I've been thinking about how I could contribute to the ACD/Granada Sherlock Holmes fandom for a while, seeing as I'm neither an artist, a writer, or anything actually useful lol. But then I realized something I myself always treasure are curated fic recs, which I could actually do! I've read probably like 25% of all the h/w ACD and Granada fics on ao3, so I compiled a short list for anyone who is just starting out with the fandom. Without further ado, may I present

Eden’s Top Picks for Beginning ACD/Granada Fics:

The Adventure of the Doctor's Heart by mistyzeo 12k | Rated E Summary: Holmes has observed much of Watson's habits and tastes over time, which is why it surprises him when his friend objects strangely to a folk song sung at the conclusion of a case. Disturbed by the Doctor's unexpected display of emotion, Holmes becomes determined to lift his spirits by any means necessary, with mixed results. Notes: obviously if you're going to read canonverse h/w, you are going to read mistyzeo. this one is just so good and angsty and features music (!!). it's got some steaminess but it also has wooing. basically it has everything you ever need. this is my odyssey, my iliad, my hamlet, etc.

Cameo by what_alchemy 8k | Rated M | For Archive Users Only Summary: Holmes and Watson become embroiled in a case Scotland Yard refuses to acknowledge. A soulmate AU. Notes: i honestly skipped over this fic for a while, since i'm not the biggest fan of soulmate aus. do not make the same mistake i did, because this shit HITS. this fic has hit after hit: soulmate-mark based case for our main duo, angst, hiatus feels, MORE ANGST, and ofc a happy ending. ugh. read this fic if you enjoy being happy.

A Tide That Does Not Turn by tweedisgood 3k | Rated T Summary: Holmes is a very bad patient with a devoted doctor who adores him. Watson wishes it was safe to speak up, but his friend is a tide that does not turn. Notes: do NOT read this if you don't like angst... ok now i'm sensing a pattern. anyways this is the first hurt/no comfort fic i read for this tag and i literally have cried more than enough tears over it. poor, poor watson :( iconic author though, read everything they write!

The Adventure of the Glad Outlaw by radondoran 7k | Rated T Summary: While Sherlock Holmes solves the mystery of a student's disappearance, Dr. Watson is more puzzled by the changing dynamic between his flatmate and himself. Notes: cute pastiche! a nice little mystery and a nice little get-together. ahhhhhh.... this fic is like cotton candy to me, so sweet and fluffy. defo recommend

Hands by MinorObsessions (draculard) 1.4k | Rated T Summary: Naturally, there are some things Watson thinks about Holmes that don't make it into the books. Notes: i'm also in the star trek fandom, so if you know anything about that then you know that hands are kind of A Thing in both circles and ergo i now Have A Thing about hands. so this is a nice little ode to holmes' hands, featuring some doctoring by watson AND a nice reverse appraisal at the end. it's so sweet :)

Conductor of Light by ColebaltBlue 1.4k | Rated T Summary: A Victorian stiff upper lip won't prevent you from falling in love, but it might prevent you from realizing it. Notes: they finally get their shit together! honestly i would recommend this fic to anyone just starting out with h/w fics in any medium. the characterization and dialogue is A1, and their argument is really realistic to me, idk. also features the iconic HOUN quote for its title so props to that!

A (Mis)fortunate Man by sans_patronymic 1.5k | Rated T Summary: December, 1880. Watson writes a note which may be his last. December, 1899. Watson writes back. Notes: READ THE TAGS BEFORE READING. this was a gut-wrenching read but god i cried at the end for watson. don't worry, this one has a happy ending. ugh now i wish there was a second chapter where watson lets holmes read the letters. to sum up: oof, my heart

The Second Smartest Man in London by FairSinner 73k | Rated E Summary: Dr John Watson returns from Afghanistan to Victorian London, wounded, traumatised and alone. When he meets Sherlock Holmes, his life begins to seem worth living again. But Holmes is a man who despises sentiment and Watson cannot seem to expunge it from his heart. Notes: congrats, you've made it to the end!! so now i must confess that it's been a loooong time since i've read this fic, but the private note i left on my bookmark was just "holy shit", so i'm sure it's a banger. i'm also sure it has angst because i love angst and i love bookmarking angst so i can read it again and again and suffer infinitely. enjoy :)

