Warning: Major Character Death
Dazai is dead.
Deep down, Chuuya always knew Dazai would die first.
What he hadn't expected was to only learn about it weeks later.
Dazai is dead.
Chuuya barely remembers the phone call informing him about the death of his former partner. Kouyou had said more, but all he hears is:
"Dazai is dead."
Logically, this shouldn't affect Chuuya at all. Besides, perhaps, for the fact that it wasn't himself that killed Dazai.
Dazai is dead.
He swallows and looks at his hand, still holding the crushed phone. It's trembling. Why is it trembling?
Dazai is dead.
Gone.
Forever.
Chuuya doesn't cry. Rarely ever has.
He is flying. High, high above the city. The city he and Dazai grew up in. The city they both worked to protect for so many years.
Rain soaks through his clothes, into his skin.
Chuuya doesn't cry.
He screams until his throat is raw, and then he screams some more.
He feels cold, so cold, but not from the rain.
He wants to punch someone. But that someone isn't here anymore.
Chuuya didn't even get the chance to attend the funeral.
Dazai is dead, and Chuuya was left behind once more.

Hi, maybe anger as a prompt for chuuya or soukoku? (Btw, I loved your previous pieces)
Thank you, Anon! Sorry, this took so long, and it’s also rather short. I wanted to write this out for a while though, so I took the chance haha I hope you like it!
Prompt: Anger
Chuuya has two types of anger. The first one is cold, serious. The people who cause it are likely to be crushed. The second one is rarer. It burns hot and loud, expressed in shouts and annoyance. It's more immature. (It's also more fun.) Not much will cause it. In fact, it usually only concerns one person.
Chuuya is aware of this. He doesn't need anyone to point out that he's acting differently when he's pissed off because of Dazai. He's also aware that Dazai is similar in that respect. He's annoying with Chuuya, pushing his buttons, taking stabs at Chuuya's choices and appearances. He's not pleasant like he is with Oda and Ango. But he's also not as cruel as he is with others, notably Akutagawa.
Chuuya keeps his observations to himself. They work well as partners, no matter how much they complain about each other. And to be honest, he kind of enjoys bickering with Dazai. It's a complete change of pace, being allowed to be immature, to blow up at someone. He suspects that it's similar for Dazai. Perhaps even more for him than for Chuuya.
So, they continue like they always have. Fighting, yelling, bickering, and when it comes to it, they have each others' backs, trusting one another. They're partners after all.

Now on Ao3!
(I love your writing!) Since I’m feeling whumpy, for the Dazai x Chuuya prompt-
Surgery
Ahh, thank you, Anon! I hope you like it :)
Prompt: Surgery
Chuuya is not pacing because he's worried, thank you very much. He's pacing because he is furious.
Because of Dazai, of course. That asshole managed to get himself shot and who did the hospital call? Not his friends at the Agency, that's for sure.
Chuuya flexes his hands that have spent the past hour curled into fists. The pitying looks he's shot by both staff and visitors do absolutely nothing to improve his mood. He's not fucking worried, damn it. He's just here to demand an explanation from Dazai and maybe choke him a little. The asshole deserves it.
A nurse approaches him with a kind smile. "The surgery was successful. You can see him now."
Chuuya is tempted to just turn around and leave. Instead, he presses out a "Thank you," and follows her. This isn't her fault, after all.
Dazai looks unusually small in the hospital bed. He's hooked up to some monitors and devices Chuuya doesn't care enough about to spare more than a passing glance.
The nurse gives him another smile before leaving the room. Chuuya waits until the door is closed. He steps up to the side of the bed, staring down at Dazai. He's breathing regularly.
Chuuya very lightly kicks against the bed. "Hey asshole, you awake yet?"
No reaction, of course.
Chuuya takes one of the chairs in the room and pulls it over to the bed. "When you feel like talking, care to explain why the fuck I'm your emergency contact?" He sits down, crosses his arms and waits.
Surprisingly, he doesn't have to wait long. Dazai frowns slightly before opening his eyes. He's not looking at Chuuya, instead opting to stare at the ceiling. "We set them together, remember?", he asks, voice quiet. "Am I not yours?"
