hi okay I've been dead and gone and buried (haha anyone catch that reference?) but I just finished chain of thorns (the last hours #3 by cassandra clare) and I HAVE THOUGHTS (major CHOT spoilers, here's your only warning)
.
.
.
first of all, I think we can all agree that the love triangle was so unnecessary?? why bother having matthew be in love with cordelia when you could've made them the ultimate pair of bffs, it was so frustrating when cordelia essentially cheated on james? and created so much unneeded conflict between james and matthew when the time could have been used to build up more relationships (KITGRACE ARE ADORABLE EXCUSE ME)
2, kit's death - admittedly I was spoiled when it came to this (damn you, twitter user who didn't tag chot spoilers!) so I wasn't really emotionally affected, but kit's character was going so well and him and grace? idk I'll die with this ship, plus I'm a grace apologist and she deserved one good thing after all that happened 😭 lowkey wished matthew or even james died instead bc it would've been something completely different since cc doesn't tend to kill of MCs, and it'd be like if will or jem died, much more painful
3, james surviving cortana?? why did it feel so cliche - it felt like city of lost souls when clary stabbed jace with glorious the sword and HOW does this trope feel so reused.. the whole thing where a paladin can heal the blows they make just didn't really cut it for me, I mean I understand it but I don't really see the logic in it hahaha
4, i almost feel like the book is spreading itself too thin, in the sense that we didn't get time to explore anything much, instead just getting brief glimpses of each character before proceeding to another. this has been a bit of a recurring problem for me with tlh, but it felt worse this book since we at 10 (TEN) povs jumping around 💀
overall this book feels like ant man quantamania - had a solid concept and has potential, but wasn't executed the best. maybe a 7ish out of 10? it wasn't BAD per se, some character moments I cherished a lot - like thomstairs, ghostwriter and herondaisy and even anna/ariadne, whom cc lowkey messed up in CHOI, I liked the jokes and how we finally sort of know why belial owes jem a favour, it's been bothering me. the plot was resolved okay, but again, meh execution. okay the dump is complete goodbye

I’m not entirely sure where I’m going with this, but I really want to talk about how the upperclassmen and the monsters mirror each other. How each member of the monsters has a counterpart in the upperclassmen, someone with a similar backstory and similar motivations and goals, but with certain crucial differences that serve to highlight all the character development that happens throughout the books.
For instance, there’s Andrew and Renee: both foster children with harsh pasts who murdered and feel no remorse for it, but forced to face the consequences regardless. Andrew is left with a brother who can’t forgive him; Renee has to deal with the knowledge that she’ll never be the good person she wants to be. They have the same fighting style - defensive, reactive, but knowing that the only way to win is to stop your opponent from ever hurting you again; they both play goalie because they’re both best when they stand at everyone else’s backs and prevent anything from getting past them. There’s a reason Andrew charges Renee with protecting her half of the team, and not Dan, the official leader; where Dan is focused on moving forward and charging down the opposition, Renee and Andrew are about making sure everyone under their wing survives.
Then there’s Dan and Kevin, the team leaders (one official, one unofficial), a striker and an offensive dealer/occasional striker sub, #1 and #2. They’ve both been pushed down and shoved aside, marked as second-best or second-rate, and they both refuse to let that stop them. They both fight because they don’t know how to lose, because they can’t know how to lose, and they expect the same from everybody else. Kevin won’t accept anything but the best because that’s what he’s been taught, that’s the only way he knows how to live; Dan knows that anything less than perfection gives everyone else the right to stomp all over you, and is determined to never let that happen again. (And then there’s the fact that they both see Wymack as a father).

I'm a sucker for sections in books when the narrator says "he/she/they looked entirely relaxed for once, like all of their burdens had been pushed down this once. the afternoon sun shone on the planes of their face, and you only had one thought - that they looked more beautiful than ever."
it's just so sweet, and every book needs one of these scenes - when every strife can be forgotten, even for a little while, and when the characters can let off a little steam and remain in a little bubble, no holds barred.

