it flat for his inspection. He folded his hands behind his back and leaned in to scan it briefly, then he gave a curt shake of his head and sharp command in Greek, and it was rolled up again and exchanged for another.
When the voice echoed through the exhibit hall he swore softly, and turned sharply to witness one of his hired hands lift a revolver in the stranger's direction the moment she showed in the doorway.
He shoved the muzzle down again, quickly berating the man in his own language. Nom de Jésus, it was a woman. Very unfortunate that she had to get involved, but he would certainly not be party to this woman's murder in this museum. There was a flavour of distinct sacrilege about it.
« My apologies, but I am constrained to very specific schedule, » the Frenchman informed her, broadly waving her over to the table scattered with ancient manuscripts and grinning at her with a rather pleasant smile not shared by the two Greeks that also accompanied him. « Come here! »

Evy pursed her lips. The museum was closed. She’d locked it herself nearly an hour ago. As far as she knew, she was thoroughly alone. And yet… Either she was going completely mad or there were distinct footsteps coming from the main exhibit hall. Setting down the stack of books she’d been shelving, Evy took a few cautious steps towards the doorway.
“Hello? Dr. Bey, is that you?”
Silence.
“You know, it’s hardly good form to sneak about like this!” she called, hoping she sounded more confident than she felt. After all, it was perfectly ridiculous to be afraid of the sound of a few creaks… “Is anyone there?”

“I know my own value, sweetheart.
That’s why I’m not with him. Jones
values things that have either been
dead for thousands of years or lost
to time itself. You – I just don’t LIKE
you.”
He held her gaze for several more seconds before looking aside. She was beautiful, and powerful in her own right. He did want this woman, perhaps the more so since Dr. Jones had failed to have her. She may reconsider once she reviewed her options, and if she didn’t-- beautiful women were plentiful, and finding the rarities was an art he always sought to perfect. Belloq chuckled lightly.
« Perhaps... with my unique
view of things long past,
you will discover I do
appreciate the finer things
of the present. »