Chuuya huffs. "No. I changed it to Ane-san after you left. What the hell do you think?"
"Hm," Dazai says, still not looking at him. "I suppose that makes sense."
They stay silent for a while. Until suddenly, Dazai snaps his head around, staring at Chuuya. "You still came."
Chuuya glares at him. "What else was I supposed to fucking do?"
Dazai looks painfully earnest as he answers: "You could have ignored the call."
Chuuya kicks the bed again, careful not to alert any of the machines. "Yeah sure, as if."
Dazai blinks. Chuuya sighs.
He leans forward, reaching for Dazai's wrist. "You're such a fucking idiot." He gently presses two fingers down, feeling Dazai's pulse even through the bandages. "I told you before. If anyone's going to kill you, it'll be me. So stop being so stupid."
Dazai's lips twist into a smile before that turns into a chuckle. He stops soon enough, making a face. "Oh, that hurts." Chuuya rolls his eyes. "You deserve that." Dazai blinks again, considering. "Perhaps." He turns to smile at Chuuya again. "Thanks for showing up." Chuuya looks away. "Sure. Now shut up."
They both ignore it when his hand on Dazai's wrist lowers, taking hold of his partner's hand. They also ignore it when Dazai gives them a little squeeze. They've gotten very good at ignoring things like that over the years.

Hello! I love your writing!
Can I ask black holes or gravity as a prompt for soukoku?
Thanks!
Hello and thank you! Here you go, I hope you enjoy it <3
Prompt: Black Holes
Dazai is sitting on the couch, book in hand. He's in the apartment he and Chuuya temporarily occupy until they can return from their mission. "What're you doing?" Chuuya asks, leaning over the back of the couch, still drying his hair with a towel. Dazai had showered before him.
"Research," he answers, pretending to be distracted and not looking at his partner.
"About?" Chuuya prompts, dropping down on the other end of the couch, the towel now loosely hanging around his shoulders. Dazai is considerate enough to make space.
"Your ability."Chuuya raises an eyebrow and looks at him expectantly. Dazai gives in. "Do you know how black holes work?""Never thought about it," Chuuya shrugs.Dazai sighs dramatically. Chuuya kicks his leg lightly, rolling his eyes. "Spit it out, smartass.""Fine," Dazai answers, dragging the word out. "I'll keep it simple for you." Chuuya kicks him again, causing Dazai to smirk."Basically, they're a place in space-""Was that intentional?" Chuuya interrupts, childishly referring to the rhyme. This time, Dazai kicks at him. "No. Shut up, or I won't tell you anything."Chuuya huffs but keeps silent."As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted: They're a place where the gravity is so strong that nothing can escape, not even light.""Okay, so what you're saying is that I could theoretically create them if my ability is strong enough?""Something like that.""What else is in that book of yours?"Dazai hesitates a moment. "I haven't actually read all that far yet."Chuuya shrugs. "Read out loud, then."Dazai watches as his partner gets more comfortable, propping his head up with a pillow. He sighs. "Fine. But try to actually keep up. I don't want to repeat myself all the time."Chuuya waves him off. "Yeah, yeah. Just read."Dazai does.Chuuya falls asleep after listening for almost an hour. Dazai's throat is dry by now. He sighs and closes the book. Might as well go to bed.On the way, he picks up a blanket and throws it over his partner, careful not to wake him up. At least he'll have the bedroom to himself.

Hi I could think of more prompts and I couldn't choose one so I hope you don't mind I sent more. Feel free to use any of them or all of them if you like.
graveyard
I didn't expect this
hair dye
knife
bandages
Hi! I did this a bit differently and basically wrote about one paragraph for each one. If you want something a bit longer feel free to send them in again as a single prompt :) I hope you enjoy them!
Prompt: Graveyard
"Oh," Atsushi says, leaving the graveyard. "Are you waiting for Dazai-san?" Chuuya frowns at him from where he's leaning against his car. "What makes you say that?" "Well, Dazai-san is visiting that grave again. And you look like your waiting for someone." Chuuya shrugs. "Fair enough."
