That's All Folks...
The opening shot from my final Looney Tunes Cartoons short, "Moody At The Movies."
I tried to go all out on this one knowing it was to be my last assignment.
I based the theater design on the beautiful "El Portal" in North Hollywood where I first lived after arriving in Los Angeles full of animation dreams.
I also went deeper than ever with a couple of easter eggs for this one - let me know in the comments if you can spot them all.
Directed by: @pittengerkenny Storyboards by: @awdtwit Art Direction: @aaron.spurgeon
I can't wrap up this post without thanking @pbgardt @alexkirtoon Aaron Spurgeon & @kiki_lemon_punch for their incomparable leadership, support and above all trust in me to fully realize this truly once in a lifetime opportunity.
Being given the chance to create 1,000 minutes of new shorts that could stand side by side with the characters & world created by legendary, iconic animation heroes was daunting but incredibly rewarding. I can hardly believe I was generally just given nothing more than the directive to look over the amazing storyboards and come back in 3 weeks with all of the 20+ key backgrounds needed to complete a Looney Tunes short. No check-ins, no lengthy handout meetings with loads of reference, no nitpicked weekly notes sessions. Just good old fashioned trust and support from everyone involved top to bottom.
None of the work from these shorts that I have joyfully shared over the years would have been possible without the entire team trusting and believing in me.
If we ever get another 1,000 minutes - I'll be right over. (after I make a left turn at Albuquerque.
In the meantime myself and the Looney Tunes Cartoons team have been hard at work in recent years crafting a completely original Looney Tunes movie that I think will totally blow people away.

One more background from the Looney Tunes Cartoons short, "Tweet Suite" featuring the cat gang hangout.
Always love designing a good old-fashioned beat to hell trashcan & no one did those better than Paul Julian.
Study the Masters.

Happy Friday!
Here's another of my background designs from the recently released Looney Tunes Cartoons short, "Tweet Suite."
Trying to figure out how to design a good looking marble texture that could also be easily painted was a fun challenge for this short.
Luckily I had some amazing reference from the classic Freleng short "Room and Bird" from 1951 with gorgeous paintings from the legend Paul Julian to assist with the reverse digital engineering.

Catch you all next week with more backgrounds to share from this one.

A couple of Preliminary design roughs for the Crystal Cove Historical Society location in #Velma
As always, tried to drop in a couple nods to the classic Scooby era in this location.
If I recall correctly, in the final bg design we even added in some portraits of classic Scooby guest stars such as Don Knotts, Sonny & Cher and Phyllis Diller as framed portraits on the wall?

Crystal Cove High School - Band Room pre-design for a recent episode of聽#velma
It鈥檚 funny how most high schools are a sort of shared language visually regardless of where in the country you grew up. When doing pre-design for the numerous high school interiors I always tried to blend my own visual memories of high school locations in the New England with those of Southern California - many of which were also used in some of your favorite movies over the years.
Even when you feel like you have a thorough knowledge of what everyday design elements look like so always strongly encourage not skipping photo ref as there is always some small finer details you will all too often overlook. Those are the dash of spice that typically makes your design really sing.

Gigi's Family Cabin Pre-design from a recent episode of #Velma
The double bearskin rugs idea came from the script outline and asked for "a bearskin rug mounting another bearskin rug."
When they ask - you gotta deliver!

More old friends I have missed hanging out with the past few years.
Initial character designs from an original adult animated series with a more Britcom feel that I developed and pitched to Cartoon Network several years back.
This one is always simmering somewhere in the dark recesses of my brain and I have a good idea on how to take this in a new, simpler direction and maybe even just self-produce it on a smaller scale.

Oh the things you find when clearing old hard drives!
Here's some super rough early character design suggestions for Star Trek: Lower Decks from several years back that I just unearthed.
Big thanks to Katie Krentz for giving me a shot to stretch those character design muscles!
While it's not what I'm typically known for, I always find taking a crack at character design a fun and exciting change of pace from the usual bg design and paint work I am known for.

Two quick ones from Fog Fest.
Once your team is locked in and killing it, I find it's best as the leader to take a step back and let them really have all the fun on new, more interesting location designs.
What a pleasure it is to see your team shine! Big BIG thank you to the BG squad:
@patmarconettart
@hc.marked
@shellythings
@tiffanywei
@joeymcc
@automeruz
and art director @venturaexit
I couldn't have asked for a better team here. 馃檹
Happy Friday!

Here's an example of why it's typically not best to go too hard on a pre-design.
The script called for a ravine where the Mystery Inc gang is trapped under a boulder for most of the episode. Awesome - this whole episodes gonna be a BREEZE, right? Not so fast young one.
As you can see in the first two slides, I did several pieces and took them pretty far since they came together rather quickly. I like them for what they are mostly, and sure as hell looks like a ravine with a pile of boulders our gang can be trapped under. In a broad view at least.
Well Slide three shows you what this location looked like in the final episode. Pretty different. But works well for the storytelling.
It's often hard to know where a design will ultimately need to land, so in my opinion less is usually best for pre-design until you have a semi-clear idea as to where things might be headed.

Happy Wednesday - Here's a few more pre-design Bg's for #Velma
1: Crystal Cove State Prison: I prob went way too far with this one for a Pre-Design. Especially considering very often scripts are over time or need re-tooling and whole scenes and locations get left on the cutting room floor. Makes a halfway decent portfolio piece though :)
2: Spooners Int: This was my second ever assignment. What a doozy to try and encapsulate this whole location into one piece. Even within a longer pan. The vibe was supposed to be similar to iconic local spots such as Bob's Big Boy in Burbank and Dinah's Family Restaurant in Los Angeles.
3: Velma's living room: The "final" final rough line drawing for one of the most important, most visited locations in the entire series. Went on quite a journey to get here and was later made extra awesome by Shelly Liu (Design) and Kati Prescott (Paint). (If I recall correctly)
