Not trying isn't cute.

Yesterday, I spent the entire day organizing thread. Since the beginning of my embroidery experience, I've just thrown all my thread into the same bag and allowed it to become a tangled mess. My partner and friends would laugh and lightheartedly tease me about being a "disorganized creative type," and they aren't wrong. I wear that badge with pride. But I think that pride has stopped me from growing. And in this case, I chose this as a part of my identity and refused to even consider organizing my supplies, leading to frequently replacing colours unnecessarily or running out of essential colours in the middle of the project.

This undertaking took me most of the day yesterday, and is still not done. Im still a creative, disorganized, quirky artist. I still scribble nonsense notes that make sense to only me, and surprise my loved ones with creative handmade gifts. I still have a creative brain, clearing external clutter doesn't change that.

Refusing to organize my thread was a way to avoid growth. It was a big project, so I chose to believe that I was doomed to destroy my thread forever, when in reality, a weekend's hard work solved the problem and now I can fully utilize the colour palette I've worked so hard to cultivate. It's an important reminder for me on the value of trying. Improving yourself or your artistic process or your home won't take away or disqualify your personality. No one will judge you for wanting to be neater, and chipping away at a big project is better than not trying at all. And if you are disabled like me, it's important to recognize the things that you *can* do yo make a difference. Maybe I can't clean my house today or paint my walls or build furniture or any other major change in my home to make it less chaotic, but thread? Yeah I can handle thread today.

Now I'm off to get my queer ass some more coffee.