my brain went off on its own and imagined an AU where henry says ✨no✨ to alex after mr claremont-diaz says "I'll leave when you tell me to leave"
let me just say that my heart is broken but here we go 😭💔
“I’ll leave,” he says, and he turns back and leans in, “as soon as you tell me to leave.”
Henry is still for a few moments, his chest rising and falling steadily, the look on his face not at all what Alex had imagined. He hadn't dared to imagine anything, but he thought Henry would be distraught - upset, at the very least - any emotion at all would be better than the vacant, blank look on his face. He takes in Henry's features - his beautiful eyes and lips and neck and body - hardly breathing.
I love you, he thinks. Henry, I love you.
"No, Alex," Henry says, his voice quiet and gentle, stepping away and touching the ring on his finger. "I can't do this, and I don't want to. So, please, Alex. Leave." Alex feels, rather than sees or hears him exhale, and he feels like his heart is being yanked out by a string, like someone has a fist around it and is determined to crush it till it is nothing but pulp.
Then he feels nothing.
He doesn't remember staggering backwards and gripping one of the pillars of Henry's apartment; he doesn't remember the pain or sadness of the overwhelming heartbreak; he doesn't remember Cash's pitying eyes or Amy's attempts at comfort or Zahra's quiet concern. Of the three, Zahra's gentleness hurt the most - it hurt, physically, that she was being nice. What wouldn't he give for her to call him an asswipe or threaten his privates again, just for a fleeting sense of normalcy.
He doesn't remember the flight back, or the paparazzi shoving microphones in his face. He doesn't remember Nora's fingers pressing gently into his shoulders, cool and steady. He doesn't remember June and his mom and dad circling him like curious wolves before engulfing him in a hug that, in hindsight, he's sure was suffocating. He doesn't remember anything. He doesn't feel anything.
The lack of Henry - not just a physical presence, but the ghost, the shadow, the faint aura of his presence that followed Alex for so long - gone. Every memory and laugh and kiss and touch - gone. Every whisper of Henry's voice in his ear, every gentle utterance of the words "love", "sweetheart" or "baby" - forgotten. And-
everything
just
feels
empty.
Alex later realises, as he crumples up that picture of Henry and deletes their texts and emails, what is missing from him.
It is his heart.
The part that he had surrendered to Henry - the part of him that now belongs to that stubborn, incredible prince he loves - torn from him unintentionally, staying clasped in those nimble, steady hands of the only man he's ever loved so so much.
The bits and pieces of what they once shared come rushing through his mind, and with it, comes the tears.
This time, as he feels them fall down his face, it hurts to know that across the ocean in a lonely, bleak apartment in London, is Henry. He imagines him sitting at his desk, staring blankly at the wall - perfectly fine.
Maybe it didn't hurt at all.
But what if... what if it did?
That, Alex thinks, is what hurts most of all - the thought that Henry loved him, but let him go. For what he thought was the best thing for both of them. He feels his heart splinter again, and he wishes, as he presses his fingers to the key lying on his chest, that they had chosen differently.
DO YOU WANT MORE OF THIS?
anyway, note to self, to reduce the pain:
1. read the actual red white and royal blue again 🍷

somebody asked me why i loved red, white and royal blue so much and here's why:
people who don't like it say its unrealistic, but isn't that the point? rwrb is the ULTIMATE escape, where the basis of the world is the same but everyone in it is so good
when i read it, i feel so hopeful for the goodness in the world because i know that in the real world, a prince who showed even the slightest inclination of being not-straight probably wouldn't even see the light of day, or would be so closeted that he'd never even think for a moment that he's anything but straight
the book makes me happy and cheered and joyful, but most of all, makes me hope that the world can be better - it sparks a flame within me that tells me: "perhaps some day, we can say that we live in a world like that"
so there's that. i LOVE rwrb.

"i remember the first time that we met; and I remember the taste of your first kiss " -elina, remember
born under the same moon
the same skies, the same stars
that may have been fate
perhaps just a lucky chance.
we were friends
we were happy
and it may have been love
but it does one well to recall
that good things never last
some days i thought
that I'd marry him some day
that we would be together
and be each other's forever and always
but with a twist of fate
and a change of wills
we left without each other
without even a farewell
one to the east
the other in the west
and the ship had sailed
never to turn back
we did see each other
many years later
after things had changed
for worse or for better
we talked and laughed
and had a meal
talking about everything
just like how we used to
funny to think
I missed you more
though we hadn't spoken
even once in the years that had gone
when we met
everything was perfect
but it was sad to think
that everything had changed
and no sparking ember remained
from then on
there were no hellos
and no easy smiles
for after that night
nothing was left but goodbye
in spite of all that
never for a moment think
that I wish the worst for you
as I never did
for whenever I think of you
it will be with fondness and joy
and whenever I pray
it is for your luck in the sky
so, wherever you are
whatever you're doing
remember the moments and memories
and just maybe think of me
the days and nights
the games and tears
no matter what happens
just remember the moments
and remember us

sometimes i just sit down and think about how alina and the darkling could've had it all
they could've ruled the world
light and dark
the ultimate yin and yang
alina being the darkling's light
him bringing out her ruthlessness and power
it's just too bad