“I crawled into every corner of my imagination to find out what made [Holmes]. I have this whole history of him as a child which I used to fill this chasm—to find out what he’s made of. He’s very private. To help to discover what he’s like inside I had this whole story of his life. He was tied very tight as a child in the cot as they used to do in those days to keep them quiet. Children were seen but not heard—especially in the Holmes household which I’ve always placed in my mind in Cornwall … very remote. A bleak house. Never knew his father at all until he was 21. Saw him but never spoke to him. He had an elder brother who was fat and a little bit far ahead of him. They didn’t have much in common either. They were kissed by their mother on her way down to dinner, but that’s all. Typical Victorian upbringing. I think that he had more in common with his mother—she was the brains—but, of course, women were not allowed to say much in those days and this reserve rubbed off on Sherlock. His father was a fat, ex-army toad, I think. Anyway, he escaped to Eton— or one of the major public schools. He was a spidery person, with no colour in his face, no friends—scared of friendship—but brilliant at certain subjects. Brilliant at fencing and boxing, but always the person who walked away from personal encounters. He was devastatingly unattractive: white as a sheet, spotty probably, with all the complications of puberty and no one there to guide him through it. Probably loved singing and joined the choir. University. I would plump for Oxford. Oxford id darker. Cambridge is too full of light. Then brilliance—growing—mind developing—debating societies. Probably saw a girl—a woman, whom he fancied, but she didn’t see him. That one rejection did it. The one time he placed himself in a vulnerable situation and to see her turn away and choose someone else snapped the door shut like a steel trap, never to be opened again. What should he do now? Return home to his family and take up some dreary duties associated with the estate. He wanted to escape that, Mycroft, ahead of him, had escaped: he’d waddled out of university to get a junior post in the current government. Mycroft also joined a club only a Holmes would join—one in which no one spoke. Sherlock, isolated as he was now, forced himself to find his own way—his own job—and therefore become himself.”

If I wrote a modern day Holmes adaptation I’d include a scene were Watson was like “Holmes, it’s four o’clock in the afternoon, it’s too early to go to bed” and Holmes would pop out from beneath his duvet and say “who decided four o’clock was too early? Capitalists, and I oppose capitalism." then he would turn his lamp off and fall asleep.

writing a garbage essay feels like you’re the cow who gave birth to the two headed calf. in the morning, my professor will wrap him in newspaper and dissect him on a cold operating table. but here he is alive, under the pale glow of my computer screen. he is beautiful. there are twice as many logical fallacies as usual.

The Answer to a Question by A_Candle_For_Sherlock, T, 22k: These are the stories behind the story we know: what really happened to Watson’s marriage, and what made him follow Holmes to Reichenbach; what secrets were hidden in the mountains, and what a dead man wrote to the man he left behind.

The Disappearance of John Watson by CCNSurvivor, T, 22k, angst with a happy ending: Returning to London after the hiatus, Holmes is eager to share with Watson what truly transpired in Switzerland. But Watson has fled the city, driven out by the grief for his friend and companion, as well as the recent loss of his wife. Now it is up to Holmes to chase after him, following what little clues a series of letters provide.

The Old Pawnbroker by mightymads, M, 18k, established relationship, hurt/comfort: When a concise telegram arrived to Baker Street, Watson took Holmes along to dispel Holmes’s ennui and distract him from cocaine. Such was the beginning of the case which made the doctor remember things he’d rather forget.

To Join These Men in Holy Matrimony by A_Candle_For_Sherlock, 10k, established relationship: “Sherlock Holmes is a contradiction, an enigma, a force; at once the most generous spirit and the most self-contained man I have ever known. I’ve known more of him, I think, than anyone on earth. Yet for years I’d learned nothing about his boyhood, nor his fears, nor his future hopes, nor his father’s name. I never felt it as a lack until I knew he loved me.”

