She playfully shoves Gilbert’s leg with her foot before stretching out again, sighing extra loud for Gilbert’s benefit. “It is a comfortable sofa. And I have a comfortable brother.”
“And if that brother cannot pester me over the phone, then he is not so much of a nuisance as he perhaps hoped.”
“Glad my lap is good for something,” He snarks lightly in return, pinching the back of Lilli’s leg before turning to lay on the sofa himself, opposite the way of his sister while shoving his socked feet under her back. “I am quite squishy these days, you’re not... Wrong.”
“How insulting, I’ll have you know I can be a proper pest but I didn’t want to bother you on your vacation.” Aw, look. Gilbert has a heart!

“Mmm, at least you were away at war for the one that came after. I would have rather faced the front. It would have been less catastrophic than dealing with her. Do you know she would fine me for participating in small talk? That’s all court life is! Small talk and gossip! I am convinced it was because Roddli never paid her enough and she wanted to extort a reasonable salary.” The more Lilli talks, the more she sinks into the cushions beneath her. If she could fuse with the couch, she would.
“How could you miss me? Häh? We have been talking on the phone nearly every day.”
“Maybe we should have traded places. Sent your governess into a war while I got to teach you about... er. Sewing and petticoats.” That’s what governesses did, right? Besides complaining about having to love and work in a fanciful palace and eat from the best the Austrians had to offer. Honestly, they should have been so lucky. “Are you trying to become one with my sofa? I understand, it is quite the napping place.”
Gil pouts at his sister for just a moment. “Come, you know it is not the same. I cannot hope to pester you properly on the phone.”

“Can a lady not be fashionably late once in a while?” Lilli sighs and wastes no time in immediately making herself a pest. She sits down next to Gilbert and immediately stretches her legs out over his lap.
“Besides, dinner is not yet here, yes? I am missing nothing.”
“Ladies are never late,” Gil mocks, reminiscent of an old governess that they both detested. He pats a hand over her stocking-clad calves, pinching the fabric lightly between his fingers. “You know, her voice grates on me to this day.”
“You are missing my amazing company! Hello! You’ve been so busy lately. Am I not allowed to miss you? Hm?”