minor rule of wolves spoilers/major crooked kingdom spoilers
.
.
.
.
you see
I LOVE THE CROWS' GROWTH IN RULE OF WOLVES
kaz literally having international renown pls HAHAHAH he went from a bastard in the barrel to a renowned thief and the wraith being a well known ship on the oceans
kaz and jesper and wylan not needing money but dropping everything to help nikolai anyway bcs it'll benefit inej? PLEASE that's the quality content I'm living for
wylan straight up going "we don't need money" by ghezen
the crow club being a huge enterprise in ketterdam? yes please!
but
while the ending of rule of wolves does present itself as an opportunity for a 3rd crows book, a few things bother me (if the quest turns out to be a huge ice court level difficulty of a heist) :
there's only 4 of them left and it'd be different and they all have a lot more to lose. when they took the ice court job, jesper was in debt, wylan was lost, inej was indentured to per haskell and kaz was a lieutenant - not poor, but not as well off as he is now
now, inej is hunting slavers, wylan and jesper are living the dream domestic life, and kaz is a rly successful businessman/barrel boss PLUS they wouldn't be able to handle losing each other - kaz and inej, wylan and jes
so
as much as I'd like another crows book, I'd be content leaving it where it is and taking zoya's 'job offer' as nothing but a simple job HAHAHAH
that said, i would never say no to more crows content so YAS
i am way overthinking this have a nice day yall

unchanging
when nesryn died, a nation lost its empress. a khagan lost his wife. but chaol, chaol lost his friend. the friend who had seen him through his recovery, his healing. who had never flinched from her duty as captain of the guard, however short a time it was. aelin was with him then, and she mourned, grieved, and healed with him, remembering her as the archer, the fighter, the empress, the warrior.
when chaol died, yrene died too. the two lay in their bed, a strange array of guests surrounding them, including the king of adarlan, the queen of terrasen, and an array of fae warriors. the two went silently, hands clasped to the very end, and aelin remembered the boy she had loathed and the man who was her friend. one of her first friends after leaving endovier, which seemed like eons ago. yet, when she heard his heart stop beating, a part of her went with him. the part of her who loved unguardedly, the part of her who hadn't known better. dorian cried too. he remembered his friend of a century, who trained and sparred and argued with him, but the friend he loved most. he didn't get out of bed for a few days after chaol died, as if he were missing part of his soul. manon almost couldn't stand his sobs, and had to physically refrain from going in and consoling him, or yelling at him for wasting his final days.
she knew. she knew that his days were numbered too.
when yrene died, chaol died too. aelin watched them, side by side, as they took their last breaths and uttered their last words. they looked each other in the eye, and died. aelin remembered the healer who held such hope, such aspiration in her eyes. the healer who saved the world, and she knew, when she saw yrene in innish, that there was still hope. that there would always be hope, as long as you believed in it; as long as you had faith.
when elide died, a part of lorcan died too. he knew she was dying, could hear the god of death whispering in his ear, even after the god had been destroyed by aelin. he knew, as she took a rasping breath, that it would be her last. her last words to him, whispered quietly as her strength faded. "don't lose yourself," she said, caressing his cheek lovingly. rowan and fenrys stayed by his side, but strangely, it was aelin and manon who offered him the most comfort. death brought people together, you see. even people he had betrayed long ago. they all loved elide deeply, and she them. they grieved together, an invisible, untouchable web of sorrow surrounding them.
when dorian died, a part of manon died too. the man she had been indifferent to, the king she had loved with all her heart and soul, if she had one. she remembered the rare, soft moments in the dark, when they whispered quiet taunts and endearments, the nights when one of them woke up thrashing, the other gently soothing the pains and chasing the nightmares away. she let herself curl up in a fetal ball, sobbing, and only straightened when the queen of terrasen approached.
aelin was there when dorian died, having made the journey to adarlan a few days prior. she approached manon and sunk down next to her, tentatively putting her arms around her. manon allowed it. "witches usually grieve alone," manon murmured, even as she heard her voice tremble. aelin rubbed her shoulder. "yes, but friends grieve together." and so, the two queens could be seen together, pacing the grounds of the castle they had once hated, the palace that had been utterly transformed by the king who always tried to do his best for his people. the king who suffered so, so, much. the king who had lived, laughed, and loved.
when lysandra died, a part of aedion died too. the shape shifter he loved, no matter what form she took. he threw himself into court business and training his armies, anything, anything, to stop himself from breaking apart entirely. aelin found him then, and coaxed the tears out of him, staying by his side as they whispered stories about the shape shifter. stories of two young girls in a society of assassins and thieves, stories of a woman who had been tried and tested in war, wearing not just her own face, but aelin's. the woman who had done so much but received so little recognition for it.
at last, when all their mortal friends had died, aelin, rowan, lorcan, fenrys, manon, and aedion stood together on one of the many balconies of the palace in orynth. at last, aelin discovered the sorrow of being immortal, of staying frozen in time and space as the people you loved died. she discovered that all along, as the world was changing, the immortals stood steadfast, unwavering in the changing winds and tides of the world. she discovered that no amount of time would allow her to forget her friends, the people she loved. she would never allow herself to forget. she wouldn't.
in a world where everything changed, she would remain unchanged. and so, she made a vow to herself. i won't forget you, she promised. i will remember all of you. i love you, forever and always, she whispered, as she repeated the names of the ones she had loved and lost, tracing her fingers over her ribcage where their names were. nesryn. chaol. yrene. dorian. elide. lysandra.