Prompt: I didn't expect this
"Huh. I didn't expect this." Dazai's office is decked out in brightly coloured decoration. There are balloons and paper garlands and confetti. Chuuya comes up behind him, avoiding his eyes. "Happy birthday, I guess."
Prompt: Hair Dye
"What-" Atsushi really tries to hold back his laughter. He fails. "What happened to you?" Akutagawa glares at him. The murderous intent is somewhat undermined by the formerly white tips of his hair now sporting a flashing blue. "That," he growls, a slight pink tinge to his face, "is none of your business."
Prompt: Knife
"Stop stealing my fucking knife!" Chuuya yells. "Get your own!" Dazai laughs as he runs away from his partner, said knife in his hand. "But this is far more convenient! Why should I bother carrying one around when you already do?" "I'll give you convenient. Get back here, you asshole!" Dazai laughs.
Prompt: Bandages
"Hold still for fucks sake," Chuuya grumbles, wrapping the bandage around his partner's arm. Dazai lets him, staring into the distance. Having secured the end, Chuuya leans back with a sigh. "You're such a fucking idiot. Stop getting yourself hurt. You're just wasting bandages."

Hi, I really like your writing. What about hat as a prompt?
Thank you, Anon! I hope you like it <3
Prompt: Hat
People are avoiding Chuuya today. Everyone that sees his expression turns tail and flees. He's not surprised by that.
Oh, Chuuya is in a bad mood, alright. The reason is easy to spot. Or rather, its absence is.
He's not wearing his hat.
Because someone decided to steal it. That someone knew exactly what he was doing. He knew that Chuuya has a meeting he has to attend, with or without his hat. That someone is going to regret this as soon as Chuuya is done.
After an agonizing two hours in which Chuuya does his absolute best to remain polite, the meeting is finally over. He doesn't linger long.
Chuuya excuses himself, leaves the building and lights a cigarette. He checks his phone, frowning when he has three new texts.
Mackerel: I'm keeping your ugly hat hostage
Mackerel: Make me dinner, and you'll get it back
Mackerel: It has to taste good
Chuuya growls, crushing his cigarette distractedly. This fucking asshole.
Chuuya could just walk into the Detective Agency and demand his hat back. But chances are, Dazai either doesn't have it with him or he's going to make the whole ordeal embarrassing as hell.
It's probably less painful to just go with his demands. Besides, Chuuya knows Dazai's eating habits. The idiot probably hasn't had an actual dinner in ages.
So he answers.
Fuck you.
Fine.
But I'm not using your kitchen.
Barely a minute passes before he gets a reply.
Mackerel: Great! I'll be at your place after work :D
Chuuya squints at the smiley suspiciously. He's going to kick Dazai right out if he pulls any other shit at dinner.
With a sigh, Chuuya returns back to work. He'll have to leave early to buy some ingredients and still have enough time to cook before Dazai shows up. As long as he gets his hat back.

Prompt: worship with soukoku :D
Thanks for the prompt! I hope you like it :)
Prompt: Worship
Dazai isn't a spiritual person, that much Atsushi knows. He doesn't think there are gods or spirits out there to either help or hurt humanity. He's never been to a place of worship if it wasn't work-related. He denies being religious in any way. Still, if someone asks if he believes in something he'll answer with an unreadable smile: "I only know one god." When asked for clarification, he tells them to guess. No one has guessed right.
Atsushi isn't sure how the topic has come up again. Especially at a time like this. They just got done with another round of negotiations with the Port Mafia, concerning an extension of their alliance. The formal part is over, and the two organisations cautiously mingle together.
Atsushi didn't hear who asked the question, but he hears the familiar answer: "I only know one god." Before anyone can ask more, however, something different happens. "Fuck off!" Nakahara Chuuya has snapped around, glaring at Dazai. The latter's smile turns from unreadable to mischievous.