Arte Regendus by Violsva, series, 9 works, 60k: A series of stories about relationships and mysteries and secrets and people being in love and people talking to each other and people not talking to each other and people hurting each other without intending to and people working as hard as they can to not hurt each other. It has sex and drugs and angst and romance and adventure and interior monologues and case solving and pretentious classical references. It covers 1881 to 1894 in ACD canon.

Missing Pages by PlaidAdder, series, 22 works, T, 78k: a group of interlinked short stories which tell the story of how Holmes and Watson really came to be separated at the Reichenbach Falls, and how they found each other again. Each story is in the form of a document, which tells us something about that story that was changed or suppressed in Watson’s published account of it.

Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Invisible Prism by CCNSurvivor, T, 56k, case fic, post Reichenbach: “In the year 1895, however, it so happened that Holmes and I became involved in not one but two cases of blackmail; the latter of which has never been spoken of since, for it was fraught with a danger which threatened the illusion of normalcy we had so desperately carved out of the ruins of our relationship since his return from the Reichenbach Falls a year prior. And yet it was of that case I often found myself thinking, as it carried some personal significance to both Holmes and myself and drastically changed our lives.”

Do you think later in the series that Alastor might start to care about Charlie and the rest of the crew?

I hope so, Anon... I certainly hope so...

Somewhere on my blog, I have a couple longer posts about Alastor and how he might become attached to the crew over time, but the tags are being evil so we’re gonna talk about it again!

Alastor so far has been portrayed as someone who doesn’t care about others and only sees them as toys. However, there are exceptions to this and lines that he won’t cross - as seen in the comic and his mentioned moral code that I believe comes from the streams. His most evident exceptions are Rosie and Mimzy, and while I think it’s only been confirmed that he knew Mimzy while alive, I think the chances are pretty high that he also knew Rosie.

Besides Rosie and Mimzy, there are Husk and Niffty, and while he might not be as close to them, they do show a lot of familiarity with each other and I don’t think he’d appreciate any permanent harm coming to either of them.

I’ve mentioned before that I headcanon Alastor as someone who has a general distate for humanity, seeing as he likely faced persecution and discrimination while alive and now is in Hell, punishment for the “nonexistent humanity” of sinners in life, etc. The way he hunted while alive and serial killing somewhat reflects that - never stalked or chased his prey, never harmed a child, never got close to his victims - and indiscriminately slaughtered those others whenever he was bored or hungry or whatever.

So what makes those exceptions different from the masses he targeted? Familiarity. He got to know them, and they became more than nameless bodies among the masses that he distains. They became real, and while I’m sure he still takes enjoyment in their minor suffering (Husk especially), I think he would be furious at anyone who ever truly hurt them, including himself.

So, to get back to the original question... I think it’s possible. I want it to happen. I desperately want it to happen.

I want Alastor living in the hotel, having his merry time watching the struggling and suffering of its inhabitants, not even noticing when he starts remembering how Vagatha takes her coffee or noting Angel Dust’s grimaces and stiffness after meetings with Valentino or how Charlie’s eyes catch on the portraits of her family and for a moment she’ll suddenly seem sad, slumped and despairing, before that bright grin is plastered back on.

I want him setting up conflicts and troubles for the crew, not noticing how they become less and less dangerous and more and more simply annoying pranks while Husk and Niffty share knowing glances.

I want him living in the Hazbin Hotel and one day turning around, seeing Vaggie sipping from the cup he handed her without even hesitating or checking it for poison, seeing Husk and Niffty grumbling and buzzing around respectfully while they wait for the jambalaya to be ready, sees Charlie dancing about with the other residents trying to encourage them while Angel Dust plays with Fat Nuggets and occasionally peeks over at the still-resting dough for tonight’s beignets and think, “Oh. Oh.”

I doubt the show will ever reach that level of depth or domesticity, behind the scenes acknowledgement or on camera, but I do think the same slow and stuttering slide into him actually acknowledging and caring about them is possible. I would go so far as to say that the chances are high, but maybe that’s just me hoping.
