Just thinking about how they placed Mike in the van where “telephone” was right below him.
(Also Will is above the “boy” here meaning the boy imagery for Mike is about Will)

something about how will assumes mike is gonna get mad at el for lying but in reality he just wants to understand why. mike isn’t gonna be mad at will he’s just gonna want to understand why and it’s gonna shock will that he seems so desperate for an answer rather than being mad

I need in season 5 a parallel of the weird hug of Mike to Will at the airport in season 4 but this time Mike is hugging Will so hard that Will says: “Mike I can’t breath”.

Where’s Will?
New favorite thing: Joyce miming the affectionate shoulder-grab she just did to Jonathan, but at Will-height, as she realizes he’s not in his usual place at the table and asks Jonathan where his brother is in 1x01.
“Pat son no. 1, pat son no. 2 – WAIT, ERROR, SON NOT FOUND.”
It’s just the cutest busy-mom thing. :’)

Yeah, I already knew that Byler have an ongoing theme of constantly losing and chasing after each other, but it just occurred to me that when Mike starts to lose Will, he chases after him until he gets him back; when Will starts to lose Mike, he chases after him only to search for confirmation that Mike’s better off without him and then tries to set him free. Meanwhile, Mike is screaming, crying, and sliding down a wall, trying to get his boyfriend back.

The Painting in the Hospital Room Analysis
So, after watching Vol 2. on the big screen, I realized there is a painting in the center of the hospital wall in the finale episode. I thought it was a minor coincidence. However, I think it’s some of the best use of props to tell subtext I’ve seen in awhile.
Let’s get started <3
Tumblr media
Shot 1:
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the opening shot. Whether you believe in blue meets yellow in the west— blue and yellow are used to contrast each other throughout S4. It’s interesting that they have chosen to frame two yellow backlights around a yellow-toned painting. It draws your eyes.
Shot 2:
Tumblr media
As they go to hug, the painting moves to go directly behind Will’s head. Even after Lucas moves to El, Will is still framed by the painting. Note, the yellow lights are not lighting ANY of the characters. They are simply used to draw are eyes to El when Lucas walks over to her. In addition, the yellow light separates the actors from the background.
Shot 3:
Tumblr media
As the group draws nearer to Max, Will walks perfectly to stand in front of the painting. Note how the curtain is drawn to create a visual aesthetic frame that includes the painting. Also, the yellow lighting is right over Will’s shoulder.
+ my heart hurts here because look how isolated/separated Lucas is. He is placed in a more shadowed area of the frame to harken to his darker sadder emotional state. I want to give him a hug.
Shot 4:
Tumblr media
Here— the painting sits behind the group. Bright yellow light highlights Lucas.
Shot 5:
Tumblr media
Yes, this is how the shot looks. The camera is pushing in— however, this screencap is from the starting frame. They included the tiniest bit of Will’s shoulder in the frame (which makes it kinda off-balanced) + framed the painting between Mike and Will. Wonder why…
And my personal favorite shot—
Tumblr media
Look how the painting is directly behind Mike as he looks at Will, but as Mike looks towards towards El, the painting follows. It lands right behind El’s head. It’s a visual metaphor for how Mike sees the painting as El’s, but it’s not the truth.
Note how much the yellow is contrasting with the blue in this shot too. You are supposed to notice. This is almost highlighted. You can visual see the light go from highlighting Mike/pulling your attention to Mike, and then to El. I cannot believe I missed this. It’s crazy. It’s a visual metaphor for how Mike thinks at the moment.
The way they could have easily replaced it with an X-ray that also can be used as a practical light to show Max’s conditions or medical charts. Yet, instead, they choose a yellow-toned painting and lit it with backlights + blocked the scene around it. It’s an interesting choice.
Also interesting that the shot below is the only one not in a bystanders POV or Lucas’s. It’s Mike’s POV which is funny because it’s the only shot that doesn’t frame the painting around Will and instead, it moves to go behind Eleven✌🏻
And one last thing:
The painting looks like a repaint of a Thomas Kinkade. Ya know, the Christian crazy painter that took advantage of other crazy Christians to gain money— it matches the tone of Hawkins and the religious fanatics that have emerged after they lost. Why wouldn’t Hawkins have Thomas Kinkade on their walls. It makes total sense.

I’ve changed my mind on account of the fact that Max Mayfield and Lucas Sinclair are both suns.
Every relationship is a sun and moon dynamic when you really think about it.

No, keep going.
Read multiple stories for my literature class this week about characters who mistook feelings of loss, desperation and lonliness for love.

Stranger Things keeps emphasizing that shared interests and the act of taking an interest are really important when making relationships (platonic, familial, and romantic) work, so can we spare a moment to appreciate this shit right here?
Mike walks into the room and immediately asks El about her arts-and-crafts project — something related to her hobby. (She didn’t show it to him. She just happened to be working on it when he entered, so he saw.) He’s trying to connect with her and support her, but she only gives him a nod in response. She doesn’t look at him, and she doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t meet him half way. So, his annoyed sigh is about the implied, standoffish rejection. Meanwhile, his line, “Are we just not gonna talk about it?” has two meanings.
Intentionally, he’s referring to her lying and everything that happened at Rink O Mania. Subtextually, he’s referring to her project. Mike and El have never bonded over their separate or shared interests, and this is no exception.
When comparing that to Will purposefully showing Mike his art project in episode eight, Mike asking about it, and Will then giving him a whole monologue connected to it, the two scenes seems to highlight a few stark contrasts between Mike’s relationship with Will and his relationship with El. Mike and Will bond over both their separate and shared interests, and they also meet each other half way in almost everything. Mike and El, on the other hand, don’t do any of that in regard to one another.

Mike thinks he has to be needed in order to be loved because he doesn’t think anyone could ever want him. He thinks he has to earn love via offering some form of protection. Meanwhile, Will wants Mike so much that he feels like he needs him. And it has nothing to do with Mike earning his affection — Will just loves him for who he is.

Can we all just agree that no matter how the first kiss occurs, Mike and Will both have to cry right afterward and hold each other tenderly because, hey, it turns out they’re not going to be romantically alone and shunned for the rest of their lives and can both be happy with the person they love?