Dazai wanders over to the executive, abandoning whoever he was just talking to. He says something quiet enough that no one else hears, causing his former partner to kick him. Or at least try to. Dazai jumps back just in time, laughing.
Atsushi watches them for a while. He concludes that this is probably whatever their equivalent to an inside joke is. Neither of them seems particularly serious while exchanging threats. And no one else seems bothered by it either. People just avoid getting too close and carry on. Atsushi shrugs and does the same. As much as Dazai complains about his former partner, he doesn't seem to mind interacting with him. In fact, he sought this out. He could have just ignored the interruption. Somehow, Atsushi doubts that these two hate each other as much as they claim.

Horror movie as a prompt?
Thank you for letting me hardcore project onto Chuuya this time haha
Prompt: Horror Movie
Chuuya regrets every single choice that has led him to this moment. Starting with ever having met Dazai. Which, to be fair, he regularly regrets. He knows he shouldn't have given in. He knew Dazai was manipulating him! Doesn't change the fact that he still fell for it. Which is why he's currently sitting curled up on the couch in his apartment, facing the tv and holding on to a pillow for dear life. Because of his own stupid pride and need to prove himself. And Dazai is living for it. He keeps looking at him, not even bothering to hide his grin. Chuuya is going to kill him once this is finally fucking over.
Chuuya isn't easy to scare. He's confident in his ability to deal with any potential threat. This is different. This is a stupid fucking horror movie. He can't just attack the monsters because they're not even real. So why the hell can he barely keep his eyes on the screen?
"If you just admit you're scared-" "Shut up!" Chuuya snaps not for the first time. Like hell, he's going to admit anything. There is only like an hour left of this shitty movie. He can deal with it.
Chuuya can not deal with it. At a particularly scary scene, he jumps up with a curse. Dazai just looks at him, amused. "I need to go to the bathroom." Dazai grins. "No problem, we can just pause until you're back." "Uh," Chuuya says, "you don't need to. I don't mind missing something." Of course, Dazai shakes his head. "No, no, I'll wait until you're back." Chuuya bites back another curse and accepts his fate. At least the few minutes in the brightly lit bathroom are a welcome relief from the dark living room. He might take a little more time than strictly necessary. Of course, not enough to make it seem like he doesn't want to return. Chuuya sighs after he's finished thoroughly drying his hands. Time to go back.
As promised, Dazai has paused the movie and is waiting exactly as Chuuya left him. Chuuya takes another quick detour, getting the still-hot water kettle from the stove and refilling their tea. Finally, when he's run out of excuses, he settles back down on his side of the couch.
Dazai unpauses the movie, and the psychological torture continues. Both of the characters on screen and Chuuya. He has returned the pillow from before to his chest, curling around it as he forces himself to keep watching.
At some point, Chuuya manages to zone out. Not enough to ignore everything, he still startles from time to time, but enough to get to the end of the movie.
Dazai lets out an audible yawn, stretching his arms above his head. "Well, that was fun." Chuuya carefully uncurls himself. He feels stiff from keeping still for such a long time. "Sure," he mumbles, reaching for his already cold tea.
"We should do this more often." Chuuya knows Dazai is taunting him. He shoots him a glare. "No, thanks." Dazai grins and scoots closer on the couch. "Why not? You're not telling me you were scared, are you?" "Fuck off." Chuuya stares at his tea. He's not looking forward to trying to sleep tonight. It's already been weird getting used to sleeping on his own. He never had to do that while with the Sheep.
Dazai is looking at him, he realises. Chuuya huffs and drains his tea before getting up. Dazai follows, letting out another yawn. "You know, it's gotten quite late. Do you mind if I crash here?" "Whatever." Chuuya shrugs. This is far from the first time they stayed the night at each others place.
He is a bit surprised though when Dazai follows him to the bedroom. "What are you doing?" Dazai shrugs. "Your couch is really uncomfortable. And it's not like your bed is too small for two." Chuuya doesn't think his couch is that uncomfortable. Though Dazai had complained about it before. He sighs. "Fine. But if you hog the blanket, I'll kick you out." "Understood," Dazai replies cheerfully already heading to the drawer where his spare clothes are stored.
The night isn't as bad as Chuuya had feared. Dazai is the first to fall asleep, though Chuuya soon follows after his partner unconsciously throws an arm over his side. There are no nightmares.

Hi, what about a beach as a prompt?
Hi! Thanks for the prompt, I hope you like it <3
Prompt: Beach
For once, Dazai isn't lying when he claims that he has no idea how it happened.
The it in question is the fact that he's standing on a beach, together with the rest of the Armed Detective Agency. Who by all accounts are a professional and dangerous organisation. Alright, perhaps that sounds more like the Port Mafia than the ADA.
Which brings him to his next point: The Port Mafia apparently also has decided to go to the beach. The same one the Agency has just arrived at. At the same time. Resulting in the two organisations now standing at a beach, dressed inbeach clothing, and staring at each other.
Dazai wants to kill himself. More than usual.
His only saving grace is the fact that the president is also here and Dazai doesn't actually have to talk to Mori himself.
He realises that he's zoned out when the two men shake hands. A sight that almost makes Dazai feel physically ill.
A truce is called. No one is allowed to fight while they're at the beach. Something that sounds like it's meant specifically for Atsushi and Akutagawa who have still not stopped glaring at each other.
The two organisations split off, trying to to keep a healthy distance between each other. Dazai chooses the spot furthest away from the mafia members. He's glad to have brought his book. Though it doesn't provide as much distraction as he'd like. He keeps glancing away from it, surveying his surroundings. Keeping an eye on the Port Mafia, who seemingly don't care at all about the Agency's presence.
Except for Akutagawa. Who is currently being babysat by Chuuya.
Chuuya also keeps looking at the Detective Agency. Though luckily, trying to keep Akutagawa from ignoring the boss' orders and attacking the tiger boy is sufficiently distracting. That is until said tiger boy gets thrown directly into Akutagawa by the overenthusiastic farm boy.
Chuuya screams internally. He had almost gotten them out of range. Almost.
"It was an accident!" The tiger boy tries to explain.
Akutagawa is having none of it. "You attacked me," he growls, and Chuuya is so glad he got him to wear something appropriate for the beach. All Akutagawa has to use for Rashomon is the short-sleeved shirt he's wearing. Which he isn't willing to do just yet.
"Now, Atsushi-kun, are you really going against the president's orders?"
"Dazai-san!" comes the alarmed reaction from both boys, though one of them sounds a lot more reverent than the other.
Chuuya rolls his eyes. "Nice to see you getting off your ass for once."
"Did you finally get rid of that ugly hat?" Dazai asks, but he's not looking at him. Chuuya frowns. The taunt is... hollow.
He watches as Dazai chastises both Akutagawa and the tiger boy with what probably counts as an indulgent smile to them. Chuuya knows better. Dazai looks empty. Like all life has left his eyes.
It's far from the first time Chuuya has seen this. And he knows what this usually leads to without intervention. So he makes his choice.
He waits until the other two split apart, returning to their respective sides of the beach. Then, Chuuya grabs Dazai's wrist and pulls him forward, away from the beach. Away from the rest of the Port Mafia.
It startles Dazai enough to get a genuine reaction out of him. "Huh? What-"
"Shut up." Chuuya doesn't look at him. "Come on."
He continues pulling until Dazai falls into step.
"Um," Atsushi says, having returned to the rest of the Agency members. "Shouldn't we do something about that?" He gestures towards his mentor being dragged off by the mafia executive.
"Eh," Ranpo says, adding another popsicle stick to the small pile next to him. "They'll be fine."
They don't return until almost everyone has already packed up.
Chuuya is yelling at Dazai. And Dazai's eyes aren't as empty anymore when he taunts the redhead.

I’m living for Chuuya and Dazai tbh, so uh, prompt for them, and since I’m still feeling whumpy...Fever 💙💙(I loved the first piece! It was amazing!)
I'm glad you liked the last one! Also, uh, not to self-promote, but have you checked out my whumptober fics? They vary a bit in quality tbh, but if you haven't they might scratch that whumpy itch? They're all tagged with #whumptober2020
Anyway, thanks for sending in another prompt! I hope you like it <3
Prompt: Fever
Chuuya doesn't get sick. That is something he prides himself on if he's being honest. If the other kids at the Sheep caught something, he didn't. Even Dazai has gotten more than one cold since Chuuya joined the Port Mafia.
All this is to say, Chuuya might not be the best at realising the signs of being sick.
The day had started with a headache. Now, to be fair, Chuuya had expected that. He stayed up late to finish a few reports and before he knew it, the night was almost over. So he attributed the headache to the lack of sleep.
He did the same with the chills. After all, it's not uncommon to feel a bit cold when you're tired.
Alright, to be frank, Chuuya thought that every single one of his symptoms could be blamed on the lack of sleep. Including the fact that he forgot to eat breakfast or that he looked a bit paler than usual while looking in the mirror.
Chuuya keeps rubbing his eyes as he tries to concentrate on his work. Dazai shoots him another look. He has lost count of how many it has been. Chuuya can't muster the energy to be annoyed. He takes another sip of water before returning to the task at hand.
Chuuya startles when Dazai suddenly appears next to him. He startles even more when his partner presses a cold hand to his forehead.
Chuuya jerks back, glaring up at Dazai. "What the hell are you-"
"You have a fever," Dazai interrupts him, sounding way too smug for what he just said.
"What?" Chuuya frowns. "No, I don't. I never get sick."
"Yes, you do," Dazai grins, "You very clearly have a fever."
Chuuya's frown deepens as he recounts the past few hours. Perhaps the headache, and the chills, and the general feeling-like-shit thing wasn't just due to the lack of sleep. But accepting that would include admitting that Dazai is right. Which is something Chuuya hates deeply, and coincidentally has to do way too often.
"No, I don't," he grumbles instead and tries to turn back to his work.
Dazai clicks his tongue before his face suddenly lights up. Chuuya does not like that.
"How about I ask Ane-san to come here? See what she has to say about you working while sick. Not to mention the forgotten breakfast."
Chuuya glares at him. How the hell does he even know about that last point?
Dazai grins when Chuuya stays quiet. "That's what I thought. Now get up. You're going home."
Chuuya wants to protest, he really does. But he doesn't have the energy right now. He honestly just wants to sleep and finally feel warm again.
Huh. He hadn't really noticed how draining it was to even just sit here and work.
So for once, Chuuya does what Dazai tells him to do without arguing. He is surprised, however, when his partner follows him out of the room.
"What are you doing?"
"Making sure the chibi actually goes home, of course."
"You just don't want to work," Chuuya grumbles.
"Maybe," Dazai answers cheerfully before throwing an arm around Chuuya's shoulders. Again, Chuuya wants to complain, but it's easier to walk in a straight line like this. So he stays quiet.
Once they reach Chuuya's apartment, Dazai basically sends him straight to bed. It involves more grumbling from Chuuya, but no real complaints.
Dazai heads to his bathroom, where Chuuya keeps his medicine and first aid kit. He returns with a glass of water and two pills in his hand.
Chuuya eyes them sceptically.
Dazai rolls his eyes before holding one up. "Painkiller." He picks up the other one. "To lower the fever."
Chuuya accepts them and swallows them down with the water.
He expects Dazai to leave him alone now, but instead, his partner sits down on the other side of the bed, a book in hand.
"What are you doing?"
"Making sure you actually sleep and don't sneak back to work."
"I wouldn't."
Dazai looks at him.
Chuuya pouts, even if he would deny it later. "Really."
His partner sighs. "Well, excuse me for wanting to be certain."
Chuuya grumbles something and pulls the blanket tighter around him. "Whatever."
As he closes his eyes, he feels Dazai's hand on his head.
Usually, Chuuya would tell him off for petting him. Well, for treating him like a dog. But right now, it feels kinda nice. So Chuuya stays quiet. He blames it on the fever as he falls asleep.
